அநந்தனின் அவதார ரகசியம்

பபாய்ளகயடியான்

“ அக்ரத : ப்ரயபயௌ ராம : ஸீதாமத்வய ஸூமத்யமா I

ப்ருஷ்ைதஸ்ச தனுஷ்பாணி : லக்ஷ்மவணா அநுேகாமஹ II “

அதாவது தந்ளதயின் வாக்ளகக் காப்பாற்ற வனத்தில், ராமன் முன்வன பசல்ல . சீளத அவளன பின்பதாைர, அவர்களுக்கு பின்வன வில்வலந்திய கரத்துைன் லக்ஷ்மணனன் பசன்றார் என்று எப்படி வருணித்தாவரா, அது-வபான்வற இவர்கள் பசன்றது நிளன-வுபடுத்தியது .

ராமாநுேன் வவறு யாருமில்ளலவய !

லக்ஷ்மணனாக அவதரித்த அநந்தனின் மறு அவ-தாரம்தாவன !

நடுசாமத்தில் மூவரும், ஒருமரத்தடியில் தங்கினார்கள். சிறுவனான, இளையாழ்வார் கண்ணயர்ந்தார். பபாழுது விடிந்தது. வில்லிச்சி தனக்கு தாகமாக இருக்கிறது என்று பசால்ல, வில்லி அவதா ஒரு கிணறு பதரி-கிறது என்று கூற, இளையாழ்வார் சாளலவயாரமிருந்த அந்த கிணற்றில் இறங்கி அவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் தண்ணரீ் பகாண்டு வந்து அவர்கள் இருக்கும் இருக்கும் இைத்திற்கு வந்தவபாது அவர்களை அங்கு காண-வில்ளல. தளலளய உயர்த்திப்-பார்த்தவருக்கு, என்ன ஆச்சர்யம் !

புண்யவகாடி விமானம் கண்கைில் பட்ைது. மக்கள் இங்கும், அங்குமாக பசன்று பகாண்டிருந்தனர். இளை-யாழ்வாருக்குப் புரிந்து விட்ைது. தாம் இப்வபாது இருப்பது காஞ்சீபுரம் தான், வந்த தம்பதிகள் வவறுயாரு-மல்ல, வபரருைனான வரதராேனும், பபருந்வதவித்தாயாருவம என்பது.

எம்பபருமானின் கருளணளய நிளனந்து, நிளனந்து அப்படிவய மூர்ச்ளசயானார்.

மூர்ச்ளச பதைிந்தவர், தம் நித்ய கர்மானுஷ்ைானங்களை முடித்துக்-பகாண்டு, வநராக வகாயிலுக்குச்பசன்று அந்த வபரருைாைளன தரிசித்தார். அன்றுமுதல் தாம் அந்த திவ்ய தம்பதிகளுக்கு நீர் பகாண்டுவந்த கிணற்-றிலிருந்வத தீர்தம் பகாண்டுவந்து, வபரருைாைனின் திருமஞ்சனத்திற்கு ளகங்கர்யம் பசய்யத் பதாைங்கினார்.

( இன்றும் அந்த “ சாளலக்கிணறு “ என்று வழங்கப்படும் கிணற்றிலிருந்துதான் பபருமாளுக்கு தீர்த்தம் பகாண்டுவரப் படுகின்றது. அதற்கு அருகில் ராமாநுே-ருக்கு ஒரு சந்நிதியுள்ைது. பிரதி வருை-மும், இயற்பா சாற்றுமுளறக்கு மறுநாள் அருைாைன் இந்த இளையாழ்வார் சந்நிக்கு எழுந்தருை, அவருக்கு திருமஞ்சனம் நளைபபறுகிறது. அன்று

எம்பபருமானுக்கு, அவரும் தாயாரும், வில்லி, வில்லிச்சியாக வந்தளத நிளனவுபடுத்தும் வளகயில் ளகயில் வில்லும், அம்பும் ஸமர்பித்து அலங்காரம் பசய்யப்படுகின்றது. )

