    SRI CHATHURBUJA KOTHANDA RAMAR TEMPLE

PONPATHIRKUTTAM VILLAGE KANCHEEPURAM 603 405 TAMILNADU, SOUTH INDIA

    DWAJASTHAMBAM NIRMANAM AND MAHA SAMPROKSHANAM

    Respected devotees of Sri Rama,

Namaskarams. Sri Rama, is the personification of righteousness. ,an exemplar of sixteen most auspicious virtues, and numerous other lovable attributes, truth, manliness ,courage, fortitude, forgiveness , considerateness etc. Sri Sita presents in her immaculate purity, perfect chastity, matchless beauty, steady loyalty, unbounded love and ready forgiveness. Sri Lakshmana an ideal brother, Sri Anjaneya a sincere devoted service oriented guide of all is finding place in all Sri Rama temples. The close affinity that all sections of people feel for this model couple and the reverence in which they hold them are borne out by the fact that even the tiniest village has a temple where they are enshrined and worshipped. Further, the ancient idol of the heroic ages, the embodiment of truth and of morality, the ideal son, brother, king and so on, has been presented before us by great sages in various divyamangala swaroopams. .

One such is Sri Devaraja Maharishi, who had the vision of the appearance of Great Rama Avatara was in the form of Sri Chaturpuja Kothhanda Rama . in Ponpathirkuttam village,Kancheepuram District, Tamilnadu .This temple is located just 13 km from Chengalpattu on Thirukkazhukundram road, near Pon Vilaintha Kalathur. .Nearest Railway station is Otttivakkam, next to Chingleput junction on Villupuram railway track. There, it is splendid darshan of HIM with two arms with Sangam and Chakram and the other two arms with Chin muthras of Abhaya and Varadha. Similarly moolasthanam here is a rare unique, showing Sita and Rama together who constitute supreme phenomenon. They form an inseparable unit. They cohere so close that it is impossible to separate one from the other. The grateful beneficiaries, who notice Sita seated beside Sri Rama on the same pedestal offer worship to both with equal diligence and devotional favor. Sri Chathurbuja Kothandaramar and Sri Sita devi idols with Sri Lakshmana in standing pasture, close to the divine couple and Sri Anjaneya with his mouth closed by his hands in full humbleness before them is the rarest position in any shrine in this country.

Devotees of this temple, which had the previous renovation and Ashta bandana Maha Samprokshanam on 25 th March 2007, felt the absence of Dwajasthambam and so works in this connection was started on 13 10 2014. Necessary permission from the H.R.& C.E. department Government of Tamilnadu was later obtained and the required teak wood is obtained from the Forest department. Installation of Dwajasthambam will be done initially on 29 6 2015, and subsequently copper plating will be done . Then ,with the blessings of Srimad Andavan and Srimad Azhagiya singer ,it is proposed to perform Sri Ashta bandana Maha Samprokashanam on Friday 21 8 2015, (4

    th Avani ,Manmatha) .

It is our humble request to all devotees to contribute towards this great noble cause and bring the entire kainkaryams successfully. It is estimated that the sum of Rupees Ten lakhs is still needed for conducting this. In continuation of this consecration, Mandalabhishekam for 48 days have to be performed. As the temple is in a village, funds are to be necessarily raised from all affluent bakthas from all over the country, and hence this appeal. . Contributions may be made by draft, cheque or cash in the name of SRI CHATHURBHUJA KOTHANDA RAMAR KAINGARYA SABHA UTC and can be sent to secretary A.J.Sethuraman, A/8 Narangi flats, 51, Thambiah Reddy Street, West Mambalam Chennai 600 033, Tamilnadu, South India (Phone 94445 18810 ) Sarve jana Sukhino bhavanthu A.J.Rangarajan 5 Venkatesh Nagar Main Road Virugambakkam Chennai 600 092 (ph 23771390

