Most children with healthy appetites are ready to eat almost anything that is offered them and a child rarely dislikes food 31 it is badly cooked.

The 32 a meal is cooked and served is most important and an 33 served meal will often improve a child's appetite. Never ask a child 34_ he likes or dislikes a food and never _35_ likes and dislikes in front of him or allow _36_ else to do so. If the father says he hates fat meat or the mother _37_ vegetables in the child's hearing he is _38_ to copy this procedure. Take it _39_ granted that he likes everything and he probably _40_. Nothing healthful should be omitted from the meal because of a _41 _ dislike. At meal times it is a good _42_ to give a child a small portion and let him _43 _ back for a second helping rather than give him as _44_ as he is likely to eat all at once. Do not talk too much to the child _45_ meal times, but let him get on with his food; and do not _46_ him to leave the table immediately after a meal or he will _47_ learn to swallow his food _48_ he can hurry back to his toys. Under _49_ circumstances must a child be coaxed _50_ forced to eat. 31. [A]if [B]until [C]that [D]unless32. [A]procedure [B]process [C]way [D]method

III. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points)Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage 1Dream is a story that a person "watches" or even takes part in during sleep. Dream

events are imaginary, but they are related to real experiences and needs in the dreamer's life. They seem real while they are taking place. Some dreams are pleasant, others are annoying, and still others are frightening. Everyone dreams, but some persons never recall dreaming. Others remember only a little about a dream they had just before awakening and nothing about earlier dreams. No one recalls all his dreams. Dreams involve little logical thought. In most dreams, the dreamer cannot control what happens to him. The story may be confusing, and things happen that would not happen in real life. People see in most dreams, but they may also hear, smell, touch, and taste in their dreams. Most dreams occur in color, but persons who have been blind since birth do not see at all in dreams. Dreams are a product of the sleeper's mind. They include events and feelings that he has experienced. Most dreams are related to events of the day before the dream and strong wishes of the dreamer. Many minor incidents of the hours before sleep appear in dreams. Few events more than two days old turn up. Deep wishes or fears - especially those held since childhood- often appear in

Page 5: 北京语言大学网络教育学院 - open.com.cnfile.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2015-1-21/Article... · Web view2015/01/21  · Circulation depends somewhat on the work of the circulation

dreams, and many dreams fulfill such wishes. Events in the sleeper's surrounding- a loud noise, for example, may become part of a dream, but they do not cause dreams. Some dreams involve deep feelings that a person may not realize he has. Psychiatrists(精神病医生) often use material from a patient's dreams to help the person understand himself better. Dreaming may help maintain good learning ability, memory, and emotional adjustment. People who get plenty of sleep-but are awakened each time they begin to dream- become anxious and restless. 51. This passage is mainly about _______.[A] why we dream during sleep [B] how we dream during sleep[C] what dreams are [D] what benefits dreams bring to people52. According to the passage, dreams result from _______.[A] the sleeper's wishes [B] the sleeper's imagination[C] the sleeper's feeling [D] the sleeper's own mind53. Which of the following is NOT true? [A] Dream is a confusing story which involves little logic thought.[B] Dream is related to the dreamer's real life.[C] Dream is an imaginary store which seems real while taking place.[D] Dream involves events that always happen in real life.54. This passage suggests that psychiatrists are _______.[A] trying to help the dreamer recall his earlier dreams.[B] trying to make the sleeper dream logically.[C] studying the benefits of dreams.[D] helping the sleeper fulfill his dreams55. We may infer from the passage that dreaming _______.[A] is beneficial to people [B] disturbs people's life[C] makes people always restless [D] deprives people of a good sleep

Passage 2Americans are pound of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few

things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States? Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity (身份) than to step out of uniform? Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的) . They are often more comfortable and

