The Confucius Institute at The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus is a non-profit

educational institution for Mandarin Chinese language teaching and the promotion of Chinese

culture. It is operated in partnership with Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and China

Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing, China. Officially launched on October 23rd 2013, it is the

first institute of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago, and the second in the Caribbean region.

On October 23rd, at the Daaga Auditorium on the St Augustine Campus, the Confucius Institute was

formally launched in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Winston Dookeran; Chinese

OVERVIEW OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES

In March of 2014, the Confucius Institute formally began teaching language classes on The UWI, St.

Augustine Campus. Since then its teaching activities have expanded beyond its main base in St.

Augustine, and classes are now taught at classroom locations in the city of San Fernando in southern

Trinidad, and in the capital city Port-of-Spain.

In 2016, the Confucius Institute at The UWI St. Augustine offered generic Mandarin Chinese

language courses and Chinese culture courses. In response to the growing interest in Chinese

culture, this year, the Confucius Institute also introduced its Summer Cultural Programme. The

programme consisted of a number of language and culture-based workshops centred on various

topics including learning about Chinese calligraphy, experiencing authentic Chinese food culture

and exploring Chinese culture through music. Mandarin Chinese language teaching was done in two

regular semesters (February to May & September to December 2016).

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, state enterprises and even foreign enterprises in Trinidad

and Tobago have established contact with the Confucius Institute to cooperate in the field of

language teaching and training. The CI trained people from a variety of public and private sectors

ranging from UWI students selected to participate in a Huawei internship to staff of the Office of the

President. The CI was honoured to be contacted by the Office of the President and told that His

Excellency Anthony Carmona hand-selected five (5) staff members to participate in the CI’s

Mandarin 1.1 class. He made this public in his feature address to the country on Trinidad and

Tobago’s Republic Day holiday in September.

A total of 21 classes were opened in the Institute’s three (3) main classroom sites, as well as other

locations in the western and eastern regions of Trinidad and Tobago. Overall, 38% of classes were

held in Port of Spain, 29% on the UWI St. Augustine campus, 9% in San Fernando and 24% classes

in other locations (namely two primary school locations, Fai’s Restaurant and the Wing Sing

Company grocery store), collectively grouped together as “Other” on the chart below.

Since the introduction of classes at the Confucius Institute, the body of registered students has been

primarily composed of members of the public. In 2016, over 70% of students were members of the

public. The majority of students were returning CI students (public), which accounted for 37% of

the student body. New students (members of the public) accounted for 36% of the CI’s student base.

Additionally, this year marked an increase of 6% in the number of UWI staff and students

participating in the Institute’s programmes, namely Tai Chi and Calligraphy classes. Lastly,

approximately 9% of students registered at the CI were local primary school pupils.

特多当地人对中国文化的兴趣和热情越来越高，孔院还特别开展了暑期文化体验项目。该项目

由一系列语言和文化实践课构成，涉及的主题丰富多彩，包括中国书法课、中国饮食文化体验

课和学唱中国歌曲课等。今年的汉语语言课程共分为两个学期（2 月—5 月为第一学期，9 月—

12 月为第二学期）。

特多政府机构、国家企业以及驻特多外企都与孔院建立了语言学习与培训方面的合作关系。孔

院承担了华为公司“种子计划”暑期实习生的汉语集训工作。特多国家主席安东尼•卡尔莫纳阁

下亲自挑选了 5 名总统办公室的工作人员参加孔院的汉语零起点课程，并在 9 月的“共和日”

庆祝演讲中，特别提到总统办公室的员工正在孔院学习汉语。

2016 年，孔院在三个主教学点和其他教学点（特立尼达岛的东部和西部）共开设了 21 个班次

的课程。其中，西班牙港课程数所占比例为 38%；西印度大学校园（圣•奥古斯丁）课程数所占

比例为 29%；圣•费尔南多课程数所占比例为 9%；其他教学点课程所占比例为 24%（包括两所

当地小学，辉记酒家，永盛中国超市），在下图中都归为“其他”一类。

OVERVIEW OF CULTURAL EVENTS

Since its launch in 2013, the Confucius Institute at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus has engaged with

the local community in Trinidad and Tobago by holding a number of cultural events and activities,

including exhibitions, performances, demonstrations, lectures and workshops. Participant and

audience feedback from these events has been overwhelmingly positive.

In 2016, the CI has made the promotion of appreciation for Chinese language and culture a top

priority in hopes of further strengthening the cultural exchange between Trinidad and Tobago and

China. The Institute successfully held a number of cultural and language promotion tours in

Trinidad and Tobago’s primary schools, secondary schools and community centres, such as the UWI

After-School Care Centre, the Atwell’s Educational Institute and the Pequen os Gigantes Learning

Academy and Nursery, thereby further developing the interests of the 5 – 18 age group in Chinese

culture and language learning. Overall, there has been a 13% increase in the number of participants

at events hosted by or in collaboration with the Confucius Institute.

