THE PRESIDENT

Dear Distinguished Guests and Conference

Participants, Marhaban bi-kum and my warmest wel-come to Jeddah and the Eleventh Annual Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Associa-tion of Language Teachers (KSAALT) TESOL Confer-ence. Our theme, ELT Re-

defined for Saudi Vision 2030: Technology, Compe-tence & Performance, promises to engross us in the familiar world of academia through the perspectives of more than a half a dozen outstanding internation-al presenters as well as a multitude of distinguished speakers from educational institutions throughout the Kingdom. The 11th KSAALT TESOL Annual Confer-ence opens a new chapter for KSAALT and provides many firsts for the participants. This is our first year to offer pre-conference courses and two panel discus-sions hosted by a renowned panel of educators in a 5 star venue. We welcome our plenary speakers, Dr. Osman Barnawi from the Royal Commission College & Institutes, in Yanbu, Dr. Christine Coombs from Dubai Men’s College, Ms. Elena Vestri from National Geographic, Ms. Nadine El Agha from Alpha, and Mr. Christopher Graham from Garnet Education.

KSAALT TESOL is an organization that began with a handful of teachers in 2006 and has grown to over 400 members with 6 chapters, AL Khobar. Riyadh, Jeddah, Yanbu, Abha and Jizan. KSAALT TESOL is a steadfast affiliate of both TESOL and IATEFL.

The KSAALT TESOL Executive Council and Confer-ence Committee thank our major sponsors this year— Garnet Education, Alpha, LRN, National Geographic and UBT. Garnet Education, Alpha, Master English Education & Training, GCC and National Geograph-ic have sponsored the keynote speakers for this year’s

annual conference. KSAALT TESOL sincerely appre-ciates National Geographic and Garnet Education for their continued support and welcomes Alpha and LRN as their newest partners this year. We would also like to thank the following organizations who have pro-vided conference sponsorship this year. They include AMIDEAST, British Council, IDP, MacMillan, Mas-ter English Education & Training, Oxford University Press, and Pearson. Without their continuous support and confidence in KSAALT TESOL, it would not have become the thriving organization that it is today. We value and anticipate an enduring and productive alli-ance with each of you.

On behalf of the KSAALT TESOL Executive Coun-cil, I especially wish to thank the Conference Co-

Chairs, Fatmah Ali and Amreen Najmi, abstract chair, Dr. Suhail Sarhandi, Conference Consultant, Mrs. Ma-likah Sisay, and everyone else who has served on this year’s conference committee for their dedication and timeless devotion to bring this notable event to frui-tion.We hope that you enjoy the 11th Annual KSAALT TESOL Conference in this beautiful city of Jeddah and wish you professional growth and the cultivation of networking opportunities. Looking forward in seeing you at next year’s conference.

With sincere appreciation, Dr. Jad Michaelson KSAALT President 2017-2018

Ahlan Wa Sahlan!

A home away from home, is what Saudi

Arabia is to many. Most have spent a lifetime in this country, dedicating the best to the field of ed-ucation. ELT has come a long way in Saudi Arabia and with each passing year, we only see how our ELT educators have

made a tremendous difference- not just in producing quality local and international students but by revisit-ing their teaching practices as well. KSAALT TESOL provided educators with a universal platform from all over Saudi Arabia to share their concerns, meet like-minded professionals and learn from each other. Today, we witness the 11th annual conference event in Jeddah at a prestigious venue, Jeddah Hilton. On the bride of Red Sea, hundreds of educators gather all over from Saudi Arabia for a common goal- to learn and share…

This years’ conference brings in added elements: pre-conference courses, panel discussions, poster pre-sentations and featured speakers. Further, to our team committee, we added the “conference ambas-sador” initiative who aspire and inspire educators from different sectors to attend this conference. Our pre-conference courses are led by experts from lead-ing publishers and training centers such as the Oxford Publishing, British Council, Master English Educa-tion & Training, GCC and the IDP. Our panel discus-sions are led by experts with both, local and interna-tional speakers on board. Poster presentations add a unique touch to showcase the presenters’ research and ideas in an innovative way. Our featured speakers offer workshops and presentations- sponsored by our sponsors extending their expert knowledge from the plenary to add more to your learning experience!

Conferences are such a good time to net-work- make sure you use this opportunity to meet leaders, international speakers and fellow colleagues to expand your profession-al development circle. Our sponsors bring in so much more- Garnet Education & Alpha Publishing, being our Gold and Silver spon-sors present the best resources for student and teacher learning. Our deepest gratitude to all our sponsors- UBT, Pearsons, National Geographic, Master English (ATIS Center), LRN, British Council, Oxford Publishing, IDP, MacMillan and AMIDEAST for spon-soring the conference in the most exclusive way. Your generous contribution is highly ap-preciated!

