As I write this, I think about the past couple of months and how the MINS family has gradually grown and made more progress. In your hands, you have our latest work and records of what we have accomplished and where we’re heading . Are you a young Chinese person planning to study abroad? Good for you.

You've taken your first step into a much larger world. I applaud your bravery. However, nothing can prepare you for the immense culture shock that awaits you. For a student, one aspect of culture shock you should be aware of is the difference in education. My friend and MINS teammate Jan Drabik wrote an article called Why Hasn't China Won A Nobel Prize? Jan is a teacher at Qingdao University. In her article, she explains that Chinese education is the reason that no Chinese person from Mainland China has won a Nobel Prize. My aim in this article is not to criticize Chinese education, but rather to educate young Chinese on what they can expect from the Western education system. It's my wish to use many of Jan's points to illustrate the main differences b e t w e e n t h e t w o s y s t e m s . Hopefully, this information can help young Chinese who wish to study abroad.

Learning versus Memorizing

Learning the basics of any subject is cr i t ica l . However, i t ' s how you take those basics and apply them elsewhere that is even more important. In the first part of her article, Jan writes: Chinese often r efer to the fact that Chinese students “learn knowledge” and Chinese teachers “teach knowledge”, while Western students and Western teachers do not. They report this with great pride as evidence of the superiority of the Chinese education system. I think they must be referring to the teaching and memorizing of facts. Few Western teachers stress memorizing as a critical skill in today’s world. In the West, we don’t learn “knowledge”

or teach “knowledge”; we just LEARN or TEACH. In the West, learning occurs in stages fr om “memoriz ing f a c t s ” t o “ b u i l d i n g kn ow l e d g e ” (i.e., combining facts you’ve memorized in ways that allow you to handle real situations or to solve real problems) to finally acquiring “wisdom” (i.e., learning to go beyond the facts you’ve learned to new levels of understanding). Unfortunately, the Chinese education system stresses the very least productive of these levels of learning – memorizing facts. (Drabik, Why Hasn't China Won a Nobel Prize?, pg. 1)

If you're going to take a test in a Western University, it's important to keep in mind that the teachers a r e n o t o f t e n i m p r e s s e d by how much you can memorize. Memorizing itself is not a reflection of understanding. Think of it like taking a picture of information in your brain, and then showing it to the teacher later on. Does that mean that you understand what's in the picture, or how it came to be formed? What teachers in the West often want to know is: How can this picture lead to, affect or be affected by other pictures? Your talent for memorizing will only take you past your first stage of learning in a Western University. It's your responsibility to absorb what you’ve memorized and expand on what you have learned. It's up to you to apply your own talents and abilities to enrich the knowledge that you have just gained. It's not the teacher's job to spoon feed you information. You have to be proactive in your approaches for studying and learning:

True learning is not memorizing the periodic table or being able to recite the Law of Thermodynamics. That’s just getting the fundamentals in your head. True learning comes from what you ADD, not from

what you read or copy. Albert Einstein is not remembered for what he memorized in order to master the basics of physics; he’s remembered for what he ADDED to the body of learning. (Drabik, pg 2)

Plagiarism Is Not Tolerated.

I've noticed that in China it's often acceptable for students to copy information from other sources while compiling a thesis. Ok. If that 's acceptable here, there's nothing I can do to change that. However, if you copy information from other sources and present it as your own, you are taking a very big risk. Why? In Western Universities, this is considered academic theft, dishonesty, and is punishable by law. You can be kicked out of university and become blacklisted, which means that you can never go to university for the rest of your life, anywhere. Not only that, but depending on the seriousness of your case, you could go to jail for some time. It's that serious. If you're going to study abroad, please take my words seriously. The information you copy comes from other sources. People who are experts in their fields created it. Their books, theses, essays and other works are published and are property. To steal their ideas is to steal property. When writing a thesis, you are expected to use other sources, but you must give credit to the sources you use and then come to your own conclusion. Teachers don't care about what's already been written. They care about how you understand it and how you analyse it. Drabik writes:

In Thesis Writing classes, students (often) copy. They...pull key sentences from sources, although they rarely acknowledge those sources adequately. They write page after page of copy – but they never come to a

point or present a position of their own. No matter how many times I remind them that you don’t win a Nobel Prize for work that has already been done, they rarely do more than copy. They (students) lack analytical ability – the ability to turn “knowledge” into true learning . (Drabik, pg 2)

It is not my intension to criticize or offend, but merely to inform. As a Chinese student studying abroad, you should know and be sensitive to issues of Intellectual Property Rights. This may be a big culture shock to you, but it is a critical issue in the West and you must be ready for that. You have to be willing to adjust to the system and know the risks and challenges that face you if you choose to study abroad or to submit research to Western institutions like the Nobel Committee. You can have a great experience studying abroad that will allow you to grow. On the other hand, if you are not sensitive to this very serious Western issue, it could be problematic for you in your university career.

我的朋友，敏思俱乐部的同事之一，Jan Drabik写了一篇文章，名叫《为什么中国还没得诺贝尔奖？》。Jan是青岛大学的一位老师，在文章中，她解释说，中国大陆没有人得诺贝尔奖的原因在于教育。我的这篇文章并不是批判中国的教育，而是告诉中国的年轻人，能从西方的教育中吸取到什么。我借用了许多Jan的观点来说明中西教育的不同，并且真诚地希望，这篇小文可以对打算去海外求学的中国年轻人有所裨益。

学习 VS 记忆

学好基础知识对任何一门课程都十分关键，但是怎样学以致用是更重要的。在其文章的第一部分，Jan写道：

中国学生们经常提及他们在学习“知识”，而老师是在传授“知识”，而西方的师生们则情况相反。中国人非常自豪地将学习“知识”和教授“知识”作为显示中国教育体系优越性的证明，而实际上是“死记硬背”。而现在，很少有西方的老师会强调记忆的重要性。在西方，我们不是学知识或教知识，我们是学习和教授如何运用。

在西方，学习是从记忆到建构，再到获得智慧的过程，（首先，结合所学知识将其运用到实际中或者解决实际的问题。然后学习超越你所学到的原有知识，达到一个新的理解水平。）不太幸运的是，中国的教育体系只注重了最基本的和最缺乏成效的一点— 记忆知识（Drabik,《为什么中国还没得诺贝尔奖？》第一页）。

如果你参加一个西方大学举行的测试，一定要知道西方老师不会注重你能记住多少知识。记忆本身不是理解的反映，而是像在大脑中拍张照片，一会儿拿给老师看。那能意味着你理解照片里的东西或者照片的成像原理吗？

西方老师想要知道的是：这张照片导致的结果，对其它照片的影响或者所受的影响。记忆的好功夫恐怕只能帮你度过西方大学的第一学习阶段。你的职责是吸收所记忆的知识并在所学知识的基础上加以补充。你要运用自己的智慧和能力扩展所学的知识，老师不会总是手把手地教你，把知识灌进你的脑中。你必须主动寻找学习和研究的方法。

真正的学习并不是仅仅记住元素周期表或是能够背诵热力学法，那仅仅是掌握了基础知识。真正的学习不是你读到的或者抄的东西，而是自己所创造的东西。爱因斯坦并不是因为他背过了基础物理学的知识而被人铭记，相反，人们记住他是因为他在已学知识基础上的创

造和发现。（Drabik, 《为什么中国还没得诺贝尔奖？》第二页）。

不容剽窃

在中国，我注意到当写论文的时候，学生们可以“借用”别的资源。好吧，既然要入乡随俗，我也毋需改变什么。

但是，在西方，如果从别处抄袭，并且据为己有，那么你将有大麻烦。为什么呢？因为西方的大学里，这种行为就是学术剽窃，不诚实，并且会依法处置。你会被勒令退学，并且列入黑名单，被剥夺了后半生上任何大学的权利。

不仅如此，根据情节严重性，还有可能被捕入狱，我绝不戏言。如果你打算去国外深造，请记住我的忠告：你所抄袭的，是人家的资源，是专业领域中的专家所创造的。书籍，论文、随笔以及其它出版物，都是私人的财产，窃取观点无异于偷盗财产。当写论文时，你可以用其它的资源，但是必须确保所使用资源的可信度，并得出自己的结论。西方老师们并不在意你写了什么，他们更在意你怎么理解问题和分析问题。

在论文写作课上，学生剽窃。他们从有用的资源里截取句子，但是从来没有充分地吸收这些知识。他们一页一页地照抄，但是没有提出任何自己的立场和观点，也没有得出任何结论。不论我多少次提醒他们抄袭是根本得不到诺贝尔奖的，但他们只是充耳不闻。学生们缺乏分析能力，也即是学以致用的能力。（Drabik, 《为什么中国还没得诺贝尔奖？》第二页）。

我无意于批判或者指责，而是想告诉你们：作为一位在海外求学的中国学生，你必须了解知识产权法，并且对其十分敏感。可能对你来讲，这是个很大的文化冲击，但是在西方，这尤为重要。因此要做好准备。如果有意留学海外，或者向诺贝尔委员会这样的科研机构提交研究成果，你必须适应西方的制度，并且面对风险和挑战——这样求学海外可以使你获取很多经验并真正成长。然而，反之，你对此类事情不敏感的话，你的求学生涯将一波三折。

These are just my thoughts a b o u t d i f f e r e n t w a y s of raising a child under

different philosophies – Chinese and Western philosophy. We can hardly say which one is better as they both have advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s step back at f irst to see the differences between the two societies. China is traditionally a communitarian society, in which the idea is to leave a legacy to their community, and for members to have a larger purpose than individual selves. Western society is more focused on the development of the individual.

