Paul Revere’s Ride

Ch 1 -Paul Revere’s America

Paul Revere lived in the 18th century.He was a silversmith and a patriot for

America, who helped set up a system that would warn Americans about incoming British military.

His name was originally Apollos Riviore.Ended up marrying a women named Deborah

HitchbornHad 16 children, of which 5 died.

Paul Revere gained a lot of respect because of his many talents.

Used violence when trying to make a point for their advantage.

Was a well established patriot himself and worked with whigs to make things happen.

Ch 6 - The Warning

Paul Revere was accompanied by William Dawes when they attempted to warn the countryside of the British attack.

Revere traveled by boat to CharlestownDawes traveled by land in a disguiseThe were headed to warn John Hancock and

Samuel Adams.The infamous “The redcoats are coming!” line

was actually “The Regulars are coming out”.

Ch 6 - The Warning

One if by land, two if by sea referred to the lanterns being used as a message. One lantern if the British were traveling by land, and two if by sea.

The steeple of the Old North Church was used for its height and easy visibility.

Revere told all that he met along the way about the British so that they would too ride out and warn others before he had alerted Samuel Adams and John Hancock.

Ch 8 - The Capture

During Revere’s infamous midnight ride, Revere spotted a patrol and prepared to encounter them.

When they charged, more British horsemen came out, and they chased the group (Revere, Dawes and Prescott).

Everyone but Revere got away in the confusion. Revere was captured and taken along with other prisoners

Revere and the other prisoners were kept with the British Regulars until they heard gunfire.

The British took heed of Revere’s warnings, especially when they heard a volley go off and the town bell start to ring.

The British released the captives to run off and warn their superiors.

Ch 9 - The Alarm

There were many other riders that alerted the countryside rather than just Paul Revere.

One courier made it to Tewksbury in record time through the night and the distance.

Previously made alarm signals made it easier to alert the militia, for instance, three gunshots was their alarm.

Paul Revere worked carefully to prepare a successful alarm system that would quickly and efficiently get the militia up and at arms.

It is interesting to point out that news of the British had spread 30 miles from where they had marched.

30 miles was normally a day’s journey in that time.
