October 2014 message from the editor
Hello, hello! Thank you for opening up the newsletter for the
month of October. September was really busy for our club and I
hope that you get to enjoy the events that we did through the
snapshots in this newsletter. If you are interested in graphic design,
writing articles, or you want to help the newsletter continue to
improve, please let me know! I would love to see more people get
involved with making the newsletter. All creative and non-creative
people are welcome to get involved! Enjoy October and be sure to
write and submit articles for the events that you attend.
Yours in service,
Alyssa Yocom, Newsletter Editor
message from the president Hello Everyone! It’s October, which means we’re officially halfway through the 2014-2015 administrative year! For all of our new members, I hope you’ve been enjoying the club and our events thus far and I hope that I continue to see you at our upcoming events for the rest of the semester, including but not limited to: Murder Mystery, New Member Installation Banquet, The Biggest Little Winter Wonderland, and more! For our returning members, please continue on making our new members feel welcome and involved in the club and thank you for always putting in the time to make it to our events and meetings, despite your increasing course loads, work schedules, and other obligations. As mentioned at a few prior meetings, our theme this year is All Around the World and our tagline is Service: The 8th Wonder of the World. Consider me your Navigator as we continue to reach new destinations and create new experiences and memories together! Our travels this month will take us to Walnut Creek, CA, a city in the semi-sovereign division of Golden Gate. The denizens of Golden Gate have opened their homes and hearts to visiting foreigners from Sunset, Central Coast, and our very own Capital Division! If you are interested in meeting these strange but amicable people, please sign up for CKI North, which will take place on October 18th That’s it from me for now – please enjoy this month’s issue of The Full Moon! Sincerely, Aldrin M. Santamaria

October 2014
Whether it is service to our school, our home, or our
community, Circle K members are always rooted in the
service of others. As one of our most emphasized tenets, we strongly believe that service
gives us the chance to make a lasting impact in this world.
SERVICE.
Did you know that Circle K is an
International organization? Within our
organization, there are literally thousands
of leadership opportunities! We focus on building individual people into strong service
leaders and they have the chance for professional development as they explore more
leadership opportunities.
LEADERSHIP.
Circle K members are some of the best
people that you will ever meet. Along with
that comes the great and abundant
opportunities to network and make great friends. We are a network of individuals
connected by service and that is an incredibly strong bond.
FELLOWSHIP.

On September 4-7 the Great Reno Balloon Races came back to
town. Each year, this festival fills our skies with hot air balloons. The North
Valleys Kiwanis Club hosts a booth at the Balloon Races and they make
and sell pancakes and sausages to the community. Circle K joined the
Kiwanis Club of North Valleys to make these pancakes. We got up and
arrived at the Balloon Races by 5:00am. Alongside working with the North
Valleys Kiwanis Club, we were able to see Dawn Patrol and also see the
mass lift off of the hot air balloons. From flipping pancakes, to serving
people, and ensuring that everything was going smoothly the Kiwanis
Family served hundreds of people thousands of pancakes.
For many of our new members, this was their first service event and/
or their first time seeing the Great Reno Balloon Races. It was really neat
to be involved with this event because although the early mornings
certainly weren’t easy, it was great to see how much of an influence we
had on the Balloon Races. At this event, we had more than 50 Circle K
members volunteer, and we reached over 263 hours of service. Thank
you to those of you who attended this event!
“For me, this was my first time seeing the balloons and it was really cool to
do service and see them at the same time.” - Kanaha Shoji, member
“I loved being able to see the balloons for the first time, even if it meant
waking up at 4 in the morning.” - Cody Yamada, treasurer

AIR RACES AIR RACES
The second weekend of September was full of Air Race festivities and
the Kiwanis Family. Circle K members woke up really early once again
to work with the North Valleys Kiwanis Club to serve pancakes and we
also helped the Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis Club with their booths at the Air
Races. We sold memorabilia such as belt buckles, pins, lanyards, and
mouse pads to Air Races attendees. All of the profits from the sales go
to our sponsoring Kiwanis Club and eventually to charity.
Shout out to Daylan Ward, the MVP of the Air Races. This Circle K
member missed carpool and rode his bike 10 miles uphill just to make it
to the Air Races! Thank you, Daylan, for showing your dedication to
our club and to community service.

