PHOTO CONCERT PARTY 2014 AT CORK OPERA HOUSE With great excitement and joy, MGCC filled Cork Opera House with music and fun, for the first annual Concert Party on Sunday Feb 9th. The event featured the main stage concert, an ‘open mic’ stage and an exhibiƟon throughout the foyer areas, with circus performers, balloons and face painters truly bringing out the ‘party’ in ‘Concert Party’! CelebraƟng MGCC’s partnerships with music educaƟon providers, schools and musicians involved in the programme, the concert featured fantasƟc performances by children throughout the city. The exhibiƟon sh showcased highlights and achievements, featuring various video presentaƟons, audio and fabulous photography. Glamorous copresenters George Hanover (actor, writer) and GMC – (Rapper, aka Garry McCarthy) were joined by animated character ‘Mic’, created for the occasion by Damien Murphy of LIMBO. The three presenters together brought plenty of giggles, and even a few impromptu jokes, from the audience! W Welcome to the Music GeneraƟon Cork City Spring NewsleƩer! MGCC conƟnues to expand and develop, forming new partnerships, developing new music educaƟon programmes and creaƟng exciƟng performance opportuniƟes and events. Kicking off the third year of MGCC was our first ever Concert Party, held at Cork Opera House on February 9th (see below). Music GeneraƟon Cork City Open Forum on April 9th will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the developments taking place in the lives of the young people involved in MGCC’s diverse music educaƟon programme. All of the events and news featured in our newsleƩers are made possible possible by the hard work, passion and dedicaƟon of the music tutors, music educaƟon providers, schools, communiƟes and the ongoing valued support and commitment of local MGCC stakeholders; Cork City Council, Cork ETB, the HSE, UCC, CIT, and Cork City Partnership. With 2014 off to a promising start, we will work to ensure the rest of the year conƟnues on this high note! CREATIVE TRADITION AND CLUB CEOIL KNOCKNAHEENYSt.  Mary's  on  the  Hill  N.S.,  Knocknaheeny  is  experiencing  a  rejuvena on  of  music-­‐making  as  February  4th  saw  the  inaugural  Club  Ceoil  Knocknaheeny,  a  weekly  a er-­‐school  music  club  with  Jessie  Cawley,  Karl  Nesbi  and  Eimear  Arkins  providing  small  group  tui on   including   singing,   bodhrán,   fiddle,   n  whistle   and   flutes.   37   children   have   enthusias cally   joined   up,   and   Club   Ceoil  Knocknaheeny  hope  to  invite  other  primary  and  secondary  school  students  to  join  from  September  2014.

Crea ve  Tradi on's  4th  class  ensemble  performed  with  gusto  at  the  MGCC  Concert  Party,   and  most   recently,   all   280  Crea ve   Tradi on   students   at   the   school,   from  junior  infants  through  to  6th  class,  performed  Irish  songs  and  tunes  as  part  of  the  school’s   Ceolchoirm  Seachtain  na  Gaeilge   St.   Patrick's  Day   celebra on  on  March  14th   (pictured   le ).   This   was   filmed   with   thanks   to   local   bodhrán   player   and  video/photographer,   Eddie   Hennessy,   and   will   be   online   soon   at  www.vimeo.com/musicgenera oncc.    

BARRACK STREET BAND WIN ST. PATRICK’S PARADE AWARDBarrack  Street  Band  celebrated  St.  Patrick’s  Day  in  style  this  year  taking  home  the  award  for  ‘Best  Overall  Musical  Entry’  at  the  Cork  City  parade  for  the  second  year  running.  Their  entry  featured  performances  by  the  Barrack  Street  Senior  and  Youth  Bands,  and  celebrated  the  partnership  with  Music  Genera on  Cork  City  with  children  from  Greenmount  N.S.,  Morning  Star  N.S.,Gaelscoil  an  Teaghlaigh  Naofa,  Togher  G.N.S.,  and  Scoil  na  CCroíse  Naofa  helping  carry  the  MGCC  banner  through  the  parade!  Well  done  and  here's  hoping  it  will  be  three  in  a  row  next  year!

Members   of   the   Barrack   Street   Senior   &   Youth   Bands   with   Chairman   Billy   O’  Callaghan  and  Secretary  Gillian  Holland  being  awarded  ‘Best  Overall  Musical  Entry’  by  Deputy  Lord  Mayor  Lorraine  Kingston.

