INTRODUCTIONREALITYREALITY ANEW presents the works of Li Wei, who is internationally recognized as “China’s Number One Performance Artist”. This newest exhibition showcases photographs of his versatile performances that feature landscapes of Switzerland, France, Finland, Beijing and Hong Kong, exemplifying the artist's international outlook. Incorporating elements of pastiche and satire in his art works, Li Wei's whimsical representation of reality marvels the imagination of his viewers. The artist constantly challenges the limits of the human physique to inspire viewers to examine issues at fresh angles. He utilizes mirrors, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics in his photography and performance art as opposed to computer montages. While Li Wei's pursuit of his own artistic style is considered borderline dangerous by many, the artist enjoys the process of physical assertion and revels in the creation of imaginary realities. Graduating from the Oil Painting Department of the Oriental Culture and Art Institute in Beijing, Li Wei has been prominently featured in many notable publications. He has also been internationally exhibited in China, USA, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Italy, Japan and Cambodia. The artist lives and works in Beijing.

The original 8-meter tall stainless steel sculpture was erected in the lake in Februrary 1995 by Swiss artist Jean-Pierre Zaugg to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Vevev’s local museum dedicated to food – the Alimentarium.

UponUpon passing the sculpture, Li simply felt compelled to ”stick into the lake with the fork” (translation). According to Li, this gravitation towards Zaugg’s piece is due to its emblematic association with Western culture- the fork being analogous to its Chinese counterpart: chopsticks. The act was not planned but rather an impulsive enactment demonstrating his daring and adventurous mentality.

Li’s recent “Buddha” series take a slightly religious turn and is influenced by the popular Chinese mythology The Journey

to the West. “Buddha at St. Moritz”in particular plays with the traditional Buddhism imagery of the Buddha sitting on a lotus.

While lotuses grow in the mud, their flowers are clean and pure, symbolizing peacefulness amidst a chaotic world. Through

mimicking the imagery, Li presents a balance of mind. Spirituality aside, there is always a sense of humor and wild imagination

in Li’s work.