Enjoy the conference and if you have any que-ries, our conference ambassadors and volun-teers are available throughout to assist you. Don’t forget to pass by our membership desk to apply or renew for your KSAALT TESOL annual membership. KSAALT TESOL Jed-dah Chapter has continuous professional de-velopment events and workshops throughout the year. And a big “Thank You” to our con-ference team for their dedicated efforts over the seven-month period to bring success! Ex-clusive thanks to Malikah Sisay- for being our conference guide!

plore some creative ways of using puppets and masks to promote genuine communication.

This session will focus on showcasing some easy to use ICT tools which take the teacher minimum time to prepare and which are guaranteed to have a positive impact on their learners

In this hands-on session we will firstly be looking at how storybooks are a perfect tool for teaching English to children. Teachers will have the opportunity to practise storytelling techniques, as well as discovering creative ideas for using storybooks with their learners. TEACHING FOR EXAMS & STANDARDIZED TESTING: MASTER ENGLISH EDUCATION & TRAINING, GCC & IDP

COURSE 3

Session 1: Planning, Designing and Teaching Exam Courses: Bushra Latif

There is a huge chasm between students who have to sit exams (and aspire to achieve high scores) and teachers who are qualified to analyze needs, plan and lead lessons to make a difference to students’ exam scores. The session will also provide a step by step guide to material and planning approaches with the aim of develop-ment of examination goals. Participants will also be aware of how to design exam questions to assess students’

knowledge or ability to apply material taught in class.

Session 2: Teaching To The Test: Hind Elyas

This presentation will focus on the advantages of standardized testing which is also known as teaching to the test. It will also shed light on the two main types of standardized tests and the different forms. Teaching to the test is a good thing if it is rigorous and focuses on what needs to be learned (Ben Johnson, 2011) and with that

it will help students achieve their learning goals effectively.

Session 3 & 4: Enhancing Effective Teaching of IELTS Reading & Writing: Anna Hasper

NATIONAL PLENARY SPEAKER: Dr. OTHMAN BARNAWI

“Wrong-Doing, Truth Telling: The Cultural Politics of CEFR in Saudi Arabia Today”[28th of April, 2018: 9:15 AM-10:00 AM]

Using the notion of ‘avowal’ and its place

within ‘the use of the CEFR in SA today’ as an analyt-ical lens, this presentation shows how and in what ways this very framework has penetrated the intellec-tual and policy infrastruc-

tures of Saudi higher education landscape. Through vivid examples, the presenter shares series of disrup-tive scholarly misconceptions that have led to the ev-eryday embodiment of the CEFR and its associated products, goods and services in the Saudi context. The presenter strongly argues that it is time to explore healing policy, curricula, and pedagogical practic-es relevant to the socio-cultural environment of the country.

Dr. Othman Z. Barnawi is an Associate Professor of TESOL/Applied Linguistics and critical education. He is the former Managing Director of Yanbu English Language Institute at the Royal Commission Colleges and Institutes, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. INTERNATIONAL PLENARY SPEAKER: CHRISTOPHER GRAHAM

“Saudi Vision 2030 and Reflective Practice: Connected Ideas”SPONSORED SPEAKER: GARNET EDUCATION

[28th of April, 2018: 2 PM-2:45 PM]

Saudi Vision 2030 pro-vides educators with

many exciting opportu-nities and challenges. The 2030 blueprint mentions the need for students to develop “resilient and independent characters” and ‘…the fundamental values of initiative, per-

sistence and leadership……”. In short, the 21 Centu-ry skills. To meet these challenges, teachers will need to ensure their skills are at the cutting edge of meth-odological approaches. Continuous professional de-

velopment is clearly one of the keys to ensuring that teachers are equipped with the best classroom ‘tool-kits’. The question that remains, however, is how we create professional development programmes that meet the ongoing needs of teachers and support them in the development of these 21 Century skills.

BIO: Christopher Graham is an educational consultant. Re-cent projects have been with the Arab Open Universi-ty in Sudan and KSA and with the British Council in Algeria, Iraq and Sierra Leone.

23

LOCAL PLENARY SPEAKER: ELENA VESTRI

“TOPIC: VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: SOME CONSIDERATIONS”SPONSORED SPEAKER: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LEARNING

[28th of April, 2018: 2:45 PM-3:30 PM]

With so many re-sources available

for vocabulary develop-ment, how is it that our students still struggle with learning it? Is it the meth-ods we as teachers use to present it? Could it be the activities that we choose to focus on? Maybe it’s lack of motivation on the students’ part. What if,

however, it’s the vocabulary words themselves that are the problem? In this discussion, the presenter will give a brief background/history on vocabulary acquisition techniques. She will also show some resources that are available to instructors to help them choose the ap-propriate vocabulary for the students’ levels. The pre-

sentation will wrap up with the sharing of successful vocabulary activities by the attendees.

BIO:Elena Vestri is an author with National Geographic Publishers (Great Writing Series; Top 10 and Top 20, Key Concepts). Title: Reflections on the 6 principles for teaching, PD and vision 2030.

