The Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers have started the 2011 N.S.W. R.L.State Cup in disappointing fashion , losing their first three matches.

The opening game against Canterbury Bankstown, the defending Premiers, at Leichhardt Oval was a hard fought match with the lead changing many times. However, the experience of the Canterbury team came to the fore in the final minutes and they ran out winners by 30 to 16. It was quite a valiant effort from the Tigers who matched their opponents for the better part of the game. Our team is in the rebuilding stage with the majority of the squad being youngsters, and coach Paul Fletcher will no doubt improve their skills as the season progresses.

The other two matches were played in similar fashion with our boys losing in the dying minutes of both games. Against Windsor (at Windsor) they were defeated by 8 to 6 on the bell in conditions that were more suited to water polo due to torrential rain, and they should have at least gained a draw in such a hard fought match.

The third game was against Wentworthville at Ringrose Park, and again they were beaten in the last ten minutes of a gruelling match, by 18 to 12.

Injuries to many key players from the Wests Tigers N.R.L. squad and our own squad have lessened our ability in these early games, but with the return of some of these players over the coming weeks we should see the team go into these matches with a stronger side and hopefully gain some competition points to move up the ladder.

STOP PRESS Round 4 - BYE Round 5 - vs Western Suburbs won by 36-22

Dear Member,At this time I would like to make you aware of some proposed Federal Government regulations, that if passed, will have a dramatic effect on the Club Industry and indeed our Club.As you know, the recent Federal Elections resulted in a “hung” Parliament and in order to govern, P.M. Gillard enlisted the aid of the minor parties and Independents to form Government. The P.M. promised one Independent from Tasmania her support in introducing legislation for a mandatory pre-commitment scheme for clubs and pubs to curb problem gambling. This scheme proposes to force all people who wish to gamble on poker

machines to obtain a card with details of what amount they wish to gamble on any one day or in any one period. Without this card no one will be able to access the machines to play.Clubs will have to regulate all their machines to accept this technology, which at the present time is untried. Industry sources are predicting that technology such as suggested would cost millions of dollars to implement, a cost that has to be borne by the various venues. On top of this, it is predicted that most recreational gamblers will not bother with this requirement and simply find other means to gamble. The proponents of this legislation are saying that Clubs such as ours would suffer a downturn in revenue of up to 40%. If this were the case most Clubs, including ours, would not be able to trade as we do now, and members would find that services and amenities would have to be curtailed, with possible job losses for staff, cutbacks in donations to the various charities, and ultimately the possible closure of the business.I know there are many members of our Club who do not play machines and they may think this outcome will not affect them, but sadly all members will be affected, and it would be a tragedy should this happen.Another issue is the proposal to limit the amount of cash taken from A.T.M.s in our venues to $250 a day, and again this will impact on those members who wish to withdraw larger amounts.A campaign has just been launched by our Industry body, Clubs NSW, to combat all of the above, and it is predicted that this will be a no-holds barred event (see details below). So as you can imagine, should all these things occur, it paints a pretty grim picture for the future, and may not have the desired effect in helping problem gamblers. On top of this is the proposed carbon tax, which on figures presented, could cost this Club upwards of $70,000 a year.Your Board and Management are ever hopeful that common sense will prevail in these matters and our Club can continue to offer all members the very best in all aspects of Club life.On a brighter note, the Club should receive some tax relief with the change of State Government and this no doubt will help in the future. In conclusion, may I, on behalf of the Board and Management, trust you had a safe and enjoyable Easter with your loved ones and friends, and thank you for your continued support.

KEITH AGGETT PRESIDENT

Club members are urged to logon to this website: www.itsunaustralian.com.au to sign the petition and register your concern about the possible impact on your club and the industry (in particular the potential impact on employment), or ask our staff how you can sign the petition when you are next in the club.

THE FITNESS EDGE AND HAWKS LOUNGE REFURBISHMENT PROJECT 2011

Just as we get over the last of the dust from our 2009 building project we start again.

The Development Application for the 2011 project was lodged with Ryde Council on 11th April and a copy of the plans for the proposed works is below.

THE FITNESS EDGE

The major issues for the operation of the Fitness Edge are the lack of space for key facilities such as cardio equipment and the need to upgrade our change rooms. The Fitness Edge is now in its 14th year of operation and the proposed changes will ensure we are able to take the centre through another decade.

The key changes will be:

1. The complete redesign of our change rooms

To provide for a third change room. This will give us the flexibility to maintain the change rooms to a high standard without the restriction of the inability to access female change rooms during the day for maintenance issues. The third change room will also be used as a family change facility for our learn to swim classes. These works will be staged so that we have one completely new female change room available prior to work in the existing change room areas

(Refer staging plans on display at the Club).

