Our General Member-ship Meeting was held on Sunday, November 2, 2008 with 27 members present. President Ken Kamiya conducted the meeting with Yuko Ya-mauchi, Aiko Tokunaga and Ken Kamiya as the Inspector Generals. Eve-ryone received a packet of annual reports from the various Committees. Al-though there were 7 nomi-nations from the floor for

the 7 Board of Directors vacancies, all of them de-clined the nominations. Therefore, it was decided to vote on the slate of 7 nomi-nees from the Nominating Committee. Congratula-tions to the 7 new Board Members: Masanobu Ajifu, Tomiko Akamine, Sachiko Arakaki, Katsuko Arakawa, Dan Ashimine, Naomi En-dow and Kimiko Goya for 2 year term. Nominations for Presi-

dent were Chogi Higa, Aiko Tokunaga (she declined) and Ken Kamiya. The count by secret ballot were 19 votes for Chogi and 7 votes for Ken. Congratula-tions to OAA’s new Presi-dent for 2009 - 2010, Chogi Higa. In his acceptance speech, Chogi thanked eve-ryone for the vote of confi-dence and he will accept the challenge with pride in his Okinawan heritage and the OAA. M.C. Ken made an-

nouncements of future events before “yuntaku” time during the refresh-ments.

OAA 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2009! by Naomi Endow

Yes, we have a new logo to commemorate our 100th year, since the founding of the OAA. Let’s all celebrate together and plan to attend the festivities slated for 2009. We encourage

young people to participate in the events and show their support! The 100th year’s motto: Ichi nu Ichimadin – “From Generation to Genera-tion” will be our collective chant as we celebrate our longevity and look expec-tantly to the future. The first event will be the OAA 100th Anniversary New Year’s Party on Sun-day, January 18, 2009. The details are given in the en-closed insert, with a reserva-tion form for the luncheon.

The major events of the year will be held on the weekend of August 28 (Friday) to Au-gust 30 (Sunday), 2009. Spe-cial guest entertainers from Okinawa will be performing on August 28 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Cen-ter. On August 29, a memo-rial service and the Okina-wan Cultural Festival will be held at the Noguchi Plaza in front of the Japanese Ameri-can Theatre. The OAA 100th Anniversary Banquet (luncheon) will be held on

August 30 at the Torrance Mar-riott Hotel. More details will be forthcoming. We will also keep you posted of additional events planned for 2009 in celebration of the 100th. The proceeds from the 2009 OAA’s annual events, such as the Geino-bu’s “Utayabira Wuduyabira” on May 24 and the bazaar in Octo-ber will help to fund the 100th Anniversary activities, so please continue to support and attend these events. On September 14, 2008, we had a record attendance of 150 people at our annual Keiro Kansha no Hi Party in the Gardena Valley JCI Hall. Our usage of the hall was possible because of our members who helped in the Andagi Booth at the JCI Carnival. Everyone enjoyed the spacious room and the high special stage. Among the sixty-two 80+ seniors honored that day, there were seven 90+ seniors who exemplify the trait of long life in Okinawans. They received free obento and their special Kohaku manju. Edward Tamae (age 95) led everyone in Kampai. “Okage sama de.” Ever yo ne enjo yed the “maasan” homemade togan soup by Itsumi Jacomo with their obento. Special recognition was the presentation of 2008 OAA Open House Honoree Harold Kameya who with his wife, Ellen were in Brazil at the time of the 9th Anniversary presen-tation. Certificates of Com-mendations from the OAA, City of Gardena and the State of California were presented to Harold for his many signs he has donated to our buildings, our Presidents’ and Fujinbu Chairpersons’ Photo Exhibits,

Donors’ Wall and the Honor-ees’ Wall of Fame plus the booth signs for our Bazaar. Congratulations Harold Kameya! Entertainment by the talented youth in honor of our 80+ seniors honorees was provided by Kylie Nakada dancing the hula, Justin, Hailie & Kayne Toyosato (Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko) performing to the rhythmic beat on their drums, Megan Yamanaka, Kylie Nakada & Catherine Goya (Teruya So-kyoku Kenkyukai) played koto while Kyo Yohena & Miyo Ajifu (Tamagusuku-ryu Kansenkai) danced with fans. Ippee Nifee Deebiru! Birthday celebrations were held for all those born in July through December with a photo around the birthday cake and singing “Happy Birthday” song to them. Eve-ryone enjoyed the delicious cake for dessert. Bingo win-ners went home happy with their prizes. The secret of Longevity is “Hara Hachi Bu” which means to only eat until you are 80% full. So during this holiday season, “remember 80%!”