விந்தியமளலக்காட்டில், இளையாழ்வாளர இழந்த, யாதவப்பிரகாஸரும், அவர் சீைர்களும், காசிநகர் வந்தளைந்தனர். யாதவப்ரகாஸருக்கு “ சித்து “ வவளல ளகவந்த களல. தம் மந்திரசக்தியினால், கங்ளகயில் ஸ்நாநம் பசய்த வகாவிந்த பட்ைரின், உள்ைங்ளகயில் ஒரு சிவலிங்கத்ளத வரவளழ-த்து காட்டினார். அதளனக்கண்ை வகாவிந்தன், மகிழ்ச்சியுைன் குருவிைம் காட்ை அதற்கு அவர், “ கங்ளகயில் நீராடிய பலன் ளகவமல் கிளைத்து விட்ைது. நீ இதளன தினமும் பூேித்து வா இன்று முதல் உன் பபயர் உள்ைங்ளக பகாணர்ந்த நாயனார் என்று வழங்கட்டும் “ என்று வாழ்த்-னார் புன்சிரிப்புைன், தன் ஸ்ரீளவஷ்ணவ சீைன் ஒருவளன அத்ளவதியாக மாற்றி விட்வைாம் என்ற மகிழ்ச்சியில். வகாவிந்தனும் சிவமதத்ளதச் வசர்ந்தவராக மாறியதுைன் அந்த லிங்கத்ளத தம் பசாந்த ஊரான மதுர மங்கலத்தில் ப்ரதிஷ்ளை பசய்து பூேித்து வரலானார். பின்பு காைஹஸ்தி பசன்று காைஹஸ்திநாதனுக்கு சிவபூளே பசய்து வரலானார்.

|| Sri VaikunTa EkAdasi day & the 5th day of Dhanur MAsam ||

On this sacred day of VaikunTa EkAdasi also known as MukkoTi EkAdasi, Bheeshama EkAdasi, KrishNa BhagavAn is said to have performed GithOpadesam to his student ArjunA on the battle field of Kurukshethram. Hence this day is also known as GeethA Jayanthi day.

On this holiest of holy days in SrivaishNavA calendar , Sri Ranganathan comes out of His AasthAnam and enters the VaikunTa vaasal followed by throngs of devotees. During the Adhyayana uthsavam coming to a splenderous conclusion on VaikunTa EkAdasi day , NammAzhwAr performs his SaraNAgathi. Thirumangai initiated the Adhyayana Uthsavam and it has been carried out ever since by all of our Acharyas and the Uttama Nambhis serving the Lord at His Bhoga MaNtapam known as Bhuloka VaikunTam. The Various Gathis (Nadais) demonstrated by the SrI Paadham ThAngees of Lord Ranganatha such as Simha Gathi , Vyagra Gathi, Sarpa Gathi and Rishabha Gathi have deep esoteric and Yogic significance. The travel of Kundalini sakthi through Sushumna Naadi to SahasrAram and the darsanam of the Lord there in the form of a resplendent Jyothi is referred to by Swami Desikan in the first slokam of Sri Bhagavath Dhyana SopAnam:

SIDDHI MOKSHAANURUPAM I DHEENAA NAATHA VYSANA SAMANAM DAIVATHAM DIAVATHAANAAM DIVYAM CHAKSHU: SRUTHIPARISHATHAAM DRUSYATEH RANGAMADYEH II

Swami Desikan emulates the beautiful experience of ThiruppANAzhwar described by latter in the ten verses of AmalanAdhipirAn in his Sthothram. The first describes the oLi pizhambhu (Jyothi), which is residing in the Yogi's sahsrAram, which is the same as the one resting on Adhiseshan a the middle of the two cauveris in the island of Srirangam. Natha Muni practised the very same Yogam and revealed it to his sishyAs through his AruLiccheyal known as Yoga Rahasyam , which is no longer available to us.

Pointedly, Swami Desikan chooses the phrases YaminAm for Yogis, Antha: Jyothi : (Internal effulgence at the thousand petalled lotus in one's head), Yoga Dhrushteh: (the JnanakkaNN) and goes onto describe the blessings given by that resplendent Jyothi experienced through One or other YogAs taught by GeethAchaaryan to ArjunA.

Swami states that this Jyothi is known as " Siddhi MokshAnurupam ChintA ratnam (The chinthAmani/divine , wish yielding gem stone , which gives the Moksham as well as Bhogam in this universe). That Jyothi also has the power to be " Dheena Anaatha Vyasana Samanam ". It banishes the sorrows of the powerless , who are unable to practice the tough YogAs and those , who have no one to protect them (AnAthais). Swami Desikan concludes this powerful first slokam by revealing that this Jyothi is Daivatham DaivathAnAm or the supreme Lord of all Gods and is resting in the middle of Srirangam practising Yoga NidrA.

Like ThiruppANAzhwAr, AndAL merged with this illustrious Jyothi at Srirangam. She climbed Sri RanganathA's serpent bed and merged with Him as His chosen bride. Until then, Sri Ranganatha according to a slokam of GodhA sthuthi of Swami Desikan was anxiously looking in the southern direction (towards Srivilliputthur) for AndAL to complete her Prabhandhams and journey to His side. (NidhraaLunApi niyatham nihithA : KatakshA :). Even as he was sleeping in Yoga Nidra , RanganathA was often opening His eyes anxiously to see whether AndAL was ready to travel to His asthAnam and become His bride.