CONCERT PARTY LAUNCHED IN STYLETheThe  launch  of  Concert  Party  2014  was  a  wonderful  event  on   Feb   6th,   se ng   the   scene   for   a   magical   musical  takeover   of   Cork   Opera   House.   The   Blue   Angel   bar  providing  the  perfect  backdrop  for  this  ambient  musical  event,   with   the   sun   se ng   as   the   band   played   jazz  classics.   Live  music  was  provided  by  The  Clubmen,  Bob  Seward’s  band  (founder  of  Cork  Academy  of  Music),  and  thethe   evening   also   featured   performances   by   SoundOUT  band   ‘Till   4,   from   Terence   MacSwiney   Community  College,   and   the   Sundays  Well   Girls’   N.S.   Saxophonists  (pictured  right)   took  us   ‘Somewhere  over   the  Rainbow’  with   their   Cork  Academy  of  Music   tutor   Len  McCarthy.  View  these  performances  online  at  www.vimeo.com/musicgenera oncc  .

DVD SHOWREELThe  Music  Genera on  Cork  City  showreel,  which  had  its  preview  screening  at  the  Concert  Party  launch  on  Feb  6th  will  have  its  premiere  public  screening  at  the  OpenOpen  Forum  event  in  the  Crawford  Gallery  on  April  9th.  This  5  minute  video  captures  the  spirit  of  the  programme  from  the  point  of  view  of  the  children  and  young  people  involved.  Filmed  in  5  schools  across  the  city  in  December,  IT  will  be  made  available  to  view  online  at  www.vimeo.com/musicgenera oncc  a er  its  April  9th  premiere.

SOUNDOUT GROUP ‘TIL 4 ON RTE’S ELEV8

OnOn  February  7th  Darren  O'Leary,  Josh  Crean,  Stuart  Murphy  and  Deana  Purcell   from   Terence   MacSwiney   Secondary   School   travelled   to   RTE  studios  in  Dublin  to  perform  live  on  the  Elev8  TV  programme  on  RTE  Two.  The   young   SoundOUT   musicians,   collec vely   known   as   ‘ l   4,   did   a  fantas c  job  performing  their  version  of  The  Script’s  ‘The  man  who  can’t  be  moved’.  

CHILD PROTECTION WORKSHOPSMusicMusic   Genera on   Cork   City   is   partnering   with  Youthwork   Ireland   Cork   –   The   Hut,   to   provide   Child  Protec on  training  for  all  our  tutors.  The  first  course  will  take  place  on  Saturday  May  17th,  10am  to  4pm.  Costs  will   be   covered   by   MGCC,   including   lunch.   MGCC  requires   all   personnel   to   undertake   recognised   Child  Protec on   training,   and   this   course   will   provide   an  opportunityopportunity   to   enhance   understanding   of   the   child  protec on   policies   of   Music   Genera on.   Further  informa on  and  bookings:  [email protected]

SPACES FOR EXTRA STUDENTS IN SOUNDOUT CLASSESTheThere  are  currently   some  spaces   for  children  and  young  people,   from  6th   class   up,   to   join  music   tui on   groups,   provided   by   SoundOUT   in  partnership   with   MGCC,   every   Wednesday   in   Terence   McSwiney  Community  College.  Instruments  are  available  during  the  classes,  and  a  singing   group   works   on   a   wide   range   of   repertoire.   An   affordable  contribu on  is  requested  from  the  students  who  par cipate.For  further  informa on  please  contact  [email protected]

MIND YOUR HEAD MUSIC EVENTTheThe  Mind   your   head   concert   in   the   Firkin   Crane   on  March  28th  was  a  powerful  event  filled  with  emo onal  performances.  Organised  by  Youth  Work  Ireland  Cork  (The   Hut)   to   promote   posi ve   mental   health,   and  musically  directed  by  MGCC  tutor  Rory  McGovern,  the  concert   featured   musicians   from   The   Hut’s   Tuesday  night   music   group   (run   in   partnership   with   Music  GeneGenera on  Cork  City),  ‘ l  4  -­‐  SoundOUT  students  from  Terence   MacSwiney   Community   College   and   Circles,  led  by  Cillian  McSweeney.  Other  wonderful   performances   included   the  Break   it  Down   Ini a ve’s   tribute   to   a   friend,   MGCC   tutor  Ophelia  McCabe’s   powerful   performance,   and   Karen  Underwood   bringing   the   house   down   with   Nina  Simone’s  ‘I  got  life’.  An  inspiring  night  for  an  important  cause.  www.ywicork.com/mentalhealth

