University of North Texas dance students performed in a workshop to prepare for Heard.

Horse playIt’s taken months, but the

University of North TexasInstitute for the Advance-

ment of the Arts will unveil thework of its 2012 fellow today.

Heard will bring a curious“herd” of “sound suits” to life onthe lawn between Curry Halland the UNT Art Building at12:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Sound suits are an inventionof Cave’s — a hybrid of fiber art, sculpture, puppetry and per-formance art. Cave has con-structed these suits for years, and the fantastic creations aremeant to be worn by a perfor-mer who moves while wearingthem, thus creating the soundeach suit is designed to make.

Cave, an installation artistand former member of the AlvinAiley American Dance Theatre, worked with UNT art, fashiondesign and dance students tocreate 30 sound suits that, inperformance, will imitate thelook and sensation of horses.Members of the community alsohelped make the suits.

The 30 suits include horseheads covered with raffia overan armature of metal and hard-ware cloth, as well as horsebodies covered in raffia.

In an interview during hisfirst few days at UNT, Cave saidhe looks to create stimulatingmoments that stop viewers intheir tracks.

“If you came around a cornerand saw a herd of horses down-town, wouldn’t you just have tostop and watch?” Cave said.

The final performance ofHeard will be at 1:30 p.m.Sunday at the Nasher Sculp-ture Center, 2001 Flora St. indowntown Dallas. Admissionis $10 for adults, $7 for seniors,$5 for students and free forsculpture center members.

C.B. swapsphilosophies with his bestfriend and stoner, Van (DucNguyen). C.B. argues with hissister (Melanie Welch), whohas bigger issues on her plate— namely an identity crisis. Finally, C.B. visits his institu-tionalized girlfriend (could it

be that cute little red-headedgirl?), but ends up falling forthe last person he everthought might catch his eye.

That wacky weedTimothy Wilson saw an

opportunity to riff on aparticular campaign of

fear when he collaborated withstudents to create ReeferMadness.

In 1936, the film Tell YourChildren was released. Itsintent? To cast a cautionary taleagainst marijuana — or “reefer”— cigarettes far and wide. Itwas financed by a coalition ofchurch members who wantedto teach parents about the dan-gers of smoking marijuana.

It became a cult classic. Thefilm inspired a 1998 musical. The musical inspired theUniversity of North Texas stag-ing by Wilson, a UNTDepartment of Dance andTheatre Arts faculty member, who created the local musicalin collaboration with co-direc-tor and UNT student TonyCapps. Students took the leadin designing the stage, lighting, sound, hair and makeup. Arecent UNT graduate is thechoreographer. Guest artistsRic Leal and Hans Grimm arethe costume designer andmusical director, respectively.

Wilson said a play wouldn’thave succeeded. The subjectmatter calls for a musical treat-ment to reduce the hysteria andridicule the extremist message. It’s the kind of play that has togo over the top to win its audi-ence, Wilson said.

“And it does go over the top atevery opportunity,” Wilson said.“There are tender moments —but the chance for exaggerationis wonderful to play with.”

Performances are 7:30 p.m.today through Saturday, and 2p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All

performances are in the Uni-versity Theatre, located on thefirst floor of the Radio, Tele-vision, Film and PerformingArts Building, at the corner ofWelch and Chestnut streets.

Tickets cost $15 for adults;$10 for UNT students, faculty,

staff and seniors. To make reser-vations, call 940-565-2428.Tickets are available at the boxoffice before performances.

The musical is rated R for lan-guage, violence, implied druguse and sexually explicit images.

Tex Zimmerman couldn’tsit back and watch the50th birthday of a Bob

Dylan classic pass without fan-fare.

On Sunday, Tex Zimmer-man and His All-Star Revuewill lead Dan’s Silverleaf inwishing many happy returnsto “Blowin’ in the Wind.” TexZimmerman is a Dylan-devot-ed musical persona of Dentonjazz musician Mike Steinel.

Dylan told the press that in1961, he was disappointed bythat year’s release, Bob Dylan.Within weeks of releasing theself-titled album — which in-cluded just two original songs— Dylan began writing astream of protest songs thatwould take him two years tocomplete.

“Blowin’ in the Wind” wasamong them. Dylan said hewrote the song in 10 minutes; itbecame the song that charac-terized his early sound.

Tex Zimmerman againassembles his favorite musi-cians to perform Dylan’s 1962protest songs.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Liam Neeson plays Zeus in a scene from Wrath of the Titans.

Gods among ants

By Roger MooreMcClatchy-Tribune News Service

What’s the old saying— “3-D fool meonce, shame on you,

3-D fool me twice, shame onme?”

Clash of the Titans was anearly humorless, overly digi-tized remake of a piece ofsword-and-sorcery cheese fromthe 1980s, an inoffensive big-budget trifle whose biggest sinwas a post-production conver-sion to 3-D.

The Titans sequel wasn’tconverted, so the 3-D is a lotbetter. And the director ofBattle Los Angeles and thescreenwriters give it a lightertouch, a bit of mythic whimsyamongst all the muddle aboutgods, demigods, the father ofgods and the end of the age ofgods.