During this holiday season, the Okinawa Association of America, Inc. (OAA) has many reasons to be thankful! OAA is thankful for the 60 or so dedicated volunteers who come out throughout the year--some monthly and weekly--to the OAA to help us to clean, to do mailings, to maintain the li-brary. and to manage the OAA. OAA is thankful for the extremely generous donors who continue to make contributions to the Building fund, the OAA High School Scholarship fund, our general fund as well as goods and special library book donations.

OAA Gives Thanks... OAA is thankful for the 780+ new and returning mem-bers who celebrate the Okinawan culture, arts, heritage, language and more! OAA is thankful for the each committee and the work that they do. OAA is thankful for the friendships we have with other Okinawa associations in the US and abroad. OAA is thankful for all the pioneers and their hard work, their vision, and legacy that bring us to the eve of our Centennial Celebration in 2009! In particular, as the sole paid staff, I am person-ally humbled by the dedication of those I work with and am blessed for the friendships I've gained for being here. Thank you, muchas gracias, and ippee kafuushi! --Yuko Yamauchi (on behalf of OAA)

August 8, 2009. Our 2 craft classes will be on May 16, 2009 with Setsuko Fujimoto and November 14, 2009. We’re planning a health lec-ture in June and a field trip to see the Palm Springs Follies.

Our last craft class was led by Aiko Tome who showed us how to make the beautiful beaded iris. Then all of us proudly held our own beaded iris in a group photo (see below). On October 29, 2008, we held our Fujinbu Planning Meeting to plan for 2009 activi-ties. Our Shinbokukai will be on Sunday, March 1, 2009. Our PALA In-dian Casino Fund-raiser will be on Thursday, February 5, 2009 with the proceeds going to the 100th Anniver-sary budget. Our 2 cooking classes will be on April 11, 2009 with Nancy Niijima and

OAA Bazaar is our biggest fundraiser of the year! On Sunday, October 7, 2008, OAA held its annual Bazaar. Volunteers came Saturday to prepare the meat and cabbage and make final preparations. Then on Sunday, volunteers came early to set up the tents for the many booths to sell food: teri-beef & chicken bento, andagi, yasai tempura, baked goods, nantu & mochi, can drinks, shave ice and taco rice (new this year). The ever-popular delicious Okinawa soba was a big seller. The teri-beef & chicken bento was a

sell-out - some people bought extra for dinner. Other booths sold OAA merchandise, video-tapes, original greetings cards with Uchinaguchi words printed on them, rummage sale and creative homemade crafts for those early Christmas shop-pers. Many went home with fresh vegetables and plants. The Children’s Tent was popular with face-painting, crafts, Habu-hunt, fishing and basketball hoop games with prizes for everyone. The entertainment was very well received with the ever-popular Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko, karate with energetic precision by the Okinawa Shorin-ryu Ma-tsubayashi Karatedo Kobudo Association and “Andagi”, a talented group of young san-shin players announcing their Uta-Sanshin Circle meetings. The grand prize of the

raffle was a beautiful bonsai plant, skillfully designed by Gordon Tengan (a protégé of Frank Goya) and his friend, Hank Sugimoto. With lots of great raffle prizes generously donated by OAA members and friends, many lucky win-ners went home happy. Our annual Bazaar would not be possible without the

dedicated volunteers of our members and friends who donated their time, talents and expenses. “Ippee Nifee Dee-biru” to all of you for your dedicated efforts! A special thanks to Masanobu Ajifu, chair of this year’s successful bazaar.

OAA took part in the first homestay program organized by the Okinawa prefectural government (OPG) this past summer from July 23 – Au-gust 2, 2008. Six students and one chaperone visited us here in LA while three fami-lies and several OAA mem-bers really stepped up to make this a memorable and successful program.

Accompanied by chaper-one Satsuki Kinjo, the six students were Miki Kinjo (Uruma), Mizuki Kinjo (Nago), Atsuki Higa (Shuri), Hoshino Miyagi (Nago), Rie Sakumoto (Naha), and Ha-yato Takase (Zamami). First of all, OAA cannot thank enough the three host families: Richard and

Marilyn La Roche and grand-daughter Kimi; Dennis and Joan Oshiro; and Mrs. Tsuguyo Yasutomi and It-sumi Jacomo. Over 1000 miles were logged by the dedicated host families! Also contributing to the success was the turnout of our youth mem-bers who really

reached out and became in-volved. There are too many names to recount, but OAA was extremely proud and very appreciative for all the effort! Please be on the lookout for future host family and youth exchange opportunities!

Second place went to the Okinawa C Team. Both teams consist of mostly South American Uchinanchu. From right: Miyuki Oyakawa, Zensho Kami-
