Nowadays it has become one of the important historical humanitarian architectures. Nowadays, the Yangmingshan National Park administration authorities provide services such as travel information, video presentations, guides, as well as displays. Yulu Historical Trail_ The path that foretold the story of our ancestor The Yulu historical trail, also known as Jinbaoli Path, is approximately a 30 km Nearby Attractions Nearby Attractions Lion’s Head Mountain rises 496 meters at the boundary between Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, and is said to resemble the head of a lion. Buddhists long ago built temples into the natural caves that dot the mountainside (two century-old temples, Yuangguang Temple and Cyuanhua Hall, are said to have been the first), making this a revered place of pilgrimage for devotees. Residents of the surrounding areas include Hakka and Hoklo Taiwanese, as well as the Saisiat and Atayal indigenous peoples. The predominant culture is Hakka. Every two years the local Saisiats organize a “Sacrifice to the Short Spirits”, one of Taiwan’s quaintest and most interesting indigenous festivals. The area is also known for its fruit orchards and tea plantations. Nearby Beipu and Emei produce the famous Oriental Beauty tea, tea-cooked eggs, and persimmon cakes; Sanwan is famous for its pears, and Nanjhuang for its bamboo shoots and orchids. This old temple is an integral part of the lives of Keelung’s people, and the food stalls that have sprung up around it have become a favor- ite destination for gourmands. All kinds of local snacks are offered here, including oyster omelets, tempura, “potside stickers,” and shaved ice. It was opened as an international port in 1858, the first in northern Taiwan. Its role as a busy seaport has long faded, but on its old streets you can still see remnants of those prosperous days, including buildings in the Western, Southern Fujianese, and Japanese style, giving the streets a rich flavor of the past. On the old streets you can also savor such local delicacies as fish balls, “iron” eggs, and sour plum drink, and restaurants offer fresh, inexpensive seafood. Danshui is on the mouth of the Danshui River, and visitors come to enjoy mountain and river scenery. Thanks to the Danshui MRT line, the town is extremely easy to reach from Taipei . Fisherman’s Wharf Located on the right side of the mouth of the Danshui River, this relatively new attraction features a boardwalk, riverbank coffee shops, and a large harbor park. The mouth of the harbor is spanned by a white “Lovers’ Bridge,” offering a new place to enjoy the famous sunset of Danshui. Fort San Domingo This first-grade historic site is more than 300 years old, and was first built by the Spanish in 1629, then occupied and rebuilt by the Dutch. The structure is made of red brick, giving it a sort of medieval European ambience. In 1867 it was leased to the British, who used it as a consulate and built a residence which today serves as a gallery for the display of old artifacts and photographs. Nearby is the Huwei Fortress, Oxford College, and a whole complex of buildings related to the early Canadian missionary Dr. George Mackay. Your first time in a high-temperature pool should last no more then 10 munutes; and you should take a rest every 15 minutes. When getting out of the pool, raise your body slowly to avoid dizziness or fainting. Take a 30-minute post-bath rest, and drink lots of water. The hot-spring residue left on your skin after a bath will be absorbed by your skin, so all you need to do is to wipe away the water gently. Window on ChinaThis is a wonderland of

miniature models of buildings and other structures from China and other countries, all meticulously built on a 1/25 scale, that bring all the world within your vision. Window on China also includes an amusement park in which one of the main attractions is the Tornado, which reaches 24 meter high and is the first triple 360-degree multiple-switch ride in Asia-it really makes you feel like you’ve been swept up in a tornado.

Leofoo VillageThis theme park, located in Guansi Town, Hsinchu County, is a multi-purpose

theme park developed out of what was originally a safari park. Its rides include a U-shaped suspended-track spiral roller coaster that is the first of its kind in Asia and second in the world. It also has one of the world’s four largest “pirate ship” rides, 18.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, that swings to the height of an eight-story building. Another feature is Southeast Asia’s biggest animal education park, Monkey Garden.

BeipuThis is one of the earliest Hakka settlements in Taiwan, and its old streets

contain well-preserved historic buildings from the distant past. Tianshuei Hall is the most imposing residence left from those days, and along with the Jinguangfu Official Residence it is listed as a Hsinchu first-grade historical site. The spiritual center of the settlement, Citian Temple, is a third-grade historical site. Beipu also boasts cold

mineral springs, with weak alkaline carbonic acid water. The temperature varies from 15℃ in summer to about 10℃ in winter. There is no better way to sooth away the aches and worries than getting soak in this spring water.

Neiwan Scenic AreaNeiwan is the terminal station of one of the three branch railways in Taiwan.

