Isla de origen volcánico que se eleva a 3.000 metros so-bre el fondo oceánico. Su superficie basal tiene forma de trapecio y es 50 veces su área emergida. En cada vérti-ce, producto de erupciones volcánicas, se localiza un vol-cán principal: el Poike al este (3 millones de años), el Rano Kau en el sur (2 millones de años) y el Maunga Terevaka en el norte (200.000 años). Además existen cerca de 104 centros eruptivos en forma de cráteres, conos y domos.

An island of volcanic origin, which rises 3.000 meters above the floor of the sea. Its base has trapezoid form and covers an area 50 times as large as the area above the surface of the wa-ter. In each corner, as a result of volcanic eruptions, there is a major volcano: Poike to the north-east (3 million years old), Rano Kau in the south (2 million years old), and Terevaka in the north-west (200.000 years old). There are also another 104 eruptive centers in the form of craters, cones and domes.

For many years we have heard occasional references to a certain construction with two statues which was supposed to have been installed on the upper rim of a formation called “Kari Kari “, that 400 meter (1640 feet) wide rock face that can be seen on the southern end of the enormous crater Rano Kau,

and which occupies a tenth of the entire circumfrence.

This monument – small when compared to others on the Island – would have been the mythical Ahu Riki Riki, where the statues were oriented toward the setting sun for a reason that is today unknown. In addition to a traditional “Patautau” (a poem for reciting), which even in its cryptic or allegorical language gives us some valuable information, we give the most credibility to two of our most respected sources, the late José Fati and the great musicologist Kiko Paté, who on different occasions assured us that they had, in their childhood, seen the traces of that construction.

From antiquity, the old traditions of Polynesian have been transmitted orally. This ancient use of language has allowed people to remember happenings and events, which, given the special characteristics of their moment, upset the

normal routines of the community, causing such profound reactions that they transcend time to become perpetuated in the common lore. We find in this Rapanui vocal art, the following “Patautau”, or recited text, which tells of the existence of the Ahu and describes its deliberate destruction. That vandalism is attributed to the daughters of someone named Toría-Hoiata, who finished the destruction by overthrowing the statues Ko Uohu and Ko Hanga before departing in the direction of Hiva...

Por largos años hemos escuchado referencias que van y vienen acerca de una cierta edificación con dos estatuas que habría estado instalada en el reborde superior del llamado “Kari Kari “, aquella escotadura o muesca geológica de unos 400 metros de amplitud, que se observa en el extremo sur del enorme cráter o caldera del volcán Rano Kau y que ocupa un décimo

de toda su circunferencia.

Tal monumento - de tamaño menor comparado con otros - sería el mítico Ahu Riki Riki, cuyas estatuas habrían estado orientadas hacia el poniente con algún propósito desconocido hoy en día. Aparte del “Patautau” (poema recitado) guardado por la tradición, que aún en su lenguaje críptico o alegórico proporciona detalles valiosos, le otorgamos la mayor credibilidad a dos de nuestros más respetables informantes: los ya fallecidos José Fati y el gran musicólogo Kiko Paté, quienes en ocasiones diferentes nos aseguraron haber divisado en su infancia

vestigios de aquella edificación.

Desde muy antiguo las viejas tradiciones se transmiten oralmente en la Polinesia. Esta práctica inmemorial y vernácula permite conservar sucesos y episodios que en su momento – dadas sus especiales características – trastornaron las rutinas propias de la comunidad, provocando sentimientos tan profundos que trascendieron su época para terminar perpetuándose en el tiempo. Encontramos dentro del arte vocal rapanui el siguiente Patautau o recitativo cuyo texto habla de la existencia del ahu y describe la destrucción deliberada del monumento. La eventual salida de un Moai para ser llevado a París en el año 2010, ha dividido a la comunidad de Rapa Nui entre quienes defienden el llamado “Viaje de la Luz” como manera de promocionar a la isla en el mundo, y los que se niegan a autorizar la salida de otra pieza arqueológica más.  El debate incentiva una revisión de todo el patrimonio arqueológico de Rapa Nui en museos y colecciones privadas de todo el mundo. Ida Luz Hucke Atan, más conocida como “Piru”, ha dedicado parte de su vida a esta tarea. Su proyecto llamado “Kimi Ma´ara o te Tupuna Maori Rapa Nui” se remonta a 1990, cuando luego de casarse con un francés y mudarse a Francia, visita las piezas ancestrales de Pascua en el Museo del Hombre de París. The possibility of taking a Moai to Paris in 2010, has divided members of the community between those who approve the so called “Voyage of Light” as a way of promoting Easter Island world widely, and the ones who refuse authorizing the exit of another archeological work piece. This debate inspired a revision of the archeological heritage of Rapa Nui, spread around museums and private collections of the world. Ida Hucke Atan, better known as “Piru”, has dedicated part of her life to this mission. Her project, named “Kimi Ma´ara o te Tupuna Maori Rapa Nui”began in 1990, when she married a French citizen and moved to France, being able to visit the ancestral work pieces at the Man´s Museum in Paris. Then she decided to get in contact with all the museums