COLOR ME RAD On September 20th, members of Circle K volunteered for Color
Me Rad, which is an event we have been doing for the past few
years. Throughout this 5K race, athletes are blasted with all of the
colors of the rainbow. Because of its fun element, this race allows for
people of all kinds of athletic ability (from young children to older
folks) to enjoy a morning full of colorful physical activity.
Over 40 Circle K members volunteered for this event throughout
the day—from setting up the event in the morning all the way to
helping to tear everything down in the afternoon. There was a huge
variety of jobs available for members to do, including throwing the
color on runners, cheering at the finish line, selling merchandise, and
hydrating the athletes at the water station. This is a great event that
we always love to volunteer for. I think our collective enthusiasm for
this event is showcased by the fact that we racked up over 200
service hours for this event alone!
My favorite part of Color
Me Rad was getting to
know some of our new
members, juggling water
bottles, and yelling out,
‘Get yo wata here, ice
cold wata—just kidding,
it’s not cold.’

“On a cool September morning, as the sun barely shown
through the peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains, racers from all
around gathered to run the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Amidst all of the
insanity, Circle K was there to be the shining beacon of hope for the
event coordinator. Circle K took on the important task of refilling
pretzel cups, redistributing liquid hydration for the conservation of
the larger source, and handing out shiny disks of glory (aka medals)
to the victorious athletes of our time. And it was fun. We all had a
great time.”
-Miguel Henares, Vice President of Service
DOG FEST WALK N’ ROLL “Dog Fest was a great way
to help out the community
and get to walk our chubby
mascot Bubbles around
while getting to talk to
all the dog owners. It was
nice to see the benefit
this event has!”

CKI 101 & GAME NIGHT
CKI 101 & Game Night was hosted by our Membership Development and
Education Chair, Sarah Smith. She provided a quality workshop informing new
and returning members alike all about Circle K. From the Kiwanis Family to
how Circle K operates, to all of our crazy acronyms, Sarah made sure that
everyone in attendance became an expert on all things Circle K. Following
her workshop, she hosted a game night where teams and individuals
competed in Minute to Win It style games. By the end of the night, people
were fueled up, dizzy, and excited. Congratulations to Leslie for winning the
fluffy chair!
“CKI 101 was a night filled with excitement and learning. Everyone got to
become team players in Minute to Win It while also accepting great
challenges!”
- Sarah Smith, Membership Development & Education Chair
BOARD RETREAT September 20-21, your Circle K board met and spent many hours bonding
and attending informational workshops. The workshops were intended to
ensure that the board continues to grow in leadership so that the board is
always doing its best to serve you—the members! It was great to see the full
board together; as of September, our club’s board is now full! Please
welcome Hailey Brubaker as our new Fundraising Chair for the 2014-2015
Circle K Year!
Enjoy one of the jokes from this weekend: Matt Molloy VPA, “We clean the trail
that people walk on. I think they are called trailers or something” Hope that
you never are a hiker or a trailer with Matt.

BARBECUE SOCIAL After volunteering at Dog Fest, Circle K met at Rancho San Rafael to celebrate the
fall semester with a barbecue. This event was the perfect way to end a weekend
of service and it was also a great chance to get to know different members. There
are more barbecues coming up so be sure to check the sign up sheet!
GENERAL MEETINGS Who have you met at a general meeting? Each
meeting, there is a new chance to get to know members
of Circle K. We play tons of different ice breakers and
there are often times socials after meetings. The two
images to the left showcase just two of the ice breakers
we have done so far this year.
Check us out every Wednesday at 7:00pm in the
Graduate Student Lounge to meet new people and have
a great time!
We challenge you to sit by new people, introduce
yourself, and have fun making great new friends.
CAPITAL DCM “For the September Divisional Council Meeting, the
University of the Pacific hosted us at Boggs Community
Farm where we were able to do service in Stockton, CA.
We harvested lettuce to feed the animals and took out
weeds from various crops. This was my first time at a farm
and it was really interesting. I also had a nice time
meeting all of the other Circle K members from all over
Capital Division.”
- Aly Sicat, member
DCMs are great ways to get out of town, do service,
and meet people from all over California. One happens
every month so be sure to check the Sign Up Sheet in
the future!

