Population

• Population - is an interbreeding group of the

same species within a given geographical area

• Gene pool - the collection of all alleles in the

members of the population

• Population genetics - the study of the

genetics of a population and how the alleles vary

with time

• Gene Flow - alleles can move between

populations when individuals migrate and mate

• Population genetics = application of genetic

principles to entire populations of organisms

• Subpopulation = any of the breeding groups within

a population among which migration is restricted

• Local population = subpopulation within which

most individuals find their mates

GENETIC VARIATION

• The ultimate source of genetic variation is

differences in DNA sequences. Most of those

genetic differences do not affect how individuals

function.

• Some genetic variation are:

– Associated with disease,

– Others improves the ability of the species to survive

changes in the environment.

• Genetic variation, is the basis for evolution by

natural selection.

Heterozygote Superiority

Heterozygote superiority = fitness (measurement of

viability and fertility) of heterozygote is greater than that

of both homozygotes

When there is heterozygote superiority, neither allele

can be eliminated by selection

In sickle cell anemia, allele for mutant hemoglobin is

maintained in high frequencies in regions of endemic

malaria because heterozygotes are more resistant to

his disease

The Hardy-Weinberg Principle

• Used to describe a non-evolving

population.

• Shuffling of alleles by meiosis and

random fertilization have no effect on

the overall gene pool.

• Natural populations are NOT expected

to actually be in Hardy-Weinberg

Estimate frequencies of autosomal dominant

and recessive alleles in a population

Detect when allele frequencies are shifting in

The Hardy–Weinberg Principle

G. H. Hardy, an English mathematician, and G.

Weinberg, a German physician.

They pointed out that the original proportions of

the genotypes in a population will remain constant

from generation to generation, as long as the

following assumptions are met:

1. The population size is very large.

2. Random mating is occurring.

3. No mutation takes place.

4. No genes are input from other sources

(no immigration takes place).

5. No selection occurs.

5 Assumptions of the H-W Principle

1. Large population size- small populations have fluctuations in allele

frequencies (e.g., fire, storm).

2. No migration- immigrants can change the frequency of an allele

by bringing in new alleles to a population.

3. No net mutations- if alleles change from one to another, this will

change the frequency of those alleles

5 Assumptions of the H-W Principle

3. Random mating- if certain traits are more desirable, then individuals with those traits will be selected and this will not allow for random mixing of alleles.

4. No natural selection- if some individuals survive and reproduce at a higher rate than others, then their offspring will carry those genes and the frequency will change for the next generation.
