    y Mauritius is generally not a busy place but its mostfamous tourist spot, Grand Bay with its amount of

    restaurants, its bars and discotheques is probably theonly place giving the impression of nightlife.Depending on the period, it can get busy in peakseasons, especially in December / January.

    Pamplemousses Gardens

    The famous Pamplemousses Garden, ranking amongthe finest botanical gardens in the world, was

    established in 1735 by Mah de Labourdonnais, withMon Plaisir Castle once his residence. The 60-acregarden boasts 500 different species of plants, of which80 are palms. Of particular interest are the giant

    water-lilies, a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, saidto flower every 60 years after they die.

    Mauritius Tourist Attraction: East

    Introduction

    The East Coas of Mauritius t is the region that haswitnessed most rapid tourist development in the last 10

    years. Apart from the private bungalows that were builtthere since the 1920's or so, the East coast was left wildfor many years.

    The first two modern hotels were built there in the 70's;

    they remained on their own for approx 10 years untilthe promoters, local and international understood thegreat potential of the longest and nicest beach of "BelleMare."

    Trou d'eau Douce

    Trou d'eau Douce is like most coastal regions, aweekend and summer resort for those who own beach

    cottages, but it is also a fishermen's village. Trou d'eauDouce remained the remote coastal village despite theemergence of hotels nearby. The houses are modestbut well kept and are generally hidden behind as muchtrees and plants as it is possible to grow in the tinysurfaces of their gardens.

    DomaineDu Chasseur

    At Anse Jonche in the south-east, high in thehills overlooking Vieux Grand Port Bay, lies the

    private land of the Domaine du Chasseur. Itconsists of 3000 acres of tropical forest inhabitedby hundrets of javanese stags, wild boars,monkeys and thousands of birds, among which isthe nearly extinct Mauritian kestrel. Thisenchanting place is a must for hunters and naturelovers.