SlOkam 9 Tribute to the Lord ViLakkoLi PerumAL as the PrathamAchAryan in the AchArya Paramparai:

In this ninth slOkam, SwAmy DEsikan identifies the Lord as the First among AchAryaas (Aadyam) in the AchArya paramparai and states that those who seek MOksham (Mumukshava:) perform SaraNAgathi at His Sacred Feet as His sishyans (Aadyam Gurum tvAm Mumukshava: shiShyAyitA: sharaNayanti). Our Lord is the Aadhya Guru or the First of all Gurus. The celebration of the AchArya paramparai is very important for us. Starting from SaakshAth AchAryan, it ascends up to Yathi Raajar, SwAmy NammAzhwAr, VishvaksEnar, Periya PirAtti and ends with First AchAryan, the Lord. This AchArya ParamparAnusandhAnam (rememberance and celebration of this AchArya paramparai starting from Sriman NaarayaNan) is a daily anushtAnam (Nithya Karma) for us. That is why we perform the daily anusandhAnam: LakshmInAtha samArambhAm naatha-Yaamuna MadyamAm asmatAcArya ParyantAm vandE guru-paramparAm This slOkam clearly states that our AchArya paramparai starts with Sriya: Pathi and proceeds all the way down to ones present AchAryan. Therefore, Our Lord is the Adhya Guru or PraTamAchAryan in the Guru Paramparai. Rahasya AamnAya Sruthi places emphasis on knowing about the AchArya paramparai for one who seeks MOksham as revealed by SwAmy DEsikan in SrImath Rahasya Thraya Saaram: sa ca Aacaarya VamshO Jn~Eya: AcAryANAm asou asou ityAbagavatta: This rahasyam says: We should pay reverence to ones AchArya, know about his AchAryan and that AchAryans Achaaryan all the way up to BhagavAn, who is the primordial or the First AchAryan in the unbroken chain of AchAryaas (Aadhya Guru). SwAmy DEsikan refers briefly to the 11 ways in which BhagavAn (Sri DhIpa PrakAsan) helps to maintain the vEdantha sampradhAyam. In the first chapter of Srimath Rahasya Thraya Saaram, SwAmy DEsikan has discussed in detail the eleven UpakArams of the Lord for the growth of the vEdantha sampradhAyam. He has also pointed out that the two correct ways for Guruparampara anusandhAnam in the context of recognition of the Lord as PrathamAchAryan in the Guru Paramparai: avarOhana Kramam: When One receives UpadEsam on RahasyArthams from Ones AchAryan and when one instructs others on them, One has to begin the salutations from BhagavAn as the Aaadhya Guru and progress all the way down to Ones own AchAryan. AarOhana Kramam: When One reflects on the RahasyArthams, One should ascend from Ones AchAryan (Yeenuyir tanthaLitthavarai SaraNam pukku) and progress upward all the way to BhagavAn. In both ways, the Mumukshu places the central emphasis on the Lord as the PradhAna or the foremost Guru in the AachArya paramparai. SwAmy DEsikan salutes SrI DhIpa PrakAsan in this ninth slOkam as the Adhya Guru sought by the Mumukshus for their aathma nivEdhanam and referred to His upakArams to sustain and grow the vEdantha SampradhAyam.

I wish to express my gratitude to the authors from whose works I gathered the details for this book, and Jagannath Temple authorities and Courtesy, Google for some of the photographs. Special thanks to www.scribd.com for hosting my e-books.

Nestling on the eastern coast along the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal the unique State of

Orissa offers to her guests a 'tourism capsule' containing magnificent temples, sunny beaches,

colourful wildlife, traditional tribal culture and a rich heritage.