It is possible that based on this Chinese traditional philosophy, it explains why Chinese parents focus on their child's education in terms of values like respect for elders (Confucian concept of li), good manners, good academic outcome, and self-discipline. This can also explain why grandparents in China do the majority of the child raising.

While in the West the major part of parenting is done by the parents. Western parents value things like perceiving sense of humor, self-confidence, independence, health, and openness. That is why parents in the West educate their child not only by showing and by doing like everyone else, but also by learning through experience.

Let me explain this further with a story that was told by a Chinese woman. One day this woman went to the beach where she observed a Western couple with a toddler. While the toddler was playing by himself in the sand, the parents just watched him. After a while the little child grabbed a handful of sand and put it into his mouth. The woman was almost going to stop the child from eating sand, but the parents refused to let her do that. The woman was confused to some degree, because she thought, "How can a ‘good’ parent let their child eat sand?" The parents countered

the woman's question with another question: "How can a child truly know what is good or bad if parents always stop the child from experiencing what is good or bad?"

There is also a major difference in the education systems of the two societies. Western schools focus on getting the full potential out of every individual. For example: letting students anticipate and analyze an experiment. They are also encouraged to ask challenging questions, while Chinese students tend to concentrate on memorizing material without asking questions or discussing the content. Western children are taught to use what they're told, whereas in China, students are taught to do what they're told. - Bernd Grieger

关于中西教育的几点思考

从中西哲学的角度来看，中国和西方的孩子培育方式是不同的，以下是我的一些想法。我们不能说哪种方式更优越，因为两者都有优点和缺点。

追其根源，首先，中西社会是不同的。中国一直是一个提倡共产主义的社会，观念上认为财产共有，强调集体利益，而不重视个人利益。西方社会更看重个人的发展。

可能基于中国的这些传统哲学，我们能解释为什么中国家长看重孩子是否尊重长辈，（儒家“礼”的思想），行为得体，学识丰厚，并且懂得自律。以上也可以解释为什么在中国，祖父辈教育孩子的情况居多。

但是，在西方，教育孩子的任务主要由父母承担。西方父母更看重幽默感、自信、独立、健康和外向。这就是为什么西方父母不仅通过告诉孩子怎样做，像谁那样做，而且还通过让孩子亲身经历去教育孩子。

让我用一个中国女士所讲的故事来更深入地说明这个问题。一天，这位女士在海边看到了一对外国夫妇带着他们刚蹒跚学步的小孩。那个孩子自己在沙滩上玩，而父母只在旁边看着他。过了一会儿，那孩子抓起一把沙子，看架势就是要塞进嘴里。这位中国女士想上前阻止孩子吃沙子，但是那对外国夫妇拒绝了她的好意。她心里有些纳闷：称职的父母怎么能让孩子吃沙子呢？外国夫妇解释道，如果父母总是告诉孩子什么是好的，什么是不好的，而阻止他们自己去尝试，孩子怎么能真正分清是非呢？

中西社会的教育体系也有很大不同：西方学校重视怎样最大限度地发挥每个学生的潜力，比如让学生预测和分析试验的结果，鼓励学生提问挑战性的问题等等。而中国的学生倾向于不加思考地背诵材料,并且事先并不进行讨论。西方人教育孩子学以致用所学知识，而在中国，孩子们按部就班听从师长。- Bernd Grieger

I w a s i m p r e s s e d b y t h e Svetlana’s sisters when they told me they had traveled to

China by themselves. Sophia (14) and Taisia (11) took the plane from their hometown of Khabarovsk in Russia to Harbin and another plane to Qingdao to visit their elder sister Svetlana who is studying MBA postgraduate degree at Ocean University. One month later, their mother also came to Qingdao. Obviously, the younger sisters were enjoying their holiday very much. They went to the beach every day, played billiards and tennis, practiced roller skating, and watched DVDs. This kind of leisure life must be envied by Chinese students who have to deal with their schoolwork or are forced by their parents to take holiday courses. When I asked if Russian parents would force their children to learn music or art or anything else the children didn’t like, the mother said she wouldn’t. She’d rather let the children choose what they like. The second daughter, Sophia, i s a member of her school ’s dance group and represented the national team, winning the 2007 championship. Ru s s i a n S ch o o l s d o n’ t r a n k the students according to their scores, but their comprehensive performances like tests, homework, activities, etc. In China, students are given points, whereas in Russia, students are given grades. Grade

5 is the top grade. Most students attain a grade of 4. So in other words, students are assessed for not only their academic abilities in tests, but also their all-round abilities. Svetlana agreed that education is the right way for girls to have a better life. But she joked about her mother’s good luck. Her mother mar ried “the best man in the world” at the age of 18. So in her opinion education is not the only important thing in life. Girls must think about setting up their happy families as well. - Ruby Sol

当得知斯威特兰娜的两个妹妹独自来到中国旅行时，我十分佩服他们。

14岁的索菲亚和11岁的泰莎从她们的家乡——俄罗斯的伯力城坐飞机到哈尔滨，然后转机到青岛来拜访她们的长姐斯威特兰娜。斯维特兰娜是中国海洋大学的一名工商管理专业的研究生。一个月之后，她们的妈妈也来到了青岛。

显然，这两个小女孩在中国度过了愉快的假期。她们每天都去海边，打台球，打网球，练习滑旱冰，看DVD。这么悠闲自在的时光肯定被中国学生所羡慕吧：她们要么在家拼命写作业，要么

被家长们逼迫去参加假期班。

当我问到是否俄国的家长们会逼迫孩子去学习音乐、艺术或任何孩子们不喜欢的课程时，斯威特兰娜的妈妈坦言她不会。她更愿意孩子们选择她们自己喜欢的。二女儿索菲娅是她所在学校的舞蹈队队员，曾经代表国家队赢得了2007年的冠军。

俄罗斯的学校不会以学生的分数论高低，而是通过学生们的的综合素质，比如测试、作业以及课外活动等来测评。在中国，老师给学生们打分，在俄罗斯，老师评定学生的级别。5分为优秀，大部分学生得4分。也就是说，俄罗斯的教育不仅按照测试中的学术水平来评价学生，同样看重全面素质。

斯威特兰娜同意教育是女孩子获得更好生活的途径，但是她开玩笑说她妈妈更幸运。她妈妈在18岁的时候嫁给了“世界上最好的男人”。所以在她看来，教育不是生活中唯一重要的事情。女孩们一定认为，建立一个幸福的家庭也十分重要。- 露比•赛尔

From a child’s perspective, growing up is what they’re supposed to do. It’s a kid’s job.

Even as an adult you watch your child or someone else’s with the expectation that they’ll “grow up” and hopefully be normal. Not normal in the boring sense but normal in the healthy and balanced sense.

Damian likes to think he grew up normally. He spent his whole childhood in Australia with his brothers, sisters and parents. He went to school with kids just like himself. They all sounded the same and believed that Aussie-Rules (Australia Rules Football) was worth arguing over. Although at the time he didn’t realize it, he and his friends all shared many deep cultural values that made them aware of what was acceptable behaviour.

Raul also feels he grew up normally. He was born in Wewak, Papua New Guinea and like Damian, also has siblings and parents. His parents were Finnish immigrants to Australia. The family spoke Finnish at home, English at school and Pidgin English with their neighbours. As a child he lived in Papua New Guinea, Australia and India and the people he spent time with were from many countries and cultures. They shared deep values and experiences that made all of them aware of what was acceptable behaviour. Instead of arguing about Aussie-Rules, they quickly found common interests with kids from around the world to argue about.

It turns out that Damian grew up inside one culture (mono-cultural) and Raul grew up across many cultures (multi-cultural). When a person spends a significant part of their developmental years outside their passport country, this influences their lives and these people are known as a Third Culture Kids (TCK’s). TCK’s have a great ability to learn quickly about other cul tures, understand both sides of a conflict, speak multiple languages and handle the unknown with relative confidence.

TCK’s also share some challenges. For many, identifying where home is can be difficult, and deciding which country to support at the Olympics becomes a chore. Members of cross-cultural communities move often, so children have new friends arriving and old ones leaving seemingly all the time. TCK’s may feel powerless in many decisions in their life because often their lives are ultimately controlled by their parent’s employer.

Of course not all TCK’s fit these descriptions, but as a group, they tend to share these traits.

