_INSPIRATION
A culturale heritage of creativity and innovation
DA VINCI’S ANATOMYLeonardo Da Vinci and the anatomist Marco Antonio della Torre collaborated in Pavia between 1510 and 1511. Their meetings in the anatomical theatre gave rise to many famous drawings by the Master, detailing the “amazing human body machine”, which at that time was still largely unknown.
VOLTA’S PILEAlessandro Volta carried out his studies on electricity in Pavia, leading to the invention of the Voltaic Pile in 1799, the first generator capable of producing constant energy. The volt, the unit of measurement of the electrical potential difference, was named in his honour.
NOBEL FOR MEDICINEIn 1873 Camillo Golgi invented the optic microscopy technique to allow nervous tissue cells to be viewed by staining the neurons black. Ever since then, neurology has been able to progress. In 1906 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his studies of the nervous system.
THE SPHYGMOMANOMETERIn 1896 the physician Scipione Riva Rocci invented the sphygmomanometer as we know it today. The blood pressure measurement instrument, developed by him in Pavia, soon became the most common and widely used basic medical device. Harvey Cushing, the famous American neurosurgeon, saw this instrument in Pavia in 1901 and introduced it to the United States shortly after, contributing to a decrease in deaths during surgery caused by anaesthesia.
EINSTEIN’S FIRMThe brothers Hermann (Albert’s father) and Jakob Einstein moved to Pavia, the home of the battery. In 1894 they formed a company that was innovative for those times, selling dynamos, arc lamps, ammeters, switches and alternating and direct current. They produced and managed electrical lighting systems, offering a complete service. It was in those years that Albert wrote his first scientific paper: the Pavia Paper.