The temple of Lord Jagannath ('Lord of the Universe') - (Oriya language: , ) at Puri is a living and vibrant temple and one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots in India. It is being considered by Hindus as one of the four abodes dhamas of the divine that lie on the four directions of the compass. After the beautiful jagannath temple the city came to be known as Jagannaatha puri. The name Jagannath - Lord of the Universe, is a combination of the Sanskrit words Jagat (Universe) and Nath (Lord of). The temple is an important pilgrimage destination for many Hindu traditions, particularly worshippers of Krishna and Vishnu, and one of the Char Dham pilgrimages that a Hindu has to visit in one's lifetime. The glory of the place is enhanced by the famous Ratha Jatra festival taking place each year, taking one to pure heavenly experience. The city is shaped like the silhouette of a conch shell, which bears the spiritual significance of Jagannath Puri being the abode of the Godhead Vishnu, who carries a conch shell as part of his eternal paraphernalia. In the center of the conch shell silhouette there is a portion of raised ground called Nilgiri or "the blue hill." On the crest of Nilgiri stands an imposing temple complex dedicated to Vishnu as Jagannath, "the Maintainer of the Universe." There are a number works in Sanskrit which sing the glories of Orissa in general and of Puri in particular. A passage is frequently quoted from the Rg Veda and explained in the light of the well-known commentary of Sayana to show that the history of Jagannath dates back to the age of the

Rig Veda itself. The Puranas present elaborate accounts pertaining to the origin of Jagannath in an atmosphere of mystery and divine inspiration. Prominent among the Puranas are the Skanda Purana, the Brahma Purana and the Narada Purana. Even in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, there are references to the shrine of Jagannath. The Pandavas of the Mahabharata are believed to have come here and offered worship to Jagannath. Though historians have been trying to unveil the mystery of the three deities namely, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra worshipped in the Puri temple, reliable materials in historical form are available from the 9th century A.D. when Sankaracharya visited Puri and founded the Govardhana Matha as the eastern dhama of India. The temple was built in the 11th century atop its ruins by the progenitor of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, grandson of the Chola emperor Kulothanga Chola I. The temple is famous for its annual Ratha Yatra, in which the three main temple deities are carried on huge and elaborately decorated chariots. Legendary account as found in the Skanda Purana, and later Oriya works state that Lord Jagannath was originally worshipped as Lord Neela Madhav by a Savar king (tribal chief) named Viswavasu. The Appearance of Lord Jagannath The significance of Jagannath Puri and the story of how the Deities first appeared go back to many hundreds of years to the time of King Indradyumna, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. It is related that one time in his court, the King heard from a devotee about the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, named Nila-madhava. Eager to see this form of the Supreme the King sent many Brahmins to search for Nila-madhava. While all of them came back unsuccessfully one Vidyapati, did not return. He had wandered to a distant town which was populated by the tribal people known as Shabaras of non-Aryan heritage. He had stayed in the house of Visvasu, and later, at Visvasu's request, married his daughter, Lalita. After some time Vidyapati noticed that Visvasu would leave the house every night and return at noon the next day. Vidyapati asked his wife about this. Though her father had ordered her not to tell anyone, she told Vidyapati that Visvasu would go in secret to worship Nila-madhava. Though reluctant, afar repeated requests, Viswasu agreed to take Vidyapati to go and see Nila-madhava, on condition that he should follow blindfolded. But Vidyapati's wife had bound some mustard seeds in his cloth so that a trail could be left to follow later. When they reached the shrine, after Visvasu took off the blindfold Vidyapati saw the Deity Nila-madhava, and he felt great ecstasy. In the meantime while Visvasu was out collecting items for worship, Vidyapati saw a bird fall into the nearby lake and drown. The soul of the bird suddenly took a spiritual form and ascended back to the spiritual world. Vidyapati too wanted to do the same and climbed the tree to jump in the lake. Then a voice from the sky declared that before he jumped he should tell Indradyumna that he had found Nila-madhava.