The advantages TCK’s have because of their life experiences are great tools for them to use throughout their lives. However, if not well supported through the challenges of the TCK experience, in adulthood they can make poor decisions based on behaviours formed in childhood. Relationships are very important for us all, and TCK’s are great at building them; however, because throughout childhood they have learned to say goodbye to their friends, sometimes every two years, they have developed the idea that relationships start and then end. Unfortunately many TCK’s take this into their adult life and this can cut relationships unnecessarily short, be detrimental for long-term employment and sometimes be disastrous for marriage because a learned tendency to move and or change relationships after a few years takes over.

When I was in 7th grade my friend left and I cried a lot. Now when my friends leave, I miss them but I don’t cry. I plan on seeing them again.~QMIS 12th grader Jenny (Korea)

As adults we understand that a nurturing environment helps children develop, and we hope to provide them with balanced examples of what healthy adults look like. Sometimes adults do well in this, and other times they fail. TCK’s, like all children, soak up their surrounding world and make it a piece of themselves.

As parents, extended family members, schoolteachers and family friends of children, we need to think through our actions and question what we are teaching the children around us. Maybe we should try answering the following questions: Do we show respect for our host culture (China) or do we mock it? Do we show respect towards other adults employed to perform “non-skilled” tasks or do we ignore them? Do we use a position of power to help others or do we use it to get our own way?

I’ve seen many foreigners (across China) mock things in the host culture they don’t understand. It seems to be a defensive response that doesn’t improve the situation but makes themselves feel better. ~QMIS English teacher Evan (USA)

Beyond being cliché, the action of a person will always say more than the words they use. This is even more so when a child is learning by watching an adult.

Damian has three young children all born in China. Raul has three teenage children who have lived in China for most of their lives. For their respective families they both want to make sure that their children have role models in their lives who have a balanced understanding of the world, who don’t believe they are more important than others and who seek to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Wanting to make healthy decisions for a child’s life is normal. Growing up in different countries is normal and with great benefits. 从孩子的角度，成长就是他们要做的事，即使作为一个成人，你看着你的或者别人的孩子长大，也总期望他们能“正常”地成长。“正常”成长指的是健康和平衡的意思，而非其它别的意思。

Damian 认为自己是“正常”成长的。他的童年是在澳大利亚与父母和兄弟姐妹度过的。他跟其他孩子一样去学校上学，同学之间没什么差别，并且都对讨论澳大利亚式足球乐此不疲。虽然在那时他还没有意识到，他和他的朋友们因为拥有共同的文化价值观使得他们知道哪些是合理的行为，哪些不是。

Raul也认为他是正常成长的。他出生在巴布亚新几内亚的威瓦克，并且跟Damian一样，有父母和兄弟姐妹。他的父母是澳大利亚的芬兰移民。在家里，他们说芬兰语，在学校说英语，而跟邻居，他们则讲洋泾浜英语。在孩童时期，他就曾经在巴布亚新几内亚、澳大利亚、印度三个国家生活过。与不同国籍、不同文化的人们打过交道。他们同样分享深刻的价值观和人生经历，这使得他们有相同的是非判断标准。只是他们谈论的不是澳大利亚式足球，而是同来自不同国家的孩子们讨论他们共同感兴趣的话题。

由上述可见，Damian在单一文化中成长，而Raul在多元文化中长大。在成长的关键几年里，如果一个小孩在外国长大，那么这肯定会影响到他的生活。这些小孩被叫做“第三文化儿童”。他们学习其它文化的速度很快，能全面地理解冲突，讲好几种语言，并且能够相对自信地面对未知领域和挑战。

第三文化儿童也面临一些挑战：他们中很多很难知道哪个国家是祖国，在奥运会中支持哪个国家也成为一个难题。在跨文化社区中，人们流动性大，所以对于孩子们来讲，新朋友到来，旧友离开，这是再平常不过了。他们在生活中做决定时有时感到无可奈何，因为很多时候生活是父母的雇主所左右的。

当然，不是所有的“第三文化儿童”都是上述情况，但是作为一个群体，他们具有以上的特点。

第三文化儿童的优势在于，他们可以把生活经历带给他们的经验运用在以后的生活中，但是如果儿时面临挑战却没有得到及时的支持的话，他们长大后会受儿时养成的行为的影响，无法做出正确的决定。对于我们每个人来讲，人际关系是很重要的。第三文化儿童更擅长与别人建立良好的人际关系。但是因为整个童年他们都得跟老朋友说再见，有时隔两年就要经历一次，结束一段旧的人际关系，开始一段新的人际关系。然而，很多第三文化儿童将此习惯带入成年之后的生活，这使他们与别人只能保持短期的人际关系，不适于长期的雇佣关系，有些时候会对婚姻造成灾难性的影响，因为他们已经习惯于几年后的迁移和改变。

作为成人，我们知道一个良好的教育环境有利于孩子成长，我们希望给他们树立健康、正常的成人榜样。有时候，大人在这一点上做的不错，而有时候，他们做的不够好。第三文化儿童，跟所有的孩子一样，从周围环境中吸取营养，并且将其化为自己的生活阅历。

作为父母，大家庭的成员，学校老师和孩子们的朋友，我们需要反思我们的行为，思考我们在教周围的孩子们什么。可能我们得想想以下的几个问题：

我们有没有尊重东道国的文化（中国）还是我们对其嗤之以鼻？我们有没有尊重其他做体力活儿的人？我们是运用权力帮助别人还是我们拿它为自己开路？

I truly believe that this is one of the most frequent expressions coming from courageous foreigners who have decided to learn this strange but fascinating language. My first introduction to the language was a few weeks prior to my first visit to China. I started to learn Chinese at a European foreign language school, with a non-Chinese professor. I was impressed and shocked at the same time. Learning the language seemed like a very difficult, almost impossible mission.

I had never heard about the “tones” and I could not understand the real function of Chinese characters.

In my previous experiences abroad, I had run into Chinese people and sometimes, during our discussions about languages we used to speak, I had asked them to write my name into their language. Surprisingly, the feedback I received was always delayed and negative.

“We can not write your exact name, but maybe a closer one.” To me that sounded very strange and completely unclear. “Was it so hard to convert letters into characters?!” Obviously the concept of my understanding the language was wrong.

It took me a while to understand (to feel) the real meaning, functions and importance of the Chinese characters and tones. And that happened only after I had started studying Chinese at the Qingdao International Language School.

I have been having one-to-one lessons, a few hours per week for few months now. The methodology used in the school seems interesting and fruitful . The lectures are mainly organized in three sections; vocabulary, reading-conversation and grammar. Many foreigners usually choose to learn only the “Pin Yin” and not the “Han Zi”, as the latest would require an enormous effort. Those who choose the second option already know that the course would be tremendously difficult and progress very slow.

What seems very impressive at the language school in Qingdao is the constant effort spent by your

professor in teaching the language. Willingness to teach and patience are two valuable qualities I have noted and appreciated in my Chinese language professor.

Nevertheless, studying Chinese requires a lot of independent study, in addition to the language lectures. Memorizing new words and practicing new characters is essential.

We, foreigners who study Chinese, are very much aware of the difficult path we are going through. Why would we study Chinese? – Different reasons. Personally, I strongly believe that language helps you understand a nation; its people and lifestyle. It helps you understand the way they think and behave. I think that learning Chinese will help me know China and its people; therefore helping me as an expat in China to work and live in harmony.

学习汉语不容易

“学习汉语，真不容易！”我相信很多有勇气学习汉语这门奇怪又有意思的语言的外国人经常会说出这句话。在我第一次来中国的几星期前，我开始接触汉语。我当时刚开始在一个欧洲外语学校学习汉语。老师不是中国人。我对汉语既印象深刻，又感到惊讶：学习汉语似乎是一项十分困难，几乎不可能的事。

我从没听说过汉语的“声调”并且我不能理解汉字的功能。

在我先前的出国经历里，我有时候遇见过中国人，在我们讨论自己所说的语言时，我让他们用汉语把我的名字写出来，但是令我惊讶的是，他们总是迟疑、不肯定地回答我：“我们不能准确地用汉语写你的名字，但是可能比较接近。”对我来说，那听起来十分奇怪，并且不那么清晰。“把字母转换成汉字就那么难吗？”显然，我

对汉语的理解是错误的。

我花了些时间去弄懂汉字和音调的真实含义、功能和重要性。而这些都是我在青岛国际语言学校学习汉语之后所取得的成绩。

我们是一对一课程。每周几个小时的课，现在已经上了几个月了。学校的教学方法十分有意思并且颇有成效。课程分为三部分：词汇，阅读及会话和语法。很多外国人只选择学习拼音，但不学汉字。因为后者学起来要费很多劲儿。那些选择学习汉字的人都事先知道课程会相当难，并且过程漫长。

青岛国际学校令我印象最深刻的是老师孜孜不倦的教学态度。我的汉语老师乐于施教并且富有耐心，我在学习中注意到了这些并且十分感激我的汉语老师能具有这样珍贵的品质。

然而，除了课程，学习汉语还需要很多的自我学习。记生词和练习使用新汉字是最基本的。

我们，作为学习汉语的外国人，很清楚汉语学习之路艰难而漫长。为什么想学习汉语呢？因为很多的不同原因。以我个人而言，我相信，学习语言可以了解一个国家，它的人民以及人们的生活方式。语言学习帮助你理解他们的思考和行为方式。我认为汉语学习将帮助我了解中国和中国人。然后我可以快乐地在中国工作和生活。

LEARNING “CHINESE” IS NOT EASY!