Page 6: 北京语言大学网络教育学院 - open.com.cnfile.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2015-1-21/Article... · Web view2015/01/21  · Circulation depends somewhat on the work of the circulation

more durable than civilian clothes. Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least. Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes. 56. It is surprising that Americans who worship variety and individuality _______. [A] still judge a man by his clothes[B] hold the uniform in such high regard[C] enjoy having a professional identity[D] will respect an elevator operator as much as a general in uniform57. People are accustomed to think that a man in uniform _______. [A] suggests quality work[B] discards his social identity[C] appears to be more practical[D] looks superior to a person in civilian clothes58. The chief function of a uniform is to _______. [A] provide practical benefits to the wearer[B] make the wearer catch the pubic eye[C] inspire the wearer’s confidence in himself[D] provide the wearer with a professional identity59. According to the passage, people wearing uniforms _______. [A] are usually helpful[B] have little or no individual freedom[C] tend to lose their individuality[D] enjoy greater popularity60. The best title for this passage would be _______. [A] Uniforms and Society[B] The Importance of Wearing a Uniform[C] Practical Benefits of Wearing a Uniform[D] Advantages and Disadvantages of Uniforms Passage 3

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" "And

Page 7: 北京语言大学网络教育学院 - open.com.cnfile.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2015-1-21/Article... · Web view2015/01/21  · Circulation depends somewhat on the work of the circulation

Paul --- why didn't pick up that he was friendly just because 1 had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, It's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends - or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You're a lucky dog." that's being friendly. But "lucky dog"? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that the doesn't think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for " is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture ? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say, you may save another mistake.61. This passage is mainly about_______. [A] how to interpret what people say[B] what to do when you listen to others talking[C] how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people[D] Why we go wrong with people sometimes62. According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that_______.[A] We fail to listen carefully when they talk[B] People tend to be annoyed when we check what they say[C] People usually state one thing but means another[D] We tend to doubt what our friends say63. In the sentence "Maybe he doesn't see it himself." In the second paragraph, the pronoun "it "refers to _______. [A] being friendly [B] a bit of envy[C] lucky dog [D] your luck64. When we listen to a person talking, the most important thing for us to do is. [A] notice the way the person is talking[B] take a good look at the person talking[C] mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes[D] examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture65. The author most probably is a _______.[A] teacher [B] psychologist[C] philosopher [D] doctor

Passage 1People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a

solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem. First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam's bicycle is broken, and he cannot read it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle. Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific. Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop. He can look at his gears carefully. After studying the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an illustration. His suggestions might be: put oil on the gear wheels; buy new gear wheels and replace the old ones; tighten or loosen the gear wheels. Eventually one suggestion seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the final idea comes very suddenly because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a new way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees that there is a piece of chewing gum( 口 香 糖 )between the gear wheels. He immediately realizes the solution to his problem: he must clean the gear wheels. Finally the solution is tested. Sam cleans the gear wheels and finds that afterwards his bicycle works perfectly. In short, he has solved the problem.51. What is the best title for this passage? _______. [A] Six Stages for Repairing Sam's Bicycle[B] Possible Ways to Problem-solving[C] Necessities of Problem Analysis[D] Suggestions for Analyzing a Problem52. In analyzing a problem we should do all the following except _______.[A] recognize and define the problem[B] look for information to make the problem clearer[C] have suggestions for a possible solution[D] find a solution by trial or mistake53. By referring to Sam's broken bicycle, the author intends to _______.[A] illustrate the ways to repair his bicycle[B] discuss the problems of his bicycle[C] tell us how to solve a problem[D] show us how to analyses a problem

54. Which of the following is NOT true? [A] People do not analyze the problem they meet.[B] People often accept the opinions or ideas of other people.[C] People may learn from their past experience.[D] People cannot solve some problems they meet.55. As used in the last sentence, the phrase "in short" means _______.[A] in the long run [B] in detail [C] in a word [D] in the end

Passage 2The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of

living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem. As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today's relatively high standard of living, about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living. Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs. For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people are children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old, the normal retirement age. Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons: they are sick, they do not have any motivation( 动力). They have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job. Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer. At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways. First, if the national economy grows. Businesses and industries hire more workers. Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment. Then they will no longer be below the poverty line. Second, if society invests in the poor, the poor will become more productive. If the government spends money on social programs, education, and training for poor people, the poor will have the skills to offer. Then it is more likely that they can find jobs. Finally, if the government distributes society's income differently, it raises some poor people above the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare. In 1975 over 18million people in the United States received welfare. Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living.56. The author's main purpose to write this article is _______. [A] to define what the poverty line is [B] to explain why some people live the poverty line

