READING

1 Read the article and tick (✓) A, B, or C.

Until recently evidence that the world’s weather isbecoming more extreme and harder to predict waslargely anecdotal, without the support of any factualproof, and often angrily argued over. The majority ofscientists pointed out that drawing conclusions based ona couple of scorching hot summers or a particularlydamp spring was misleading. There have always beenoccasional weather extremes, and, although it’s temptingto believe the contrary, single events do not indicate ageneral change to the climate.

However, a study by the World Weather Organizationsuggests that there may well be factual evidence tosupport the idea that the world’s weather patterns arechanging. By recording weather events over the past twodecades, the organization has been able to ascertain thatthe number, although not necessarily the strength of,such extreme weather events as floods, droughts, andtornadoes has risen. Moreover, it predicts that weatherevents we now consider unusual will have become thenorm by the end of the next decade.

The world’s climate has been setting new records overthe last year. Just over 500 tornadoes hit the UnitedStates in May, causing untold damage, and breaking theprevious monthly record by more than 100. A heatwavein India killed hundreds, with temperatures rising to anastonishing 49 degrees Celsius, and also breaking allsorts of records. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Sri Lankaresulted in terrible floods and many casualties. And partsof Europe recorded average summer temperatures fivedegrees above what would normally be expected.Looked at separately, none of these events is particularlyremarkable, but when put together they represent aclear and worrying change to the world’s climate.

As a general rule, the World Weather Organization onlycompiles and reports its statistics. However, the figuresfor the last year were so alarming that the organizationfelt compelled to issue a warning of sorts. It pointed outthat the increase in the world’s temperature was greaterbetween 1900 and 2000 than it had been for any other100-year period during the past 1,000 years. Not onlythat, but temperatures from 1976 to 2000 rose at afaster rate than the previous 75 years when surfacetemperatures warmed up in an uneven way.

So, what or who is to blame? The World WeatherOrganization avoids this question, defining its own roleas a gatherer rather than an interpreter of information. The study recognizes that global warming is taking place, and points out that the figures are irrefutable in thisrespect, but it has no opinion about whether globalwarming is a natural phenomenon or one that humansare directly responsible for.

Example: Until recently, there was no proof that theworld’s weather was getting moreunpredictable.

A True ■■✓ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■

1 Before the World Weather Organization’s study, many

scientists disagreed that the world’s weather was, in

general terms, becoming wilder.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■2 Scientists argue that one or two periods of unusual

weather may mean the climate is changing.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■3 The World Weather Organization carried out a study

of weather events all over the world.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■4 The World Weather Organization’s study proved that

tornadoes are much more powerful than they were in

the past.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■5 According to the study, in the future, we should expect

more flooding.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■6 Before last year, the previous record for tornadoes in

May was probably about 400.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■7 Looking only at the heatwave in India it is possible to

prove the climate is changing.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■8 Unusually for the World Weather Organization, it used

this study to warn the world about global warming.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■9 The World Weather Organization warned that the

figures showed that global temperatures were rising at

an ever-increasing speed.

A True ■■ B False ■■ C Doesn’t say ■■10 According to the study, global warming is natural.

Example: Until recently, there was no proof that theworld’s weather was getting more unpredictable.

PROGRESS TEST F I LES 1–3

Lis tening 1Presenter If you ate too much at Christmas, maybe it’s time to get

out and get fit this New Year. But don’t worry, if youdread the gym and can’t stand celebrity exerciseprogrammes, then dancing your way to fitness may bejust for you.In the studio today, dance school owner and teacher,Carol Moore, is here to answer all the questions youmight have about taking up dance classes. Hi Carol.

Carol Hi.Presenter So, how long have you been running dance classes?Carol Oh, well, I started the dance school almost ten years

ago when I was only twenty. So, I’ve been in thisbusiness a very long time now.

Presenter Are most of your students young?Carol Well, a lot of people who come are young, and I don’t

get so many older people, but I like to think that itdoesn’t matter how old you are. We have lessons everyday except Sunday and Monday, and everybody’swelcome – you’re never too old to dance.

Presenter So, why is dancing a good way to keep fit?Carol Well, dancing is more fun than the gym. It’s an

enjoyable way to exercise and you’re learning newmoves and dances every week. I think that dancing is apopular form of exercise because of the social aspectthat comes with it. You can attend with your friends ormake new friends at the class. Dancing is cardiovascularexercise so it keeps your heart healthy.

Presenter I read recently that dance is becoming more popularthan sport with young people. Do you think that’s true?

Carol Absolutely. And the statistics prove it. The number ofpeople playing football in Britain is going down, butthe number of young people dancing is rising steadily.Did you know that an estimated 5 million people taketheir exercise at dance classes, which is a lot more thanplay football? In fact, dance exercise is one of the mostphenomenal growth areas of twenty-first century sportand social culture in Britain. As to why, well, I think it’sbecause people like to look good while they areexercising, and you look great when you’re dancing. And people like to do individual sports. With dance, aswith other individual sports, you set your own limits, improve at your own speed, and you’re neverembarrassed. In team sports, there’s always someonewho is better than you, it’s very competitive, and youfeel terrible when you make mistakes.

Presenter Which is your most popular class?Carol We do ballet, tap, and street dancing, but not jazz or

salsa dancing. Ballet is most popular with the childrenbut I would say that adult classes are equally as popularas each other – street dancing is very popular withteenagers, too. I think that joining a dance class givesyou a sense of discipline and confidence as well askeeping you fit. Like everything, it’s what you make ofit. I started dancing because my sister, who is really shy, wanted to learn, so I went along to keep her company –that was twenty years ago!

PROGRESS TEST F I LES 1–3

Lis tening 2

1Pete Hi Jane. Do you have a moment? We’re considering

Sophia for the new sales job. How would you describe herqualities?

Jane Sophia? Oh. That’s a difficult one. Well, her strengths arethat she works hard and gets on well with everybody. Shetends to want everything to happen straightaway – that’s afault. She needs to think things through more sometimes.A lack of experience, I’d say. And I suppose she needs to betougher at times – she needs to be better at telling peoplewhat she thinks. But she’s just such a kind and thoughtfulperson that, well, she’s too worried about upsettingsomeone, isn’t she?

2Kay Oh, Tim. You don’t look well. How are you feeling?Tim Oh, awful. I was sick this morning, my throat really hurts

when I swallow or speak even, and I just can’t keepanything down. I’ve got red spots all over my chest. And itfeels like somebody’s trying to break into my head with ahammer – my head really aches. But it’s not as if I’ve got ahigh temperature or streaming cold. I reckon I’ve hadsome sort of allergic reaction to something.

3Laura Have you ever been mugged, Joe?Joe I have, yeah, once. It was at a cashpoint. Not at knifepoint

or anything really scary, though. Not like my mate Paul –held up by a guy with a gun. Anyway, I was going on a tripand had just taken some money out when someonegrabbed it from me and punched me so hard that I fellagainst the wall. I was so shocked I didn’t do anything. Ijust stood there then sort of shouted ‘hey’ rather feebly. But he’d already got away.

4Jack What will you do if it rains tomorrow, Helen?Helen Come straight back home I suppose, but it’s hardly likely,

is it? Not after the spell of weather we’ve been having.Mind you, I heard that it isn’t going to be quite such ascorcher as today.

5Rachel What clothes did you wear when you were younger, Ben?Ben Oh, I’ve never been very fashionable. I used to wear

terrible jeans that didn’t fit me and tight, patterned shirts. But I did once have a leather jacket that all my friends usedto love. I looked quite stylish in it, apparently.
