Kalbim çok hızlı atıyor. Hareketsiz kalmaya çalışırken nefesimi duyabiliyorum. Saat akşam yediyi geçti ve son iki saati Gästrikland ormanlarındaki küçük bir kulübede geçirdim. Gästrikland İsveç’in doğu kıyısında bulunuyor ve bu dar ülkenin neredeyse ortalarına kadar uzanıyor. Fotoğrafçı Roger Borgelid ile Alman ziyaretçi Vanessa Vogel da küçük bir tepenin üzerindeki kulübede bana katıldı.

İsveç’te yaklaşık 3 bin bozayı var ve ormanlarında yaşayıp et, ot ayırmadan yiyen yüzlerce hepçil canlı türüyle Gästrikland hayvan popülasyonunun en yoğun olduğu bölgelerden biri. Saklandığımız kulübedeki sivrisinekler hemen yanı başımızda vızıldayarak dolaşıyor. Sessiz olmamız söylendiği için yalnızca fısıldaşıyoruz. Çünkü sesimiz ayıları korkutup kaçırabilir.

İğne yapraklı ağaçlardan oluşan orman çok sessiz. Bu sessizlik az sonra bir şeyler olacakmış hissi uyandırıyor. Yakındaki ağaç kütüğüne konan ağaçkakan, gagasıyla kütükteki böcekleri yakalamaya çalışınca sessizlik bozuluyor. Çok geçmeden, bu siyah beyaz renkli kuşa, onları çekmek için koyduğumuz yemleri yemek üzere

My pulse is beating rapidly. I try not to move, as I’m aware of my own breathing. The clock has passed seven in the evening and I have spent the last two hours in a small wooden cottage in the forests of Gästrikland –a landscape situated on the eastern coast– almost half way up the narrow country. In the cottage, which is placed on top of a small hill, I am joined by photographer Roger Borgelid, and German visitor Vanessa Vogel.

Sweden has about 3,000 brown bears in the wild, and Gästrikland has among the country’s highest density with hundreds of the omnivores living in the nearby forests. Inside the hide, mosquitoes have started to buzz annoyingly close. We have been told to keep quiet, so the talk must be kept to a whisper, where any sudden move would scare off a potential bear.

The coniferous forest is still, as if waiting for something to occur. A woodpecker lands on a pine trunk next to the hide, and starts to peck for insects, thus breaking the silence. Soon the black-and-white bird is joined by a jay which swoops in to feed off the seeds that have been placed there to attract birds. An inquisitive squirrel joins in on the


open smorgasbord among the mossy rocks. Underneath the rocks awaits another feast meant for the more elusive inhabitants of the woodland.

“The bears are the ghosts of the forests. They will show up when you least except it,” Vanessa Vogel whispers.

Suddenly a young buzzard appears and pulls out a piece of meat under the rubble and takes off, all within a blink of an eye. The hide has views in three directions, so we take turns in covering all angles. As the blue hour sets in, the clock has passed ten at night and my eyes sweep across a path leading up to the cabin. There they are! Out of nowhere, without making the tiniest sound, a full-grown female bear with two cubs emerge. Surrounded by a bluish shimmer, they carefully anticipate every step, every movement. As the bears slowly close in on us, I am awestruck. Whereas wolves seldom are glimpsed passing by the cabin or heard howling, the likelihood of spotting wild bears from the cabin is close to a hundred percent. Watching mama bear searching for pieces of meat under the rocks just twenty meters away from us whilst keeping an eye for her cubs that are joyfully tumbling around the undergrowth, shows just how caring

Ansızın beliren bir şahin, kayaların altından bir parça et alıp göz açıp kapayıncaya kadar ortadan kayboluyor. Bulunduğumuz yerden üç taraf görülüyor ve manzarayı her açıdan izleyebilmek için sırayla yer değiştiriyoruz. Saat onu geçti; alacakaranlık çöküyor. Kulübeye giden yolu tarıyorum. İşte, oradalar! Yetişkin bir dişi ayıyla iki yavrusu hiç ses çıkarmadan karşımızda beliriveriyor. Mavi bir ışıltının önünde dikkatle ilerliyorlar. Ayılar bize yaklaştıkça içimi büyük bir hayranlık ve dehşet hissi kaplıyor. Arada bir kurtları görsek veya ulumalarını duysak da vahşi ayıları kulübeden görme ihtimalimiz çok yüksek. Anne ayının yalnızca 20 metre ötemizdeki kayaların altında et aramasını izlerken yavrularının neşeyle çalıların etrafında yuvarlanmasını seyretmek, insanlara saldıran yırtıcılar olarak görülseler de bu


hayvanların şefkatli ve sempatik olduklarının kanıtı. İşin aslı bozayılar oldukça ürkek; insanları fark ettikleri anda kaçıyorlar bulundukları yerden çoğu zaman. Anne ayı ve iki yavrusu uzaklaştıktan sonra iki ayı daha beliriyor. Erkek ayılardan daha genç olanı ayağa kalkıp bir ağaç kütüğüne sürtünerek sırtını kaşıyor. Vanessa, “Tıpkı Baloo gibi.” diyor kıkırdayarak.