Sri Vedanta Desikan , the greatest star in the spiritual horizon of SriVaishnava sampradaya Visishtadwaita philosophy after Sri Ramanujar, has dedicated his life for this and acclaimed a lot. His main aim was to establish a firm ground for teachings of both Ramanuja and Nammalwar through his writings both in sanskrit and in Tamil in various forms of drama, poem, lyrics and even in commentaries. As in Taniyan before Desika Prabhandam recitation, ("Oronru thane amaiyadho Dharaniyil Vazhvorkku Vanerap PomaLavum Vazhvu " ) a person who desires to ascend up to the Heavens, even a single statement of the great Acharya, uttered by him for the benefit of humanity would be sufficient to lift him up to his desired goal . When Swamy Desikan authored many precious articles, we can try to understand something in brief from his great stotram 'Kaamaashika Ashtakam'

    Kaamaasikashtakam

Kaamaasikashtakam is with 8 slokas on KamaasikaaNarasimhan(Mukunda Narayanan ) ,presiding deity in Thiruvelukkai. 'Vel'denotes "by One's own

will"'irukkai' is ' seated or located'. Since this place by His own will, it is called 'tiru vel irukkai. ' Kama ' means 'by His own will', Asika' is being seated, ashtakam is with 8 Slokas. In 9th sloka(palasruthi ) he states that if one chants this stotram even once with faith and devotion,he is sure to be forgiven of his sins even if it is huge like elephants, and he is to be bestowed with all benefits he seeks.

In the first sloka itself , Swamy Desikan's Mangala Sasanam conveying as Jeeyath ,says Lord with His lion face and human body and great full of wonders of neither a lion nor man described as 'Kascchith Ascchith Adhbhuta Kesaree ' and He being celebrated in upanishads (last part of vedas) as Srutheenaam Uttaram Bhagam .

He further says as Kaamaasikaa Narasimhan has three eyes, which are in the form of the Sun, Moon and Agni, and He is the only one who can remove our tapa-traya-s, of Adhyatmikam - (physically ill, fear ,anger, desire, fear, etc), Adhi bhaudikam (ills from animals and humans )Adhi daivikam (cold, heat, storm rain ). Lord is the only true relative we all have (bandhum akhilasya

jantoh). His hands compete with one another to protect devotees,

He appeared out of the Pillar in his palace with the frightening swirl for the injustices to His devotee, but with lotus eyes fell with mercy on Prahlaada, showing limitless compassion.

In 8th sloka Swamy Desikan even commands as Tvayi Rakshathi Rakshakai kim Anyai Tvayi Chaarakshathi Rakshakai kim Ananyai and questions as " When You are resolved to protect some one, where is the need to seek the protection of other Gods? When You are resolved not to protect some one, which other God is capable of protecting us? There is no one. Knowing this fundamental truth, I have resolved to offer my saranaagathi at your lotus feet alone that rest at the banks of Vegavathi river".

Thus Saranagathi is well expressed in this stotram in short and sweet

    DHARMA STHOTHRAM

    Arumbuliyur Jagannathan

    Rangarajan

    Part 267.

    Mahaarhah, Svaabhaavyah

Just like 'Govinda' nama in Thirumala hills one can hear 'Varada nama in Kancheepuram. Varada nama is just meant as 'Give us the boon'. Particularly during Garudaseva in Kancheepuram of Sri Varadaraja temple, it is seen that divine namas, many nama sankeerthanams , bajans, recitations of Nalayira Divya Prabhandam, Swamy Desikan Sthothrams are taking place and attracting huge crowd. Devotees praying with a call as 'Varada Varada Varada 'is sure to make the entire place in divine status. When Robert Clive of East India company in AD 1751 was going around Kanchipuram , Sri Varadaraja Perumal Garuda Seva procession was going on. Seeing this, he asked the temple authorities to stop the same immediately. But one priest told him that due to hot weather the deity has to go back to the temple quickly and so they could not stop. Clive then told him that he wanted to know what effect heat that would have on an idol. The priest replied him that Varadaraja is not an idol but a living God. As he had a doubt on Varadaraja, it was later proved by the priest. He just wiped out a small cloth on the back of the deity and found to be immediately in wet towel. Clive felt sorry for his doubt and a necklace was then ordered by him to adore Sri Varada. Also, it is said as Clive was seriously ill on one day and doctors just found no way to save him. As per the advice of one devotee of Sri Varadarajar , Clive prayed Him one night for the recovery. On the next night he became alright in the morning and this gave a huge surprise to all. Arcot Rani's necklace was then gifted to Sri Varadrajar. Thus Sriman Narayana is showering His grace to all those who pronounce His namas, faithfully pray Him and so uttering divine namas are ever safe. Now on Dharma Sthothram.. In 522nd nama Mahaarhah it is meant as one who is worthy of worship in the highest status. Arhaa denotes pooja or worship. Thirumazhisai Azhwar says as Vasithum kettum vanangi vazhopattum poosithum pokkinen pothu. AZhwar says

