Indiana itself will be a single CD installThe software that will be on the CD will be restricted to the core operating system, desktop and the package management system. This is very important to emphasise, that rather than try to define the whole OS through one DVD, it will instead be defined through all the repositories used by the package management system. It will come with GNOME and ZFS as the default file system. It will be a lightweight OS.

The Single CD install image is an important feature of Indiana.

This will enable possibilities for the community, and reduce the cost of distributing DVDs to trade shows.

Moreover, it will be about having OpenSolaris appear in localtions where the developer community expect to find it, such as Distrowatch..

Solaris

Project Caiman has been live on OpenSolaris.org for a while.

It will produce a fast and reliable installer with LiveCD functionality (similar to Ubuntu today)It will have ZFS as default file-systemWe are targetting some specific hardware platforms initially and looking for broadened driver support over time.

User will acquire an initial catalog, check on a package of interest and then install the package if desired. The user can then update their catalog and install any updates.

The status of each package will be denoted by UFIX telling you if a package is upgradeable, frozen, already incorporated or excluded.

Sun supported packages will be on sun.comCommunity-supported packages on opensolaris.org

The OpenSOlaris modernisation project made a number of recommendations which Project Indiana will help implement.

Specifically, some features on the command line (which didn't seem important to an enterprise OS, but to a developer OS, do matter) will be addressed.

As noted, the package management will increase the familiarity to the user, who is not used to installing a monolithic OS, or downloading packages the way pkgadd works today.

Cool stack

Cool Stack is a collection of some of the most commonly used open source applications optimized for the Sun Solaris OS platform. By using these binaries you will enjoy the best levels of performance from your system, while also reducing your time-to-service.

Cool Stack has been pre-configured to have the most popular applications (Apache, PHP, MySQL) to work seamlessly out of the box.

SAMP

Sun's optimized Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl/Python stack (Solaris OS + AMP)

So if you look at today's general Web 2.0 architecture and again, all of you have variations of this. You have a very common set of themes you have a set of clients, external resources talking to some type of proxy arrangement, to set of web and application servers that are, in turn, connected to resources for storage and database. And in each of these, we have new software running that we didn't have 10 years ago, and new ways of operating as well as the interconnection between those. In addition, all of those are horizontally scaled so the way that everyone actually builds out their infrastructure is to take these different sets of components, combined in some sort of way, and then horizontally scale them to get the throughput they need for the different kinds of applications as well as scale in bandwidth for storage and computing. This brings in a whole host of technology issues, not the least of which, is understanding what is going on and how to characterize the performance and technical capabilities of these systems.

Minimal hardware requirements

When choosing an operating system, there are many things to consider. Since your distributed web application will likely consist of many different types of software applications running on top of many different types of hardware, its important to minimize the operational overhead of running all these machines. Standardizing on a single login technology (NIS, LDAP, RADIUS, Kerberos, etc) may be one level of acceptable consistency. Alternatively (although not recommended) you may wish to restrict all systems to the same operating system and version.

NFS

We've talked a little about Sun's commitment to open standards and open source but I want to drive this point home: No company has done more to promote industry standards than Sun. And no company has contributed more software to the open source community than Sun. People thought we were crazy back in 1982 when we based our workstations on BSD UNIX, the first open operating system. They thought we were crazy to open our NFS technology to the industry and even to our competitors. Since then we've opened up the whole development stackand helped with the development of many open standards, from Liberty Alliance federation standards to the Mozilla browser to OpenSPARC and OpenSolaris. And it's a funny thing. No one thinks we're crazy now.

Smugmug success with OpenSolaris

Success-with-opensolaris-zfs-mysql-in-production

Im a Linux geek, have been since 1993 (Slackware!). All of SmugMugs datacenters (and our EC2 images) are built on Linux. But the current state of filesystems on Linux is awful, and its been awful for at least 8 years. As a result, weve put our first OpenSolaris box into production at SmugMug and Ive been pleasantly surprised with the performance (the userland portions of the OS, though, leave a lot to be desired).