I am more impressed by someone who can give me 8 constructive and effective hours rather than 50 non-productive ones. In order to do this, you need to have people under you who have the ability and the sense of authority to make decisions.

Ev e n t h o u g h t h e InterContinental Qingdao Hotel has been in business

for over a year since the Olympics in 2008, I must admit I had never set foot inside the place prior to this interview. I was impressed by the interior design and the open concept of the front lobby as I waltzed in to meet up with my MINS associates. Together, we waited to be greeted and escorted to the VIP wing by the Director of Marketing Communications. Shortly after that we were greeted by Arno Nicolussi-Moretto, the hotel's General Manager. I found him to be a tall, clean-cut man without a single wrinkle in his suit. Yet despite his strong formal appearance, he was actually very easy going and approachable. It's hard for me to put into words exactly what my first impression of him was, but I can definitely say this: He came across as the kind of boss that everyone wishes to have.

Arno has been in the hotel business for 24 years, starting from his apprent iceship through hotel management school . He then worked his way up, taking various courses within the organization via Hilton hotels and InterContinental. He worked for seven years in the Middle East, including the famous Intercontinental in Dubai. He has spent the last eight years in China.

So it comes as no surprise that he was chosen for the task of getting the InterContinental Hotel in Qingdao up and running on the eve of the 2008 Olympic Games. When Arno first came to Qingdao, the hotel was literally a construction site. Yet somehow, Arno and his team were able to get the hotel in tip-top shape. From what I gathered, Arno can give credit to not only his experience, but also to his management style. I asked him to comment on his style, and he had this to say

I think I'm very outgoing, and I'm very fast in my approach to people. I also try very hard to include my team as soon as possible and I build on my team. The reason is because I strongly believe that as a General Manager, you can't run everything on your own. You have to have talented people working with you. Take Shally for example (the Director of Marketing Communications), I've known her for two and a half years. I'm very happy she is one of our stars. I think it's crucial to find the right people, give them the right training, and more importantly, to give them trust and commitment of quality, and room to grow.

I was also curious as to how he learned to cope with cultural differences. One would like to think that in an ideal world, there's a universal standard of management. However, in the real world, this is not the case. Arno acquired a lot experience in the international circuit. I asked him to share his thoughts on how he dealt with the challenges of working within a different cultural system.

If you wish to enter the hotel business, travel to different nations and work together with different people, you must be ready. You must be very open-minded. With me, wherever I go or wherever I stand, I always look at the situation- how the people are, and how can I set myself in. As an International manager, you need to be able to adjust to the local system. With InterContinental, we have a very clear strategy that makes it quite easy. We have our company commitments, in which we say "everything is people oriented. "Everything goes into people, goes into the culture. We try to see what we can do with the people, not just in China, but everywhere. We see how we can work better together.

"

"From Arno, I also came to learn how InterContinental dealt with the challenges of human resources. Before I came to China, I had worked in a variety of different jobs, including the hotel and catering business. One thing that I noticed was the large amount of employee turnover. It was hard for these places to keep good staff, or even mediocre staff. I wanted to know what incentives InterContinental gave to its employees to make them want to stay with the company. InterContinental is the biggest hotel operator in the world, and in China. The company believes in keeping talented people on their workforce. What is important for keeping talent is prosperity, future, and to see how one can grow within the

organization. The company gives people the opportunities to grow and gives them training. In order to keep desired staff members, they are willing to pay them what is deserved. Therefore, money incentives also play a big part. The competition is growing, so they need the best people working for them. It is more important having the right people on the team.

Of course, businesses such as these have o ther cha l l enges, s u ch a s c r i s i s m a n a g e m e n t . InterContinental Hotels Group has 4200 partners working around the wor ld . The company has dealt with various problems, such as SARS, H1N1, and now the current economic crisis. Arno believes a company can survive by communication. Strangely enough, he believes that a crisis will show the strength of an international establishment. InterContinental has a key system that can be swi tched over when needed . Each department has a random action plan. Even when a business is under pressure, i t needs to continue, even under non-crisis related pressure. The hotel is even well 'equipped' to alter its settings. During the Olympics, it had to house everyone involved in the Olympic organisation: the officials, the athletes, the press, the coaches, the media personnel, e t c . T hey had to make su r e that the setting was not that of InterContinental's, but rather that of the Olympics. At that time, the hotel was at 100% occupancy, so the pressure was fierce. However, their staff was knowledgeable and well trained to deal with the transition, as well as the transition during the post-Olympics.

On the topic of handling situations under pressure, I asked Arno if he would elaborate on how he and his team dealt with the intense pressure of getting the hotel up and ready for the Olympics, as they were to be the official Olympic village in Qingdao:

Fantastic and Impressive indeed! The more I spoke with Arno, the more I came to admire him, his life, his abilities, and his calm reserve. Yet I couldn't help but wonder whether having a job like this was detrimental to his private life. A hotel never closes its doors. A hotel manager must then not have his or her doors closed either. However, Arno revealed to me something I found to be both surprising and

That was a b i g cha l l eng e . Everything that was and still is linked to the Olympics is as-per-rules and regulated by the International Olympic Committee. To have a chance such as this is really a one-off chance, so you must be fully committed. As a hotel operator, it is slightly different, but just as strict-with the purchasing, with the medical checks, and all the specifications for the games. For example, we had to make sure that we didn't have a certain kind of food for fear it might affect the results of the games. We had to be part of the Olympic team. We had to attend meetings in Beijing. We were trained. We had to prepare all the menus and everything else. It was like we had to be a little pharmacy. We had to know every single detail about every single item-where it came from, how old it was, how many grams it had and who the supplier was -every single thing. We also had to cater to 60 plus different nations, from any religion and any taste. It was a very tense and tiring time for our chefs. Pre-preparation booklets were like little bibles. We had to follow them strictly. And everyday was a different meal. The IOC also had to check and recheck everything. A meal would not be passed out if the IOC didn't approve it. We had inspectors over our shoulders every step of the way. It was a one-off experience for everyone, but they handled themselves very well and it was a great experience for everyone to grow and to learn. There was too much at risk, and they knew this, so they put in their full 150% efforts, and the result was fantastic.

I believe that life, both business and personal, should be balanced. You cannot have success in one if the other is affected. I'm not impressed with people who tell me that they are working 50 hours a week. To me, that just shows me a lack of ability to use one's time effectively. If you work so many hours ineffectively, it's not only a waste of valuable company time, but also a waste of your personal time. I am more impressed by someone who can give me 8 constructive and effective hours rather than 50 non- productive ones. In order to do this, you need to have people under you who have the ability and the sense of authority to make decisions. If you are the one who has to decide on every single thing, then you cannot do this. You must have a team that is well trained and trustworthy to make decisions on their own. They can then pass this onto their staffs, thus continuing the cycle. If you cannot trust the people on your team, the result will only be disastrous not only on the business, but also your personal time.

始了解洲际酒店面对人力资源挑

战时的战略和方法。在来中国之

前，我曾做过不同的工作。我注意

到，在酒店行业中，有大量人员离

职的现象。留住员工很难，留住好

员工更难。我想知道，为了留住员

工，洲际酒店给了员工哪些方面的

驱动力。作为全球及中国最大的酒

店运营商，洲际酒店坚持“人才战

略”留住人才。重要一点就是让他

们有个好的未来，并在公司中有发

展提升的空间。洲际酒店给员工提

供发展机会并对他们进行培训。为

下的经济危机。尼柯乐士先生认

为，一个公司可以通过交流求生

存，危机也可以促进酒店的潜在

经营能力的发挥。洲际酒店集团

有一个急需应急系统，一旦危机

出现就可以使用，每个部门还有

一个随机行动规划。无论生意是

面临危机的压力还是非危机的压

力，都能保证其继续下去。洲际

酒店甚至随时准备调整它的应对

计划。在奥运期间，洲际酒店需

要为所有相关人员提供食宿：官

员，运动员，新闻记者，教练，

还有媒体人员。他们必须保证应

对计划不仅仅从洲际酒店出发，

而从奥运会全局出发。在奥运期

间，酒店天天客满，所以也面临

重压。但是员工们素质良好，训

练得当，很好地度过了奥运会和

奥运会之后的过渡时期。

谈及如何在压力下应对各种情

况，我问尼柯乐士先生是否可以

详细讲讲，在酒店被指定为青岛

奥运村的时刻，他和他的团队怎

样面对那些紧张的压力去把洲际

打造成国际酒店并做好为奥运服

务的准备的：

“那是个极大的挑战。当时，现在也是一切与国际奥委会的标准相符。每一步都由国际奥委会审核和监督。面对眼前这个不可多得的机遇，我们必须全力以赴。对于酒店经营商来讲，准备奥运是有点不同。但也就是严格对待食品购买，严格药品检验，严格遵守奥运会的各种规格。举例来讲，我们必须保证每一种食品都不会影响到比赛。我们把自己当做奥运工作组的一部分：去北京参加会议，接受培训，准备所有的菜谱及其它东西，有时候我们好像有点儿像药剂师，每一种食品的每个细节我们都得了如指掌：从哪里来的，多长时间了，重量，及供应商。——事无巨细。此外，我们要为来自60个国家的人们备餐，信仰不同，口味也不同。对于我们的厨师来讲，那真是一段极具考验的时光，我们要严格按照前期准备的菜谱备餐，它们在我们心中的重要性绝不亚于《圣经》。除了每天准备不同的食品外，各种食品都要经过奥帆委的审查，没有他们的同意，任何一道菜都不会上餐桌。每一步我们都有上一级的监督人员监督和指导。对每个人