  • 38

that he spent his time reading about Him, in listening to His praises and exploits, bowing to Him. And also in offering ritual worship and performing puja. Andal in Thiruppavai 8th pasuram says as Devathi devanai sendru naam sevithal, inviting all friends to worship Him. In 21 st pasuram Aatrathu vandu un adi paniuma pole, comparing enemies who had no courage to face anymore ,started worshiping Him. Similar to that everyone started worshipping His feet. Those who believe in the power of the almighty even physically before His devotees or made them experience directly. Sriman Narayana answers the prayer of man through images and responds the submissions made by all . Thirumangai Azhwar in Periya Thirumozhi, 1.3 pasurams on Thiruvathari perumal temple, tells all of us to worship Sriman Narayana right from our youth. Azhwar says old age needs some stick to stand erect and worship. Vision problems, coughing, general health disorders, may cause problems ,when one become old and hence to start worshiping Him from birth is good. Such worshiping the suitable supreme personality is ever useful ., as He is worthy of worship. He is the only worthy Supreme in accepting the submissions of all devotees.

In 523 rd nama, Svaabhaavyah it is meant as one who is ever-rooted in the nature of His own Self. Sriman Narayana is said to be the Uncaused Cause, He is fit to be the master by nature. Thereis no beginning or new to Him and everything is in existence always. Sriman Narayana is to be meditated upon by those who belong to Him. Poigai Azhwar in Mudal Thiruvanthathi, describes in 44th pasuram about the natural features. He assumes the image of what His devotees prefers. He also accepts the name offered by such devotees. Thus he makes all devotees to think of Him always and are able to live in most happy situation. In the same manner ThirumangaiAzhwar in Peria Thirumozhi 6.6.6 pasuram says as Thannale than uruvam payantha thaan . Azhwar tells that Sriman Narayana is one who Himself had created His own image. He is the supersoul , and hE keeps all the three worlds under His control. He is the head of Paramapatham and created Brahma, Vishnu and Siva with His own image. In Mundaka Upanishad 2/2/8 it is said as sarva samsayaa" which meant as By knowing that God, who is an embodiment of cause and effect, the heart's unreal knot as ignorance is united and all doubts are completely removed and all the good and bad deeds are destroyed'. Hence His nature is praised in this nama .

    PARIKKAL NARASIMHAN

SAINT NAMMAZHWAR assumes the form of Parankusa Nayaki or ladylove in his Thiruvaimozhi and one of the incarnations of Lord Narayana, which appealed to him most was that of the half-lion-half-human Narasimha. In one of his poems he explains how the ladylove dances on hearing the glory of Lord Narasimha, sings again and again about His greatness, sheds copious tears and runs around in ecstasy seeking union with Him. One may wonder how this fearful form of the Lord can be appealing to His ladylove but the numerous temples for Lord Narasimha in Tamil Nadu, especially in the northern districts of Chengalpattu, Vellore, Chidambaram and Kancheepuram, only show that He is a much worshiped deity. There are also temples where the Moolavar and Utsavar archa-vigrahas are those of Narasimha and one among them is Parikkal, 23 km from Villupuram Moolavar : Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar

Thayar : Kanakavalli Theertham : Nagakoopam Historical Name : Parakala City : Parikkal District : Viluppuram State : Tamil Nadu Festival: Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January. Temple's Speciality: Sri Narasimha, noted for His fury is generally seen in Vaishnava temples embracing Sri Mahalakshmi seated on His lap. This is the only temple in India where the Lord and Mother are seen embracing each other.