Gün yeniden ağarmadan bir iki saat önce, yarı karanlıkta ranzaya uzanıp gözlerimi kapıyorum. Uykuya dalmadan önce gördüğümüz üç ayı tekrar gözlerimin önünden geçiyor.

Doğanın Peyzaj Mimarları Iş BaşındaStockholm’e birkaç saatlik mesafede bir göl ve nehir sistemi olan Bergslagen’deki Norrsjön’a gidiyoruz ertesi gün. Elektrikli motorla çalışan botumuzla çok gürültü çıkarmadan gölün ortasındaki “Kunduz Adası”na yaklaşıyoruz. Doğanın peyzaj mimarlarını doğal ortamlarında görmek, uzun zamandır Bergslagen’in sulak arazilerini şekillendiren hayvanları izlemek için buradayız.

The truth of the matter is that brown bears are extremely wary, and will in most cases run off at the slightest sign of human presence. After the family of three have vanished two other bears emerge. One of them, a young male stands up and scratches his back on a pine trunk. “Just like Baloo,” Vanessa giggles.

As the semi-darkness sets in around midnight, for a mere few hours before sunrise, I lay down on the cabin’s bunk bed and close my eyes. As I drift away, the scene of the bear trio floating out of the mist replays on my retina.

Landscape Architects in ActionThe next day we visit Norrsjön, a lake and river system in Bergslagen, an area located a couple of hours outside Stockholm. The electric engine steers the dinghy without much sound as the boat approaches Beaver Island, located in the middle of the lake. We are here to view the area’s landscape architects in their natural habitat, the animals that have long shaped the wetlands of Bergslagen.


WildSweden’da safari organizatörlüğü yapan Simon Green, “Çok önemli bir tür,” diyor. “Kunduzlar bir bölgeye geldiklerinde biyolojik çeşitlilik yüzde 30 artıyor ve ölü ağaçlar böceklerle kuşları çekiyor.” Alacakaranlık bastırdı, yırtıcı hayvanların ve insanların ortalıkta olmayacağını düşündüklerinden kunduzlar bu saatlerde daha etkin oluyor.

Simon Green, kunduzları görmek için elindeki feneri nehrin kıvrımlarına doğru tutuyor. Yakalanması zor hayvanların izlerini görebiliyoruz. Hayvanların beslenmek için tercihi devrik titrek kavaklar ve üzerinde diş izleri bulunan huş kütükleri. Biz beyaz, mor ve sarı renkli nilüferlerle kaplı nehir boyunca ilerlerken çiselemeye başlayan yağmur, coğrafyanın gizemli havasını bir kat daha gizemli kılıyor. Simon Green aniden “Kunduz!” diye nispeten yüksek perdeden fısıldıyor.

“They are an important species; biodiversity actually increases by thirty percent when beavers flood an area and the dead wood attracts insects and birds,” says Simon Green, who works for the safari tour operator WildSweden. It’s dusk, the best time to view beavers since they feel safer from predators and humans and become more active.

Simon Green holds a spotlight and shines it along the river bends in order to spot beavers. We pass traces of the elusive animals: Felled aspen trees, the animal’s preferred choice of food, and birch trunks that show apparent gnaw marks along the way. As we make our way further into the riverways, covered by white, purple, and yellow water lilies, it starts to rain lightly which only adds to the mystique of this vast water world. Suddenly Simon Green utters a loud whisper: “Beaver!”


Taş atımı mesafede bir kunduz yüzerek hemen yanımızdan geçiveriyor. Hayvan bizi fark edip kuyruğunu suya vurarak dalmadan önce büyük bir zarafetle suyun üstünde yüzüyor kısa bir süre. Manzaranın verdiği mutlulukla Färna Manor’a dönüş yolculuğumuz başlıyor. Kaskatı kesilmiş uzuvlarımızı rahatlatacak aroma terapi spa’sı bizi bekliyor burada. Yarın ya geyik görmek için yeniden safariye çıkacağız ya da Stockholm’e iki saatlik mesafede bulunan Bergslagen ormanlarındaki Kolarbyn ekolojik köyünü ziyaret edeceğiz. Yerel mandıralardan alınan peynirler, otelin bostanlarından toplanan meyve sebzeler ve yakınlardaki ormanlardan avlanan hayvanlar gibi ürünlerden hazırlanan yemekler sunan Färna Manor’ın restoranında günümü noktalayabilirim. Ancak İsveç yabanında gördüğümüz ayılar ve kunduzlarla yaşadığımız serüvenleri sindirmem gerek önce.

Just a stone’s throw away a beaver swims pass us. For a moment the large animal moves gracefully on the surface, before it becomes aware of us, slaps its tail loudly and dives. Pleased with the sighting we head back to Färna Manor where the aroma-infused spa is awaiting us and will lubricate my stiff limbs. Tomorrow’s agenda says moose safari or the Eco Lodge Kolarbyn, located in the forests of Bergslagen, a two-hour drive from Stockholm. I may crown the day at the restaurant of Färna Manor serving locally produced dishes, such as cheese from local dairies, fruits and vegetables from the mansion’s own gardens and game meat from the nearby forests. Before that the beaver and bear experiences will have to sink in thoroughly, deep within the Swedish wilderness.