来讲，这是一次不可多得的机会。但他们的确做得很出色，每个人都在其中得到了成长和学习。我们深知工作中存在着很多风险，每个人都付出了150%的努力，最终取得了很好的成果。

”采访的确很精彩，令人难忘。

我与尼柯乐士谈得越多，就对他

越发敬重：从生活到工作能力，

还有他难得的沉静。但我同时也

不由地想知道，这样的工作是否

对他的私人生活造成一定影响？

酒店可是从来不打烊的，也就意

味着酒店经理必须随时准备工

作。然而，尼柯乐士透露了一些

既新奇又实用的道理，让我觉得

对自己以后的生活也多有裨益。

“我认为无论是工作还是个

人生活，都应保持平衡。一方受影响，另一方面也难以成功。我并不赞赏那些告诉我一周工作50个小时的人。对我来讲，那仅仅意味着一个人没有很好地利用自己的时间而已。如果每天用时没有效率，不仅是对宝贵工作时间的浪费，也是对个人生活时光的浪费。我更赞赏那些每天有效率地工作8小时的人，而不是一周50个小时的蹉跎岁月者。要有效地工作，你的下属必须既有能力又有决断力。如果你是那种事事亲历亲为的人，难以节省时间。你必须有一支训练有素、值得信赖的团队。相信你的团队，相信你的员工，他们会发挥更大的作用，为企业创造更多的财

Tian Bei Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic was founded in 1991 and was the first private aesthetic and plastic surgery clinic in Qingdao and Shandong with a fully qualified plastic surgeon specialist. 1.What inspired you to start this profession?

All humankind shares a love for beauty, and to create beauty makes people feel happy and delightful. During my experience of doing surgery, some patients were left with scars after enduring neck surgery, which greatly affected their appearance. It was a time when hospita ls had a lack of reconstructive surgery technologies, and they paid less attention on medical cosmetology. They only focused on curing diseases and keeping people alive. As a surgeon with a love for beauty, I was

inspired. I thought to myself, "Why not help patients who have endured scaring from surgery regain their beauty, their self-confidence?" So, I began studying the ways of cosmetic surgery.

2 . W hat i s your market ing strategy?

Professionalism and Honesty --- both of these things are crucial to be a person and a doctor. I stand in a circle of reconstructive cosmetology by the concept of honesty and professional scientific medical ethics

3. What do your clients feel when they come to your beauty clinic?

They are embraced by the warm, considerate reception ser vice a n d s e r ve d by p r o f e s s i o n a l consultants. We create a clean, elegant atmosphere and our staff are serious and responsible --- that’s why the customers give their credit to our reconstructive cosmetology. Considerate careful inspection and service will always accompany our customers during the surgery days, helping them to spend their time smoothly. 4. W hat ’s your specia l ized s e r v i c e a n d w h a t a r e t h e differences between you and your competitors?

Many cosmetology cl ients say surgeries done by Director Tian are a very fantastic experience! One overseas Chinese said, “After several disappointing surgeries conducted by American and Japanese doctors, I finally was fixed by Miss Tian --- which made me realize how fortunate I could have been if I had come here first!”

We are always innovating; we make particular plans for each customer. With millions of successful cases and nearly twenty years clinical exper ience, we offer Chinese people internationalized advanced service with reference to European a n d A m e r i c a n t e ch n o l o g i e s a n d a c c o r d i n g t o t h e f a c i a l characteristics of Eastern people. 5. How can you survive in such severe competition?

For me, a good reconstructive surgeon should not only master the technology, but should also have excellent skills and high morality. In order to create individual beauty and naturalness for different clients, the surgeons should pay much attention to the communication with their customers, in order to a full understanding of customers’ situations and needs. They should

be both reconstructive experts and also aesthetic experts. Cosmetic surgery is regarded as the carving art of the human body; therefore the reconstructive surgeon should not only have great surgical skill and much clinical experience, but should also constantly improve their ideas. On the one hand, we should study advanced international technologies; on the other hand, we are supposed to use advanced in ter nat iona l equ ipment . We are a lways f i r mly attached to international high-standard business modes. Believing in “high morality and excellent skills” and putting high morality in the forefront, we are the leading party in the reconstructive cosmetology circle.

6. What interests you?

Anything related to beauty: music, architecture, painting, literature, scenic views and delicious foods.

7. Who is your favorite historical figure?

Hua Mulan. As a girl, she joined the army instead of her father and prepared herself for the motherland, yet at the same time she retained the elegance of a female --- she was an ancient beauty with a strong will, full of passion and brave enough to do what she wanted. Zong Lin is an independent entrepreneur operating in Qingdao. She has started

he r own women ' s a cce s so r y business called Linsu Youshang. She offers accessories for women at competitive prices. Our regular contributor Sophie Liu took time to get the scoop on Zong Lin's new private business.

SL: How did “Linsu Youshang” come into being?

ZL: It was a coincidence. At first, wearing accessories was just my hobby, so I picked some pieces from a friend in Shanghai. After returning to Qingdao, a lot of friends entrusted me to purchase the accessories for them, as they had also fallen in love with the pieces after seeing me wear them. Gradually, more and more friends came to me and some of them advised me to start an accessory business. My product line is designed for office ladies: low-profile and yet elegant. Besides, the prices for these accessories are staggering in flagship boutiques,

like the Junefield department stores in Beijing, Henglong Plaza in Shanghai, etc. The same items are sold at prices of 4-10 folds mainly because of import taxes. Many women cannot afford them. What I did was reduce the price so I could share these beautiful things with more women.

SL: You said you encountered problems at the beginning. How did you overcome them?

ZL: Fortunately, we adjusted the direction in time and made a sales breakthrough after doing a lot of marketing research to help us think from the consumers’ point of view. I have been serving as a professional image adviser for a while, so I have some personal perceptions on cosmetics and accessory matching. I thought, "Why not apply these “resources” to my accessory business? It could increase the value of the product, and it would also bring beauty to more women.” As a downright go-getter, Zong Lin began to provide individualized services to help her customers in style matching, and organized various activities like Women’s Reading Club, Afternoon Tea Salon, and Baby Summer Photo Show. Through these programs, she chatted with women who pursue fashion to discover beauty and hand it around. Today, “Linsu Youshang” has spread its name, and has attracted a larger number of women that wish to get their personalized fashion-matching scheme.

KEEPING MUSIC ALIVE

There is one great pleasure on earth that connects people from all over the world，

one awesome form of art that brings so many different people together to enjoy a good time. This one thing can give you the best hours of your life. It can make you incredibly happy or sad. But it even can make you fall deeply in love

while singing and dancing to it. MUSIC is something so wonderful and enchanting that it can connect children, lovers and even nations. Praise be to those who like to share their love and passion for music with us. I had the fortunate chance to meet two talented spokesmen for music in Qingdao. Two absolutely special people, celebrated in Jazz, Gospel and Blues. They were kind enough to share some information with me about their connection to music and about their experiences.

Vocalist Ptah Brown loves to guide people. She loves to teach music to both rookies and laymen by means of her shows and workshops. But teaching is not her main aim in

Qingdao. She is here because she wants to help a good friend. She has the impression that a lot of people, especially in China, cannot truly enjoy Jazz Music because they do not know enough about it. Although I could see that she really likes China. Her friend is trying to establish an amazing Jazz Bar, House and Hostel, THE BEACH HOUSE, and he needs true Jazz musicians. Only together can they inspire the audience to feel the rhythms. “You always should learn from an expert, who knows what he or she is talking about. (Ptah Brown).