explained that in general, all the pieces found in collections of museums throughout the world, left the island by the middle of the 19th century, once the catholic missionaries had already established to live here, and the Tahitian Ari´i Paea Salmon was running the “Compañía Explotadora” of Easter Island (foreign company that raised sheep cattle). He was responsible of selling all the pieces that the Smithsonian Institute owns nowadays, for example. On the other hand, missionaries promoted people to abandon their pagan beliefs and the idols that represented it, embodied in uncountable wooden and stone carved figures.

Rapanui anthropologist Sonia Haoa, argues that the exit of pieces in the past must be understood by looking at it in the correct context. Many of the Moai weren´t even stolen. Rapanui people themselves, helped foreigners to take them away. She believes that beyond the desire of returning objects to Rapa Nui, people must be realist in considering there is no appropriate place to store them here on the island. Nevertheless, according to her there are much more important pieces than the wooden carvings or the stone Moai, such as the hair braids kept among the Vatican collections in Rome.

El Director del Museo Antropológico de Rapa Nui, Francisco Torres, señala que en general, las piezas que están en las colecciones de los museos del mundo, salieron de la isla a partir de mediados del siglo XIX, cuando ya se habían instalado los misioneros católicos, y el tahitiano Ari´i Paea Salmón administraba la Compañía Explotadora de Isla de Pascua.  Él habría sido quien comercializó todas las piezas que posee el Instituto Smithsonian, por ejemplo y por su parte los curas incentivaban a las personas a abandonar sus costumbres paganas y la idolatría representada en las innumerables figuras talladas en madera y piedra.

La antropóloga rapanui Sonia Haoa argumenta que se debe poner en contexto la salida de las piezas más antiguas, ya que muchos de estos moai, no fueron robados sino que habrían sido los mismos rapanui quienes ayudaron a que se los llevaran. Reconoce que a pesar del deseo de repatriar objetos, deben ser realistas pues no existe un lugar apropiado dónde  recibir estas piezas.  Sin embargo, para ella existen reliquias mucho más importantes que los tallados en madera y los mismos moai de piedra, como son los pelos trenzados que se encuentran en las

Soy la número 12 de los 13 hermanos Pont Hill. Quedamos 6 vivos nada más.  Tuve 4 hijos hombres con Gregorio Tepano Pérez, que en paz descanse.  Si me piden que explique por qué antes era más linda la vida en la Isla, yo diría que es porque eran más unidas las familias. En el sector donde vivimos, cuando un vecino mataba un animal, le convidaba al resto con generosidad.  Mi abuelo era francés, pero no lo conocí porque tenía dos años cuando él murió. Sé que llegó en un barco donde trabajaba como cocinero, porque quería aventurarse, yo creo. Conoció a mi abuela Heremeta Make y se casó con ella. Yo no tuve una mala vida, nosotros nunca fuimos golpeados por nuestros padres.  Nunca escuché  un garabato en mi casa.  Tampoco vi que mi papá le pegara alguna vez a mi mamá, a pesar que antiguamente había muchos esposos que maltrataban a sus mujeres.

I am the 12th out of the 13 Pont Hill brothers and sisters. There are only 6 of us left now. I had 4 sons with Gregorio Tepano Perez, who is not alive anymore. If you ask me to explain in what ways was life more beautiful before on the island, I would say it is because families used to be closer to one another. In our neighborhood, whenever someone scarified an animal, he would generously share the meat with other neighbors. My grandfather was French, but I did not meet him since I was only two years old when he died. I know that he arrived on a ship where he worked as a cook, because he was looking for adventure, I believe. He met my grandmother Heremeta Make and married her. I did not live a bad life; we were never hit by our parents. I never heard a bad word at home. Neither did I see my father ever hitting my mother, although back in those times there were many husbands who used to hit their wives.

Recuerdo que el almacén donde se iba a comprar les vendía a las familias por orden alfabético. Como mi papá era Pont, nos tocaba de los últimos, junto a los Tuki y los Tepano. Cuando le tocaba a mi mamá ir a comprar ya no había casi nada.  Una vez yo lloré porque no quedaron zapatos para mí. Los niños nos divertíamos en el sector donde está el mercado artesanal ahora, que era puro pasto, y a los adultos les gustaba sentarse en las pircas a mirar cómo jugábamos. Había otros niños que tenían que trabajar mucho y eran muy golpeados, lo sé porque me lo contaron personas que lo vivieron. Mi mamá siempre quiso que fuéramos al colegio, pero no nos dejaba bajar a la playa, así que  inventábamos maneras para que nos diera permiso. Allá había niños y jóvenes de hasta 14 años, nos bañábamos todos juntos y sin ropa, sin maldad, ni malos pensamientos. 

