  • The Weekly Parsha

    Midei Shabbos Beshabbato —

    Selections by HaRav Eliezer Chrysler

The moment Pinchas’ mission came to an end, he cast the two sinners down, and they died on the spot.

(Raising his eyes Heavenwards), he proclaimed before the Master of the World, “Is it possible that on account of these, twenty-four thousand people should die?’ Immediately, the Divine Mercy enveloped Hashem (Kevayachol) and the plague was removed from on the B’nei Yisrael!

THE LINGERING CURSE “Balak took Bil’am and he brought him to

Bamos Ba’al” (22:41). Later, he took him up to S’dei Tzofim, and after that to the top of Pe’or. What did Balak see to take him to three places, and to build in each place seven altars, on each of which he brought a bull and a ram (forty-two sacrifices, all in all)?

In keeping with the adage that G-d does not withhold the reward from any creature, the Rosh heard the following: As a result of these sacrifices, G-d decreed that forty-two people from Yisrael had to die. Only Moshe prayed that it should not take place during his lifetime. This was granted, and Moshe handed the tradition over to Pinchas, who handed it to Eli, from whose hands it was passed down to Shmuel, then to David, to Eliyahu and to Elisha, Eliyahu’s disciple.

Elisha once went to Yericho, where the source of water was infected, causing child-lessness. So he brought a flask containing water and salt, which he poured into the infected water source, which immediately became sweet (a miracle within a miracle).

Now, there were a number of youths in the vicinity who earned their Parnasah by transporting water from other areas for the inhabitants of Yericho. And when they saw how Elisha had repaired the local source of water, depriving them of their income, they followed him out of town, shouting “Get out, baldie, get out baldie! Because you turned the place into a bald patch (leaving us without Parnasah).”

Elisha turned round, and saw at a glance, that they were devoid of the smallest Mitzvah, and what’s more, their mothers became pregnant with them on Yom-Kipur. And it occurred to him that this was a golden opportunity for the ancient decree to be fulfilled. So he prayed to G-d to fulfill it. Immediately, two bears emerged from the

forest nearby, and killed the youths, all forty-two of them!

THE WORD AND THE SWORD “If only I had a sword in my hand I would

kill you” (22:29), said Bil’am to his ass. This was most demeaning in the eyes of

Balak’s officers, comments Rashi. Here was a man on his way to curse an entire nation, yet to kill an ass he required a sword!

The question arises, why indeed did Bil’am require a sword? Why could he not kill his ass with the same curses that he intended to utter against Yisrael?

The Ba’al ha’Turim resolves this problem in Pasuk 23, where, commenting on the words “and Bil’am struck the ass with his stick,” explains that he did not curse it because he had in mind to curse Yisrael that day, and two curses cannot take effect on the same day.

Besides, he adds, we know that Bil’am’s ability to curse was confined to the one split second each morning, when the comb of the rooster turns white, as Chazal have taught us. And presumably, that was not the time of day on which this episode took place.

The second explanation would certainly explain the officers’ disgust. It would certainly cast grave doubts on Bil’am’s cursing powers, if they were indeed so limited.

BIL’AM AND THE ROOSTER “And so says the man whose eyes are

closed” (24:3). The word for “man” that the Torah uses

here is “Gever,” which often refers to a rooster, the Ba’al ha’Turim observes.

Indeed, he points out, there are a number of similarities between Bil’am and a rooster: firstly, because Bil’am, just like the rooster, which is the most promiscuous of all the animals, was the most promiscuous of all men (even going so far as having relations with his ass). Secondly, he had the ability to discern the exact fraction of a second when G-d was angry each morning — just like a rooster (whose comb turns white at that exact moment). And thirdly, Bil’am, just like a rooster, stood on one leg (because he was lame in the other one).

Summer Art Classes The shul is offering a summer art class in

basic drawing for men and boys Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, June 27-August 8.

Taught by Jonathan Raun, it is designed to improve technique and the understanding of the drawing process.

For more information, contact Jonathan at 410-243-2691, [email protected].

The Nancy Taffel Annex The Nancy Taffel Annex is now available

for meetings, shiurim, and special functions. Please contact Eileen Rosenbaum at 410-764-8443 or [email protected] to schedule.

The Annex is not meant for heavy food events, children’s events or unsupervised teen events. Anyone under 20 must be in the company of an adult. Please leave the room in the condition you found it or better. Thanks for doing your part to make our shul a wonderful place to grow and learn!

For Our Loved Ones Who Are Ill If you have a loved one who is seriously ill,

and you wish to have Tehillim recited on their behalf, please contact Rena Levi, 410-358-4817. If, in the past, you have put someone’s name on our Tehillim list and that person’s status has since changed, please let Rena know so we can keep our list current.

Our Women’s Tehillim group meets every Sunday morning from 10 to 10:45 in the Nancy Taffel Annex. Please join us if you can.

Mishnayos Mishna and Neshama have the same letters

and so are connected with each other. For this reason we study Mishnah in memory of the departed, as a source of merit for their souls.

We have a tradition each year of studying mishna in the memory of Max and Zachariah Komet and all of our brothers and sisters killed by terrorists in Eretz Yisroel. When all of mishna has been studied we have a siyum. The deadline for finishing mishnayos is fast approaching.

If you would like to be a part of this seudas mitzvah and help to sponsor the siyum, please contact Moshe Cohen.

  • Focus on Tanach If you haven’t already signed up for a

parsha or book of Tanach, it’s not too late. We would like to complete all of Tanach, as a community, with each family or individual learning a book from Tanach or a parsha from the Torah. There can be overlap, as long as we finish Tanach as a shul. To join the other shul members, just pick a parsha. Once you’ve decided on a parsha, sign up. Then take a Shabbos afternoon (or any other time) to study it. If you want, we’ll even supply someone for you to study with.

Yahrzeits Giving tzedakah in the name of the

departed has the power to elevate their soul. When you give charity on behalf of your loved one, consider giving to Tiferes Yisroel.

And may the soul of your loved one be bound in the bond of life, together with the souls of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov; Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah; and together with the other righteous men and women in Gan Eden.
