Energy rationalization policies and optimization of natural resources usage underpin the new approach that GCC countries are taking in managing their energy portfolio. Better management of existing natural resources, no matter how abundant, energy supply security as well as increasing environmental consciousness will be defining to a large extent the future energy landscape.

The region is still at the early stages of the transformation process with few pilot projects already implemented or announced and the majority of projects still to come; however, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), and Solar in particular, are gaining momentum and are firmly entrenched in all future energy mix scenarios. The resilience of solar systems and low O&M costs in harsh conditions are suitable for the region’s environment and result in overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) attractiveness, both for large utility-size on-grid as well as smaller on-grid or off-grid installations.

Hybrid Energy Systems are emerging as a sensible way of electrification in remote areas with no power grid. Traditionally served by diesel generators, this market is rapidly transforming to a mainstay of RES power. The steady price reductions in PV equipment and the significant O&M costs of conventional technologies, enhance the TCO attractiveness of solar which surpasses diesel-powered solutions and on occasion approaches Grid Parity.

All types of RES can be used, if the application justifies their economic viability, but successful integration of multiple RES is a challenging task requiring specialized and application-dependent know-how that is only achieved through design, installation, operation, monitoring and optimization of hybrid installations.

Energy Storage is also a vital component and a critical success factor for the success of hybrid systems relying on intermittent RES. Battery banks of various technologies are the prevalent hybrid storage medium; hydrogen and compressed air technologies are viable alternatives.

Finally, Solar Diesel applications have gained traction lately due to the attractive economics of PV systems. Major vendors are marketing “Fuel-Saver” products that integrate PV production in diesel-powered grids and result in significant fuel and maintenance savings.

EUROSOL has been active in the region since 2013 and, in cooperation with reputable equipment suppliers, has been designing, offering and installing Solar, Hybrid and Solar-Diesel solutions of various sizes. Current market demand places Hybrid systems with Energy Storage as the core of offerings followed by Solar Diesel and solar plants for self-consumption. However, EUROSOL is closely monitoring the evolution of regional plans for larger solar plants and is preparing for active involvement at the time of realization.