Such is the glory of this day and that of Sri Godha Piratti and Her consort Sri RanganaathA.

RAMA EKADASI

The history of this Ekadasi is found in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana where Lord

Krishna tells King Yudhisthira about the history of Chandrabhaga and her

deceased husband Shobhana. How Chandrabhaga could transfer the merits of her

Ekadasi fast to her husband is stated in this chapter. Sins and evil deeds can be

washed away by observing a vrat on this day.

HARIBODHINI EKADASI

This chapter is narrated by Lord Brahma to his son Narada in the Skanda Purana,

where Lord Brahma tells how Lord Visnu and other demigods get up on this day.

Kartika month ends on this day. The Hindu devotees believe that Lord Vishnu

woke up from his Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) on this day

In a Leap year (Purshottam Maasa) there is one extra

month so 2 additional Ekadasis are there.

In this chapter Lord Krishna describes the rules and regulations, as well as the

benefits regarding the Ekadasi to Yudhisthira. Lord Krishna also narrates about the

history of Kartaviryarjuna's mother Padmini, which Pulastya muni recites to

Narada. This Ekadasi appears on the extra month of every leap year and hence very

special. Whoever observes this Ekadasi will have all his desires fulfilled and surely

attain to the spiritual abode of Krishna.

PARAMA EKADASI

Like Padmini Ekadasi this Ekadasi also appears on the extra month of every leap

year. Fasting on this Ekadasi bestows the great benediction of an enjoyable life and

ultimate liberation from birth and death, nullifies all kinds of sins and removes all

miseries caused by poverty. The history of a brahmana Sumedha and his wife

Pavitra is narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhisthira.

Though religious importance is attached to all Ekadasis, specific significance is

attached to certain Ekadasis

Vaikunta Ekadasi is one the important and auspicious days to the Hindus. It is

dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It occurs in the Hindu calander month of Margazi

(December and January). Also called the 'Mukkoti Ekadasi', Mokshada Ekadasi”

when observed, it bestows liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The

significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi is mentioned in the 'Padma Purana'.

Fasting on Ekadasi is considered holier than any other religious observation. And

according to Vishnu Purana, fasting on Vaikuntha Ekadasi is equivalent to fasting

on the remaining 23 Ekadasis of the year

Vaikunta stands for Vai+kunta whichmeans where there is no deficiency (kunta).

The ego self "i" suffers from a feeling of deficiency. Because of identification of

infinite self with limited body mind complex, the ego self always feels lacking.

When the ego self drops in total surrender to the Lord, we attain Vaikunta - deep

bliss and peace of the Spirit - Atman. Vaikunta Ekadasi fasting is for attaining

liberation from the ego self.

Vishnu opened the gate of Vaikuntam (his abode) for two demons in spite of their

being against Him. They demons asked for the boon that whoever listens to their

story and sees the image of Vishnu coming out of the door, called Vaikunt Dwar,

will reach Vaikunt as well. Temples all over India make a door kind of structure

for devotees to walk through on this day.

On the day of Vaikunta Ekadasi, Lord Krishna taught Bhagavad gita. The eighteen

chapters of Bhagavad gita present the moksha shastra - secrets of Liberation.

Through the path of Gnana, Bhakti and Karma, one reaches liberation. Bhagavad

gita is the key to open the locks of the gates of Vaikunta. Study of Bhagavad gita,

teaching of Bhagavad gita, practicing Bhagavad gita opens the Gate of Vaikunta.

It is believed that on the day of the Vaikunta ekadasi, Devatas and Asuras churned

the milky ocean. As per Hindu belief Milky ocean represents the satvik mind.

Devatas and Asuras represent the positive and negative thoughts.

It can be compared that churning produced the halahala – poison, of deep routed

samskaras and vasanas in us. Many powers of the mind - siddhis manifest

represented by jewels coming out of Milky ocean, Dhanvantari – the Divine doctor

appearing (representing the healing abilities of sadhak), and Mahalaxmi

(representing Divine qualities - shat sampatti) appearing. Finally, amrita - nectar

appears. Nectar of wisdom, Nectar of enlightenment and Nectar of liberation. This

is the day Lord Shiva drank poison and hence Ekadasi is also called Nanjunda

ekadasi. Shiva represents - adi Guru. Who drinks the poison of the samskara and

vasanas of human life.

The significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi and the splendour of the observance of that

special Ekadasi can be witnessed by devotees at Srirangam Temple.

body on the above; cha saagare avagaaDhayaa chaayayaa = and with his

shadow immersed in the sea below; aasiit nauriva = like a boat;

maarutaavishhTaa = driven by wind.

