The King’s College London Pre-University Summer School Welcome to the 2014 Pre-University Summer School. This year will be our largest, most exciting and diverse programme to date, with over 100 high school students coming from 35 countries around the world.

This short guide provides details of what you need to think about, how you can prepare and what to expect from the programme. This is the start of your preparations. Hopefully the guide will cover everything you need to know, but if you think of other questions you would like to ask, please feel free to contact the team on + 44 (0)20 7848 1533. Our office is usually open Monday to Friday from 10:00 – 18:00. Alternatively you can contact us by email at [email protected]. The final programme and full student orientation will be provided at the Opening Event on Monday 28 July.

Congratulations on being selected to take part in this year’s Pre-University Summer School. We look forward to welcoming you to the College.

What to expectThe Pre-University Summer School is an intensive academic and social programme aimed at high-achieving high school students.

The Summer School provides the opportunity to explore an English university experience and life in central London, while also helping you to develop the skills needed in preparation for academic study and university life. The programme also aims to develop personal skills, including communication, teamwork, negotiation, and time management through the academic and social programme of activities. Many students find the programme an enriching experience and leave us with a better sense of themselves, their future and as well as a set of new friends from around the world to stay in contact with.

As a participant on the Summer School, you will: Attend a two week programme of academic classes and academic excursions

including a minimum of 38 hours class contact in a chosen subject area: Global Health, Global Leadership, Global Politics or International Law;

Take part in academic development sessions;

Page 3: Pre university handbook 2014

Undertake private study and academic coursework to develop knowledge in the chosen subject area;

Have access to the library and its resources; Take part in a full and varied social programme which will take advantage of the

College’s central London location; Enjoy a weekend excursion out of London.

Preparation for the programmeBefore you make travel arrangementsThe Pre-University Summer School is a fully residential programme. All students are required to check into accommodation on Sunday 27 July and our usual check-in time is from 14:00. All students are required to check out of accommodation on Saturday 9 August and our usual check-out time is from 14:00. An early or late check-in may be possible but must be agreed in advance. You will be able to store luggage at the accommodation if necessary.

Don’t forget the programme fee includes a collection and drop off service to welcome you upon arrival and to ensure you meet your return journey arrangements. . You will shortly be contacted to provide us with your travel details/arrival information:

If you live outside UK and arriving by plane then our preferred airports are Heathrow or Luton due to their popularity, location and proximity to the campus.

If you are arriving by train or Eurostar, then our preferred station is St Pancras International or King’s Cross.

If you are based in London then we will arrange to collect you from your house.

Please note that we cannot accommodate students arriving earlier or leaving later than the agreed programme dates. If students wish to arrive earlier than 27 July or leave later than 9 August then they must make independent arrangements as the College cannot take responsibility for students outside of the agreed programme dates; we hope you understand our position. Please contact us for further advice if this affects you.

Arrangements for Sunday 27 JulyIf you are due to arrive before 12:00 or after 17:00 on Sunday 27 July please inform the office; it is not necessarily problem, we just need to know in advance. We aim to have an informal briefing session followed by a group dinner from 17:00 so if you

Page 4: Pre university handbook 2014

are due to arrive after 17:00 then please let us know. Please do not worry if you are unable to arrive before 17:00 as the official welcome and orientation takes place the next morning.

VisasIf you are not an EU national it is important that you check any visa requirements and that you are eligible for a trip to continental Europe, and that visa restrictions do not apply. If you need a visa support letter please let us know as soon as possible.

What to think about or arrange in advanceTravel insurance:We strongly advise you not to bring very valuable personal items. The College cannot take responsibility for items that are lost, broken or stolen during the Summer School. If you do wish to bring valuable items then please arrange suitable insurance cover.

Medical arrangements:The programme offers standard medical expenses cover in the event of emergency but it is essential that you ensure you have appropriate cover for your own individual circumstances and we suggest you gain professional advice on this matter if required.

If you are on any specialist medication then you need to bring copies of any relevant or appropriate medical records and an adequate supply of any required medication. If a medical condition may affect your time on the Summer School you can inform the Summer School staff; any information will be held in the strictest confidence. If you live outside the UK please remember that not all medications are available or advised in the same way in the UK as in other countries.

Please ensure that you are up-to-date with vaccinations. Please consult your doctor or seek medical advice prior to starting the Summer School. You should bring copies of any vaccination certificates you have with you.

Disability:If you have a long-term physical or mental health condition, learning difference, such as dyslexia, or other condition that impacts on day-to-day activities then please let us know. We should be able to make appropriate provision, but it is important that we are made aware in advance if possible.