Throughout the year, the Institute also held celebrations to coincide with traditional Chinese

festivals, such as the Spring Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival, which served the purpose not

only of entertaining but also of educating the people of Trinidad and Tobago about the cultural

traditions associated with these festivals. The CI’s two major cultural events held this year were the

Spring Festival Gala and the CI Day. At these two events, the Confucius Institute engaged the local

community (primarily the adult population) on areas such as the celebration of the Chinese New

Year and information on Chinese mythology.

In light of new developments and changes to the provision of tertiary level education in Trinidad

and Tobago, this year’s CI Day event also aimed to enlighten the public about opportunities to

pursue short-term and long-term studies in China through the Mini Education Fair booth. Three

universities from two regions in China (Hubei and Beijing) were highlighted; Wuhan University,

Huanggang Normal University and China Agriculture University. Together with official

representatives from the aforementioned universities, local students who visited and/or studied at

these universities displayed pictures from their visits and gave short presentations on their

experiences.

The Confucius Institute has also introduced a system that allows persons, educational institutions

and business organisations to request consultation at the administrative office on topics related to

Chinese culture, and to borrow from a wide range of cultural items when hosting functions

celebrating Chinese culture. As one of the year’s newest innovations by the Institute, the system has

proved to be quite successful, with the Confucius Institute establishing itself as the first point of

contact for information on China and its culture.

自 2013 年成立以来，西印度大学圣奥古斯丁分校孔子学院一直积极融入特多社会，举办了大量

形式多样的文化活动，包括展览、表演、展示体验、讲座和研讨会等。得到了众多参与者的热

情支持和好评。

2016 年，孔院把提高当地人对中国语言、文化的兴趣作为工作重点，以期为进一步加强中特两

国的文化交流作出贡献。孔院先后在多所当地小学、中学和多个社区中心成功举办多场语言推

广活动，其中包括西印度大学托儿所、Atwell 学校和 Pequen os Gigantes 私立小学等。这些活动

激发并提高了 5 到 18 岁年龄段的学生对中国语言、文化的兴趣。总体上看，今年参与孔院主办

或协办活动的总人数增加了 13%。

2016 年，孔院还举办了多场中国传统节日庆祝活动，包括春节和端午节等。这些庆祝活动不仅

娱乐性强，还向当地人介绍了中国传统节日中蕴含的文化元素。“春节晚会”和“孔子学院日”

是今年两场最大型的文化活动，向特多当地人（主要是成年人）展示了中国人庆春节的传统习

俗，让更多人了解了中国的神话传说。

为适应特立尼达和多巴哥在高等教育方面的改革和新发展，今年孔院工作也突出了向特多学员

介绍赴中国进行长、短期学习的机会。通过孔院日的迷你教育展，展示了西印度大学的三所中

国合作院校: 武汉大学、黄冈师范学院和中国农业大学。

值得一提的是，孔院今年建立并启用了网上申请系统，接受个人、教育机构和商业团体的文化

咨询，并向举办中国文化相关活动的团体出借多种文化用品。这一办公模式的创新，取得了很

大成功，为实现使孔院成为“走进中国和中国文化的第一站”的目标提供了新的平台。

The Confucius Institute at the UWI St. Augustine together with the UWI Sport and Physical Education

Centre (SPEC) organised a dragon boat team, known as the “UWI-CI Dragon Boat team”, to compete in the

11th Annual Dragon Boat Regatta in October 2016. The event coincided with the celebration of the 210th

anniversary of the arrival of Chinese immigrants to Trinidad and Tobago. The administration at SPEC dealt

with the recruitment of students, arrangement or transportation and training sessions for the team, while

the Confucius Institute funded the project.

2016 年 10 月，圣奥古斯丁分校孔子学院与 UWI 体育系组建的龙舟队--UWI 孔子学院队参加了第 11

届特多龙舟赛的角逐。此次比赛恰逢华人抵特 210 周年庆典。体育系积极招募新队员，安排活动，组

织训练和交通，孔院为龙舟队的训练和比赛提供赞助。

In October 2016, Ke Bingsheng, President of the China Agricultural University, received one of three

honorary doctorate degrees from the University of the West Indies for his outstanding contributions

to the field of agricultural development both locally and internationally. His appointment was

In July, Professor Brian Copeland was appointed the new Principal of the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus, replacing Professor Clement Sankat as the Chair of the Confucius Institute Board of Directors.

In October, Professor Tang Jianhua was appointed the new Chinese Director of the Confucius Instiute at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus, replacing Professor Hu Youzhen.