2. A New Group Fitness Room

This facility will be built in the existing Hawks Lounge and will be able to be completed with minimum disruption to Fitness Edge members. When finished it will allow us to:

A. Redesign the existing Group Fitness Room

To accommodate a new cycle room and also allow us to relocate weights equipment from the cardio room as well as provide additional weights equipment specifically targeted at entry level gym users.

B. Refurbish the existing cardio room

By removing the cycle room and relocating existing weights equipment which will allow more space for more cardio equipment (treadmills, cycles etc.) and an enlarged stretch area. (Refer to the proposed new equipment layout on display at the Club).

3. New Reception Area

A redesigned and improved reception area which will also improve traffic flow in this area. Included in this part of the redesign is a new access passage to the new Group Fitness room and new weights room.

4. New Massage Facility

A new massage room with better facilities in a quieter environment to enable our massage providers, Michael and Sarah from Magic Hands Massage, to provide an even better service to members.

HAWKS LOUNGE

A refurbished and modified Hawks Lounge will be constructed to ensure we have a suitable venue for those special sports events and an alternative lounge facility as required.

The works are not expected to commence until later this year (August/September approximately) and will take up to 6 months to complete with stages being opened progressively during this time.

A more comprehensive draft staging plan is on display at the Club Reception which will give members a better idea on how we hope to manage this project.

We will of course be working with the appointed builder to ensure there is minimum disruption to Fitness Edge members, but the complexity of the task within the existing building indicates we will have some difficult aspects to overcome.

The end result will be worth the wait.

SEMINAR PRESENTER MICHAEL WILKINSON

Retired chartered accountant, Michael Wilkinson, 70, and his wife, Noelene, are foundation members of the Fitness Edge, and have used the facilities on a weekly basis since its inception. As a retiree Michael spent so much time on personal exercise it seemed a good idea to promote the benefits of exercise to older people.

In 2010 Michael gained a TAFE Certificate III qualification as a group fitness instructor. He approached Fitness Edge manager, Chris Kalligas, who gave him the industry start he needed. During the Fitness Edge’s birthday week celebrations Michael will present two seminars to senior members on the benefits of physical exercise for all seniors.

THE FITNESS EDGE SWIM SCHOOLOur Swim School is family-friendly and offers a broad range of lessons from six months old through to adults and seniors, and we also cater for special needs swimmers.

Our terms are the same as public school terms, making it easier for families, giving everyone the chance to have a break and refresh for the following term.

Our success is demonstrated through the high calibre of our coaches and instructors, who not only strive to get the best out of each swimmer but also to have fun in the teaching process.

All our instructors are AustSwim qualified, and we pride ourselves on our teamwork, excellent teaching methods, our outstanding reputation within the community, and the high level of success we have experienced within the swimming industry.

The continual support and guidance we offer our families and staff helps us to remain a Swim School with a personal and caring approach without losing our key focus on water education and safety for all.

CELEBRATING OUR SWIMMERS’ SUCCESS It’s that time of year when our swimmers have the chance to showcase their swimming skills in their school carnivals. We love to hear of their achievements, both individual and in relays, and share their success with the Swim School team.

Most schools have already run their swimming carnivals this year and we have a number of junior girl and boy champions, including a couple of record breakers. Many of our swimmers have represented their Zone, then onto Regional and even some making State representation. For those swimmers with carnivals coming up - we wish you the best of luck! Well done to all and please keep sharing your success with us. We love to see everyone doing so well.

START YOUR LITTLE ONES ON THE ROAD TO BEING WATER SAFE. Come and see the Swim School and help us to help your little ones learn the life skill of swimming and water safety, and perhaps get them on the road to making area carnivals when they get to school!

We have a number of Preschooler and Baby positions available in our Swim School. Classes run Monday to Friday 11am-12.30pm.

Come down and see us or give us a call on 9808 7617 or go to www.releagues.com.au for more information.

CAMERA CLUB Our photographic year has begun with very pleasing attendance. At the first competition evening, on February 28th, many images taken by new members were recognised for their photographic qualities. This is a very pleasing way to experience your first competition night. On competition nights, every fourth Monday of the month, we present our images for all to view. A judge from another photographic organisation, will address/comment on all images presented, selecting images they see as having worthwhile or arresting qualities. The judge offers comments, which assists members with their photographic skills. I would like to share a couple of comments made by our judge of the evening. He spoke of “helping the eye to move into the image”. And again, “the essence of a small print is simplicity.” “The ‘simpler’ the image, the more time we spend with it”. At our general meeting we were asked to share our needs in the field of photography. What did we want to see happen in the club that would help us explore and develop our photographic skills? Many excellent suggestions were made, eg. “The running of photographic workshops which looked specifically at ‘How do I use and get the best from my camera?’ ‘How do I take this subject?’ And importantly, ‘How do I work out what to take?’ Shooting such topics as sporting events, landscapes, seascapes. ‘How do I get creative with my camera?’Our first digital evening is off to a flying start. The opportunity to be given the help that you require in digital enhancement and manipulation from experts within the club is priceless. Our website: www.pbase.com/relccc. Looking forward to seeing you at our next camera club meeting, John Maynard.