Page 5: Pre university handbook 2014

If you wish to find out more information or to speak with an advisor outside of the Summer School you can also contact our Disability Student Support Office at: [email protected] / http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/services/disability/index.aspx

Clothing:There is not an official dress code but you may wish to bring some smart-casual clothes in the event of more formal academic excursions, and we will also be holding a special farewell evening event on the last day so you may want to bring something for this event.

As there will be a lot of walking throughout the programme comfortable walking shoes or trainers are essential. Finally, please remember the golden rule with London weather: be prepared! We recommend you bring an umbrella or rain coat – even during the summer.

Mobile phones: All students will be required to provide us with a mobile contact number while on the programme so that we have means to contact you if needed and in the event of emergency. We strongly advise that you bring a mobile phone with you for use during the Summer School, or alternatively you can purchase local SIM cards or cheap mobile phones locally in London. If you intend to bring a mobile phone, please be sure to bring your phone charger, as well as a suitable adaptor.

Money:You are advised not to bring too much money with you to the Summer School. The residential programme is fully inclusive so the only reason you may wish to bring additional funds is for your own spending money or additional food/drink outside meal times. It is advised however that you do have access to funds in the unlikely event of emergency.

Laptops and tablets:If you have a personal laptop or tablet then it is your decision whether you bring this to assist you with your academic work as well as perhaps contacting friends/family at home. We are not requiring students to have a laptop or tablet, and certainly not suggesting buying one specifically for the Summer School as students will have access to the computers in the library. Please always ensure that if you do bring a laptop or tablet that it is covered by appropriate insurance.

Items for your room:

Page 6: Pre university handbook 2014

Every room is provided with bedding and towel. It is strongly advised to bring an alarm clock. You may wish to bring a hairdryer if you use one as there are none available in the hall. Unless you want to bring an extra towel, you should have no need to bring any additional items for your room.

Next steps and documentation: All participants will be required to complete and return a set of documentation that will help us prepare for arrival and to ensure we provide a happy, safe and secure environment.

All documents will require a signature from the parent/guardian and the student/applicant. These documents will be sent by email in early June.

AccommodationAccommodation is based at our Stamford Street Apartments, which during term time is occupied by King’s students so offers a chance to experience how university students live. The accommodation is arranged into single sex apartments and blocks and each student will have their own bedroom, containing a bed, en-suite bathroom (including a toilet, shower and sink), wardrobe, desk and drawers and a small fridge for storing small items of food/drink. Every room will have bedding and a towel.

The accommodation has its own service team who will help with any issues that may arise during your stay and there is 24-hour security. There will also be a team of Pre-University Ambassadors on hand throughout the programme, including overnight in accommodation.

Food and drinkAll meals are included as part of the residential programme fee. While on campus students will be issued with a meal card for use for breakfast and lunch. This will allow them to choose their own food for breakfast and lunch and manage their own spending as there is an allowance of £6 per meal. Set meals will be provided in the evening which will offer a variety of food selections and cuisines. The meals will either be provided on campus or off-campus in London restaurants.

A selection of vegetarian food will be available at all meal times. However if there are any specific dietary or religious requirements for food please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

TransportAll travel during the programme is included as part of the residential programme fee. This includes all travel within London and the weekend excursion. The only travel that would be required to be paid for independently is to/from London at the start and end of the programme. All students will be supplied with a London travel card for journey within London.

Supervision and securityThe Pre-University Summer School is fully staffed 24 hours a day for the duration of the programme, including staying overnight with the students in the accommodation. Throughout the programme students will be led, guided and supervised by a group of specially selected and trained Pre-University Summer

Page 8: Pre university handbook 2014

Ambassadors (current King’s students). All staff will have undergone appropriate safety and security checks in advance of working on the programme.

In addition to the Pre-University team the College has a range of support staff to help the students if required during their time on the programme; this includes welfare, medical and counselling staff that can provide impartial support and assistance.

London is a relatively safe city, however due to the central London location of the College and its accommodation; students will not be allowed to leave campus unsupervised at any time during the programme, either day or night. This will be an absolute requirement of the programme and central to the Code of Conduct which all students and parents/guardians must agree to in advance. This means that students would not, for example, have the opportunity to go shopping or sightseeing on their own.

Health and fitness levels Due to the central location of the College and the intensive nature of the programme, all participants are required to have a suitable level of health and fitness to cope with the demands of the programme. A health and fitness declaration will be sent in advance to all students but it is important that we are made aware of any medical or health conditions which may impact on the day-to-day involvement of the student. This is as much for their full enjoyment of the programme as it is for any arrangements we may need to make.

We should be able to make appropriate provision but it is important that we are made aware in advance if possible. If you do not advise us in advance, or are not able to then you should speak to a member of staff when you arrive.

