English through Mythology – Mount Songni (속리산)

Stories from Mount Songni:

Creative Dialogue

Instructions: Please read the sample dialogue (대화) about Mount Songni (속리산) and its stories. Please check that you understand the sample dialogue. Later, you will make up a new dialogue (새로운 대화) about Mount Songni and Beopjusa Temple.

Sample dialogue: Ji-hye and Cheol-su visit Beopjusa Temple and Mount Songni.

Ji-hye: Here we are at the foot of Mount Songni!

Cheol-su: Mount Songni is beautiful in the spring (봄), isn’t it? Look at all the cherry blossoms (벗꽃)!

Ji-hye: I’m glad we came. What shall we do first?

Cheol-su: Let’s have a look at Beopjusa Temple (법주사). Beopjusa Temple is located at the base of Mount Songni. It’s a very famous temple (유명한 사철).

Ji-hye: That’s true. Guidebooks always have a picture of Beopjusa Temple. I think photographers (사진사들) like Beopjusa Temple because of the big golden Buddha statue. The big golden Buddha statue is very photogenic (사진 이 잘 받는).

Cheol-su: Here we are at Beopjusa Temple!

Ji-hye: Look! There’s the big golden Buddha statue. It’s very tall, isn’t it?

Cheol-su: Wow! It’s very impressive, but it doesn’t look very old. I wonder how old the statue is…

Ji-hye: Let’s read the sign underneath the statue. Maybe we can learn about the history of the statue. What does the sign say?

Cheol-su: According to (에 따르면) the sign, the statue has a long history, but it was coated in gold in 2002.

Ji-hye: 2002? That was the year of the World Cup.

Cheol-su: Yes. The sign mentions the World Cup. I think the big Buddha was coated in gold to celebrate the World Cup.

Ji-hye: That’s strange. I don’t think the Buddha played football.

Cheol-su: Ji-hye, what shall we eat for dinner?

Ji-hye: When I come to the mountains, I always like to eat rice mixed with mountain vegetables (산채비빔밥).

Cheolsu: Good idea! I suppose the vegetables will be from Mount Songni.

Ji-hye: I’m hungry. Shall we go and have dinner now?

Cheol-su: Good idea! Let’s go!

Instructions: Now it’s your turn to make up a new dialogue (새로운 대화) about Mount Songni and its stories. Please work with a partner. You have six minutes to make up a new dialogue. Try to use new vocabulary (새로운 어휘) from today’s lesson. Good luck!
