While phnom penh is a city of 2.2 millionpeople, theres a small-town feel aswell as an emerging sophisticationto the place. From wide, tree-lined

boulevards to the lively riverfront;from exotic Russian Market to trendywestern coffee shops. Youll find vividsilk fabrics mingled with handcarvedBuddhas, iced cappuccinos and freshoysters alongside hole-in-the-wall cafeswith fried crickets and fertilised duck

eggs. And wherever you go, youll finda smile on every corner.

    The Pearl of Asia, Phnom

Penh, is a thriving hub of

    activity with a tender soul,

    and its developing more

every day. Its authentic andmodern, old and new, exotic

    and passionate and gentle

    and embracing. You can start

    the day meandering through

    a local neighbourhood and

end it dancing in a trendy

    nightspot or sipping a

    cocktail overlooking the

    river.

    AREA 1

The eye-catching pagoda at Wat Phnom isunsurprising located on top of the small hill at thenorthern end of the city; unsurprising as phnom is

Khmer for hill. Legends about this hill and its relationto the founding of Phnom Penh abound, with onesaying that Lady Penh was a wealthy woman livingon the outskirts of the city who built a hill and smalltemple after fishing a tree from the river containingfour Buddha statues. With its surrounding garden, mischievous monkeys and the resident elephant,

the site is one of the citys foremost landmarksand attracts many visitors.

Colonial influences abound in the neighbourhood nearWat Phnom, leading it to be commonly known as theFrench quarter. The area boasts a number of Bellepoque and Art Deco houses and public buildings

dating back to the 19th century and is worth visitingto see structures such as the post office, nationallibrary, train station and the French Embassy.

The area is also home to a growing number ofhigh-class restaurants and bars, as well as anumber of high-end hotels. Many are housed in

impressive colonial buildings restored to theirformer glory often with a chic modern twist meaning you can combine historical sight-seeingwith an indulgent dinner.

In more recent times, Freedom Park

the space between streets 106and 108 has become something ofa gathering point for the politically-minded to stage various rallies andprotests. While refreshing to visitone of the citys few open spaces, this spot is best avoided during large

    demonstrations.

Instead, for a true Cambodian weekendexperience head to the night market atthe northern end of the riverside, open inthe evenings Fri-Sun. As well as shoppingamong the stalls and feasting on local

fare from the numerous food vendors, spare a moment for the antics on stage,as the live entertainment provides a light-hearted look at local teen culture.

If you thought a post office was

    just for mailing letters, think

again. The one in Phnom Penh

is one of a number of build-

    ings worth visiting for their

    architectural style. It was built

in French colonial style in the

    1890s, renovated in 2004 and,

    along with its neighbours, has

acted as a backdrop in several

    international movies.

Before the market came along, however,

Monivong remains the street of com-merce where youll find some excellentChinese restaurants, simple Khmer cof-fee houses and basic business enter-

prises. Norodom, on the other hand, isone of the most well-groomed streetsin the capital and features the statelyIndependence Monument at its heart. The boulevard is home to many of thecitys embassies and large mansions.Set between the two thoroughfares

want. Electronic equipment, suitcases, food, clothes, photocopied books andkramas (Cambodian sarongs). Theyreall there, along with colourful images ofstreet life in Phnom Penh.

Next to the market is Sorya Mall, eas-ily identified by the glass dome sit-ting atop its roof. As with many ofCambodias more modern shopping

centres, this offers an assortment ofclothing and electronics as well as awell-lit area of jewellery displays andthe ever-present Lucky supermarket. The top floor also houses an enter-tainment complex, including a cinemawhich shows a number of blockbust-

A little south of the market, Street 51hosts some of the citys more bustlingnightlife. Choose your drinking spothere with care, with bars & clubs rang-ing from live music venues to upper-

ciality stores. It is also home to themulti-coloured Kids City, 10 floors ofactivities for all ages with a soft playarea, climbing wall, ice skating, lasertag and more.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the leafy streets of BKK1 are one ofthe main expat centres of the city.Housing a vast number of apart-ments, shops, restaurants, travelagencies, realtors, bars and bou-

tiques, this is the main hub for ac-cessing all Western-style things.

    GOLDENSTREET

The section of Street 278 that starts at Wat Lanka in BKK1 is some-times referred to as Golden Street. Why? Well, theres the Golden Gatehotel, the Golden Bridge guesthouse, the Golden Star guesthouseand several more, giving rise to the quirky moniker for the streetwhich houses them.

Want to grab a coffee? Perhaps take in an open mic night? Chow down

on Indian dosa, Thai noodles or fish and chips? Or just get a good footmassage or manicure? Its all here on Golden Street.

You cant visit Phnom Penh without a night or two here. Located in theheart of a main expat neighbourhood, the tuk tuk and moto driversare out in full force and theres almost 24 hours of entertainmentfrom one end of the street to the other. Nighttime is alive with happy

Known to the locals as Toul TomPoung Market, this location wasso-named because it was the mar-ket frequented by foreigners dur-ing the 1980s when most of thosevisiting Cambodia were Russian.

It is now a colourful, fascinating

enclosed market on the southside of Phnom Penh with a largeand varied selection of vivid silks,hand-carved statues, local handi-crafts, jewellery, and souvenirs. The market also offers the largest

selection of good quality bootlegVCDs, DVDs and CDs in the city as

well as dozens of food vendors fry-ing, boiling and steaming delicioustreats all day long.

This rabbit warren of stalls maynot be the largest market inPhnom Penh, but is one of themost popular for tourists wishing

to find clothes, souvenirs and othertrinkets to take home.

The eye-catching Olympic stadium, or Na-tional Sports Complex, was designed byVann Molyvann and completed in 1963 forthe aborted SEA Games. It now houses an

Olympic-sized swimming pool, an indoorvolleyball court and a running track, aswell as being a focal point for daily outdoorexercise. Go there at sunset to watch (ortake part in) group aerobics, running andwalking activities around the track. Thestadium also has a darker side; during the

Khmer Rouge era, it was used as the site ofexecutions by the Khmer Rouge of officials.

Phnom Penh contains some significant sites fromrecent history, including the Olympic Stadium andToul Slengareas which are steadily becoming

    more developed.

One of Phnom Penhs main attractionsis the Tuol Sleng Museum of GenocidalCrimes, which was used by the KhmerRouge as a detention and torture cen-

tre in the late 1970s. Formerly a highschool, the Khmer Rouge renamedthe complex "Security Prison 21" (S-21) and turned it into a prison whichhoused approximately 17,000 peoplebetween 1975 and 1979. The buildingsare preserved as they were left when

the Khmer Rouge were driven out andtoday house exhibits, paintings andphotographs of many of the victims.

Further south, the Russian market isa good place for shoppers to pick upa bargain, although you may have tobarter hard. Avid clothes shoppers can

also check out the stores circling themarket, many of which stock similarselections for slightly higher prices, butwith the convenience of being able tobrowse in air-conditioning and accesschanging rooms. Once your shoppingis compete, the up-and-coming area

around the market now boasts a sur-prising number of cafes and restau-rants, ensuring you will not have to gofar to refuel with a filling lunch or findan iced drink to cool you down.