Then Hanuma who was flying above the ocean with his body above the

ocean and his shadow being immersed in the sea below, looked like a boat being

driven by wind.

यं यं देशं समुद्रस्य जगाम स महाकवपिः |

स स तस्योरुवगेेन सोन्माद इव लक्ष्यत े| ५-१-६८

68. yam yam desham = whatever place; samudrasya = of the ocean; saH

mahaakapiH = that great monkey; jagaama = went; saH saH = that place;

lakshyate = was seen; sonmaadaH = to be in agitation; tasya uuruvegena = by

the force of His thighs.

Whatever place Hanuma went towards on the ocean, that place became

agitated due to the force of thighs.

மருதமரம் பற்றிச் பசால்லும்வபாது , பாசுரப்படி பாகவதத்தில் ' மண மருவு வதாள்

ஆய்ச்சி ஆர்க்கப்வபாய் ,உரவலாடும் ஒருங்கு ஒத்த இளணமருதம்

உன்னிய வந்தவளர,ஊரு கரத்திவனாடும் உந்தி, எண்திளசவயாரும் வணங்க ,இளண மருதூடு நைந்திட்டு......" என்று பசால்கிறார்.

ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவதம் பசால்வது என்னபவன்றால், ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணன் ,உைலுைன் கட்டி இருந்த உரளலயும் இழுத்துக் பகாண்டு,அந்த இரு மரங்கைின் அடித்தண்டின் இளைபவைி நடுவவ பிரவவசித்து, உரளலத் தன் பலத்தால் இழுத்தார் . இதன்படி, ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணன் உரளலயும் இழுத்துக் பகாண்டு மரங்ககள் ஊவை தவழ்ந்து பசன்று தன் பலத்தால் இழுத்தார் என்று பதரிகிறது; பாசுரப்படி பாகவதத்தில் "இளண மருதூடு

நைந்திட்டு " என்று உள்ைது. இதற்குப் பபாருள் என்ன?

Madurakavi Azhwar just wrote about Nammazhwar, not even to Sriman Narayana ,but attained the status of Azhwar .Above all, Nammazhwar, called as 'Our Azhwar' is with various names like Maran, Stakopan, Parankusan. His compositions include Thiruvaimozhi,Thiruvirutham,Thiruvasiriyam, Periya Thiruvanthathi.Thiruvaimozhi is just an essence of sama veda with 1102 pasurams , and all his four prabhandams totally 1296 are written in andhathi style,Nine types of metres arranged in 100 decades ,which are divided in ten sections known as pathu . This is thus recited one pathu in one day for ten

days during irapathu utsavam. .Most of the pasurams indicate that the power of divine namas is ,all our sins get absolved and reduced to ashes just as object cast in fire. When one hears or utters or just thinks His namas or all these pasurams which hails His Supreme nature, it is sure to get HIs blessings, grace and the way for eternity. Now on Dharma shthothram ....,

In 374 th nama Kshobhanah it is meant as 'The Agitator'. Sriman Narayana is the creator of commotion. At the time of creation He entered at His own will the changeable prakrti and the changeless purusa and created agitation among them. Thirumangai Azhwar in Peria Thirumozhi on Thirunaraiur temple says as "Thannale than uruvam payantha" .He has His own sankalpam to have an incarnation. All the three worlds with shining features is under His command. He only created the forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. He only is the incarnation of Sri Krishna. All willingly surrender Him .In another pasuram on Thirunaraiyur says as Pul vai pilantha punitha . Sriman Narayana came in the form of crane and killed Bakasura by cutting mouth. This was done in agitating mood just to satisfy the devotees. Nammazhwar says the Supreme Sriman Narayana takes birth in the world in all categories of living beings for protecting them from their age long sufferings and giving succor to them. He says in one pasuram in Thiruvaimozhi as "Pullin vai pilanthai maruthu idai poyinai. He narrates the killing of bakasura, killing of seven buffalos in agitation. Andal also in Thirupavai says as "Pullin vai keendanai ,polla arakkanai killik kalainthanai 'indicating agitating incarnations of killing Bakasura, and on removal of ten heads of Ravana