Page 16: 北京语言大学网络教育学院 - open.com.cnfile.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2015-1-21/Article... · Web view2015/01/21  · Circulation depends somewhat on the work of the circulation

[C] to find solutions to the problem of poverty[D] to show sympathy for those poor people57. Which of the following is NOT true? [A] Ten percent of the Americans live a poor life.[B] Poor people are those who love below the poverty line.[C] The poverty line rises as the general standard of living rises.[D] The poverty line tends to be at the same level.58. More than 40 percent of the poor people are children. This is mainly because _______. [A] they do not have enough motivation[B] they are so young that they are deprived of chances to work[C] they fail to get enough education [D] they are very poor in health59. Most of the American poor people are not qualified for employment because _______. [A] they do not have any motivation to work[B] they are not very self-confident[C] they are too young or too old to work[D] they have physical and family problems60. We may conclude from the passage that _______.[A] better solutions to the poverty problem are not yet found[B] welfare will enable people to be rich[C] poor people are bound to go out of the poverty line if they have chances to do business[D] employment is the best solution to the poverty problem

Passage 3The rise of multinational corporations ( 跨 国 公 司 ), global marketing, new

communications technologies, and shrinking cultural differences have led to an unparalleled increase in global public relations or PR. Surprisingly, since modern PR was largely an American invention, the U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries. Ten years ago, for example, the world's top five public relations agencies were American owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becoming more sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half of all British companies include PR as part of their corporate ( 公司的 ) planning activities, compared to about one third of U.S. companies, It may not be long before London replaces New York as the capital of PR. Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? First, Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledge of world geography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly, Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts (相对应的人)in knowing a second language. Less than 5 percent of Burson Marshall's U.S. employees know two languages. Ogilvy and Mather have about the same percentage. Conversely, some European firms have half or more

of their employees fluent in a second language. Finally, people involved in PR abroad tend to keep a closer eye on international affairs. In the financial PR area, for instance, most Americans read the Wall Street Journal. Overseas, their counterparts read the Journal as well as the Financial Times of London and The Economist, publications not often read in this country. Perhaps the PR industry might take a lesson from Ted Turner of CNN (Cable News Network). Turner recently announced that the word "foreign" would no longer be used on CNN news broadcasts. According to Turner, global communications have made the nations of the world so interdependent that there is no longer any such thing as foreign.61.According to the passage, U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatenedbecause_______.[A] an unparalleled increase in the number of public relations companies[B] shrinking cultural differences and new communications technologies[C] the decreasing number of multinational corporations in the U.S.[D] increased efforts of other countries in public relations62.London could soon replace New York as the center of PR because_______.[A] British companies are more ambitious than U.S. companies[B] British companies place more importance on PR than U.S. companies[C] British companies are heavily involved in planning activities[D] four of the world's top public relations agencies are British-owned63.The word "provincial" (Line 2, Para. 3) most probably means “_______”.[A] limited in outlook[B] like people from the provinces[C] rigid in thinking[D] interested in world financial affairs64.We learn from the third paragraph that employees in the American PR industry_______.[A] speak at least one foreign language fluently[B] are ignorant about world geography[C] are not as sophisticated as their European counterparts[D] enjoy reading a great variety of English business publications65.What lesson might the PR industry take from Ted Turner of CNN? [A] American PR companies should be more internationally minded.[B] The American PR industry should develop global communications technologies. [C] People working in PR should be more fluent in foreign languages.[D] People involved in PR should avoid using the word "foreign".

the details. 33 anything happen in the world, reporters are on the spot to gather the news.