This branch is 27.7 kilometers long and runs through areas of beautiful scenery. The old-type Hesing Station sports a turntable that is rarely seen today. The development of the Neiwan area owes much to the coal-mining and forestry industries, as well as the railway. The town is on the upper reaches of the Toucian River, whose broad waters nourish a kind of fish that has become a local delicacy. The center of religion here is Guangji Temple, which contains a number of deities that symbolize the harmonious co-existence of the different groups that make up the local population. This is a small Hakka town, where visitors can enjoy distinctive Hakka cuisine.

Shimen Reservoir Scenic Area

This reservoir, nestled in the valley of the Dahan River in Longtan Township, Taoyuan County, contains 680,000 cubic meters of water backed up by a dam that rises 135 meters. From the dam you can view most of the surface of the reservoir; you can go boating on the lake, and you can direct your boat toward Amuping for camping or barbecuing. The area is also the site of a couple of amusement parks. The culinary specialty of lake-side restaurants is fresh fish prepared at least eight ways. The plump, suc-culent fish that flourish in the clean water of the lake have become a special local attraction.

National Scenic Area

Jiufen and JinguashiJiufen is an old gold-mining town built on a steep mountain slope. It retains much

of its quaint traditional flavor, attracting countless numbers of artists, film-makers, and photographers to take advantage of its unique scenery. “A City of Sadness”, a film by prominent director Hou Hsiao-hsien, was shot here. Visitors can wander the precipitous old streets of the town and recapture some of the flavor of a simpler past. They can also savor local delicacies such as taro balls. After sunset, this is a favorite place for enjoying a cup of tea and watching the lights of fishing boats on the distant sea.

Jinguashi, the rustic little town, was once a bustling cop-per-and-gold mine community, and it still retains a number of cultural sites along with allur-ing scenery-the old mines, the twin-color sea formed by runoff from mine sediments, a winding mountain road, a Gold Eco-logical Park, and old Japanese-style houses. The gold park and abandoned mines, along with surrounding residential areas, form Taiwan’s first “living mu-seum.” Other sites of historical interest here include a Shinto shrine, a memorial to British prisoners of war (this was once a Japanese prison camp), and a 13-level ore processing plant.

Shifenliao Scenic Area

Shifenliao is located in northeastern Taiwan on a tribu-tary of the Keelung River, and is best known for its spec-tacular waterfall. Erosion by the Keelung River and the nature of the terrain here have created numerous faults, odd stone formations, and cascades-including Shihfenliao Waterfall, the greatest curtain waterfall in Taiwan. Besides sightseeing, the most popular activity at nearby Pingxi is the releasing of “sky lanterns” at the time of the Lantern Festival every year.

Chilan Forest Recreation Area

This recreation area is situated on the Yilan-Lishan branch of the Central Cross-Island Highway, and is covered mainly with reforested cyrpto-meria trees. The area features a cottage once used by the late President Chiang Kai-shek, a flower and tree appreciation area, walkways among flowering cherries and peaches, a “green shower” trail, and “Little Tarzan” physical challenge area. The most prominent local product is monkey-head mushrooms. The recreation area also boasts Yilan’s only stand of giant red cypress trees, thousands of years old; each tree is named for a person from Chinese history who lived at about the time of its germination: Confucius, Tang Dynasty Emperor Tai-zong, Liou Zong-yuan, and Wang Jhao-jyun, among others.

Taipingshan National Forest Recreation AreaTaipingshan is located in Yilan County’s Datong Township and covers more than

12,000 hectares, much of which is forested with red and yellow cypress. It was once one of Taiwan’s three biggest logging areas. The recreation area encompasses the Renze Hot Springs, Primeval Forest Park, Mt. Duli Wildlife Reserve, and Cuifeng Lake. This is a favorite destination for tourists to enjoy forest scenery as well as spectacular sunrises, seas of clouds, and (in winter) snowscapes.

Fushan Botanical GardenThis is the biggest botanical garden in Asia, covering 1,096.5 hectares. In addition to

Because of the intensive geothermal activity here the minerals carried by the water of the different hot-spring areas is also different. Each area has its own characteristic minerals, water temperature, and therapeutic effect. The water of Lengshuikeng, which is relatively cool is said to help those who suffer from an excess of uric acid, inflammation of the bladder, and similar ailments, however, people should not bathe in this water.

Sihhuangping Hot SpringsThese acidic sulfate spring are located in Wanli District of New Taipei City, and the temperature is from 40℃ to 99℃. The water is not suitable for drinking. The Sihhuangping Hot Springs are located about 500 meters southeast from Tianlai, approximately 2.1 kilometers off the Yangmingshan-Jinshan Highway. Because the water’s composition and temperature are similar to those of Gengzihping, it is surmised that both springs may arise from the same geothermal source. The springs are distributed along a distance of 150 meters, where the fumaroles, mud pools, and bubbling hot water create a most impressive scene.

