This questionnaire could be used prior to a CELTA online course.

1. If you had to learn something online, would you prefer to:

a) read a text and highlight/take notesb) watch a videoc) do some research and answer questionsd) find aspects in common among different elements (a text, a chart,

a picture etc)

The purpose of this question is checking what the favourite learning channel of the student is, visual, auditory, kinaesthetic or reading/writing).

2. Which of these activities would you find easier / more pleasant?

a) doing a puzzleb) solving a logics problemc) reflecting upon a problemd) drawing/choosing a picture to represent a probleme) talking to other people to solve a problemf) finding a song that would soothe a problemg) researching and reading to find solutions to a problem

The purpose of this question is checking which of the multiple intelligences is more developed in the student.

3. When you do an assignment in a course, how do you like to receive feedback (choose as many options as you want)?

a) from my peers, orally;b) from my peers, in written form;c) from my tutor, orally;d) from my tutor, in written form;e) with positive comments;f) with corrections;g) with a grade;

User, 10/07/14,
Great thought but not sure about the hypothetical nature of the question – the student is doing an online course. Is this your intention? If yes, I’d like to know more why.
User, 10/07/14,
Great but how would that affect your teaching on the online course?

h) without a grade.

The purpose of this question is checking how the student deals with feedback, if they prefer it to be more formal or more informal, more formative or more summative.

4. If you decided to take a course online, what do you think would be the best way for your tutors to help you?

a) It would be better to work with objective questions to have immediate online responses.

b) Providing extra reading texts.c) Via e-mail, whenever I had questions or whenever the tutors

found necessary.d) Via Skype or telephone, at some arranged hours.e) Via public forums, so that everyone in the course can profit from

each other’s questions.

The purpose of this question is checking how the student likes to receive feedback, and they deal with exposure, and also to measure anxiety to some extent.

5. What would motivate you in an online course (you can choose more than one alternative)?

a) The possibility of obtaining an award without having to move around.

b) The possibility of learning at my own pace.c) The possibility of liaising with people from all over the world.d) The possibility of acquiring new skills that would be useful in my

job/studies.

The purpose of this question is checking what kind of motivation the student has more predominantly, extrinsic, intrinsic, integrative or instrumental. This also helps mapping out affective aspects of the student.

6. In the pairs of sentences below, choose the alternative that best describes you better in each of the items:

( ) I need to receive positive ( ) Difficulties motivate me.

User, 10/07/14,
Is there an assumption that the student would take more online courses in the future – while the content and rationale for the question is valid, I’m not sure about the use of hypothetical would here. The questionnaire is for students are taking an online course – so you’re asking them about their motivation to do this course and not one in the future, right?
User, 10/07/14,
A hypothetical question – why? I know the questionnaire is not for an existing course but imagine it exists and a student taking the course sees this question.
User, 10/07/14,
A good selection of options but are all of them realistic and feasible in online environments? Also to what extent can a student decide what feedback they get – isn’t that prescribed to some extent at least by the course designer and/or tutor?

reinforcement to feel motivated.

( ) When I decide to do something, I finish it.

( ) When things become harder I tend to quit them.

( ) I am affected by criticism and negative feedback.

( ) I am not usually affected by criticism and negative feedback.

( ) I worry about what my peers will think/say.

( ) I don’t worry about what my peers will think/say.

( ) I am not defensive to feedback.

( ) I am sometimes defensive to feedback

The purpose of this question is checking some affective elements that might influence the student’s performance in an online course.

7. Rate your computer skills in the chart below:

Unsatisfactory Satisfactory Strong

1. How are you computer skills in general?2. How do you feel about about your internet connect?3. How confident are you to use browsers?4. How confident are you to use e-mails?5. How confident ate you to use word processors?6. How confident are you to use search engines?

The purpose of this question is checking if the student has basic computer skills to attend the course.

8. How do you organize your day? How much time would you dedicate to this course?

The purpose of this question is checking the candidates organization.

9. Have you ever taken an online course? How was your experience?a) excellent

User, 10/07/14,
Hmm, wouldn’t it be worthwhile to be a bit more specific and ask precisely about time and task management skills, meeting deadlines, prioritising tasks and so on. The question about the amount of time they would dedicate is a tricky one and probably valid if the students first know what the minimum time requirement is (this is decided by the course designer).
User, 10/07/14,
Please proofread your work for double items and occasional typos – they happen even to the best ;-)
User, 10/07/14,
Excellent – a really good selection of questions eliciting answers in regard to various affective aspects. Why did you go for pairs of statements and not scales to allow the students a more nuanced response? That’s not a criticism, just curious. Would it be good to specify that the questions relate to learning?

b) goodc) satisfactoryd) unsatisfactory

The purpose of this question is checking if the student has already had some experience taking an online course and how they felt about it.

10. Is there any thing that might prevent you from successfully completing the course work?

The purpose of this question is checking if the student will have some impediment to take the course.

User, 10/07/14,
Another good question on the condition that the students are already familiar with the course requirements and so are able to assess objectively if something can prevent them or not.
User, 10/07/14,
I feel this is an important question as it allows you to predict students’ attitudes and behaviours. I wonder why you wouldn’t like to know what made their experience excellent or unsatisfactory. In the end these evaluative adjectives are quite ambiguous and it would be worth uncovering the underlying reasons, don’t you think?