While I was talking to her, i t appeared that she had so much


awareness and understanding for humans and music, even though she is only 25 years young. She began performing at the age of four, and her centre has always been music. Dedicating her life to God and Mother Earth, she realized at an early age that she had a purpose in life: To keep music alive. Her enormous love for Jazz, Blues and religious Gospel is reflected in her vocals. She can give you hope, trust and energy with her enlightening voice. She wants to tell stories through her shows

and she is actually

success fu l ever y time. It touches your heart

when she sings and makes your soul take flight. It is like you could absorb a little bit of her endless strength. She definitely brought a piece of the Big Apple’s flavour and spirit to Qingdao. Go out and experience it yourself and let your senses get bewitched every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Beach House.

John W. Cole, the other new famous musician in town, is a member of Ptah’s Band. Seeing them together on stage is like a gift. He plays the Saxophone and the Piano so harmoniously to her

voice that you get totally impressed by their interplay. They drive you go back to the very beginning, to the roots and the origins of Black Music. This is an experience you can only gain in Qingdao! Let their vibrations rock your body!

It has come to our attention that Ptah Brown has fallen ill and has gone to Beijing, so unfortunately she cannot perform at the Beach House with her band. 幸在青岛邂逅了两位音乐人。他俩

很特别，主要演奏爵士乐，黑人福

音音乐以及布鲁斯。他们乐意与我

分享他们和音乐的故事，以及他们

个人的经历。

好为人师的歌手 Ptah Brown

Ptah Brown喜欢通过演出或者讲习班教授别人音乐。但是教学并不是她待在青岛的主要目的。她留在这里，是为了帮一个好友的忙，虽然我能够看出她十分喜欢中国。她觉得很多中国人对爵士乐知之不多，不能真正地享受其魅力。她的好友正在筹建一个十分棒的集酒吧、旅馆和酒店于一体的爵士休闲场所——大海驿客栈。他十分需要地道的爵士演奏家。只有这样才能使听众真正感受到音乐的震撼力。Ptah Brown 认为“你应该多向真正的音乐家学习，他们了解这一行。”

在同她交谈中，我感觉她虽

然只有25岁，却对人生和音乐有

着深刻的感悟。她4岁开始登台演

出，音乐在她的生活中一直占有着

很重要的位置。怀着对上帝和大

地母亲的眷恋，她很早就意识到

生活的意义在于：让音乐声声不

息。她对爵士，布鲁斯以及福音音

乐的热爱，无一不体现在其天籁之

音中。她用富有感染力的歌声给人

以希望、信心和力量，她想用演唱

来向人们讲述故事，每次都如愿以

偿，大获成功。她的歌声，动人心

弦，神魂荡漾，似乎能从其歌声中

感受到不竭的力量。的确，她把

纽约的气息和精神带到了青岛。

International Lions Club is a non-political, non-religious international charity organization. Its mission is to "serve society and bless mankind.” It is one of the largest charity organizations in the world, was established in 1917 and has 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries.

Approved by the State Council, Chinese Lions Association was established in 2005. It was in accordance with the Harmonious S o c i e t y C o n s t r u c t i o n a n d international humanitarianism. It is a national non-governmental charity organization formally registered according to Chinese laws and regulations.

Q i n g d a o L i o n s C l u b w a s established in June 2006. Embraced by the warm social atmosphere i n Q i n g d a o, m e m b e r s h a ve developed from more than twenty at the beginning, to hundreds today. Voluntarily, our members offered assistance to poor cataracts patients to regain sight, donated money to poor families and needy students from migrant worker families. Moreover, we invited experts to guide college students on how to choose a job and how to establish their own businesses.

As we reported in MINS 7 (p.16), the Qingdao Expat C h a r i t y C o m m i t t e e i s

supporting Lv Wenhua, an 8-year-old girl attending Laixi Lijia Primary School who has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Her medical treatment at Qingdao hospital costs 5000RMB/month, price her poor family cannot afford.

Many people acted immediately and donated extra amounts or organized more donation activities.

One example is a Chinese lady called An Fu Lan who insisted on giving 5000RMB to the girl in person, and she went to visit her and hand over the cash in the last week of August.

After reading our ar t ic le, the Cassani Cafe & Bar owner and manager were so moved, they immediately planned a Charity evening on Wednesday 16th Sept, with free flowing Italian buffet and drinks for 128RMB/person.

慈善总会对吕文华的资助做过相关报道。8岁的女孩吕文华就读于莱西立嘉小学，被查出患有骨癌。她

在青岛市区的医院治疗费用高达5000元每月，这对其家庭来讲是个天文数字。

看到报道后，许多人很快伸出援手，捐出自己的积蓄，或者协助组织慈善活动。

其中一个例子是一位叫安扶兰的女士，坚持要以个人名义给吕文华捐献5000元，她在八月底的前一个星期，亲自前去看望那个女孩，并且把钱交给了她。

在读了我们的报道之后，卡萨尼咖啡&酒吧的老板和经理深受触动，他们即刻策划在9月16日周三晚上举行慈善自助餐，包括酒水，每位128元。

In the past years a number of Chinese business people h a v e g o n e a b r o a d t o

develop themselves. In the early stages they enjoyed a good time starting businesses and making profits. Unfortunately the good times didn't last long and they ran into various difficulties. A series of bad things happened. For example, shoes made in China were destroyed by fire in Spain. In Russia , pol ice sealed Chinese storehouses and products. In other places, sanct ions were repeated ly imposed on Chinese products for sale, etc.

Ignoring local commercia l standards, customs and rules accounted for some of the reasons, but above all, I think, Chinese merchants appeared too competitive by taking up the whole chain from production to sale in their business operations. They failed to include local merchants in the marketing and manufacturing chains. This caused a big stir in the peace of competition and resulted in a high rate of unemployment in the loca l f ac tor i e s and companies.

These ter rible results have finally awakened the Chinese people’s recognition of the cu l tura l d i f ferences. They realized that going abroad was one thing and staying abroad wa s a n o t h e r t h i n g. S o m e overseas Chinese have become tired of living in a foreign land and have chosen to return to their homeland while others who have remained abroad tend to live in the Chinese circles of business, associates and friends.

Eventually, a new awareness developed in a new generation

of overseas Chinese (known as a second generat ion of overseas Chinese). They have distinguished themselves by adap t ing the i r m inds and skills and have developed a c ross -cu l ture approach to marketing. While changing the old style of competition, they try to enter the local society and establish themselves by letting a percentage of their c o m p a n y ’s p r o f i t s g o t o charity. Some seek the Chinese g ove r nmen t ’s s uppo r t by combin ing the i r bus ine s s d e v e l o p m e n t w i t h t h e government’s international cooperat ive project . Being innovative, others adopt new cultural ideas by occupying only part of the market chain and adapt to the local marketing trends and customs. So how can the smart Chinese merchants manage to survive? I think an understanding of the local culture helps them to make it. That is, to be democratic and to share, is very critical. Therefore the understanding of local cultures and marketing practices are the keys to success in a foreign market. - David Chang

业率。

这些严重的后果最终使中

国人警觉到文化差异的重要

性。人们意识到去国外是一回

事，在国外生存则是另一回

事。一些海外华人对在海外生

活已开始感到厌烦，选择回乡

发展。而另一些仍旅居海外的

中国人则倾向于在中国人的生

意和社交圈中生活。

最终，海外华人的年轻一

代开始觉醒了（海外华人的第

二代），与前辈们不同，他们

调整了自己的观念和技巧，有

着适于营销的多元文化理念。

在转变旧竞争方式的过程中，

他们试着融入当地的社会并将

公司盈利的一部分用于慈善活

动。部分商人获得中国政府支

持，将自身的生意发展同政府

的国际合作项目结合起来。其

他一些具有创新思维的人则吸

收了新的文化理念，只占有部

分市场，融入了当地的市场潮

流和文化。

Water Kind:Co lo r needs a g ood base to be displayed

properly; the base of the water kind is divided into the following categories:

1. Glass “Boli”: The texture is as bright and clear as glass. It also

appears as hard as glass. If you take a piece of Glass type Feicui to the page of a book, you will be able to read the words underneath. (pics 25, 26)

2. Ice “Bing”: This jade is clear but with a fine mist inside, like

that of a piece of ice. It does not have the clarity or brilliance of Glass jade. If you take a piece of Ice jade to the page of a book, you wil l be able to see words underneath but not clear enough to distinguish them. (pics 27, 28)

3. Glutinous rice “Nuo hua”: This is transparent and yet opaque, it gives

a feeling of dense sticky rice cakes or pulled fluffy cotton. This white stuff does not make up more than 20% of the stone composition. (pics 29, 30)

4. Moss-in-Snow “Bai di Qing”: This jade has green floating on a

white surface like green clouds on a white sky, or like green moss strewn on powdery white snow. (pics 31, 32)

5. Cyanine “Hua qing”: This jade is blue-green: the base

color appears green but it is not distributed evenly. The texture is slightly coarse, and some Cyanine jade are completely opaque while others are completely transparent. (pics 33, 34)

6. Lotus root starch “Ou fen”: This jade appears luminous but

it is actually rather dark, it appears transparent but it is rather opaque. It looks like a cloudy murky mess of 80% lotus root powder frozen in 20% water. (pics 35, 36)

7. Rice water “Mi tang”: This kind has many impurities; it is

essentially not transparent. It is similar to the white murky liquid leftover when you put too much water in your steamed rice or make rice porridge. (pics 37, 38)

8. White base “Bai di”: This kind is not transparent; it has a lot

of what looks like cotton inside. It

9. Dry base: This kind has no water and very coarse texture.

The color and water have a mutual relationship, if there is both good color and good water then the value is immensely greater than if just one is good. For example, Dense green, Imperial, and Vivid green Feicui are all expensive on their own, but they all go up in price by tens or hundreds of thousands when they are the Glass variety. Equally, if the jade has beautiful color but is composed of a coarse texture, or has a delicate texture but poor color, the value is very low. There is Feicui that is worth hundreds to millions, and there is Feicui with poor color and poor

At the same time, limited availability of raw materials means that small pieces of good Feicui are easier to come across, while larger stones are harder to obtain. When looking at two pieces of Jade with the same water and color, the size will greatly influence the price. Have you ever queued in a line and finally it was your turn to

be served, but the cashier simply said, “Sorry Sir/Madame, please move to the next line.”? I don’t know about you, but many times I ’ v e d e c i d e d t o l e a v e s u c h places and spend my money at a competitor’s establishment.

