TE PĀTAI TUATORU

He rite tonu te tātāhia o ngā mātāpuna-ā-waha, i runga i te whakapae he haurakiraki.

QUESTION THREE

Oral sources are often criticised for being unreliable. To an historian doing research, however, oral histories can be useful when combined with other sources.

Below is an oral recollection by a woman who witnessed the Beatles’ tour of New Zealand.

In June 1964, the Beatles came to Wellington. Huge crowds met them at the airport and also gathered outside the Hotel St George, where the group was staying. The police were not really prepared for the amount of people who flocked to see the group or for the hysterical behaviour of the girls. This was considered a major event for the young people of New Zealand as international groups, especially the likes of the Beatles, were very few and far between.

Fans at the airport were such that police were afraid people would get crushed against the wire barriers, and many did suffer injuries from the crush of people surging forward to get a look at the band members.

Thousands gathered outside the St George Hotel to see the Beatles come out on the balcony and wave. People were so desperate to see the group that they stood on the shop verandas and roofs, and police were worried that they would collapse under the weight.

The concert was held in the town hall – the only big venue that Wellington had – and the sound system brought a lot of criticism from the group, but the crowd was not worried as the screaming fans drowned out the music.

D. Jones, Wellington

Using evidence from the sources in the resource booklet to support your answer, how reliable and / or useful would the source above be for an historian studying the 1964 Beatles’ tour of New Zealand?