kiwanis family INFORMATION ON THE KIWANIS FAMILY
Circle K is an international organization that
is sponsored by Kiwanis. Our sponsoring
Kiwanis Clubs provides us with support
throughout the year so that we may
achieve all of our service, leadership, and
fellowship goals. Thanks to the work that
the Reno Sunrisers Kiwanis Club and the
work that Kiwanis International does, Circle
K is able to develop college students into
service leaders.
Next month is Kiwanis Family month where
we get the chance to honor and recognize
all branches of the Kiwanis Family: Kiwanis,
Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and
Aktion Club.
You can get involved with the Kiwanis
Family by volunteering at K-Kids

International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund, utilizing the interest
earned, helps CKI clubs and districts serve the world through grants for service opportunities. The
fund is established through a portion of CKI member dues, direct donations, the donation of
Carthage-Pullman Society memberships and the donation of Sapphire Circle honoraries.
The Tomorrow Fund may sponsor projects that develop better reading skills among at-risk students
or anything of this sort. Our annual Single Service project is eligible to receiving funding from the
Tomorrow Fund as we target at-risk schools and provide children with a chance to participate in a

ASK CHARLIE HORSE:
MEET YOUR BOARD: ESMOND FUNG, SINGLE SERVICE
Howdy dear newsletter reader! My name is Esmond (that's Ezz-
Mund), and I'm honored to be serving UNR CKI as the 2014-15 Single
Service Chair. Just some quick life facts about me: 1. I was born in
Texas. 2. And raised in San Francisco/Las Vegas. 3. I am a second
year with an interest in Pre-Medicine. For those that are curious
about what my position is all about, I'll have you know that it
entails major event planning and a large-scale service event
(that'll happen on Dec. 6th -cough- you should attend) yay! When
I'm not reading up for a test or frantically planning committee
meetings, you can catch me at Lombardi attempting to break a
squat pr (meathead lingo) or at Costco ferociously gobbling up a
pizza that could feed a family of 5. That's all you need to know
about me, but I bet there's so much more that I could learn about
you, so come on by and don't be shy!
P.S. If you haven’t already, join CKI officially by paying dues!
Our “Ask Charlie Horse” column is here for you to ask all of your questions! You can ask about Circle K, life, or anything else! Charlie is here to help you with all the wonders and pains that life may bring your way. Submit your questions via the Google Form posted on the Sign Up Sheet.
Dear Charlie Horse, Do blind people dream? Sincerely, I. Spy-Dreams Dear Mr. Dreams, As I don’t know whether you’re asking whether people born blind can dream or people who become blind can dream, I’ll answer from the latter side. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, blind people CAN dream. Their dreams do differ though from normal people where their dreams might include more sounds than normal people, but this does not mean that their dreams are any less creative. If you would like to, Helen Keller also addresses dreams in her book, The Story of my Life.
Dear Charlie Horse, Why do “overlook” and “oversee” mean
two different things? Sincerely, I. Cantsee Dear Mr. Cantsee, If we look at the definition of look vs. see, we can put a proper difference between the two:
See (v.)- to perceive with the eyes, look at. Look (v.)- to turn’s one eyes toward something
or some direction in order to see. (Source: Random House Dictionary,
dictionary.com)
If we look at the definition of see, the information is already being filtered and analyzed through the orbital sockets. Matching the definition of “oversee”, we can use that in context where the person overseeing a herd of my family is keeping them safe, because he can “see” them. On the other hand, a person who is looking, still requires the action of adjusting their rods and cones towards an object or matter. In this context then, a rancher who “overlooks” my family will miss the fact that they were already plotting their escape back into the wild hills, never to be herded again.