In 375th nama Devah is meant as one who is conqueror, shining and praiseworthy. Sriman Narayana sports through His plays of the great Creation-Sustenance-Destruction and succeeds, excel and getting encomiums for the same. He functions in all Beings and shines as the Universal Consciousness;, and getting mangalasasanam from all devotees . In Upanishad it is stated as “There is only one Deva.He who diverts himself. He binds the jeevas with the strings of maya prakrti and plays with them even as the hunters do with the tigers and boars in the forest.". The special features He possesses for being called as Deva are for His desires to be victorious over all the asuras. He is dwelling in all beings, and shining as innermost self of all beings. He is praised even by all praiseworthy ones and pervades all beings. He plays and make the souls also play .In Nanmugan Thiruvanthathi,Thirumazhisai Azhwar starts his pasuram as 'Nanmuganai naarayanan padaithan ' . This he meant as Brahma is created by Sriman Narayana only. In one pasuram neeye ulagu ellam Nin arule , Azhwar says as the entire universe is under the command of Sriman Narayana only. All beings in energetic form is also because of His Grace. He only is the head of Brahma and others with HIs penance power. Similarly in another pasuram 'Vaan ulavu thee vali maa kadal ' Azhwar says as Sky, fire, air, ocean, big hills, sun, moon, wind, directions, ocean, and all beings are all existing only with the sankalpam of Sriman Narayana.

"தூதுவளனக் பகால்வவதா, மரணதண்ைளன விதிப்பவதா, ராேநீதிக்கு புறம்பானது,

வவண்டுமானல், அங்கஹனீம் பசய்யலாம்", என சளபயிவல விபஷீணன், எடுத்துளரக்க,

அளத ஏற்றுக்பகாண்ை இராவணன், "வானரத்துக்கு லக்ஷணம் அதன் வால்தான். அந்த வாளலக் பகாழுத்தி குரங்ளக அடித்துத் துரத்துங்கள்", என கட்ைளையிட்ைான்.

அதன்படி, வாலில் துணிகட்ைப்பட்டு, எண்ளண ஊற்றி, பநருப்பு ளவக்கப்பட்ைது. ஹனுமாளன, பதருக்கள் வழியாக இழுத்துச்பசன்றார்கள். இந்த விஷயம் சீளதயின்

காதில் விழ, " அக்னிவய நீ ஆஞ்சவனயனுக்கு குைிர்ந்து வபாகக்கைவாய் "என ப்ரார்தித்தாள். இங்வக ஆஞ்சவனயர் ஒரு அற்புதத்ளத உணர்ந்தார். " பநருப்வபா எரிகிறது. ஆனால்

என் வால் குைிர்ச்சியாக இருக்கிறவத!! இது என்ன அதிசயம். ஆஹா!! ராம காரியத்தில்

பஞ்ச பூதங்கள் எனக்கு உதவுகிறார்கள்." என்று அந்த சந்தர்ப்பத்ளத பயன்படுத்திக்பகாண்ை

ஆஞ்சவனயர் இலங்ளகளய தகனம் பசய்து விட்ைார், பின் வாளல கைலில் மூழ்கி அளணத்துக்பகாண்டு, அப்வபாது சீளதயின் ஞாபகம் வரவவ, " நான் என்ன காரியம் பசய்வதன். "ஐயவகா,,.நான் தவறு பசய்து விட்வைவன, சீளத என்ன ஆனாவைா??" என்று அவர் நினக்கும்

வநரத்தில், "" சீளதயிருக்குமிைம் தவிற மற்றளவ எரிகின்றன." எனக்கூறுவது அசரீரியாக

ஒலிக்க, "ஆஹா!! நான் சீளதயின் அருைால் பிளழத்வதன். பநருப்பு, அந்த கற்பு மாதாளவ

எப்படித்தீண்டும். அக்னிளய அக்னி என்ன பசய்யமுடியும்.?? என்று திருப்தி அளைந்து

சீளதயிைம் மீண்டும் வந்து வக்ஷமம் விசாரித்து, ஆசி பபற்றுக்பகாண்டு, திரிவகாணமளல ஏறி, ஆகாயத்தில் கிைம்பினார், வாயு புத்திரன்.

Thirupavai is called as Sanga Tamil because it has all three modes of enetertainment iyal(prose

literature), isai(poetry/music) and natakam(drama). The fourth pasuram is in the form of a drama

(natakam). aazhi mazhai(k) kaNNaa onRu nee kai karavEl

In the first three pasurams Andal Nachiar addressed her friends but here she addresses aazhi

mazhai(k) kaNNaa which means aazhi mazhaiku annan and refers to deity in charge of rain

showers. Why does she address this deity all of a sudden now? The deity stood in front of Andal

Nachiar as he heard her sing in the previous pasuram that the surrounding area will be blessed

by good rain showers by singing the praise of the Lord. The deity in charge of rain wanted to

perform kaimkaryams to Andal and her friends.

This pasuram shows us about the way in which the celestials seek to serve true Bagawathas.