If you wish to find out more information or to speak with an advisor outside of the Summer School you can also contact our Disability Student Support Office at: [email protected] or see their website athttp://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/services/disability/index.aspx

The social programmeA full and varied social programme is included as part of the programme fee. This will include a range of events, excursions and activities which will take advantage of our central London location and will include activities such as: an evening of bowling, local historical walking tours, a theatre evening, an evening of circus and cabaret and a farewell dinner and disco down the River Thames at night.

Page 9: Pre university handbook 2014

The highlight of the social programme is our 3 day excursion to the heart of England. Leaving after class on Friday we will take a professionally guided excursion to Oxford University, Warwick Castle, Stratford-Upon-Avon (the birthplace of Shakespeare), Bath and Stonehenge. Housed in a Georgian Mansion, which we will have exclusive use of, the Saturday night will include a live band, karaoke and dinner in the grounds of the Mansion.

Participant’s Code of Conduct: what is expected of the student Participating in the Pre-University Summer School will be very different from school. King’s College London wants every student to benefit from the experience so all participants will be expected to show responsible behaviour, as well as respect for the rights of other students and Summer School staff.

All students and their parents/guardian will be required to sign a Code of Conduct in advance which will cover the following rules and regulations including: Students are not allowed to leave the Summer School site or programme of

activities without the permission of appropriate Summer School staff; Students are expected to attend all timetabled activities; There will be separate male and female accommodation areas and students are

expected to be in their rooms at specified times (which will be indicated on the first day);

The purchase and use of alcohol is prohibited at all times while on the programme.

In the event of serious incidents of misbehaviour, such as fighting, abuse of any kind or the use of illegal substances, the student(s) concerned will not be allowed to continue on the Summer School and their parents/carers will be contacted for withdrawal from the programme. It will then be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to make arrangements for collection from the College and for travel home.

The College will accept no liability or cost associated with removal from the programme as a result of breaking the Code of Conduct or in the event of serious incidents of misbehaviour.

The Experience England weekend: The Heart of Jolly Old England

Page 12: Pre university handbook 2014

The annual Pre-University weekend away takes place from 1 – 3 August and this year heads to the county of Warwickshire, nicknamed the ‘Heart of England’. Travelling by coach and led by experienced tour guides throughout the weekend, the objective of our trip away is to get a sense of England’s culture and heritage as we visit celebrated places of historical importance. It will be interesting, engaging and fun!

Friday 1st August 2013After classes finish on the Friday, we will first head to the famous university town of Oxford. Here we will take a guided stroll through medieval alleyways following in the footsteps of illustrious former students from Nobel Prize winning scientists to international film stars. There will be a visit to one of the colleges to get an atmosphere of student life and we will see university buildings that have doubled as film sets such as for the Harry Potter series.

After our visit to Oxford we will travel to our home for the weekend where we will have exclusive use of a magnificent Georgian mansion, close to Stratford upon Avon, the home of William Shakespeare. The mansion is set in its own picturesque gardens giving students the chance to relax with new friends.

Saturday 2nd August 2014After breakfast we call in on Anne Hathaway’s cottage and discover where the young William Shakespeare courted his future bride Anne Hathaway at her picturesque family home. Our next stop will be at Warwick Castle. Historically this was one of the most influential aristocratic power bases, profoundly affecting the ‘Wars of the Roses’ and ultimately playing a part in bringing the Tudors to the throne. Today the past comes back to life as we get the chance to witness working siege machines, sword fighting knights in

Page 13: Pre university handbook 2014

shining armour and jousting. Afterwards we will head to Stratford-upon-Avon to meander streets known to the Bard and enjoy some free time.

Back at our weekend base we have an evening of games and activities that will hopefully get us hungry for a traditional English roast dinner which will be served at our house. Later that evening we go into full party mode with a live music band and karaoke.

Sunday 3rd August 2014An early breakfast and we are off to one of the loveliest English cities: Bath. On arrival we will take a guided walk to enjoy the gorgeous Georgian architecture and perhaps imagine ourselves characters in a Jane Austen novel. Bath may have been the high society destination of choice in the 18th century but it was also an important spa in Roman times and we will pay a visit to see the complex where natural spring waters still fill the ancient pools. Our next stop will be Stonehenge. On board our coaches we will get the background from our guides, setting the scene for our visit to historic Stonehenge. Here, in a time before written history, huge rocks were moved in unfathomable effort and positioned by bare hand to stand in circle formation. Their purpose has been the subject of debate for centuries and to this day it remains an unsolved mystery. The journey home will be a chance to swap theories and reflect on all the events of a good weekend.

We return back to King’s on Sunday evening, ready for an early night and the last week of the Pre-University Summer School.

The Experience England weekend, including all tours and activities, accommodation, main meals and transport are included within the programme fee and at no extra charge.
