  • KYUNGGI NEWS 2015 Vol. 45 7

I received an e-mail from Project Medishare, shortly af-ter the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010. They were looking for doctors to volunteer for the medical relief mis-sion. After having had a 30-year private practice, I was looking toward retirement and hoping to do more non-profit work. When my plane taxied into the airport at Port-au-Prince that July, the sun was high and I could feel its heat like close fire, beaming like a beacon of hope. I had heard that the magnitude of the earthquake damage in Haiti was astounding and looking around the dilapidated airport, I could see everything I had heard was true, the garbage lined streets and the people living inside dirty vinyl tents or on the street, without running water, sanitation or elec-tricity. As soon as I arrived at Bernard Mevs hospital I went straight to work. My pediatric wing was a free standing concrete building comprised of 20 beds. I was told it was the only acute trauma and intensive care facility serving entire population of Haiti which made me a bit nervous and scared at first. The last time I administered critical care to this extent was when I was a chief resident at SUNY-Kings Country more than thirty years ago. Luckily the nurses and my younger colleagues had critical care at their fingertips. There I met Henrietta, a ten year old girl with fractured femur with external fixation with gruesome looking punc-ture site and Beatrice, a two year old infant with a head size of an ET and sunset eyes. I never saw so many hy-drocephalic infants until I went to Haiti and Isabelle, a 34-week premature infant, who had been brought in from a dumpster a few days before I started working. Isabelle opened my heart like no other. She was an incred-ibly cute infant with huge eyes, curly hair and long elegant fingers. Every time Id seen her, I said You will make a great pianist with those long fingers when you grow up I knew in the U.S. she had over a 90 percent chance of survival. I did my best to keep Isabelle away from the sick-er children, delighting in her progress toward health and growth. On my third night, a 17-month old infant with wheezing and respiratory distress was admitted through the ER. She was very sick and needed close monitoring for the first 24

hours. When she seemed to be turning the corner, I went to the staff lounge to grab a bite. My meals were normally dry food, mostly health bars which I grazed on while work-ing, but after a grueling time with this new patient, I felt I needed a regular meal. It was less than ten minutes, when I heard, Code Blue in Pediatrics! I ran back and saw Isabelle choking on her vomitus, gasping for air and turning blue. We tried to resuscitate her for the next two hours but she didnt come back. Soon another crisis point emerged for a young boy named Francois who was born with severe case of Pierre-Robin syndrome. He was constantly choking in spite of being kept upright at all times. Nguyen, my younger colleague, knew someone in Texas who was collecting the cases of Pierre-Robin and had a grant that would take care of all the expenses once the patient got to his medical center. But the Homeland Security was reluctant issuing Visas for Francois and his family to enter US. I pulled out my rolodex and went through all my contacts that might help us. I wrote e-mails to President Bill Clinton and UNSG, Ban Ki Moon.I also went to the UN field office to appeal in person. The visa came through and when I was watching Francois be-ing medevacd out, I felt some of the weight on my cross, lightened. I stayed for the week that I had signed up for but left that weekend, unable to bear any more heartbreak or responsibility. Marcus Cicero once said that the life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living, Isabelle will stay in my mem-ory for a long time. I am also haunted by the memories of those I was unable to help and those I left behind. As I was leaving, I found a small market place that sold paintings. They were mostly landscapes painted in bright colors. I bought a painting of a Haitian village with a bright sun shining in the sky as a symbol of hope which Haitian people so desperately needed. The painting hangs in my bedroom and I pray, the next time I visit Haiti, all things will be as bright as the sun painted in my village scene, the symbol of hope to which I have been waking each every morning.
