Contractor Helps Provide Solution to Flint Water Crisis

    By James McRaySpecial to ceG

in the wake of the Flint water crisis, ahuge spotlight has been turned on infrastruc-ture in american, and specifically, the coun-trys miles-long network of aging under-ground water pipes. While there are newshort term efforts to bring fresh water intoFlint, plans have been in the works for sev-eral years that should provide a long-termsolution.

in 2013, ground was broken on theKaregnondi Water authority (KWa)pipeline, a multi-year water intake pipelineproject that will bring raw water 75 mi. (120km) from lake Huron west along the i-69corridor through Michigans Sanilac, lapeer, St. clair and Genessee counties;including servicing the city of Flint.

the $285 million projectyears in themakinghas many parts: a new waterintake facility which bores 6,000 ft. (1,828m) into lake Huron, two water treatmentplants, plus three new pump stations. Buteven with all the peripheries, the KWapipeline project is just that: a pipeline.

in 2013, Zito construction, headquarteredin Grand Blanc, Mich., was contracted bythe KWa to install 36-in. (91 cm) diametersteel class 150 pipe along an approximately14-mi. (21 km) stretch of the main line fromGenessee to lapeer county. that completedin 2014, the authority again awarded Zito anapproximately $18 million contract to install68,500 linear ft. (20,878 km) of much larger60 in. (152 cm) diameter spiral weld steeltransmission pipe across parts of lapeercounty.

Zito began the second portion of the

pipeline in april 2015. With such a distanceto cover, Zito is installing extremely long 50-ft. (15.2 m) joints of pipe. the more than1,600 jumbo pieces of pipe are being placedin an open cut trench ranging from 5 to 25 ft.(1.5 to 7.6 m) deep. Because the trenchis deeper than 5 ft. (1.5 m), a trench protec-tion system is required. and therein lies thebiggest challenge for the veteran under-ground utility contractor.

Big Pipe, Big Trench Shoring Challenge

there are only so many ways to shore atrench and still be able to install pipe 50 feet

long, with soil conditions typically being theprimary factor driving the choice of trenchprotection system.

Ground conditions along the pipelinecan best be described as sandy toswampy, said Jeremy Drielick Sr. engi-neering technician of Rowe professionalServices company, the engineering firmresponsible for Zitos second portion of theKWa pipeline. and that about covers it.

Because of the ground conditions, weknew we couldnt slope the trench and nottake out the whole road in some places, saidJohn Zito, president of his namesake compa-ny. if we could have sloped it we mighthave moved along faster, but sloping orsome kind of shoring just wasnt economi-cal, he said. We knew we were going toneed a [trench] box. a very big trench box.

    Trench Shielding and Shoring Manufacturer

    Efficiency Production ProvidesEasy Solution

even with the trench protection systemdecided, Zito still faced many challenges.the question still remained, how do youinstall 50 foot sticks of pipe in a trench box?For help, Zito turned to the companys go-tosource for underground safety-related equip-mentMid-Michigan-based efficiencyproduction, the nations leading manufactur-er of trench shielding and shoring, accordingto the company.

its actually not as hard as you mightthink, said Mike West, efficiencyproductions vice president of engineering.Weve built several custom trench shieldsin the past exactly for the same purpose, installing joints of pipe 50 feet or longer, he

said. the key is designing a box withenough pipe clearance so the contractor canangle the pipe into the box and under spread-er arches.

Custom Trench Boxes With High-Clearance Arches ProvidePlenty of Room for Pipe Installefficiencys solution is accomplished by

using two trench shields with custom high-clearance arches instead of spreader pipe onthe abutted ends of the boxes.

the shields we built for Zito, however, are different in that the lead box is so muchlonger than the trailing box, said West. What you end up with is a lot of space toget the pipe into the front box and under thearches, and then just enough space in thesecond box to shield the connection work,he said.

Zitos custom trench shields are a combi-nation of a HDHt12-842 steel trench shieldwith 12-in. (30 cm) thick sidewalls, 8 ft. (2.4m) high, and 42 ft. (12.8 m) long; adjoinedwith an XlD-816 steel trench shield with 4-in. (10 cm) thick sidewalls, 8 ft. high and 16ft. (4.8 m) long. each box has a high-clear-ance arch on one end that are abutted to eachother, and the boxes are secured togetherwith shackles for easy pulling through thetrench. the opposite end of each trenchshield has 9 ft. (2.7 m) spreaders to match theoverall width of the arches.

the result is a trench shield almost 60 ft.(18.2 m) long with more than 11 ft. (3.3 m)of pipe clearance; plenty of room for Zitosexcavator operator and crew to angle thespigot end of the pipe into the connectedboxes and up to the bell end of the installed

Zito is installing extremely long 50-ft. (15.2 m) joints of pipe.

The jumbo pipe is being installed withintwo specially designed EfficiencyProduction-manufactured trenchshields, both with high-clearance archeson the adjoining end of the boxes.

Work is continuing on the KWA pipeline,a multi-year water intake pipeline proj-ect that will bring raw water 75 mi. (120km) from Lake Huron west along the I-69 corridor, including servicing the cityof Flint.
