Lake Naujan

Naujan Lake is the fifth largest lake in the Philippines. It is found in the northeast coast of theprovince of Oriental Mindoro on Mindoro Island; the island is in itself considered a discretebiogeographical region. The lake is 1 kilo!eters long and " kilo!eters #ide and is bounded b$ the!unicipalities of Naujan% Pola% &ictoria and 'ocorro. The lake is ho!e to rich ethnic and culturaldiversit$. The population is co!posed of the Mang$ans% indigenous people of Mindoro including theTad$a#an tribe in the area of the lake% and the (da!uong) or non*Mang$ans.

Naujan Lake is a #etland kno#n for its rich biodiversit$.Protected fish species such as Mugil dussumieri, Caranx

sexfasciagus and Lutianus argentimaculojus% and variousharvestable species.

The lake is an i!portant feeding or #intering ground for large nu!bers of ducks and other #aterbirds such as herons%egrets% terns% rails and bitterns. The rare Amaurornisolivaceous is a resident*breeding species found in the area.The ende!ic Philippine +rocodile Crocodylus mindorensis% acriticall$ endangered fresh#ater crocodile% #as recorded% but!a$ no# be e,tinct on Mindoro.

The Need to Conserve Naujan Lake

The lake is a productive fresh#ater fishing site. It is alsothe central feature of Naujan Lake National Park establishedin 1-"% #hich co!prises a /%10*hectare area of !arshesand forest. It has been included as one of the initialco!ponents of the National Integrated Protected reas'$ste! 2NIP'3 pursuant to the NIP' ct of 1--/.

The lake is a designated Ramsar Site% a #etland of international i!portance% because of itsbiodiversit$% its substantial nu!bers of #aterfo#ls and its critical role in the !igrator$ birds fl$#a$ path.

4o#ever% the increasing hu!an population has put a stress on the natural resources of the lake.Intensive fishing continuousl$ co!es in conflict bet#een preserving the National Park for #ildlife anddevelop!ent of the area for co!!ercial and subsistence level activities b$ the local residents. 5urther%large ani!als continue to be caught% including the s!all population of crocodiles.