BALLYPHEHANE TRAD ORCHESTRATheThe  Ballyphehane  Trad  Orchestra,  an  exci ng  new  tradi onal  Irish  music  project  presented  by  Club  Ceoil  Ballyphehane  in  partnership  with  MGCC,  kicked   off   on   January   18th.   It   provides   the   opportunity   for   young  musicians  between  the  ages  of  8  and  18  to  receive  excellent  tui on  and  guidance   from   skilled   tutors,   and   to   gain   experience   of   playing   and  performing  with  other  young  musicians.  Trad  Orchestra  rehearsals  take  place   on   Saturdays   and   Tuesday   evenings   at   Gaelscoil   an   Teaghlaigh  NaoNaofa,  Ballyphehane.  

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED CONDUCTOR DR. DOREEN RAO FACILITATES CHORAL WORKSHOP IN MAYFIELDMarch   27th  was   a   special   day   for   20   young   girls,   aged   between   7   and   13   years,   involved   in   the   Cork   Community   Project   in  partnership  with  Music  Genera on  Cork  City,  as  interna onally  renowned  choral  conductor  and  master  teacher  Dr.  Doreen  Rao  facilitated  a  choral  workshop  in  Mayfield  as  part  of  Music  Genera on's  Choral  Training  Programme.  Dr.  Rao’s  energy  and  talent  filled  the  hall  in  St.  Joseph’s  Community  Centre,  inspiring  hearhear elt  song  from  the  young  girls.  Having  come  together  only  four  weeks  prior  to  this  workshop,  under  the  musical  guidance  of  Voices  of  Cork  choral  conductor  Eamon  Nash,  the  girls  proved  that  the  future  of  choral  music  in  Cork  is  bright!Dr.  Rao’s  workshop  served  as  prepara on  for  the  ‘Big  Sing’  event  which  took  place  on  April  6th  in  the  Mansion  House  in  Dublin,  whe  House  in  Dublin,  where  hundreds  of  children  and  youngpeople  from  across  Ireland  gathered  for  a  na onal  choralperformance  organised  in  associa on  with  Music  Genera on,  The  Associa on  of  Irish  Choirs,  the  Choral  Music  Experience  Ins tute  and  Local  Music  Educa on  Partnerships.  Eamon  Nash  is  one  of  five  Cork-­‐based  Choral  Ar sts  being  supported  by  Music  Genera on  Cork  City  City  to  take  part  in  the  Choral  Music  Experience  Professional  Development  courses  with  Dr.  Doreen  Rao.

SUMMER MUSIC CAMPS 2014Following  the  success  of  2013’s  summer  programme,  MGCC  will  offer  a  wide  range  of  summer  music  experiences  in  partnership  with   providers,   Barrack   Street   Band,   SoundOUT,   Club   Ceoil,   ARTlifeCULTURE   and   other   community   based   ini a ves.   Further  informa on  as  follows:    

Summer Band Workshop with Barrack Street Band

August  5th  –  8thIInvi ng  young  brass,  wind  and  percussion  musicians  from  across  cork   city   and   county   to   take   part   in   four   fun   filled   days   of  workshops,   instrument   lessons   and   ensemble   playing.  Workshops   will   enhance   performance   skills   through   band  rehearsals   and   musical   explora on   including   rhythm,  conduc ng,  musicianship  and  collabora on.  New  to  the  camp  in  2014  will  be  beginner  band  suitable  for  students  who  have  taken  upup  their  instrument  in  the  last  year.  Ages  8  -­‐  16years,  beginner  to  grade  5.  Email:  [email protected]

TradCamp with Club Ceoil Dates  TBC.TradCamp,  which  is  organised  by  Club  Ceoil  and  UCC  music  lecturer  Michelle   Finnerty   returns   to   Gaelscoil   an   Teaghlaigh   Naofa,  Ballyphehane  for  one  week  of  immersion  in  diverse  aspects  of  Irish  tradi onal  music,  song  and  dance,  with  dates  yet  to  be  confirmed.  ChildChildren  will  have  the  opportunity  to  try  out  and  learn  a  range  of  instruments  including   n-­‐whistle,  bodhrán,  fiddle,  guitar,  mandolin  and  banjo.  Also,  watch  out   for  a  TradCamp  on   the  northside   this  year.  Details  will  follow  on  our  facebook  page.  For  more  informa on,  email  [email protected].
