E-COMMERCEThammasat centre to help small firmsOnline plans drafted, prospects analyzedChareon Kittikanya

Thammasat University has opened an e-commerce centre to help draft business plans for small businesses that want to go online at a modest cost.

The Thammasat Centre of E-commerce will also serve as an incubator for small and medium-sized firms. Initially, it aims to serve about 20 SMEs per year.

Lecturers in commerce and accountancy have partners from different sectors including policy makers and software firms.

The center’s institutional advisers include Manu Leophairote, the permanent secretary for Industry; and representatives from the Revenue Department, SME Development Institute, the Kenan Institute Asia, the Market for Alternative Investment and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre [Nectec].

The private partners are Oracle, Velocall, PrivyLink, Samart Corp, and Jasmine Internet. Bank of Asia agreed to provide loans while Point Asia Advisory will provide venture capital for the centre.

“The centre’s objective is to offer affordable professional services to Thai SMEs,” said Asst Prof Kitti Siripallop, the director.

The service would analyze the viability of e-commerce plans to ensure that complains bought only the essentials and knew their likely potential once online, he said.

The service would be cheaper than private consultants, he claimed.

Arnat Leemakdej, the associate director, said that as a state institution the centre guaranteed neutrality and, with its partners, would freely suggest which applications best would be tailored to the customers’ demand.