Sub Themes:1. 6 Principles for exemplary teaching of English learners 2. How the 6 principles affect professional development and connect to vision 2030

Abstract:

TESOL International Association, the leading teachers’ association around the world, with more

than 120 affiliates, has recently published the 6 princi-ples for exemplary teaching of English learners. Deb-orah Short and her colleagues, with extensive research mainly in the K-12 sector in the USA, have managed to get a good grasp of the most effective principles needed for exemplary teaching of English learners. Although the research and the accompanying volume stress on the education sector of K-12, this panel will address the 6 principles that are being widely promot-ed; however, with a focus on tertiary education. Mr. Georgios Kormpas, an ANPC (Affiliate Network Pro-fessional Council) member of TESOL International, will present the 6 principles and moderate the session. Ms. Fatmah Ali, a KSAALT TESOL Jeddah Represen-tative, will reflect on the 6 principles and how these

affect PD and certifications. Dr. Connie Mitchell, a TESOL CAEP reviewer, will reflect on the relevance of these principles for the Saudi context and their connection to the Vision 2030. Ms. Hind Elyas, an acting Vice President of TESOL Sudan, will reflect on the sessions from a tertiary perspective and prac-tical applications of the principles. Dr. Christine Coombe, a past TESOL International President, will reflect on the principles through global PD online and through conferences. The panel will conclude with a Q & A session to answer any questions that attendees may have.

KSAALT TESOL CONFERENCE, 2018

Title: Raising Awareness of Current SLA Research in KSA

Sub Themes:1. ELT Theory into Practice and Performance 2. Other: SLA Research and its applications in the classroom

Abstract:

The Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research panel addresses what the current trends in SLA

research in KSA are and how this impacts what hap-pens inside the classroom. It will be to share research projects and promote more ideas for research that are relevant for teachers of English as a Foreign Language across KSA. Teachers need to know about current re-search results and how they can apply the findings for their future instruction, assessment, and communi-cation inside the classroom in order to help improve their language development (Al-Nasser, 2015). Con-sidering the Vision 2030, research needs to be trans-ferred to the current practices to advance the curricu-la and innovative teaching practices that will support student learning. The panelists will discuss and show-case research projects that will assist teachers in their daily English Language lesson planning and activi-

ties, instruction possibilities, assessment options, and communication opportunities with the co-teachers and supervisors, the students and their families, and the leadership. The intended purpose of the panel dis-cussion is to enrich the field of SLA research in KSA and establish education prospects for the future of language educators. Implications and recommenda-tions are made, and audience discussion is welcomed.

SPONSOR: UBT Academy

[28th of April, 2018: 11:15 AM- 12:00 PM]

Are you looking for a different concept to

improve how you advise and support teachers? Do you lack techniques to make your advisory feedback effective? Let’s change that!Advising and support-

ing teachers is a highly stressful and often misunder-stood role. Helping prepare teachers to learn and de-velop rather than be ‘directed’ of what to do is really a discussion about the role of the ‘advisor’ and ‘teacher’. From the moment a formal or informal assessment takes place – there are preconceived notions of how an advisor or teacher’s teaching performance may be

viewed. This may result in teachers who need guided support, to misinterpret how effective feedback can actually improve their knowledge and teaching. As a result, assessor and teacher are under pressure. A key element that blocks this relationship is a lack of un-derstanding of the advisory role. With a majority of assessments based around formal situations this can lead to a lack of acceptance and benefit in such an ad-visory context.

Digitalizing Classrooms to Cultivate Autonomous Learning with Blended Learning

10:00 AM-10:45 AM

One of the most perplexing issues that EFL teachers face is making students self-ad-equate and independent learners who can develop as learners outside the safe realm of the classroom. To be an autonomous learner, a student needs to understand his needs as a learner, his learning styles, ability to set goals and cognitive intelligence to carry out self-assessment. Technology can provide the pedagogical support stu-

dents need to become self-sufficient through blended learning.

Ms. Samiha Siddiqui is a veteran EFL instructor with over 17 years of experience. She has a degree in English Lang. & Lit. and a TEFL, a TESOL and a CELTA. She is also a certified Cambridge trainer. Raising awareness of coaching in Teaching

The presentation will commence with a matching activity (terms with their defini-tion) in order to introduce the concept of coaching and to differentiate between it and mentoring. Then, that will be followed by a brief feedback session. trainees are asked about the types of coaching they know or heard of and which kind is related to teaching. Few minutes to receive feedback from the teachers. After that, trainers are to watch a video on a coaching session between a coach and a coachee, and then the trainees will reflect on the video and relate it to their own experiences. Finally, the session will be concluded with a role-play activity. In other words, in pairs, teachers will be given a sample of coaching questions and one of them will play the role of the

coach and the other will play the role of the coachee.