Creating a stressful, frustrating experience for customers certainly isn’t one of the top priorities. Let’s go back for a moment and see what would have happened if there was someone taking their time and inviting the customer to move to the next window right from the beginning.

It would take a couple of minutes, but genuine communication and help would avert feelings of dread replacing them with goodwill. And remember, customers who have a good experience want to come back again. Let’s look at three areas that create a good experience.

1. Convenience Customers place a very high value on convenience since time is a very precious commodity. People have got too much going on to put up with having their time wasted by unnecessary diff iculty and confusion. A company’s processes and the knowledge that reps are equipped with to answer customers’ questions play an essential role in making things easier and more convenient for customers. Take a moment to think about the following questions:

• Do you get flooded with tons of paperwork and a long series of questions when placing an order?

• Can an order be handled through one person, or different people (different departments) sometimes with conflicting results?

• Does a rep take action to help you or does he has to run back and forth to get permission from management first?

• How easy was it to find what you were looking for? In case you deal with customers, you’d better start looking at things from their point of view. You may surprise yourself with the changes you find to make.

2. Promptness Promptness is closely related to convenience since both touch that crucial issue of time. Customers want quick responses to their questions and requests. Be honest about not being able to provide immediate customer service and tell your customers how long the delay will be. If you let them have the option of waiting or coming back at a more convenient time, your truthfulness and respect will maintain their goodwill and trust.

3. Problem Solving We a l l h a d t i m e s w h e n w e couldn’t find what we were looking for, or couldn’t find anyone to help us. Other times we found someone but what they offered was more frustration. How did that feel?Creativity and f lexibility come handy in such situations.

Let’s assume that you’re a florist and a customer wants centerpieces for an upcoming high school reunion. As usual, limited funds and time accompany this situation. You talk about different types of plants, but none of them excite your customer. Even though you’re a florist, are flowers the best thing for this customer? How about using a candle surrounded by colored marbles in a bowl? This meets your customer’s cost meanwhile securing a job that generates revenue for your business along with exposure to the others at the reunion.

In conclusion, there are many things to make customers happy. Perhaps the most important thing is for you and your reps to give customers your best, everyday and all the time.

football, the Qingdao Drunken Tigers joined a tournament to prove the following equation:

Different Nationalities + One Spirit = VICTORY

And yes, it was a sweet finish indeed! The Tigers did make a statement when they nipped all the opponents and stole the cup.

Honor i s such a swee t reward, since it wasn’t an all-perfect tournament. In

some games, the tigers had to really struggle because of other teams' unruly conduct and behavior. In other times they had to endure, if not suffer, from bad refereeing.

A lot of things had been thrown at the team, but t h e s e d i d n ’ t p u l l t h e

tigers back from achieving their goal. Now, the team is enjoying the fruits of their hard training. They have already built a name and this name will be forever respected.

Me m o r i e s o f t h i s tournament are tr uly unforgettable! How I wish

I could compile them into a CD so everyone would see and witness how one friendly game could suddenly turn into havoc, or how one serious game could suddenly bring lots of laughter as well as drama.

Putting in a lot of effort and dedication were the secrets to victory. QDT are a very

young team composed of young and good-looking individuals. Instead of enjoying the limelight, these guys chose to balance life by engaging themselves with sport and physical training.

On Thursday nights, the team was always busy training amongst themselves, if not throwing in a friendly game with some other Korean or Chinese team.

I’ve always been ecstatic about watching football, especially if it’s Manchester United against Chelsea.

In such a very intense game, it was very easy for me to blame Drogba or Ballack for missing the goal, but when I was watching the Tigers' game I realized that playing football isn’t as easy as watching or taking photos along the sideline. Inside the field, it is a different story.

Each player has to take a position, face the ball, kick, dribble, pass and make sure that it is going to reach the goal. I can't remember now how many goals the Tigers scored in all, but if I’m going to describe them, they were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Thanks to the fearless strikers, and thanks also to every single player’s contribution of sweat and sometimes blood when they got hurt or injured. The Tigers had fallen on the field so many times, but they didn’t care. They just

stood up, played stronger and let the opposing team feel the pain of defeat.

荣誉是如此的甜美，虽然整个

过程并不完美。在一些比赛中，

由于一些球队的犯规行为，醉虎

的队员们必须奋力拼争；而另一

些时候，醉虎队必须忍受不当的

裁判结果。球队承受了太多的压

力，但这一切没有阻碍醉虎队努

力地实现他们的目标。经过艰苦

的训练，醉虎队终于获得了胜利

的硕果。他们已经建立了良好的

声誉，并且受人尊敬。

一切令人难以忘记，我希望能

用CD记录这所有的一切。每个人

都将见证一场友谊赛是如何突然

的比赛是怎样转眼间变成哄堂大

青岛醉虎队是一支非常年轻的队

伍，由很多年轻、英俊的队员组

成。他们并不沉迷于成为众人注

目的焦点，而将时间用于足球和

体能训练上。每周四的晚上，如

果不和其它韩国球队或中国球队

展开友好的比赛，球队通常都忙

于训练。

我对观看足球赛非常地着迷，

尤其是曼彻斯特联队大战切尔西

队。在这样精彩的比赛中，我会

醉虎队

经常抱怨德罗巴或巴拉克没有进

球。但当我观看醉虎队的比赛

时，我意识到踢足球并不像观看

足球或在场边拍照那样简单。足

球比赛是完全不同的一回事。每

一个球员必须占据一个位置，面

对足球，踢球、带球、传球并确

保尽力进球。虽然我并不清楚醉

虎队到今天为止共进了多少球，

但如果让我来形容他们的话，他

们确实让人惊讶！感谢所有勇往

直前的队员，感谢每一位球员的

奉献和努力，感谢每一位球员的

伤与痛，所有这一切最终成就了

或甜蜜或心酸的果实。虽然一次

次的跌倒，但他们并不气馁。他

们仍将坚强挺立，将更加强壮，

让对手饱尝失败的滋味。

After submitting all of my coursework, I went to Bath. As a reputed translator

once said, “Bath is an elegant and stylish city.” Situated in the southwest of England, it is featured with special idyllic scenery. At first sight, I got absolutely addicted to it.

In Central Bath, the dominant style of architecture is Georgian, which evolved from the Palladian revival style and was employed a lot in the development of this city. Walking through this compact little town and checking the faces of people there, all my previous tension was released. This place is paradise for tourists of the world. Here, nobody is in a rush, so it is easy to relax.

Since Bath is well known for its 'baths,' I paid a visit to The Great Bath, which is a well-preserved Roman site for bathing. Surrounded by statues on the terrace, this Great Bath Museum has been modified several times. The water was very hot. As an old legend goes, it cured King Lear’s father who suffered from leprosy. But now, this Great Bath is protected and not allowed for bathing anymore.

By mid-June, I came back to China and lived far away from the country, which had greeted me with open warm arms for a year. Luckily, I was given a chance to work for A-list fashion magazines. I felt like Anne Hathaway in the film "The Devil Wears Prada", stepping into the scene with mental unrest and behavioral oddness. I started my one-month internship with Marie Claire.

During that whole month, I was in a fast pace of life with writing, rewriting, contacting the advertisers, and preparing for commercial shoots. Sometimes, I was quite stressed out with all the deadlines, b u t i t s e e m e d s o r e wa r d i n g afterwards. I did learn a lot.

