Die nasionale prioriteitskomitee van landelike veiligheid definieer ’n plaasaanval soos volg: Acts of violence against farms and smallholdings are those acts aimed at any person or persons living on, working at or visiting farms or smallholdings with the intent to either murder, rape, rob or other-wise inflict bodily harm or to intimidate.

In 40 gevalle was 65 plaaswerkers direkte slagoffers.

MOSHATE - The trial of 18 people charged with public violence unfolded at the Mokerong Magistrate Court in Mahwelereng on Friday. The arrest follows after commu-nity unrest occurred in Moshate village last Thursday morning.

A large number of community members were present and standing in solidarity inside the periphery of the court room as the accused took their stand in docks. The indictment reflect charges including violent conduct and behaviour, malicious damage to property and contravening the Prevention of Public Violence and Intimidation Act, 1991.

The arrest follows after community mem-bers were protesting against the Water Waste Treatment Project initiated by Ivanplats. They cited unfair employment practices, and in-terference from ward councilors (whom they believe are allegely benefiting directly or indi-rectly form the project).

The community barricaded the N11, and Madiba cross-road and also burnt tyres (see photo right).

The protest turned violent as police offi-cials allegedly fired rubber bullets to disperse

MAPELA – Six people were arrested last Saturday after an alleged cattle thief died. Coetzee is Dinsdag, 22 Februarie oorlede.

Johannes Mmako’ (47) were also sentenced to three years for unlawfully possessing firearms. The two sentences will run concur-rently and the men were declared unfit to possess firearms.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lt. Genl. Fannie Masemola, said he hopes this will serve as a deterrent to rob-bers who think they won't get caught.

STEENBOKPAN – The old hostel of Steen-bokpan Primary that was converted into housing units for low income people has be-come a bone of contention between learners at Lerekhureng Combined school and the mostly elderly residents of the units.

In January, Northern News reported that the ten families living in the hostels feared they would be left homeless if their hou- sing units were to be used as classrooms by Lerekhureng after the school was vandalised and suffered damage during rain storms. “I earn a small pension, and after covering my basic needs there is almost nothing left for me to live on,” Mariette Grobbelaar one of the elderly residents said at the time.

The families were moved into the old Steenbokpan primary school’s hostel when the school closed in the early eighties and has been home to about ten families.

The principal of Lerekhureng, Jacob Lamola, has put up a valiant effort to accom-modate his students without disrupting the people in the housing units. Meetings were held between community members, busi-nesses and the school and resulted in dona-tions of tables and other essential furniture, while the students were temporarily placed at Steenbokpan community hall.

During the community policing forum (CPF) meeting last Thursday, Nico Pienaar, constituency officer of the DA, said that he spoke to some of the elderly people living in the housing units and claimed that they were threatened and asked to leave their homes. “I have not been able to establish who made the threats but apparently some people approached the elderly resi-dents and told them to move their furniture because they

want to use the units as office space.”While the plight of the residents is un-

derstandable because of the high expenses of accommodation in Lephalale and their inability to pay for alternative housing the school is also in a huge predicament. Cur-rently, they have 320 learners and their classrooms are uninhabitable.

“I don’t want to withhold a proper edu-cation from anybody, but I also feel strongly that the current residents are entitled to a safe and secure place to stay,” Pienaar said.

Lofty Fourie, who chaired the CPF mee-ting, proposed that the community should get involved in upgrading the school thus ensuring that the elderly people can remain where they are while at the same time en-suring that the learners get a proper educa-tion.

A source at the Department of Educa-tion, who asked not to be named, said that they are in discussions with Eskom to fix some of the damage to the school. “We have also contacted Boikarabelo which will do-nate three mobile classrooms.”

The source also stated that the depart-ment wants to formalise tennure on the land on which the school is situated in order to build a new school. “We are still in discus-sions about this idea and I am not able to elaborate on this plan but in the long run a new school would be beneficial to the edu-cation of the students.”

No easy solution for Lerekhureng

LEPHALALE – The municipal-ity awarded six bursaries to students within the Lephalale municipal area on Tuesday. Two of the bursaries were funded by a partnership with Boikarabelo mine. During his opening speech, pastor Willem Papo, a local pastor, requested that other businesses in the area should also get involved with sponsoring learners. “We were only able to provide bursaries for six learners because of budgetary constraints, but if businesses in the area get involved we will be able to dramatically improve the skills and education of the youth in our area,” Papo said.

LEPHALALE – A Valentine’s day function at a guesthouse in Rooibos Crescent left some residents hot under the collar after the street was allegedly used for drag racing.

According to Lofty Fourie, who chaired the community policing forum(CPF) meeting last Thursday, the party kept on until 02:00 on the morning of 15 February. “Some of the neighbours phoned the police and were alleg-edly told that the guest house had permission for the party and the police could therefore do nothing about the noise.”

