HELLO, FRIENDS!

Welcome to Lillstreet Art Center. Artists of all backgrounds, from nov-ice to master, can find a place to learn inside our welcoming commu-nity. We began as an alternative arts space in a converted horse barn on Lill Street in 1975 and gradually evolved in to Chicago’s largest art center with 40,000 square feet to explore and create. We encourage you to spend time, interact, and learn more about our 8 departments, 50 plus studios, gallery, and artisan gift shop.

Our classes, workshops, and camps provide hands-on experiences for individuals of all ages to discover and develop their creative potential. In addition to 5 and 10-week class sessions every year, we bring in visiting artists from all over the world every month to conduct workshops in an effort to augment the artistic education at Lillstreet. Don›t hesitate to bring your friends as we frequently host teambuilding sessions, private art parties, and other group outings.

Looking to become more involved in cultural events with us? We regularly host gallery openings, First Fridays, parties, lectures, and many other community events throughout the year to help Lillstreet stay connected to the neighborhood and the wider Chicago popula-tion.

Inside our departments, meet the instructors, department heads, and artists-in-residence who provide mentorship to our students. Our Artist-in-Residence program offers working artists an opportunity to grow in their own medium, while offering inspiration, assistance, and new perspective to students.

This summer, we are excited to offer new classes, thrilling events, and dynamic exhibitions to make your experience more enjoyable. We are grateful for your involvement and contribution to our com-munity, and look forward to learning and creating with you as we continue to bring art to Chicago.

Please let us know how we can make your experience at Lillstreet the most enjoyable as possible and we hope you have a fantastic class.

S KOKESHI DOLLS IN CLAY(1DAY)

Kokeshi  (pronounced ko-kesh-ee) are dolls from northern Ja-pan. Traditionally handmade from wood, they have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of Kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the art-ist. In this workshop we will be making our Kokeshi dolls out of clay with emphasis on doll construction and surface treat-ment. All levels welcome.

SAM CHUNGSLAB DESIGN: MAKING POURING FORMS

Sam will be using paper patterns with slabs to construct hand-built pouring forms. Over the course of two days, he will demonstrate the construction of a teapot, pitcher and ewer using customized paper templates. This process begins with sketching forms and translat-ing these two-dimensional ideas into templates that will then be used to create three-dimensional slab form. Drawing is a key com-ponent to the making of forms, so one’s creativity is only limited by the ability to draw. Almost any form can be realized with this pro-cess, whether it is a body, lid, spout or handle. Discussion will focus on how ideas for pouring forms can be generated from a variety of sources, including function, ergonomics, history and design. This process incorporates the more intuitive act of drawing with the more mechani-cal method of building with pre-determined parts. Additionally, he will discuss construction strategies that can simplify one’s approach to slab building.