For my bir thday this year, in Beijing, I celebrated by myself and made a big wish. My wish was for everyone I have met in life to have their dreams and make them come true. Surely, we all will, right? - Sophie Liu

文郡，有着独特的田园风光。在

第一眼对视的那个刹那，就无可

救药地迷恋上了他。

他有着英国最高贵的街道，和

曲线最优美的建筑。乔治亚时期

的“古典主义对称与和谐”，匀

称而庄严，典型的“英派印象”

和乡村风光“混搭”得恰到好

处，浑然天成。

在城池里放肆地穿梭着，心旷

神怡，每一个人的表情都是那么安

宁，祥和——这里真的是让人彻底

休憩的小镇，很放松、很放松。

去了久负盛名的巴斯浴池，

阳光很好，洒在一池绿水之上，

泛着暖暖的光亮。池水微微地

烫，传说这池水是神水，它治好

了李尔王父亲拉杜德的麻风病，

从此，王子拉杜德大为欢喜，将

这个池塘修为温泉浴池。

倚着圆柱，坐在池边，很久。

静静地任凭时间流淌，仿佛，时

光在指尖停滞住。之前的连夜赶

稿的“痛苦”似乎完全地被分

解，释放出无限快乐的因子，在

空气间无穷地放大着。

巴斯印象。很美。街道上有很

多走过的美丽女子。裙衣飘飘，

一转身，一回眸，或张扬，或温

软，一种关于美好的气息悄然传

递。禁不住这种美丽的诱惑，冲

进沿街小店，换上白色的长裙。

女子，是应该尽情地展示所有的

美好的。与年轻无关。是内心深

处对自己全情的认可与接纳。

六月，搬出了女子公寓。返

回。抵京。于是与那个熟悉的地

方——接纳我一年的国度，开始

了为期两个月的时差七小时。

依旧马不停蹄般地高调奋斗，

低调生活。很幸运，得到一个珍

贵的机会，在一家很不错的时尚

杂志工作，生活过得极度紧凑而

有序。策划选题、联系广告商、

写稿、改稿、拍片，虽然常常地

觉得，繁琐接踵而至，可是心却

前所未有的轻松。这段时间，很

是有收获的。

依旧忙碌，却前所未有地学会

呵护自己。做好吃的甜点和水果

沙拉，算是对自己努力工作的犒

赏。生日那天。一个人度过。许

下大大的心愿，希望我爱的人和

爱我的人都要好好的。希望每一

个遇见的人都能找到自己的梦想

并为之孜孜以求，达成志愿。

和卡村的朋友依旧间或地聊

着。听说七月七日，那里天气

晴，听说某天那里又下起了雨，

Africa, a primitive land, young and energetic, is regarded as a continent suffering from

poverty and in need of foreign aid. Five years ago, I was deeply impressed by the beauty of West Africa and its unpolluted coastline. Ghana is renowned for being the hometown of Kofi Annan, the former general secretary of United Nations. The GDP in Angola and Namibia witnessed g reat improvement after the diamond mines were found there. The Ivory Coast lying at the west side of Africa looks like a string of a pearl necklace. I took a lot of scenic photos and I have to admit that Africa has changed, beyond poverty.

Five years later, I embarked on the journey of Africa again. The trip included DR Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, Madagascan and Uganda. The ten countries could not be poorer. I got the opportunities to visit these ten countries via sea, land and air. The whole process was fi l led with adventure and stimulation, but what really touched and shocked the depth of my soul were the longing and angry eyes of African children.

The photo below was taken beside a lake on the highest land of the eastern city Bukavu in DR Congo. I shot the image of the child on the lake. He is one of the poor children

living in the primitive tribes by the lake. An African friend travelling with me told me, “There are nearly 300,000 destitute Congolese and Rwandans living along the lake between Bukavu and Goma. Some of the children might be starved to death if they fail to sell out their fruits on the passing pleasure boat.” What an appalling story! I now understand why the longing looks in their eyes turn suddenly into anger after they are refused the business, as that means not only hunger but also death for them.

The lake water was pure and blue. The virgin forest on both shores, though not dense, dragged the African sky close to the lake surface. The lake water shined and glistened, accompanied by the clear and melodious sound given by the Congo national flag.

The pleasure boat slowed down and berthed at a makeshift pier. Local people on the land carried pawpaw, pineapples and other fresh fruits, rushing to the boat for business. They were in dirty and shabby clothes while rich sightseers on the

boat wore luxury watches and took photos excitedly, beckoning the poor people on the land like they were treating dogs. Amidst the noise of brawling and bargaining, the boat engine started. The expression of a child who was looking at the unsold fruit in his hand and by his feet attracted my camera lens like a magnet. He was just abused by the rich visitors and had a ringing slap from a waiter on the boat. I thought he would cry and lie on the ground to scream, but he did not. His deep eye socket, with not a trace of tears, was filled with indignation mixed with a touch of expectation. But it was more of contempt. Although he did not say anything, his look was more shocking, as this was the most primitive and purest look I’ve ever seen.

Poverty is not a sin and does not demand mercy. Care and affection are what poor children in destitute Africa need. The late world super star Michael Jackson sang, “We are the world.” And I want to say: “Love can change the world.” - Chen James

非洲这个年轻而充满原始气息

的大陆，多年来给国人的印象就

是贫穷、需要援助。五年前我曾

感叹西非的美丽和未被污染的海

岸线。加纳因前联合国秘书长科

非•安南而著名。安哥拉、纳米比

亚有了钻石矿GDP便攀升了一大

截。象牙海岸如一条珍珠项链镶

嵌在蔚蓝色的非洲西海岸。当时

我拍了许多的风光佳照。我为此

还感叹非洲变了,已远离贫穷了。

五年过去了，我又重新踏上了

非洲之旅。但此次去的非洲十国

有刚果•金、刚果•布、卢旺达、布

隆迪、莫桑比克、埃塞俄比亚、

坦桑尼亚、赞比亚、马达加斯加

和乌干达。非洲这十个国家如台

阶般比肩显穷。我也从海、陆、

空360℃全方位地穿越了这条非洲

的贫困线。穿越的过程一路有惊

有险有刺激，但更多的是非洲儿

童期盼而忿怒的眼神给我的心灵

深处的震撼和感动。

其中最让我感动的一幕发生在

刚果•金的东部城市布卡武至高点

的湖面上。就是本文开头那张照

片。片中的儿童形象是我在湖面

上抓拍的。他是住在湖岸边原始

部落的许多贫困儿童中的一个。

据随行的非洲友人说:“在布卡

武至高马两城市间的湖边两岸居

住近三十万贫穷的刚果及卢旺达

人。他们当中有许多孩子如果没

办法在过路的游船上卖掉自己手

中的水果，那么他就有可能被饿

死，这多么让人毛骨悚然。这让

你看到孩子眼中先是期盼而后转

成愤怒，不是生意不成而挨饿，

而是甚至有死亡的可能。

湖水纯净蔚蓝，两岸的原始林

木虽不密集但那一抹一抹的幽绿

也会让你倍感非洲的天空与湖面

挨得那么近，水光潋滟，波光粼

粼。一面刚果国旗随风朴落落地

发出清脆的声响。

游船减缓了航速，停靠在一

个简易的小码头旁。岸边人们拿

着的、顶着的、扛着的、背着的

全是木瓜、菠萝等各种当地新鲜

水果。他们的衣服又脏、又皱、

又破。船上那些富人们一边拍

照，一边看着腕上的豪华手表。

嘴里像唤狗一样叫喊着岸上的穷

人们。在怒骂声和讨价还价的叫

喊声中，游船的发动机轰轰开始

起动了，有个孩子看着手中和脚

下未卖出去的水果，他的目光像

磁石一样吸住了我的镜头。他刚

被船上的富人恶骂一顿，还被船

上的一位服务人员打了一个很响

的耳光。我原以为他会哭喊，会

躺在地上发出吼叫。可是令我惊

讶的是，他连—滴眼泪也没有，

那双深嵌的大眼晴既有愤恨又有

一丝盼望，但更多的是鄙视。他

嘴里无话可说，这目光更让我倍

感震撼，因为这是我看到的最原

始最纯净的目光。

贫穷不是罪，更不需要怜悯。

在贫穷的非洲大陆上的穷孩子们

更需要的是关爱。正像刚刚过逝

的天皇巨星迈克尔·杰克逊创

作的歌中所唱的：“We are the

world”，但我更想说：“LOVE

CAN CHANGE THE WORLD”。

Author Geraldine Brooks leads the reader from the present into the past through stories about the individuals interacting with the book from the civil war in Sarajevo to medieval Spain. expertly weaves these stories together.

Printz Award for best young adult novel in 2006. This is a coming of age story focusing on several high school juniors at a boarding school in Alabama. The book is told from the perspective of a new student, Miles, who in the past did not fit in and did not have any deep friendships. Actually many of the events that occur at boarding school are mundane, but Green describes them in humorous and creative

ways. Many times this book had me laughing aloud. Other events take on epic portions for Miles and the new friends he meets at school. The effectiveness of the book is not just from the events, but from how accurately Green captures the doubts and questions that teenagers face as they grow and develop into adults. The dialogues and conversations as well as Miles thoughts are incredibly authentic and the characters are odd and endearing. Their types of stories and how they tell their stories will be familiar to readers and for Chinese readers may provide insight into American culture.