Beitou and Mt. Shamao Hot Springs

The sulfur spring water here emerges at 52℃ to 75℃. It is not suitable for drinking. The hot springs of Beitou are encompassed by Mt. Shamao, Mt. Datun, and Mt. Cising, and emit sulfuric steam all year round. For hot-spring aficionados, Beitou is a Mecca that cannot be missed. This area provides both hot and cold springs, and is a favorite for mineral-spring bathers--especially at night. The New Beitou Park is situated just in front of the New Beitou MRT Station, and in the nearby drainage channels you can roll up your trousers and soak your feet directly in rela-tively cool hot-spring water. Just up the road you can visit the Beitou Hot-spring Museum, a rebuilt Japanese-era bathhouse that was once the biggest and most famous in Taiwan. The museum contains artifacts and photographs that explain the development of hot springs in Taiwan, as well as the original public bathing pools. There are also multimedia presentations that introduce the hot springs in Beitou.

Jinshan Hot Springs

These hot springs, located in Jinshan and Wanli District of New Taipei City, produce carbonic acid water at 45℃ to 86℃ The springs are good for drinking and bathing. These hot springs arise in the Datun geothermal zone, like those of Yangmingshan, and are the northernmost hot springs in Taiwan. While other hot-spring areas are lucky to have two types of water, Jinshan provides four: oceanic sandy, sulfuric, carbonic acid, and iron. Hot-spring hotels have sprung up in the Jinshan area in recent years, making it a haven for visitors who enjoy the variety of water types.

Wulai Hot SpringsThese hot springs, in Wulai District of New Taipei City, produce alkaline carbonic acid water at 55℃ to 80℃. The water is suitable for drinking. The hot springs of Wulai produce mineral water in abundance and were found long ago; the very name Wulai, in fact, is said to have come from the Atayal aborigine word for “hot springs.” The water is clear, colorless, and odorless. Wulai boasts the largest free-of-charge hot-spring area in Taiwan. It is especially popular in early spring, when red cherry blossoms fill the mountainsides so that visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery as they soak in the hot springs and bask in the romance of the Atayal aborigines.

Beipu Cold SpringsThese cold springs in Beipu Township, Hsinchu County, produce alkaline carbonic acid water at 10℃ to 15℃. The water is not for drinking. The clear waters of the Daping River in Waiping Village of Beipu Township flow through green hilly country that offers a rich variety of beautiful scenery, with water plunging over dams adding a special attraction to the area. The water of the Beipu Hot Springs is a bit alkaline, and draws a large number of visitors to enjoy and relax.

Jiaoxi Hot SpringsLocated in Jiaoxi, Yilan County, these sodium carbonate springs are 58℃. Their water is also suitable for drinking in small amounts. The spring water here contains a variety of minerals, including sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and carbonic acid. Flatland hot springs are rare in Taiwan. The water is clear and odorless, and leaves the skin smooth with no trace of stickiness. Its rich mineral content makes it healthy for bathing and, after processing, for drinking. The hot spring district covers a 1.2-kilometer area around the railway station, with nearly 100 hotels and bathhouses.

Suao Cold SpringsLocated in Suao, Yilan County, these carbonic acid cold springs flow from the earth at under 22℃. Naturally carbonated water is hardly found anyplace else in the world, with the exception of Venice. You will feel cold when you first immerse yourself in this water, but your body will heat up in five minutes. In early days the water from these springs was used to make drinking soda, and today it is still used in cooking a special product of Suao, mutton stew.

Renze Hot SpringsThese springs are located in Datong Township, Yilan County (they are actually part of the Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area) and produce calcium carbonate water at 95℃. The colorless, odorless water leaves the skin smooth and lustrous. After (or before) bathing, visi-tors can enjoy a “green shower” and spot birds along the nearby forest trail. Danshui

Danshui Old StreetsDanshu i i s an i n t ense l y

historic town.

Fisherman’s WharfLocated on the right side of the mouth of the Danshui River, this relatively new

attraction features a boardwalk, riverbank coffee shops, and a large harbor park. The mouth of the harbor is spanned by a white “Lovers’ Bridge,” offering a new place to enjoy the famous sunset of Danshui.

Fort San DomingoThis first-grade historic site is more than 300 years old, and was first built by

the Spanish in 1629, then occupied and rebuilt by the Dutch.
