TODAY’S GOSPEL READING Այսօրվա Ավետարանը
Matthew 5:17-48 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to
abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore,
whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will
be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister
has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms
quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.
26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that
everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your
right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity,
causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear
falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or
by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything
more than this comes from the evil one. 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say
to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if
anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the
good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if
you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Prayer
One of our most fundamental Christian responsibilities is to pray. There is truly great power in prayer. During this
Divine Liturgy and throughout this next week your prayers are requested:
For the spiritual growth of The Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe; For more young men to hear the Lord’s call to service into the Holy
Priesthood of the Armenian Church; For other young men and women also to hear God’s call to serve His Church. For Unity of the Armenian
Church and of all Churches. For the sick, homeless, hungry, the poor and disabled; those in mourning, lonely or depressed; those experiencing
emotional, physical or spiritual difficulties; For those experiencing family, employment or financial difficulties; For the increase of love and
understanding among us all; For us all to gain a personal relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ;
And especially for good health for: All our parishioners who are ill or in recovery
During the period of Great Lent, the church offers Services reflective of
this penitential season. They are part of the Armenian Church’s cycle of
seven daily hours of worship.
The Morning Hour – In the service of the Moring Hour – Aravodyan
Zahm the Church thanks God for the new day and, as Sun warms and
nourishes the Earth, we ask God to bless and protect us during the course
of the coming day.
The Sunrise Service is an early morning service that is unique to the
Armenian Church. It seems to have developed around the 7-8th century
in those Armenian monasteries that had the custom of fusing the Night
Service (Keesherayeen Zham) and the Morning Service (Aravodyan
Zham) together into one composite ceremony that began in the middle of
night and ended before dawn. St. Nersess Shnorhali (d. 1173) vastly
reformed the service, adding new hymns and prayers, and probably
melodies as well. It will be performed every Sunday during the Great
Lent after the Divine Liturgy. It reminds us that God is the giver of the
morning light and He is the Light of our Salvation.
The Peace Hour and Rest Hour Services -These services are performed
on Fridays during the Great Lent. Originally the Peace Hour is one of two
compline services of the Armenian Church intended to be offered late at
night. The service features abundant Psalmody, beloved and stirring
hymns, as well as prayers for a peaceful night and protection against evil
and misfortune.
This services contains the prayers of St. St. Nersess Shnorhali ( the
Graceful).
Holy Communion In the Armenian Church Holy Communion is distributed in the
following manner. The communicant stands before the priest, makes the sign of the cross and says:
“Megha Asdoodzo”, "I have sinned against God."
The priest then places a small particle of our Lord's Body and Blood -- the bread having been dipped into the wine -- directly into the mouth
of the communicant. The communicant again makes the sign of the Cross and steps aside for others to approach the blessed sacrament.
After all have received Holy Communion, using the chalice to imprint the sign of the Cross over the communicants, the priest imparts the
blessing of Psalm 28:9 : "Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; shepherd them and lift them up from henceforth until
eternity".

Weekly Wisdom
Treasures in Heaven Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are not disciplines in “self-
improvement” but authentic spiritual living, the way of humility, repentance, and Christ-likeness. Rather than giving something up, fasting during Great is about accumulating treasures in heaven. To
“lay up” treasures in heaven requires time, wisdom, sacrifice, investment. In Krapar, the verb is kantsem, which means to amass
or hoard. Paradoxically, the way to amass treasures in heaven is by giving away, by emptying ourselves. Prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving is the emblem of the life Jesus requires from us, a life in which we give the entirety of ourselves to God and to others.
Our time is precious. Give away your love and friendship, listen to others, lift up those who are suffering, and when necessary, give of
your possessions. Disentangle yourself from earthly “stuff” and attach yourself to the true Treasure, Jesus Christ. This is the
Kingdom life, the life in which we experience the riches of God. Speaking to God, St. Gregory of Narek echoes this reality when he prays, “You, who are more enriched by giving than receiving. Your
treasure increases more by sharing than gathering. Your estate grows more by disbursing than collecting. Your stores pile up
more by distributing than hoarding (Prayer 31). By Dn. Eric Vozzy

FAR Scholarship Helps One Young Journalist to Pursue Her Dream
Marine Khachatryan always wanted to be a journalist. From age 13, she followed the country’s politicians and the work of the journalists who
covered them. She considered leaving the country for her master’s degree when she got the news that she was the recipient of the Ester Ajemian
Scholarship Program. Marine calls the scholarship a breakthrough and a turning point in her academic career, as it enabled her to stay in Armenia
to continue her education. Today, she’s finishing her thesis at Yerevan State University and working a coveted position at Radio Liberty Yerevan.
“Thanks to FAR, I stayed home. I live a meaningful life now,” she said.

Sunday of Expulsion
The second Sunday of the period of Great lent is called the Sunday of Expulsion. The basis of the mystery of and the
name of the day can be found in the Holy Bible, the Book of Genesis: “So the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden and made him cultivate the soil from which he had been formed” (Genesis 3:23). Prehistory is the following.
The human being, listening to the deceitful words of Satan, disobeyed the divine commandments and ate the forbidden fruit, As punishment the human being, the human being, of course, didn’t die at once, but was deprived of the eternity granted by God and was cursed Since then man must work hard and sweat to make the soil produce enough food, and
woman will have pain in giving birth to her offspring. And in end God said to the human being: “You were made from soil
and you will become soil again” (Genesis 3:19). The church Fathers have given the Sundays of the Period of great lent such names and mysteries which symbolize the
mankind’s way of life – birth, sinning, regret and repentance. This should serve for the human being as an
occasion for thinking of himself/herself and his/her lifer so that the period of great Lent should be fruitful and
productive.
