Deans Message 7
Deans Message
Dear prospective student,
PolyU Design celebrates its Semicentennial Anniversary in 2014, and
I have the honor and privilege to share this occasion with our
students at the Schools new home at the Jockey Club Innovation
Tower. It is one of the most exceptional design educ ation environments
in the world today.
Students of our society have received many years of left-brain training
throughout their primary and secondary education, but our currentbusiness and social environments are demanding a lot more right-brain
qualities than our previous generations in order to innovate. Innovation
requires leaders with qualities such openness, empathy, and the quest
for meaning in order to make the b est out of a team of diverse
professional backgrounds and cultures. These are the very characteristics
that you will build during the design process. A thriving future belongs
to a very different kind of mind, and with a degree in design, you will play
a dominant role in innovation.
We envision design as a goal-directed conversation among different
disciplines between public and private sectors. Our faculty members
work with experts from other domains within and outside PolyU, in areas
as varied as business, mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering,
computer engineering and computer science, textiles science, health
informatics, social sciences, and hotel management to analyze user and
societal problems and identify opportunities for social and economic
improvement. With the Jockey Club Innovation Tower as a catalyst, our
students will be able to benefit from the knowledge generated from such
collaborative activities.
PolyU Design is an international community of outstanding stud ents,
faculty, staff, and alumni. You can be part of this great tradition.

Interaction Design
Aims
This specialism seeks to enhance human ability and life through the
design of innovative, interactive and experiential ideas, based on
a synthesis of human thought patterns and habits with technical means.
A combination of theory, planning strategies, research and technical
skills provide the foundation for workshops that explore emerging
aspects of interaction design, based on human needs and pleasures
as well as technological development.
Characteristics
The Interaction Design specialism is directed at students with a passion
for people and technology, who have curiosity about the future and
want to shape how information is accessed and used, how environments
might change based on need, or how embedded information
in products support use. T hose with a Bachelors degree in design
(visual communication, product, digital media, or environmental design),
communication, information technology, or even psychology may find
interaction design to be the next step in their professional development.
Program Structure
The specialism is structured by a combination of intensively taught short
courses that directly support a workshop investigation. Workshops take
various forms from individual to team work and from self-initiated projects
to externally sponsored projects. A range of electives are available to
tailor the experience to individual interests. The expectation is that
the student is fully committed to the program and works in the studio
environment. The specialism concludes with a demonstration project that
unites research, creative exploration, user understanding and prototype
testing towards a solution.
core subject and some shared electives that are delivered on weekday
evening and weekends respectively. Each of the weekend subjects
requires 3 weekends spread over 45 weeks. It normally takes 1 year
to complete the specialism.
Core Areas of Study

putting people first in the people/technology equation exploring human-centeredness;
understanding active communication processes on whichinteractivity is built;
learning methods for analysis and construction of interaction design; working across communication technology, product interfaces,
and service systems;
focusing on one of the above as an alternative focus; and developing a holistic approach to human-centered interaction that
includes problem or opportunity identification, research, prototyping
and execution.

International Exchange
The international exchange program is an opportunity for stu dents to experience
studying abroad, outside of their habitual cultural context. It aims to develop students
understanding and good will while strengthening cultural ties. International students
visiting Hong Kong can participate in our design studio work and study a large variety
of subjects offered by our different disciplines.
Our studio studies are fast-paced, focusing on experimentation and development of good
design sense. Hong Kong is in c lose proximity (45 minutes to the mainland border)
to Chinas largest industrial cities in the Pearl River Delta. Studying at PolyU makes it ideal
to understand this fast growing economy.
Work-Integrated Education
PolyU Design promotes the professionalism of the design industry by placing students
in real-life situations. The Work-Integrated Education (WIE) program involves work-based
learning experiences that take place in an organization context relevant to a students
profession, or the development of generic skills that will be valuable to the profession,
through internship subjects and co-operative projects involving commercial partners.
Students will obtain working experience in a real-life environment and better appreciate
what they learn in class, integrate theory with practice, enhance all-round development
and to make better career plans.
SDWorks
SDWorks is a unique business platform marketing the work of our students. It was
established to turn the student projects with great commercial potential into reality,
instead of leaving them ended as the course is completed. Together with the students,
SDWorks helps to develop and refine their ideas into real world products. It manufactures
the designs on site or license to industrial partners.

In the past, design was widely confined to the functions of styling,
packaging and other forms of superficial differentiation. In the
context of the changes taking place in design, it is of critical
importance that PolyU Design provides a bod y of research,
methodology and practice to support an expansion of design
theory and practice in the crucial dimension of social innovation.
The Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation was
established in 2011 to become a third space in the Hong Kong