Newspapers have one basic 34 , to get the news as quickly as possible from its source, from those

who make it to those who want to 35 it. Radio, telegraph, television, and 36 inventions brought

competition for newspapers. So did the development of magazines and other means of

communication. 37, this competition merely spurred the newspapers on. They quickly made use of

the newer and faster means of communication to improve the 38 and thus the efficiency of their

own operations. Today more newspapers are 39 and read than ever before. Competition also led

newspapers 40 branch out into many other fields. Besides keeping readers 41 of the latest news,

today's newspapers educate and influence readers about politics and other important and serious

matters. Newspapers influence readers' economic choices 42 advertising. Most newspapers

depend on advertising for their very 43 . Newspapers are sold at a price that 44 even a small

fraction of the cost of production. The main 45 of income for most newspapers in commercial

This 47 in terms of circulation. How many people read the newspaper? Circulation depends

somewhat on the work of the circulation department and on the services or entertainment 48 in a

III. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points)Directions: There is one passage followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage 1In 1993, New York State ordered stores to charge a deposit on beverage ( 饮

料)containers. Within a year. Consumers had returned millions of aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles. Plenty of companies were eager to accept the aluminum and glass as raw materials for new products. But because few could figure out what to do with the plastic, much of it wound up buried in landfills (垃圾填埋场) . The problem was not limited to New York. Unfortunately, there were too few uses for second-hand plastic.

Today, one out of five plastic soda bottles is recycled(回收利用)in the United States. The reason for the change is that now there are dozens of companies across the country buying discarded plastic soda bottles and turning them into fence posts, paint brushes, etc.

Shrinking landfill space, and rising costs for burying and burning rubbish are forcing local governments to look more closely at recycling. In many areas, the East Coast especially, recycling is already the least expensive waste-management option. For every ton of waste recycled, a city avoids paying for its disposal, which, in parts of New York, amounts to saving of more than $100 per ton. Recycling also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and trims the pollution control and energy costs of industries that make recycled products by giving them a more refined raw material. 51. What regulation was issued by New York State concerning beverage containers?[A] Beverage companies should be responsible for collecting and reusing discarded plastic

soda bottles.[B] Throwaways should be collected by the state for recycling.[C] A fee should be charged on used containers for recycling. [D] Consumers had to pay for beverage containers and could get their money back on

returning them.52. The returned plastic bottles in New York used to _______. [A] end up somewhere underground[B] be turned into raw materials

Page 24: 北京语言大学网络教育学院 - open.com.cnfile.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2015-1-21/Article... · Web view2015/01/21  · Circulation depends somewhat on the work of the circulation

[C] have a second-life value[D] be separated from other rubbish53. The key problem in dealing with returned plastic beverage containers is _______. [A] to sell them at a profitable price[B] how to turn them into useful things[C] how to reduce their recycling costs[D] to lower the prices for used materials54. Recycling ahs become the first choice for the disposal of rubbish because _______. [A] local governments find it easy to manage[B] recycling ahs great appeal for the jobless[C] recycling causes little pollution[D] other methods are more expensive55. It can be concluded from the passage that _______[A] rubbish is a potential remedy for the shortage of raw materials[B] local governments in the U. S. can expect big profits from recycling [C] recycling is to be recommended both economically and environmentally[D] landfills will still be widely used for waste disposal Passage 2

The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.

I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.56. In what way can we make a machine intelligent? [A] By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.[B] By working hard for 10 or 20 years.

[C] By either properly programming it or changing its structure.[D] By reproducing it.57. What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability? [A] He believes they will be useful to human beings.[B] He believes that they will control us in the future.[C] He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.[D] He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.58. The word "carbon" (Line 3, Para. 2 ) stands for_______. [A] intelligent robots [B] a chemical element [C] an organic substance [D] human beings59. A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when_______. [A] its intelligence and cost are beyond question[B] it is able to bear the rough environment[C] it is made as complex as the human brain[D] its architecture is different from that of the present ones60. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.[A] after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self reproduction[B] with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability[C] once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will possess intelligence[D] robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space

daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased, fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed - natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ... What refrigeration did promote was marketing-marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price. Consequently, most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away continuously,

and at vast expense, busily maintaining an artificially-cooled space inside an artificially-heated house -- while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge's effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don't believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you'll get rid of that terrible hum.61.
