Or you can pick up a CD from church. 2) Pray and ask God for insight as you do your personal study. 3) Answer the questions as well as you can. Don’t look for the only “right answer”, answer what you think and what the Lord brings to your mind 4) Read Acts 19 Opening Discussion: Discuss the meaning of the word “Spiritual” What was “John’s Baptism” that the Ephesian disciples refer to in vs: 3? (See John 1:15-18) How was their knowledge of the Gospel partial? How important is the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer? How did Paul respond to those that “rejected his message” vs: 9? What can we learn from this? Discuss the phrase in vs:11 “extraordinary miracles” (NIV) or “unusual miracles” (NLT). Ephesus was a center for magic and occult practices. Magical formulas and incantations were used to bring wealth, happiness and success. Superstition and sorcery were commonplace. Do you think this is still prevalent in today’s society? Discuss your answer? Read Deuteronomy 18: 9-13. God clearly forbids the practice of magic and divination. Why do you think God forbids these practices? Many Ephesians engaged in exorcism and occult practices for profit. The Sons of Sceva were impressed by Paul, who’s power to drive out demons came from God’s Holy Spirit, not from witchcraft. They discovered however that God’s power is accessible only through intimacy with Him. What lessons can we learn form the Son’s of Sceva? What was the immediate response by those in Ephesus who believed the Gospel message? (vs: 18-19) Do you think Demetrius and the craftsmen’s were motivated by spiritual or financial concerns? (vs: 23-27) Do you think resistance to the Gospel message today is motivated primarily by spiritual concerns or do you think the resistance may are have something to do with economic ramifications? And is there a connection between the two? Pray with and for one another! Prepare for next week by reading Ephesians Chapter 1 Send feedback to [email protected]
