Insights on the Torah By Haham Amram Assayag äøåúä ìò úåðåéòø
Question: It seems that the holy day of Shabuot is called by different names,
what are they and why?
Answer:
Hag Hashabuot: The holy day of the weeks –named for being the holy day toward which the seven weeks
of the Omer are counted. The Torah does not indicate the exact date, except by stating that it is the fiftieth day
of the counting which begins of Pesah. Rebbi Chaim offers a new interpretation to this name indicating that
Shabuot also means oaths (the plural of Shabua). It is in this holy day that Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and the Jewish
nation made a mutual oath through the Torah to an eternal commitment of father to sons and sons to father.
Yom Habikurim: The day of the first fruit. - On this day of Shabuot, a special offering was brought through
which began all the offerings of the new product of the land specifically the bikurim, the first fruit of every tree,
which was marked when it began to blossom and upon maturing what was brought to the Bet Hamikdash.
Hag Hakatzir: The holy day of the harvest –Shabuot marks the season of harvest, which ends with the harvest of
wheat, the last to mature. On Shabuot an offering of wheat was brought to the Bet Hamikdash.
Atzeret: Word used to denote the end of a holy day considering Shabout the end of Pesah, equally so as Shemi-
ni Atzeret is the end of Sucot.
Gem of the Week "People look at Heaven and
wonder what happens there. They should rather wonder what goes on inside them-
selves -- and learn the truth of what they feel."
Synagogue News
Rabbi Azoulay: This week we continued studying the Ve'emuna
prayer and the Hashkivenu prayer that we recite during Arvit. -
In Hashkivenu we say "May You, Hashem, save us for the honor
of Your name". What does this mean?, Why should we be saved
because of Hashems honor? The answer is: It is known world-
wide that we are the chosen nation. Therefore our responsibility
is great because acting the wrong way reflects not only on the
person but on the entire nation. Therefore, if the Jewish nation
is downtrodden and low in the eyes of the other nations, then
it's a reflection on G-d. The nations ask themselves: How can it
be that this chosen nation is so low and hated by others?,
Therefore what type of a G-d do they have?. In response to this
we ask Hashem to redeem us, to bring us the Mashiach and the
Bet HaMikdash so that it will be clear to all how great You are.
To life Hashems name on the highest pedestal in the eyes of
all. That is what we are asking for here. - In Hashkivenu we ask
Hashem to "remove the Satan from in front of us and from be-
hind us". What does this mean?, We understand in front of us,
because the Satan (Yetzer Hara) is always a step ahead of us
trying to make us fall into his traps and cause us to sin. But
what is he doing behind us? We know that once one does a
Mitzva, it is complete and can never be taken away from him.
He will receive reward for that Mitzva no matter what. There is
one exception. If one chas ve'shalom regrets doing a Mitzva,
then that Mitzva is taken from him. One therefore should never
say things like "I knew I shouldn't have gone to shul today, I
missed the big game by going" or "Why did I give that person
Tzedaka, now I have to go to the ATM again and take out more
money!". After we have completed a Mitzva, the Yetzer Hara still
lingers behind us, hoping and trying to cause us to regret doing
the Mitzva. We must be vigilant and not fall into his traps. - May
we soon see the coming of Mashiach and the eradication of the
Yetzer Hara once and for all. Amen.
Rabbi Kadoch: Everybody loves a blessing. We love it more
when they come in packages. This week's parasha is one of two
sections in the Torah which describe blessings in great detail
(the other being Parashat Ki Tavo). The prerequisite for beracha
is simple... אם בחוקותי תלכו"If you walk with my statutes." A father
blesses his child when he sees his son/daughter fulfill what's
expected of him/her. The Jewish people in the eyes of God are
no different. If we do what we're supposed to do, then it's bless-
ing we shall receive.
The main rewards we receive when all of Klal Yisrael follow His
commandments is the ultimate redemption - .גאולה שלמהOur
sages homiletically interpret the first words in the Parasha to
hint to this great reward. Redemption comes about אם בחוקותי תלכו
-when you walk with my statutes. The word אםin this pasuk is
the acronym of three pairs of people who helped bring redemp-
tion and salvation to the Jewish nation throughout histo-
ry. אליהומשיח. מרדכי, אסתר משה, אהרון If we want the ,אםif we want the
salvation brought by our leaders, then we must בחוקתי תלכו- walk
with God's commandments.
Notice how the Torah uses the word תלכו(walk). The Rabbis
learn from here that in order to move higher in spirituality one
must constantly on the move forward. In order to move a bicy-
cle, one must pedal. The moment one stops or tries to stand
still on his bike, he will tilt and fall. The same is with spirituali-
ty. Pushing harder, always walking forward is essential to spir-
itual growth. The life of a Jew is like downward escalator. Stand-
ing firm and feeling satisfied with what you accomplished will
only make you move downward. May we all have the strength to
continue pushing forward, fulfilling Hashem's command in the
utmost way and may we be zoche to the אם; אליהו משיחwho will
bring us the ultimate redemption speedily in our days. Amen
Shabbat Shalom.