  • 42

Opening Time: The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. Address: Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple, Parikkal, Villupuram. Phone: +91- 99438 76272 General Information: The roof tower above the sanctum (vimana) is known as Ashtakona Vimana. Some pulses are attributed to the Navagrahas (planets) seeking their grace. Wheat for Sun; paddy for Moon; Thuvarai-dal for Mars; green pulse for Mercury; Kadalai for Jupiter; Mochai for Venus; El or black gingely for Saturn; Ulund dal for Rahu and horse gram for Ketu. Prayers : Those having lost their positions and those awaiting promotions in jobs strongly believe that Lord Narasimha would certainly respond their prayers to regain their status. Devotees include the handicapped, those facing obstacles in marriage, those involved in disputes, affected by magic spells and litigations seeking desired boons. Thanks giving: Devotees perform abishek to Lord with oil, milk, curd, green coconut, panchamirtham made of five ingredients, lime, sandal and also offer vastras to Lord Narasimha. They also tonsure here. Also they light Mavilakku, a lamp made of a paste of flour and ghee, perform their ear-boring ceremonies and roll around the prakara known as Angapradikshana. Some organize feeding to the visiting devotees. Greatness Of Temple: While generally, Lord Narasimha is seen embracing Sri Mahalakshmi sitting on His lap, this is the only temple where the Lord and Mother are seen embracing each other. This is to show that Lord Narasimha has shed His fury and graces devotees with all mercy. Veera Anjaneya and Bhakta Anjaney grace devotees together. Devotees light lamps with gingely oil and spread all the nine varieties of pulses in his shrine and write on them their prayers. It is believed that their prayers would be responded. Lord Narasimha faces east in a sitting form. Lord is in a smiling form as Mother is by His side. The temple is famous for secular tradition as people of other religions Muslims and Christian also worship the Lord here without any feeling of discrimination. Sri Anjaneya is seen together with the Lord. As in Srirangam, Lord Varadaraja Perumal is facing south. Important festivals: 10 day Brahmmotsavam beginning from Narasimmha Jayanti each year; 13 days Chithirai Brammotsavam in April-May, drawing huge crowd of devotees; Pennai River festival in the month of Thai-January-February; Magam Garudanadhi in Masi February-March; Tirukarthikai in November-December; Mattu Pongal falling almost January 15, 1 day Panguni Uthiram in March-April are the important festivals celebrated in the temple. During the week-end Saturdays and Sundays, the devotee crowd is huge. Also, Deepavali, Pongal,

  • 43

Tamil and English New Year days, Krishna Jayanthi and Vaikunda Ekadasi are celebrated with special pujas to the Lord