In a boulder-strewn Greekpast of volcanoes, but no trees,Perseus (Sam Worthington, stoic as ever) is living the lifeof a village fisherman and sin-

gle dad to Helius (John Bell). The kid is growing up withoutreligion, without his grandpa. That’s because Perseus knows“There’s no such thing as ‘goodgods,’” and his dad, Zeus(Liam Neeson, giving morethan Titans deserves), isentirely too busy for grandpar-enting.

He’s too busy narrating.“The time of the gods is end-

ing,” Zeus narrates.Hades (Ralph Fiennes,

always interesting) aims to has-ten that. “You’re sweating like ahuman, brother,” Hades purrs.“Next, it’ll be tears.”

Hades traps Zeus in theunderworld with the help ofanother of Zeus’ sons, Ares(Edgar Ramirez), god of war.Perseus must round up a teamand go get ’em, before god ofgods Kronos cracks free andgods and men are drowned in a

sea of lava.First among them is

Andromeda, a vision in blondhair and armor played byRosamund Pike. Bill Nighysteals the movie as Hephaestus, blacksmith and armorer to thegods. He makes the old tinker-er a crackpot who carries onconversations with himself,Gollum-style.

Then, there’s the disrep-utable son of Poseidon, “TheNavigator” Agenor, given abemused spin by Toby Kebbell. He’s a reluctant recruit.

“Would you do me a favor?”he asks Perseus. “Go to hell.”

So we know where this isgoing, and we know who’ll bein the final brawl. But directorJonathan Liebesman andcompany keep this strippeddown (few gods, not too muchdialogue) and manage a fewsurprises and a little fun onthe trip. They even trot outDanny Huston as Poseidon, ina beard and get-up thatremind us that his dad, JohnHuston, once played Noah onthe big screen.

Yes, this Titans is going toyou-know-where. At least thisone manages to make the 3-Dride worth the destination.

The event is a provocativetrip through the “arts triangle”on the campus, starting at thePioneer Woman statue andmoving from performance toperformance.

Once tourists arrive at thePioneer Woman statue, theTWU science department — aguest of the arts school at thisyear’s event — presents “TheMagic of Chemistry” show. With carefully planned interac-tions and maybe some sleightof hand, science faculty andstudents will draw out some“oohs” and “aahs.”

As soon as the magic is over, tourists will cross the PioneerCircle to the south, stopping atthe front of the Fine ArtsBuilding, where theater stu-dents will perform a short play.

From the play, tourists willmove on to the Ann StuartScience Complex, where a stu-dent drum circle from themusic department will play onthe lawn between the sciencecomplex and the Bralley Annex.

The rhythm continues as thecrowd moves to the lawn southof the science complex, whereWrk’n Progress will perform ahip-hop piece by choreogra-pher Alex Benavides. The per-formers will shift between fast,high-energy dancing and slow-er movements.

Attendees then will walkalong the north end of the sci-ence complex, where the duo ofBenson Lee and Daniella Tollwill be playing a selection fromFifteen Duos for Two Violinsop. 85 by J. Mazas.

From there, the audience willmove to the amphitheater on

the east side of the sciencecomplex to hear Joni Jensenleading students from theTWU Concert Choir in choralselections.

After that, tourists will enterthe glass atrium and foyer ofthe science complex to beentertained on three levels ofthe building. Drama studentswill do improvisational pieceson the stairs and landings ofthe three-story structure.

Visitors will exit the sciencecomplex and go to the northend of the sidewalk, close toMargo Jones PerformanceHall. They’ll encounterMachine Error, a collaborationby dance majors Tara Bakerand Annabelle Chen involvinga live, New Age silent film.

Then, attendees will get arare chance to see what per-formers, technicians and run-ning crews see: the backstageof Margo Jones hall. The groupwill enter the space through therear entrance, crossing throughthe backstage, across the stage,

and finding their seats. Before they can take a seat,

visitors will see a modern danceperformance called Brujas, presented by CholoRock DanceTheatre, in the seating area.CholoRock Dance Theatre wasfounded and directed by TWUdance graduate Jose Zamora.Set to the music of the Mexicanstate of Veracruz, Brujas prom-ises passionate choreography tofolk music. (Brujas is Spanishfor “witches,” so some kind ofspell will surely be cast.)

After guests are seated, themain performance, The Fluteon Its Feet, will begin.

The performance includesclassics of the flute repertoire, new works by American com-posers, and pieces choreo-graphed for flutist and dancerZara Lawler by C. Neil Parsons.Students from all disciplinesfrom the School of the Arts willparticipate in the performance.

The audience should look formore than dancers, musiciansand actors. Site-specific piecescan be spied during the walk, including works from TanyaSynar’s sculpture program andby students of Colby Parsons’ceramics program.

Artwork by TWU studentswill be presented during thereception, and a brass quintetwill perform a variety of choralsby Bach as well as Three Piecesby L. Maurer. The quintetincludes TWU music studentsEmily Hartnack and AliciaJones on trumpet, Samuel Guz-man on horn, Danielle White-side on trombone and LauraDerousselle on euphonium.