Purusha Suktam says that the devas will appear before those people who have sought refuge

under the protection of Lord Narayana to find out if they could be of any help. The old 108 divya

desam temples do not have a sanctum for navagraha devathas. Vishnu temples in general do

not have sannidhi for navagraha devathas the only exception is the temple of Koodalazhagar in

Madurai. The reason why Vishnu temples don’t have a sannidhi for navagraha devathas is

because Vishnu is the Supreme Being. The navagraha devathas work under His control. Since

we worship the controller of the navagraha devathas there is no reason to worship the

controlled navagraha devathas. Vedam has said that those people who have faith in Lord

Vishnu as the Supreme Being as their sole protector will be saluted by other deities.

Swami Desikan states that the planets, namely; the Budhan, Sukran, Sani, Guru Rahu, Ketu,

Mangal, Soorya and Chandra in the celestial sphere cling to the Padukai of Perumal. Hence the

planets do not harm those people who seek refuge under the divine feet of Perumal and

worship His padukai thus making it unnecessary to have a sannidhi for navagraha devathas.

aazhi uL pukku mugandhu kodu aarthu Eri

The deity in charge of rain asked Andal Nachiar how and where he should shower rain.

Andal Nachiar asked him to shower rain everywhere even in the area inhabited by sinners

showing us her maternal affection for all jeevatmas. She asked him to drink water completely

from the middle of the ocean (azhi) leaving only the sand. She insists that he should drink water

from the middle of the ocean as it will be free from pollution.

She said, ‘On your way back to the shore you should announce your approach by rumbling. To

show us that you have consumed enough water, your body should look as dark as the body of

Lord Narayana.’

Andal didn’t say you should look dark like Narayana but said that his body should look dark like

the body of Narayana. The reason Andal said that his body should be like the body of Narayana

and not that he should look like Narayana is because he can only try to dress like Narayana. He

will not be able to be as compassionate as Lord Narayana.

Once a year Namperumal at Sri Rangam dresses up as Thayar; his costume is known as

Mohini Alankaram. Sri Parasara Bhattar was known always to favour Ranganayaki Thayar.

Once when Perumal dressed up as Mohini, He sent for Bhattar. After Bhattar arrived, Perumal

expected Bhattar to state that Perumal looked exactly like Thayar but Bhattar replied that even

though Perumal dressed up like Thayar He lacked the compassionate glance of Thayar in both

His eyes since one eye of Perumal is the Sun used to scorch enemies and only the other eye is

the moon cool full of compassion turned towards His devotees. Bhattar stated that both the eyes

of Thayar were cool like the moon and she showered compassion even on Her enemies.

Similar to Perumal being unable to look just like Thayar, the deity in charge of rain will never be

able to look like Perumal.

She insists that the deity of rain should produce brilliant lightening that look like the Sudarsana

Chakra in the hands of Perumal with beautiful broad shoulders. Perumal has broad shoulders to

show that He protects everyone at all times from every kind of danger produced by everybody

else. She asked the deity of rain to produce thunder to sound similar to Panchajanyam.

Panchajanyam causes happiness in the heart of Bagawathas but fear in the minds of their

enemies.

She asked the deity to shower rain in the same way in which the arrows shot by Lord Rama fall

on His enemies in a shower but Andal asked the deity of rain to make rain showers to cause

benefit to everyone. She asked him to provide shower after they finish their morning bath and

that the showers should not hinder any Bagawathas. Everyone should feel happy to receive the

rain showers.Alternate Meaning:

Arjuna requested Perumal to give him upadesam by saying the following slokam. (Ref:

This Slokam is chanted by Sri Vaishnavas while requesting an Acharyan to accept him/her as a

disciple and perform samasrayanam. The slokam has to be adjusted for the word “sishyaha” as

it is in masculine gender by women. This fourth pasuram was composed by Andal Nachiar for

us to use in place of the difficult Sanskrit slokam to request an Acharyan to accept us as his

disciple. The pasuram also speak about the characteristics of a good Acharyan.

An Acharyan’s eyes should be wet because of his happiness in serving Perumal as well as

sorrow in seeing that we do not strive to attain Perumal’s divine feet. The Acharyan should

provide good instructions even if the disciple doesn’t have the mentality to accept good

instruction. The Acharyan should correct the errors made by the disciple.

aazhi uL pukku mugandhu kodu aarthu Eri

Swami Ramanujar said that, ‘Swami Alavandar is an ocean of nectar. I dip in this ocean and

obtain the best gems to give to my disciples.’