Temple History: A king, Vasantharajan by name was a staunch devotee of Lord Narasimha and wanted to build a temple for his Lord. He organized necessary Yagnas for three nights headed by his Guru Sage Vamadeva. Many kings responded to his invitation and gathered there. When the Yagnas were about to begin, demon Parikalasuran came with his army to destroy the proceedings. The Guru immediately prepared a talisman with the Mantras, Arakshara and Amirthakshara, tied in the hands of the king and hid him in a bush. Yet the demon attacked the king with his battle axe. Rising to rescue His devotee, Lord Narasimha destroyed Parikalasura with all flaming fury. As the Lord destroyed Parikalasura here, the place is called Parikkal. King Vasantharajan begged the Lord to be ever calm to grace the devotees approaching His feet. Lord obliged. Divine Sculptor Viswakarma made the idol which Sage Vamadeva installed here. Lord, with Mother grace the devotees. Due to lack of attention in the years that followed, the idol was covered by an ant-hill. Lord appeared in the dream of a dumb boy and told him that He was covered by the ant-hill. The boy informed his experience to the people, who unearthed the idol and built a new temple. Lord Narasimha and Mother Kanakavalli grace from the sanctum sanctorum and a separate shrine respectively. Sri Anjaneya in two forms Veera Anjaneya and Bhakta Anjaneya graces in a shrine in the northwest corner. Devotees spread paddy in the Anjaneya shrine and write their prayers. They strongly believe that their appeals would be favourably heard. In the corridor-prakara, are shrines for Sri Varadaraja Perumal in north, Vinayaka in south east and Garuda before the temple. The holy spring Garuda theertha is northwest of the place. Quick Facts on Parikkal

    1) 1800 year old Lakshmi Narasimhar temple. Moolar is east facing lakshmi narasimhar. Lord narasimhar is found with His left hand around the Goddess. Also Separate sanidhi for Kanagavalli thayar.

    2) Utsavar is Narasimhar in standing position, with Sridevi and Bhoodevi.

    3) Navagraha Dhosam Parighara Stalam & Prarthana Sthalam- Debts, Enemies and Diseases are said to go away if one offers prayers at this temple

    4) There is a well inside the temple known as "Naga Koopam" and bathing in its water cures one of many ills. Garuda and Gomukhi Theerthams are the other water sources. The holy tree is "Magizham"

    5) two Anjaneya in the same sanidhi. Anjaneya gets the 2nd right of Thirumanjanam after Lord Narasimha (in other temples, Thaayar is the one who gets the Thirumanjanam after the Lord). This This is one of the 8 temples in Tamil Nadu, where Lord Narasimha provided darshan after the killing of Hiranya. 1) Singarakudi near Pondicherry/Cuddalore, 2) Anthili near Thiru Kovilur,

History and Other Informations Vasantharaja ruled this place with his capital at Vriddachalam and wanted to build a temple for Lord Narasimha. Constantly troubled by Parakalasura (said to be a relative of Hiranyakashipu), Vasantharaja undertook a penance here as directed by his Guru. Answering his prayers, Lord

Narasimha is said to have appeared here and killed the Asura.

Having only seen the destructive mood of an angry Narasimha, Vasantharaja invoked the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi to provide darshan with the Lord displaying his softer form.Having only seen the destructive mood of an angry Narasimha, Vasantharaja invoked the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi to provide darshan with the Lord displaying his softer form.

Kanakavalli Thaayar is said to have sat on his lap, cooled him down and provided darshan to Vasantharaja, the Devas and the Rishis at this place. Delighted at the darshan of Lord Narasimha in this form, Vasantharaja requested that this place be named after the asura who provided the king with the opportunity to have a darshan of the Lord.

Hence, this place was referred to as Parikalapuram, which in course of time became Parikkal. While the original temple was built by Vasantharaja using red bricks, lime and wood, it is believed to have been destroyed during the Mughal invasion. The temple that one sees today is said to have been built by Veera Narasimha of Karnataka using granites. Parikkal Lord Narasimha is said to be the Kula Deivam for the Madhwas of Karnataka

    Srimadh Bhagawatham

Sage Romaharshana doesnt behave like a disciple of the divine sage Vyasar! Romaharshana has

learnt many scriptures from Sage Vyasa, including the shastras, the Ithihasas and Puranas but the

education he has obtained from the great Sage Veda Vyasa has not produced good qualities in him.

He has no self-control! He is not humble and vainly considers himself as the authority of all the

scriptures. He has failed to conquer his own mind. The purpose of My incarnation is to kill hypocrites

like Romaharshana who pretend to be religious.