CHESS CLUB Our club is now in its fortieth year, and we would like to give special thanks to the Leagues Club and its directors and staff - especially our patron Harry Bell - for providing us with a home for all those years and for much assistance and courtesy otherwise. 2011 got under way with our fortieth AGM on 26 January. Our office-bearers for 2011 are: Les Mikolajczyk, President; Greig Edwards, Treasurer; Bill Gletsos, Vice President, also Director of Play; NSWCA Delegate, Rob Watson; and Dennis Hale, Secretary, also Publicity Officer. Our congratulations and thanks to Greig Edwards and Rob Watson who are first-time office-bearers. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed for Tom Powers, our retiring treasurer, for his exceptional efforts on behalf of our club over many years. Our Club’s Rapid Play Championship (each player having 20 minutes plus 10 seconds per move from the beginning of the game) ended in a clear win for Steven Liu on 7.5/9. Second was Rob Watson on 6.5/9 with four players equal third on 6/9 – newcomer Reynante Calixto, Joshua Christensen, Mark Aspin and Chee Tan. The under 1600 rating prize was won by Egon Cardenas on 5/9. Congratulations to all. Currently the preliminary rounds of our club championship are being played. We have a number of new strong players so some interesting chess is expected. As always, new players of whatever standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Prospective members are invited to visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com For more information, please contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970059), Greig Edwards (0416 248223) or myself - Dennis Hale (9484 1435).

THE FISHING CLUBWe are well into the year and have just had our Annual Dinner in the Hawk’s Nest Restaurant, with 28 members and partners. A good night was had by all. Our patron and Club President, Mr. Keith Aggett, presented our trophy with Michael Cheng receiving the L.J. Hayes trophy for the heaviest weight of fish, and Reg Howarth receiving the Keith Aggett trophy for the largest fish. A special trophy was awarded to Nic Ceh for best organiser and wine buyer. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of the month. All Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club members are welcome to join the outing as guest members. The departure time is 5.30am and the return time is 2pm. The boat is a 53-footer with toilet facility and offers plenty of space on deck. The cost is $50 which is much cheaper than the current commercial rate of $70-$100. Fishing gear is available for hire for $5, but baits are not included. Any interested club member should contact Mr. Nic Ceh at 9858 2412 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm for details. The fishing spots are generally about 5km east of North Head at about 25-40 fathoms deep. Types of fish caught generally include morwongs, flathead, snapper, sweeps and pigfish. Upcoming outings: June 5th, July 3rd, August 7th, September 4th and October 2nd.Trevor Fahey

GOLF CLUB Well, everyone must have been missing their golf as our first game for the year at North Turramurra had nearly everyone present. The winner in A Grade was Rick Beves with 41 points and Alan Russell runner-up with 38 points. B grade was a family affair with Natalie P on 42 points, defeating her husband Valery on 41 points. Golf must have been easy on the day as Alan Russell had an eagle on the 12th hole and Janice Quintas went home with 52 golf balls after winning the eagles nest on the 4th hole, only 18cm from a hole in one. Penrith was a hot day and maybe that’s why every group seemed to spend a lot of time looking for golf balls in the trees to get some shade! A grade was a family affair with the Woodies – Robert defeating Ulla on a count back with 38 points. Brian Ewin took out B grade with 40 points from Juan Quintas on 39 points. The first round of the stableford trophy was a small field at Dunheved with honours going to Steve Ferns with 41 points in A grade and Yuri Popov 41 points in B grade. Runners-up on the day was a family affair again with Tony Tedesco with 38 points in A grade and Dom Tedesco with 40 points in B grade, the Eagles Nest going off again with 2 balls going to Steve Mac. North Turramurra hosted a 2BBB and there were points a plenty on offer. Congratulations to Kaye Henderson and Tony Tedesco winning with 53 points on count back from Valery P and Slava Sokolov. Congratulations Kaye who had 49 points on her own. Ashlar was the venue for our first Medal of the year, and the top 16 to qualify for our matchplay championships. There were plenty of nervous people in the club house waiting for the results. The medals were won by Ulla Wood 36 points – A grade and Valery P 34 points on count back – B Grade. Runners-up on the day were Tony Tedesco 32 points – A grade and Greg Walsh 34 points – B grade. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.comGood golfing til next time! Annika & Tiger!

