Thank you to Mrs Danne and Mrs Hall who assisted our students and others at the zone level. It has been a busy week this week, with Interrelate sessions as well as Professional Learning for staff and our Kids Helpline Games and apps workshop. I trust that students, families and staff have all taken away some valuable information and strategies from these great learning opportunities. Finally, as we head into a weekend that celebrates International Women’s Day, I would like to quickly mention an interesting survey that was recently collected by PLAN International Australia. The data found that 91% of girls and young women surveyed expressed a strong desire to become leaders to tackle the biggest challenges of our time. They cited their mothers as their main source of support in their own lives and fierce female leaders as their inspirations. Some of the current leaders our Australian girls draw inspiration from are: Jacinda Ardern, Malala Yousazfai, Greta Thunberg, Emma Watson, Clementine Ford and Ash Barty. How wonderful that our girls are courageous, active and informed! Happy International Women’s Day everyone – enjoy your weekend and let’s celebrate the amazing women in our lives. Keep smiling Sara Swift, Principal

Dear parents/carers, Just a quick one from me this week! A huge congratulations to our zone swimmers who did exceptionally well on Tuesday and should be very proud of themselves. Staff report that the students were well behaved and happy. They achieved some personal bests and we have several competitors through to Regional level as well. School Photographs This year we will again be having our school photographs taken by Don Wood Photography. Photos are scheduled for Wednesday 18th March. All students are requested to wear full school uniform and black school shoes on photo day. Please remember we have transitioned to white socks for girls, so please wear these on photo day. There will once again be the opportunity for sibling photos to be taken. Notes and ordering information has been sent home, and is available from the front office. Details of how to order are also at the back of our newsletter. Sound Waves Update Sound Waves, our new, phonemic approach to spelling, is off to a great start across the school. Students are getting used to chanting their sounds, segmenting their words and representing phonemes (the sounds you hear) with graphemes (written representation of the sounds). A parent information session will be held at 9.20am on Monday 9th March in the library. Australian Mathematics Competition

In July this year we will be offering entry into the Australian Mathematics Competition. The AMC is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives; it is open to students in years 3 to 6. Participation is not compulsory, more details will be sent home soon. Pizza Day – Thursday 19th March Canteen made pizzas have been added to our menu! Students can have the opportunity to try out these tasty treats at our Pizza Day on Thursday 19th March. Notes and order forms have been sent home and are available from the front office. Mobile Phones A reminder to all parents that students are not allowed to have mobile phones at school. If your child brings a phone to school they must leave it at the front office and can collect it at the end of the school day. If you need to contact your child at school please phone the office and a message can be passed on.

Notes Sent Home The start of a new year is always a busy time. Thank you for your cooperation with returning permission slips and payments to school. The following payments are now being taken at the office: General school contribution $50.00 Workbooks and other fees Varied Dance Fees $130.00 Choir $60.00 Band (Term 1) $84.00 + Instrument hire Stage 3 Japanese Education Centre $25.00 Support Unit Sports Day $15.00 If you are wanting to discuss any of these payments please contact Donna or Jo at the office and we will be happy to assist. Missing PSSA Shirts It is requested that all year 4-6 parents please check for any School PSSA shirts not yet returned. The shirts were a very generous donation from the Crusaders Football Club to support the school sporting teams. 8 sets of 15 shirts were given so that no matter the season sports teams could proudly represent our school. Over 3 seasons shirts have not been returned leaving us with the sad fact that only 2 sets are now complete. 6 sets now have shirts missing. Please check carefully in bottoms of bags and bottoms of laundry piles for these shirts. The shirts make the students feel they are part of a team and it’s hard to do that with shirts missing. Could all shirts also be washed before they are returned. Important Notice to Parents Our duty of care is to ensure students are picked up from school by parents, family members or adults who are nominated as contacts on our records. If you wish to arrange for an alternate person to pick up your child from school we require a written letter of permission. In the coming weeks we will be sending a form home to all families so they can advise and update the details of their children’s regular pick up procedure (OOSH, bus, pick up by parent etc). If there are any changes to your child’s regular afternoon pick-up procedure please advise the school in writing.

Digital Technologies Survey Over the last few years there has been a dramatic increase in the availability and prevalence of mobile technology, including wearable technology, across all aspects of society, including in schools. Wearable technologies are computerized devices that can be worn on the body. They are most commonly worn as accessories (e.g. watches, fitness tracking bands, bracelets, glasses, etc.) Engadine PS is currently developing a digital device/wearable technology policy and is seeking your feedback regarding children's usage of digital devices. This includes mobile phones, smart watches, fitness trackers etc. Hard copies of our survey were sent home with students this week. Alternatively, if you would prefer to complete this survey online, please follow the link below: https://forms.gle/Rr2RSoD7sMVjK1aTA Harmony Day Celebrations – 23rd March Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. Read more at https://www.harmony.gov.au Engadine Public School invites students and parents to dress in their National costume, to help celebrate our diversity. Parents are invited to school at 9.30am on Monday 23rd March for the Grand Parade of National Costumes. Alternatively, students may dress in Orange. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. Students will also participate in Harmony Day activities in their classrooms and library lessons during this week. Students participating in the Grand Parade must bring orange clothing to change into at the conclusion of the parade. We look forward to the colour and energy this day will bring and thank you for your support.
