Gaze across the turquoise water of Sir Francis Drake Channelsouth of Tortola and youll spy one of the last undevelopedprivately held islands in the British Virgin Islands. It rises dreamilyfrom the sea, 250 acres of green hills and steep, rocky cliffs. This isGinger Island, a rare opportunity to create a new escape from theworld that is only a short distance from the areas airport and ferryconnections.

Located between Virgin Gorda and Cooper Island, its hilltops provideextraordinary panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and some 15other islands in the BVI. Large loblolly, tamarind, and cedar trees

cover the low-lying valleys of Ginger Island; the bay side is skirtedin both red and white mangroves and shrubby chaparral. Whilethere are sheer outcrops on the islands outskirts, the developableinterior averages 200-300 feet in elevation with gradual hills thatcould easily accommodate a private estate or small boutique resort.

A beacon sends light from the islands far eastern hilltop, markingthe deep-water passage for larger vessels.

Ginger Islands standout feature is the pair of bays The Sound Bayand Wedgeo Bay which together form a heart on its south sideand are lined by an unspoiled beach. Between the bays sits John

Its a tradition that dates back more than acentury. In rural Canada, a bunkie was oftenfound adjacent to a summer cottage to provideadditional sleeping quarters, while across the American West, bunkies (or bunkhouses, as theywere called) dotted the landscape as makeshiftaccommodations for ranch hands and transientworkers. Small space architecture has always thrilled me, says co-founder NathanBuhler, who with his team designed four distinct bunkie models, eachmeasuring only 106 square feet. Due to its small footprint and lack ofplumbing, no building permits are required, yet the bunkie still managesto deliver a modern aesthetic and ingenious design features. Inspired byDame Zaha Hadids Glasgow Riverside Museum of Transport in Scotland, the bunkie offers a range of innovative design elements, each meticulouslyplanned and pre-fabricated prior to delivery. Made of Canadian r andspruce structural plywood (with additional materials used for the interior),the freestanding structure is out tted with a queen-size Murphy bed andcan be customized to include modular cabinetry and even an ethanol

replace that doesnt require ventilation or a fuel line.

No nishing or painting is needed and a Bunkie crew can assemble the

prefabricated pieces on-site in just a few days. The no-fuss structuresoffer a sense of escape and retreat. The bunkie i s all about fun, offering aplayhouse space for over ow guests that is a piece of architecture versus aclapboard shack, says Buhler.

Whether utilized as a modern, quick solution to an island that has yet tobe developed or as an auxiliary space that can function as an of ce, yogastudio, extra bedroom or beyond, Buhler says, its a separate space thatfeels specialeven when youre waking up on your own private island.

In the southern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, there is placeknown for a collection of islands worthy of royalty: Angra dosReis, the Bay of Kings. Within this coveted area, which is only a2.5-hour drive west of bustling Rio de Janeiro, sits a private 29-acre peninsula that embraces the natural beauty of Brazils coastalwoodlands while providing resort-quality style to its owner.

Only 20 percent of spectacular Praia do Algodo is dedicated todevelopment, preserving a surrounding Atlantic Forest ecosystem

with biodiversity to rival the Amazon. Even the area containing theresidences has an abundance of pupunha palms and other fruit-bearing trees, which attract a variety of colorful birds. In earlymorning and late afternoon, the chatter of mico-estrela (black-tufted marmosets) echoes around the grounds, and sometimesthey scamper near the residences in groups of 10 to 15. Porcupinesmake the rare cameo as well. The compound overlooks 656 feetof private golden beach and an expanse of calm, clear sea wheredolphins and turtles are frequent visitors.

Well-known architects considered the landscape in their project decreating buildings with open oor plans and expansive verandahs thatcomplement the regions year-round balmy climate and seafront The 7,333-square-foot main house looks across a 118-foot in nity pool thatmatches the color of the sea beyond its edge. Its fully equipped with aroom; indoor-outdoor dining room with an extra-long wood table; gkitchen with wood-burning oven and beer tap; and a sauna with a glaoverlooking the water. With its amenities and central position, its perentertaining.

Cozy sleeping quarters are cocooned into the Atlantic Forest in the fthree pairs of 930-square-foot bungalows and a 2,288-square-foot msuite all with patios overlooking the sea and private entrances. An adfour-bedroom, two-bath home with a ranch provides staff quarters. Cconsideration was given to placement of the accommodations to eprivacy for every Praia do Algodo visitor. State service or generatorprovides electricity, and there is water, cable, and internet on site.