SENIORS CLUB In February our Annual General Meeting was held with all Committee Members standing for re-election. They were voted in unanimously and our thanks go to Mr Dennis Petkovich who acted as Returning Officer in the absence of our Patron, Mr. John Bogie. Mr Bogie has not been well and our thoughts and best wishes are sent to him for a speedy recovery. Our Twilight Cruise around the Harbour in February proved very popular and we were blessed with a wonderful warm evening. We are looking forward to our annual Doyles outing for their “Winter Special” together with other lunches being planned. Our bus trips take us around Sydney, the Southern Highlands, the Central Coast and sometimes further afield. These are held every month. Everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful Wivenhoe House at Camden, and all enjoyed the lovely lunch served by Sister Mary and her staff of volunteers. We are looking forward to our “Christmas in July” festivities being held this year in the Blue Mountains. We may even see snow!! For those interested in cards, a game of Solo is played every Thursday at 1.30pm. Our meetings are held in the Function Rooms on the first and third Thursday of each month at 11am and our Annual joining fee is $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston on 96387419.

SQUASH CLUBWe have just begun the Autumn Competition for 2011. We have the following teams entered - Div 5 (currently running 1st) and Div 8 (currently running 5th). I am sure there will be some interesting contests, as usual, throughout this competition. Good luck to all players. Let’s see if one team can ‘bring home the bacon’!!!The Squash Club recently held its AGM at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and elected the committee for the upcoming year. Congratulations go to Ernie Speed who was again re-elected President, Bev Speed, Secretary and John Stapley as Treasurer. These guys are the true ‘backbone’ of the Squash Club. I am sure all players join me in congratulating them on a job well done over the past year, and wish them all the best for the coming year. Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBWell, 2011 has started in a positive position with a good attendance for our trip. Although it started raining on leaving the club, the nearer we came to Corrimal, patches of blue sky appeared. After a good lunch, an enjoyable game of bowls, all were relaxed and happy on the journey home. Just a reminder about the next two coming trips – 12th June to be played at Umina. This is a bowls uniform dress game. Members wishing to attend can contact Marie Crawley 9684 1023 or Bob Freeland 9644 4792 or 0427 003 038, five to seven days before the trip to book a seat on coach. The coach leaves Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club at 9.30am. Just to advise all members on an item discussed at the AGM meeting re: Arthur Watkinson. As a result of Arthur’s illness he has moved into Courtlands Village, Nth. Parramatta. The Committee tabled a motion to award the Arthur Watkinson Life Membership to the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, Travelling Bowls Club, in recognition for his longstanding service and continued support over many years. The motion was accepted unanimously. Arthur has been presented with a badge and all good wishes.

TRAVEL CLUBOver the past 3 months our AGM has taken place and all previous office bearers were returned unopposed. At the time of writing, our members have not returned from their Great Ocean Road trip but I am sure they had an enjoyable time. Our Mother’s Day lunch on 5th May will be held this year in the Dining Room at the Club. A “Winter’s Day Out” complete with lunch and entertainment is taking place in June at the Dural Country Club, and our Christmas in July, complete with log fire, will be held this year at a new venue at Mt. Victoria. Should you be interested in joining our Club, we meet at 2pm on the first Tuesday of the month at the Club. For further details please contact our Secretary – Margaret Dollar on 9898 3332.

QUEENSLAND FLOODSEarlier this year following the devastating and tragic flooding throughout Queensland, the Club’s Board of Directors approved a donation of $100,000 on behalf of Club members to the Qld. Premier’s Relief Appeal.

In addition, Club members and visitors generously donated $1,400 and this was topped up to $2,000 by the Board for donation.

The Club also donated $2,000 to Goodna and Districts RLFC in South West Brisbane to assist in replacing items damaged by the floods.

Recently the Club donated a further $2,000 to a group of students and teachers from Marsden High School, who unselfishly gave up their time to travel to an area near Goondiwindi in Southern Queensland to assist farmers build fences and repair property. (see pic below).

Shamrocks Junior Rugby League Football Club New Training Lights

In late 2010 Shamrocks JRLFC needed to remove and replace two large and badly decayed light poles. But with no funds to undertake the task, Shamrocks president Bob Siemsen approached Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for assistance. The Board approved funding for the project ($26,000) over the summer break to ensure the lights would be available for the 2011 season. Shamrocks are fielding 20 teams in 2011, and training on their grounds at St Pats Dundas would have been severely restricted without the new lights.

Pictured right, at the handover of the lights is, L to R: Shamrocks coach Steve Doherty, Bradley Doherty, RELC President Keith Aggett , Greg Doherty, Chris McCarthy and Shamrocks President Bob Siemsen

New lights for Eastwood-Ryde Netball Association (ERNA)In 2010/11 ERNA, with the assistance of Ryde Council installed some new all-weather netball courts. Lights were required to gain full advantage of the courts, but no additional council funding was available. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club provided an additional $10,000 grant whilst also increasing its existing annual grant to $6,000 to assist with the cost and reduce the burden on both the association and netball players’ parents.
