Model To turn wireless networking on or off

Gateway 450 and M405

This notebook does not have a hardware control to turn wireless networking on or off. Follow the procedure in “Turning wireless networking on and off using Windows” on page 4.

Gateway 3000, 4000, and 7000 Series

Press �� + �� on the keyboard. The wireless networking status indicator turns on when the wireless network is turned on.

Gateway M210, M320 and M520

Press �� + �� on the keyboard. The wireless networking status indicator turns on when the wireless network is turned on.

Gateway M275 Press �� + �� on the keyboard.

Gateway M675 Press the wireless network button located above the keyboard. The button glows blue when the wireless network is turned on.

Using a wireless network

Warning Radio frequency wireless communication can interfere with equipment on commercial aircraft. Current aviation regulations require wireless devices to be turned off while traveling in an airplane. IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11g communication devices are examples of devices that provide wireless communication. For more information, see “Turning wireless networking on and off” on page 4.

Important See “Safety, Regulatory, and Legal Information” in your user guide for general wireless regulatory and safety guidelines.

Important Note any antenna placement constraints in the user guide of each type of wireless device in your network.

Important IEEE 802.11a uses a different radio frequency than IEEE 802.11g. All wireless components must use the same frequency. A combination of IEEE 802.11a only and IEEE 802.11g only components will not work. Some wireless devices can broadcast and receive signals on both frequencies.

Important The speed of a wireless network is related to signal strength. Signal strength is affected by the distance between your wireless network devices, by radio interference, and by interference from natural obstructions such as walls, floors, and doors.

Tips & Tricks To add the ability to access a wired network to your wireless network, connect an access point to the router or use a router that has a built-in access point, such as the Linksys wireless access point router with 4-port switch.

Tips & Tricks When buying your access point, be sure the model includes everything your network needs, including:■ 802.11g or 802.11a support - for next-generation,

high-speed wireless communications■ Internet security features - such as a firewall to protect

your network from unwanted intruders■ Wireless security features - such as 128-bit WEP

encryption■ 4-port switch - to eliminate the need for additional

network hardware■ DHCP server/dynamic IP address assignment - to

automatically configure network and IP addresses

Important If you do not have a broadband connection already installed, make the necessary arrangements with your ISP. Be sure to find out how soon after the installation the line will be activated.

Important Broadband Internet settings will differ from ISP to ISP. Before you begin setting up your network, you should contact your ISP for any specific instructions they have for setting up a network.

Important If you want to access your company’s network through a hotspot, contact your network administrator for setup information. You will probably be routed through a VPN connection for maximum security.

Caution Because hotspots typically do not enable any security measures, the data that you are sending and receiving may be vulnerable.

Any of the files on your computer that are marked for sharing may be accessible to other users on the network.