So saying the Lord took a kusa grass and tapped the head of Sage Romaharshana. The sage

    immediately fell down dead.

All the other sages approached the Lord. Alas! they cried. O favorite of the Yadus, we gave him this

high seat and accepted him as the spiritual master. We promised him

long life and freedom from physical pain for as long as this sacrifice continues and he narrates the

    Srimadh Bagawatham.

Oh great sages, do not worry. I have the powers to restore him so that your promise remains intact.

Dear Rama, do that by which the power of your weapon the kusa grass as well as our promise are

It is said that a person takes birth as his own son. Hence, I will transfer your promise to his son. His

son will remain strong, free from pain and lead a long life as long as he narrates the Puranas,

    promised the Lord.

Outwardly the narration seems as if Lord Balarama punished the Sage for a very minor mistake. From

various clues available in the narration like the name of the sage as Romaharshana and the weapon

used by the Lord which is the kusa grass we can see that the actual meaning is quite different.

The following is my own understanding and I havent been able to verify the actual meaning from an

authentic source. From my earlier readings about King Romapada of the Anga country and the

esoteric meaning of the soma sacrifice I understand the above narration as indicated in the following

    paragraph.

Roma is hair which is black at first, but becomes white as we grow old. Romaharshana signifies the

jeevatma or human soul, sinful in conduct at first, but pure afterwards when knowledge is attained. In

Sanskrit, roma, hair, is synonymous with angaja, body-born, which again is synonymous with kama,

desire. Desire can be either bad as shown by the black hair or good as shown by the white hair.

Desire takes birth in one's own mind. The bad desires are due to false ego.

We can examine the above narration in two different ways. The first method shows that Sage

Romaharshana is under the influence of false ego and thus fails to show respect to even the Lord. As

the mind is the seat of ego, the Lord taps the sages head with a kusa grass. The kusa grass indicates

knowledge. It is only with the help of sat-vidhya that the ego can be destroyed. Once the false ego is

killed, the jeevatma is freed from the influence imposed on it by its body. The jeevatma is spiritually re-

born as the son Suta with a purified mind.

    SRIVAISHNAVISM

    Ivargal Tiruvaakku.

    The Lord and His Bhaktas

The Lord is very possessive about His devotees who are very special to Him. Among the various forms of devotion such as worship, prayer, surrender at His feet and so on, rendering service to the devotees of the Lord, hailed as Bhagavata Dharma is considered on a par or even a cut higher that service to the Lord. When His bhaktas are honoured, the Lord is pleased and feels as if He is personally honoured. Likewise the Lord does not brook any harm or dishonour to His devotees. In fact, if anyone errs against Him, it is easy to win His pardon and grace if one is repentant and prays to Him with folded palms. But if someone is guilty of erring against His bhakta, the Lord has no say in the matter, said Sri L. Sampathkumar in a lecture.

Kooresa, a great devotee and disciple to Ramanuja, was born into a prosperous family. His bhakti is reflected in the way he showed hospitality to all those who visited Kanchipuram to have darshan of Lord Varadaraja.

Once two pilgrims from the north on a visit to Kanchipuram to attend the annual Brahmotsava of the Lord had their food at Kooresas house and proceeded towards the temple. On their way they wondered why Kooresa did not wish to attend the Vaikasi festival though he lived nearby.

They thought that maybe he was not so devoted to the Lord. As they stood waiting in the atmosphere filled with devotion and much fanfare, the procession of the Lord mounted on the Garuda came out of the temple. Everyone rejoiced to see the divine sight but the pilgrims were not able to see the resplendent deity. How come their eyes which saw the procession in all detail, could not catch the stately deity mounted on the Garuda?

The Lord made known to the pilgrims through the archaka the fact that they had erred against His bhakta Kooresa by surmising that he lacked bhakti since he did not attend the Utsavas. When they realised their fault, they repented and begged forgiveness of Kooresa. They were then able to behold the deity.
