Moatti self-cleaning filters
Benefits
• No disposal costs.
• Large maintenanceintervals.
• Low maintenance costs.• Increased oil lifetime.
6
Stops particles larger than mesh size.
• Continuous backflushing.• Backflushed oil particles are trapped by
the second stage filter (the diversion).
• Accumulated contaminants are
removed by periodic drain.
• Maintenance interval > 12000 hours.
Two Functions: Protection and Elimination

Triangular mesh (dutch type):
Poor clean ability, particles are blocked in angles
•Bad access to surface, difficult to inspect andclean.
Balance of efficiency and cleaning
Easily cleaned by backflushing = Longest
interval between manual cleaning
full access to surface = Easily cleanedmanually + Easily inspected
Higher manufacturing cost

Benefits of continuous back flushing
• Longer cleaning intervals• A low pressure drop over the filter elements, which furtherreduces the risk of cracking
• Constant pressure drop over the filter
• Small amount of drain to discharge periodically. The use offiltered oil for the back flushing process also eliminates the needfor compressed air.
The continuous back flushing of the filtersignificantly prevents the adhesion of retainedsolids to filter surfaces, which result in:

FCM - Main filter
• Filter installed mostly in one of thefollowing places:
• Cold side – after the supply pumps
• Hot side - after the heaters
A protection of the engine and injectorsfrom potentially damaging particles
18
FCM - Filter configuration
Standard• Automatic filter with manual standby
filter, installed on cold side• Automatic drain at regular intervalls
• Alarms for high pressure drop andstop of electric motor • Automatic drain of filter at high
pressure drop alarm
Option• Double automatic filter for double
safe operation available as option

Fuel oil indicator Filters
• The indicator filter is usually placed near the engines, toverify the good operation of the main fuel oil filter
• It’s mesh is larger than the main filter
• The filter is a manual filter
• Usually supplied by the engine maker
• Not suitable to mount on the FCM – since it should be
close to the engine. Can be delivered loose.

Benefits of The Eliminator
• Eliminates costly cartridge filters and their related disposalcosts.
• A better filtration system for prolonged oil life and betterprotection
of your engine.
• Less downtime hence fewer man-hours.• Payback period under 2 years.
Advantages:
36
• Required maintenance for the Full Flow up to 12,000running hours on engines burning heavy fuel oil and atengine overhaul for engines burning diesel oil.
• An adaptable system for easy retrofitting.
• Required maintenance for the centrifuge up to 2,000hours, involving only the replacement of the sludgecollecting paper.

Why to they use Alfa LavalMoatti filters.

The Eliminator
self-cleaning filter system cuts maintenance
costs onboard Boston Harbor Cruise ferries; By GregSchmelz, Alfa Laval
• A routine oil and filter change is normally a messy and awkward job.
• Boston Harbor Cruises found that Alfa Laval’s Eliminator
,saved $2100 per engine per year in oil, filter and labor costs.
• With a total of three boats, each with four engines, equipped with theEliminator, Boston Harbor Cruises save a total of $25,200 per year.
•“After three years in operation, we are still seeing perfect oil analysisso extended engine life is an additional payoff,”
•The only maintenance required is replacement of the sludgecollection paper in the separator.

39
The majority of the savings are the result of reduced maintenance hours.
With traditional cartridge filters, maintenance is performed every 250hours and takes 3 man hours per engine.
On average, each boat with four engines requires 12 oil changes per year, totaling 144 man hours.
In contrast, service on the Eliminator and the Centinel engine is requiredat 1 000-hour intervals and takes only 2 to 3 hours.
Cummin’s Centinel system blends used oil with the fuel to be combustedin the power cylinders which allows the oil to be converted to usefulenergy in the diesel engines.
Anything less than 100 ppm is not bad. We have not noticed any oilconsumption either,” comments Tarrant. “As a bonus, we expect to see18,000 to 20,000 hours of service before the engines need a majoroverhaul. The normal interval between overhauls for engines not equippedwith the Eliminator has been 9000 to 12,000 hours of service.”
40
“There are other intangible benefits with the Eliminator filter system,”
adds Tarrant.
With the Eliminator, we avoid the environmental issues involved with
disposing of oil and filters and safety issues with employees handling
and carrying wastes up the galley stairs.
Each engine needs 35 gallons of oil and that means 35 gallons that has
to go up and down the stairs.
The only waste product with the Eliminator is one piece of paper and
that is the filter. This frees up our maintenance crew to perform other
duties on the boat.”