This means that the Acharyan should research and analyze the granthams written by

poorvacharyas, understand the concepts and state with great conviction the instructions to his

disciples.oozhi mudhalvan uruvam pOl mey kaRuththu(p)

While listening to the lectures of our Acharyan we get the feeling that we are in the presence of

Perumal Himself. Perumal appeared like dark rain bearing clouds when He created this

Universe.

paazhii am thOLudai(p) paRpanaaban kaiyil

Of the twelve names Perumal chanted daily while wearing thiruman, the eleventh name is

Padmanaban & the twelfth is Damodaran. Padmanaban denotes superiority as Perumal is with

Brahma on the lotus that appeared from His navel. Brahma in turn created Shiva thus as

Padmanaba, Perumal shows us that He is the chief of both Brahma as well as Shiva.

Lord Krishna incarnated as the son of Devaki & Vasudeva. He appeared as a child but along

with His consort. Devaki and Vasudeva obtained Goddess Sridevi as their daughter-in-law on

the same night! Parents await the birth of their grandchild after their son has been married.

Devaki and Vasudeva did not have to wait for a long time as on the Lord’s lotus like navel they

found His son Brahma sitting on a lotus bloom chanting the Vedas! To describe the child

Brahma on the Lord’s navel, Sukacharyar used the word balakam in the slokam “Tam adbhutam

Balakam” in Srimad Bagawatam. The word “Ka” is used to denote Brahma. Sukacharyar could

have used “Balan” to depict the divine child but he specifically used the word “Balakam” to draw

our attention to Lord Brahma present in the navel of the Divine Child. Both the words “bala” as

well as “balakam” mean child. The word “balakam” is used in the sloka to let us know about the

divine child who appeared with “ka”!Hi name Damodaran reveals His simplicity and ease of

accessibility, saulabhyam.

As a child, Krishna was bound to a mortar by Yashoda. Yashoda did not tie Krishna but Krishna

allowed himself to be tied to the mortar by his mother. If he had wished to remain untied, she

could have never accomplished this feat. His glory increased because he let himself be tied by

Yashoda; his coming down to our world is similar to heads of states interacting with common

people to gain popularity, the only difference is that Paramatma is not looking to gain popularity.

He has only our interest in his heart and works to help us. After Krishna brought down the two

Yamalarjuna trees with the mortar He was tied to, Yashoda inspected Krishna to make sure He

wasn’t hurt by the falling trees. ‘How did you manage to drag the mortar? She questioned Him.

She looked at His waist and was shocked. She hadn’t tied the rope tightly but somehow the

rope had scarred Krishna’s waist. His smooth waist now displayed the rope marks. Krishna

sported the rope marks with pride to show us the ease with which we can approach Him and

even bind Him if only we felt an ounce of love Yashoda had for Him.

yamm durgraham sumanasO manasAapi nityam

bandacchidam paramam ISam udAharanti |

dAmnA nibaddha iti Susruma tamm bhavantam

nAlam babhUvitha! bata! slathanAya tasya ||

MEANING:

Oh KrishNA ! You are beyond comprehension in the past, present or future even

by one with an auspicious mind. You are eulogized by the DevAs as the One who

can break the bonds of our KarmAs and as being always with the lady of

Supreme auspiciousness, Sri Devi. We hear that You known for such power and

majesty and yet were tied to a hustling mortar with fine rope and you could

not loosen Yourself from that knot. What a surprise!

An Acharyan shines with the effulgence of Sudarasana Chakra and sounds like the

Panchajanyam in the hands of Padmanabhan while establishing the paratvam(superiority) of

Perumal in debates.

An Acharyan must bless his disciple with many kalakshepams/upanyasams and shower his

disciple with divine knowledge similar to the way in which Lord Rama showered His enemies

with a rain of arrows.

vaazha ulaginil peydhidaay naangaLum

The instructions provided by the Acharyan must be possible for the disciples to follow in this

world.

maargazhi neeraada magizhndhElOr

The disciples should lead a happy life feeling grateful to their sadacharyan for showing them the

right path. The sadacharyan should feel happy that he was able to save the chetanams and

show them the right path that leads out of samsara.

This pasuram must be chanted by disciples while requesting an Acharyan to guide them by

Dharmapuri is a famous Nrusimha Kshethra in KarimNagar district of Andhra Pradesh on the banks of river Godaavari. With the same name, there is one more NaraSimaha temple in PenuGanchiProlu Village of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh State. There was an incident why this NaraSimha got this name. Long back, some devotees from DharmaPuri went to a village called Durgi in Palnadu (Macherla are in Guntur District) area which was famous for sculptors to have an Idol of NaraSimha for Pratistha at DharmaPuri. They have ordered and collected Sri YogaAnanda NaraSimha Vigraha and then taking it to their village DharmaPuri on bullock carts. On the way, when they stopped at PenuGanchiProlu for a night stay. The next day

