2.8 Het originele bestand wordt ook in zijn oorspronkelijke formaat bewaard Ook al is een bestandsformaat verouderd, toch is het belangrijk dit te bewaren, bijvoorbeeld omdat in de toekomst nieuwe technologie beschikbaar komt om dit toch leesbaar te maken (cf. emulatie) of omdat er een beter archiveringsformaat beschikbaar is. Het beschikbaar houden van het oorspronkelijk formaat verhoogt ook de betrouwbaarheid van het edepot.