Sergeant Precious Munyai of the Lephala-le police said that this should not have been the case and that residents should request the name of the officer that they speak to in order for management to address the issue.

LEPHALALE – During a community policing forum (CPF) meeting last Thursday residents were warned that housebreaking incidents in the suburbs are on the increase.

Gompou street, Patrys street and the flats in the Church street area were named as ar-eas being targeted.

“Property crimes have increased by 11,9% compared to last year this time while contact related crimes like malicious damage to property have increased with

ing a complaint at the police station or tele-phonically:

- State your problem in a clear, direct and polite way – treat the officer as you would like to be treated.

- Ask for the name and rank of the person you are talking to.

- Ask for an Occurrence Book number as proof of your call and keep it in a safe place.

- If you feel that the officer you are talking to is not handling the matter correctly ask to speak to the shift commander or a senior officer.

- If you are still not satisfied contact the station commander – if he is not aware of the frustrations or poor service he can’t rectify it.

Housebreakings on increase11%,” sergeant Precious Munyai of the Lephalale police told the attendees of the meeting.

All other crimes showed a decrease of 17% while assaults and other contact crimes decreased with a commendable 63%.

“We are seeing an increase in shoplifting incidents in the mall and are appealing to the municipality to assist with cleaning up empty stands which criminals are using as hide outs,” Munyai said.

MOKOPANE – Residents are fed-up with the lack of service delivery at the Mogalakwena Municipality and some even advised other municipal consumers on Facebook to stop paying for services they are not receiving.

Despite the questionable reinstatement of municipal services at the Mogalakwena Municipality after its recent standstill due to alleged benchmarking, Northern News is unable to get any comment on the state of affairs from the municipality’s divisional head of communications, Malesela Selokela.

Selokela only mentioned that a council

meeting is being planned to resolve the issue.Residents are angry about the level of ser-

vice at the municipality and say they are not at all impressed with some on duty officials’ attitude towards consumers.

“I am so sick and tired of the ongoing protests in this country," one resident, who did not want to be named out of fear of in-timidation, said. Wherever my family and I go and even when we turn on our TV, we are guaranteed to be exposed to violence, strikes and protests over discontent of some or other mistreatment or dispute. Why do consum-ers have to fall short?” said a resident who doesn’t want his name to be mentioned.

MOKOPANE – The Thorny Bush Wildlife & Golf Estate development at the Kameel-doring Country Club is a first of a kind upmarket residential security golf estate in the Mokopane-Polokwane and is progress-ing briskly.

The long awaited 200ha estate located in a pristine bushveld environment incor-porating the existing Kameeldoring Country Club, golf course and associated amenities is in full swing of development.

“The focus of the development said Rob Hudson, Managing Director of Thorny Bush Estate developers Hayes Matkovich & Asso-ciates while taking Northern News at a brief site tour recently, is with a highly upmarket, gated, secure, residential estate but yet one that is more affordable (currently) than most other comparable gated estates in Limpopo and SA in general.”

Only 60 km from Polokwane an oasis exists where families can still enjoy the great outdoors and wildlife without having to leave their own front yards.

The estate distinguishes itself from other golf estates in the Limpopo Province in that the development is focused on primary resi-dential i.e. family living and not the second-ary lifestyle or holiday market.

The fact that 120 units have been sold, of which 90 have already been trans-ferred since the proclamation of the town-ship in September last year, with very little marketing done, is a clear indication of the investment value packed into this estate.

Hudson explains that Mokopane has shown consistent growth despite the reces-sion over the past few years, “The town is experiencing massive investment from the platinum mines in the area and plans for a major water pipe line is underway to bring more water, and with it more growth, to the town.”

The estate comprises four invest-ment options namely Golf Course fac-ing erven from R650 000, Village erven from R450 000, larger eco-stands of 4000 square meters starting from R10250 000, and the Mature Lifestyle offerings for 50’s and older which will be released during 2017 as part of phase 3 of the develop-ment, from approximately R350 000.

Thorny Bush will be completely secu-rity fenced with 24-hour access control, providing security but more importantly, safety of mind, allowing residents to relax and enjoy the environment. All fences will be fitted with sensors to alert guards on duty of any breach.

The estate incorporates Kameeldoring Country Club and all its amenities, with a boutique hotel planned for the future. The estate is situated within walking distance of the Mokopane’s other sports clubs. It forms part of wildlife conservancy of over 300 ha

to which residents will have full access for walking, mountain biking and fishing in the Nyl River.

A local private school will soon open their new high school campus right across from the entrance of the estate and learners will be able to bike, of golf cart, to school and back. “We offer children the opportunity to be children again. We want to keep them out of the streets and the shopping malls and keep them in the bush,” says Hudson.