morning, when they started to continue their journey, the bullock cart in which the Moorthy was placed could not move at all. All their efforts to move the bullock cart went in vain and became futile. In the meantime, an elderly man of PenuGanchiProlu village came to that place and informed that he had a dream that night in which Lord Shri NaraSimha Swamy appeared and told him that He was there on a cart and want to stay in that place only, so he came in search of Him. The villager convinced the people of DharmaPuri village and succeeded to manage and made them agreed to leave the Idol of Lord YogaAnanda Narasimha in PenuGanchiProlu village. DharmaPuri devotees left the Idol in PenuGranchiProlu as per the order of God through the PenuGanchiProlu villager. After, knowing this incident all the villagers of PenuGanchiProlu were overjoyed and they installed Sri YogaAnanda NaraSimha Swamy Moorthy there where the bullock cart stuck on its way. Later, they have built a beautiful temple for Him in the PenuGanchiProlu village. The construction style of the temple says that the temple can be dated back to the 13th Century AD and maybe it was built during the Kakathiya reign. An uniqueness in the construction of this temple is, it was built with special stones which works as air-conditioner. These stones keep the inner side of the temple as cool in summer and warm in winter. But, unfortunately, during the recent renovation process of the temple a few years back, those stones were replaced and hence the particular specialty of this temple is lost. But, anybody want to see such kind of temple, may visit Sri BhaavanNarayana temple at Baapatla in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. This village earlier name was Penu Kanchi Prolu. As in Kanchi (Tamil Nadu State), this village also had many temples so it got this name. It means Big Kanchi. It is said that in the earlier days, there are 108 Anjaneya Temples in this village. A famous Sathi by name Thirupathamma who was born with the boon of Lord Venkateshwara Swamy belongs to this village. She is very famous in Krishna District and well known to in other parts of Andhra Pradesh. This village was got fame with her pious story. The PenuGanchiProlu village fame is based on this temple. Thousands of devotees visit every day Sri Thirupathamma Thalli temple. They offer Pongal to her. On Sunday, the crowd is so big. This famous temple is just a furlong away from the Sri NaraSimha Swamy Temple. There is bus facility directly from Vijayawaada town to PenuGanchiProlu. While coming from Hyderabad, one has to take left diversion at Chillakallu Centre (Jaggayyapet junction). Autos and buses also ply from NandiGaama, JaggayyaPeta and Chillakallu Centres. PenuGanchiProlu is 80 K.M. from Vijayawaada twon and 20 K.M. from NandiGaama and JaggayyaPeta towns. The famous Vedadhri NaraSimha Kshethram is around 12 K.Ms. away from Chillakallu and Nandigama. All the various manifestations of Lord Shiva, the Adityas, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Visvedevas, the two Asvis, the Maruts, the forefathers, the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Asuras and the perfected demigods are beholding You in wonder.

Ivargal Tiruvaakku.

The serving serpent : Adisesha, the serpent, is the bed and the seat of Lord Narayana and Goddess Mahalakshmi. Alavandar specifically mentions Adisesha as the bed of the Goddess too. There is reason for the emphasis, said Kidambi Narayanan in a lecture.

It may be the man of the house who decides the pay of a servant, but it is the lady of the house, from whom the servant takes instructions on what work to do. So although Adisesha is the Lord’s servitor, he is also the Goddess’ servant.

Adisesha has a thousand heads; this means he also has a thousand bodies. This further means that he can serve the Lord thousand fold. Adisesha is with the Lord always serving Him in every avatara of His, and in every way possible. He is an umbrella to the Lord, a seat, a soft bed.

In the Rama avatara, Adisesha came as Lakshmana, who did not sleep a wink, but kept watch over his brother, for the 14 years of His sojourn in the forest.

In the Krishna avatara, Adisesha came as Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother. Lakshmana tells Rama that if he were to be separated from the Lord, he (Lakshmana) will die, just as surely as Sita would. Lakshmana says that he and Sita, if separated from Rama, would die the very moment they are separated. Fish thrown out of water may take a few seconds to die, but Lakshmana and Sita separated from Rama would not last even a second. He is determined to serve his brother in all countries, and to be by His side always.

When the Rama avatara is about to end, Rama tells Lakshmana that His earthly sojourn is coming to a close. Lakshmana, knowing that he will be unable to bear the pangs of separation, enters the Sarayu river, and ends his stay on this Earth, before Rama leaves this world. To Lakshmna, Rama takes precedence over everyone else. Rama, to the devoted Lakshmana, is mother, father and God all rolled into one.

When Dasaratha banishes Rama to the forest, Lakshmana reacts in anger. It is rarely that anyone thinks of the Lord’s welfare above all else. We petition Him for favours all the time, but to think of His comfort is the noble trait of Adisesha.