The estate encourages no pets and no fences, but since the focus is on families, small dogs will be allowed as long as they are behind specified fences and on a leash otherwise.

Christine McGrath, Principal of Seeff Mokopane who is marketing Thorny Bush Estate, says this is the investment opportu-nity of a lifetime. The architectural theme is broadly described as ‘contemporary Bush-veld’ and focuses on home designs that use natural materials, textures and colour schemes to blend with the natural Kameel-doring Bushveld.

“We offer a special project management service for investors who don’t want to deal with builders, architects and financing at an all inclusive costing”. This makes developing your dream house on the estate a frustration free exercise with preparation building plans being and building loans facilitated, competi-tive costing being sourced from approved builders, and project management during the actual construction phase.

Whether planning a higher quality of life or simply grabbing an investment opportunity too good to miss, Thorny Bush Estate offers everything a buyer can dream of and more.

Three new aspirant winemakers have been given the rare opportunity of honing their skills working side by side with some of the country’s finest masters of their craft as part of the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme.

This mentorship programme aims at developing and empowering talented young Protégés to become future winemakers and viticulturists of excellence.

This year’s intake of three new interns brings to 20 the total number of Protégés who have participated in the programme since its inception in 2006. Under the men-torship of members of the Guild and the patronage of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust, a world of oppor-tunity in the wine industry will open up for these three graduates of Elsenburg Agricul-tural College in Stellenbosch.

Cape Winemakers Guild kick starts 2016 with three new Protégés

Peter Vakele of Khayelitsha in Cape Town is spending his first year at Ernie Els Wines under the watchful eye of Louis Strydom, chairman of the Nedbank Cape Winemak-ers Guild Development Trust. Fellow Protégé Sydney Mello, who comes all the way from Mahwelereng in Limpopo, is working with veteran winemaker, Neil Ellis.

The third new addition to the programme is Maryna Huysamen of Vredendal in the West Coast, who joins David Nieuwoudt at Cederberg Cellars.

For Sydney Mello making wine is a rare opportunity to create something unique: “As a winemaker you get to impart a piece of yourself into the wine. It becomes a reflec-tion of you as a person and is a very personal process, given all the blood, sweat and tears including the long hours we put in as wine-makers.”

Sydney Mello, Maryna Huysamen and David Nieuwoudt.

South Africa is a dangerous country to live in and unfortunately it seems according to many recent newspaper reports, also to play in. I am saddened by so many reports of anglers attacked, mugged, robbed or murdered while fishing.

Recently Polokwane lost a beloved resident when he was murdered while fish-ing for tilapia in a small stream close to town. Elsewhere within the same week an off-duty policeman was murdered while-camped next to a dam fishing for carp. As reports of these kinds of incidents escalate, we as anglers need to sit down and take stock of the situation.

Fishing with Christie

Angler safety - protect yourself from violent crime

How important is one's life compared to the pleasures of fishing? Can we live without time on or next to the water, pursuing our passion for fishing? What can we do to im-prove the situation?

How can we ensure our safety while visit-

ing local dams, rivers or streams? If we want to continue fishing we have to apply certain measures!

~ First of all and most importantly, there is truth to the statement ‘SAFETY IN NUMBERS’. It is not safe to go fishing alone anymore. While alone one is vulnerable and a tempting target to any thug who may be in the vicinity. A larger group of anglers are a better deterrent than only one or two people. If you do not have many fishing friends, join a club and wait for club outings. If you can-not find several friends to join you for a day on or next to the water - do not go! It is not worth the risk.

~ Do your homework. PROPER PREPA-RATION is vital when planning a fishing trip. Most importantly, find out as much as you can about the area you plan on visiting. Where is the dam situated? Is it isolated, within town limits or rural settle-ments? Contact the local authorities and ask for recent crime reports. Check fishing forums and ask for any relevant information regarding the dam you plan to visit. Avoid dams or rivers where crime has become an everyday occurrence. It is hard to predict when petty crime may escalate to violent

crime. With more and more people ad-dicted to dangerous drugs such as crack, tik and nyaope you find more desperate addicts hunting for easy targets to provide their next fix.

~ Learn to defend yourself. SELF-DEFENSE has saved more than one person from the worst consequences of an attack BUT you also need to try to read the situa-tion and decide whether attack is your best option. If someone tries to rob you, give up your property—don’t give up your life. Sometimes all the attacker wants is your phone, wallet, car, etc. and once you calmly hand over he is happy to leave you alone. Are you looking into a hungry man’s eyes or the eyes of a person intent on murder and destruction? I believe this is where instinct kicks in and your sixth sense makes the choice. Trust your instincts.

~ Notify your next of kin or friends of your destination, departure and return dates / times. CHECK IN with them every hour or so. It is better to be over-cautious and have a quicker emergency response time should things go wrong.

~ If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, leave!!