I remember that the groceries store where people could buy things, sold to the families in alphabetical order. As my father´s last name was Pont, we had to wait till the end of the list, together with the Tuki and the Tepano families. When it was finally my mom´s turn, there was not much left to buy. Once I cried because they had run out of shoes. Children had fun nearby the area where nowadays the Handcrafts Market is located, on a grass field, while some adults enjoyed sitting on the stone walls to watch us play. There were other children who had to work a lot and got beaten; I know this because people who lived it told me about it. My mother wanted us to always attend school, but she did not allow us to go down to the beach, so we had to make up ways all the time to get her permission. Children and teenagers met there, and swam all together undressed, with no bad thoughts or hidden intentions.

Un día la mamá de los Hucke, llamada María Atán, vio que mi hijo estaba mal y comenzó a hacerle masajes todos los

días. Llevaba hierba Siete Ve-nas. Traía el jugo listo exprimi-do de su casa y se lo daba de beber. ¡No me vas a creer que sólo con eso mi hijo se sanó!

One day, the Huke family´s mother, named María Atan,

who had seen my ill son, began massaging him every day. She took him an herb named “seven veins” and gave him its juice to drink.

You won´t believe it but my son recovered only after this!

In those times there were very many “pure” (shells nowadays used for handcrafts) which we smashed to eat their meat. I would rather say there was scarcity more than poverty back then. We didn´t have noodles, rice or bread, but there were bananas, milk, “uhi” (purple kind of potato), yam, fish, meat, chicken and eggs. Since there were no flies, we were able to dry out meat. Now it would be impossible. When I grew older, I traveled to the continent with a Chilean marine´s family, as their children´s nanny. I wonder how come my mother gave them permission to take me. Some people have bad memories of the times when the Navy ran the island. They needed to get a permission to be able to go to the countryside, passing through a gate in the “Mataveri” area that was kept locked. Marines had control of Hangaroa town.

My husband and I married freely; we met at the continent. But my elder sister was forced to get married. She was in love with someone else, but they made her choose between two buttons, a black and a white one. She chose the incorrect one, so she married the person she didn´t love. The marriage failed. In the past, in wedding parties there was a long white piece of cloth, where people put money bills. Nowadays you don´t see this anymore. When my son Luis was 3 years old he got sick. I took him to the old hospital, located in front of the Municipality, but they could not tell me what was wrong with him. He couldn´t even swallow water, so he was hospitalized to be operated, but I refused to it. One day, the Huke family´s mother, named María Atan, who had seen my ill son, began massaging him every day. She took him an herb named “seven veins” and gave him its juice to drink. You won´t believe it but my son recovered only after this!

En ese entonces había muchísimos “pure” (conchitas usadas hoy para artesanía) con los que hacíamos “tingi-tingi” (machacarlos) para comer su carne.  Yo diría que más que pobreza era escasez lo que vivíamos en esa época. Para comer no había fideos, ni arroz, ni pan, pero había leche, plátanos, “uhi” (tubérculo de color morado), taro, pescado, carne, pollo y huevos.  Como no había moscas en ese tiempo, se podía  hacer charqui. Ahora hay demasiadas. Cuando era más grande, me fui al continente con un matrimonio continental de un marino de la Armada, para cuidar a los niños.  No sé cómo mi mamá me dejó ir con ellos.  Hay gente que tiene muy malos recuerdos del tiempo de la Armada y los marinos.  Había que pedirles una autorización para ir al campo atravesando un portón en Mataveri que tenían con candado.  Tenían el control del pueblo de Hanga Roa.  

Mi marido y yo nos casamos libremente, nos conocimos en el continente.  Pero a mi hermana mayor la obligaron a casarse.  Ella estaba enamorada de alguien pero la hicieron elegir entre dos botones, uno blanco y uno negro.  Ella sacó el botón de la persona a la que no quería. Se casaron pero el matrimonio fracasó. Antes, en las fiestas de matrimonio había una tela blanca larga, donde la gente ponía billetes. Ahora ya no se ve. Cuando mi hijo Luis tenía 3 meses se me enfermó.  Lo llevé al hospital antiguo que estaba frente a la Municipalidad, pero no supieron decirme qué  tenía.   No podía ni tragar agua el pobrecito, así que lo hospitalizaron para operarlo, pero yo no quise. Un día la mamá de los Hucke, llamada María Atán, vio que mi hijo estaba mal y comenzó a hacerle masajes todos los días. Llevaba hierba Siete Venas. Traía el jugo listo exprimido de su casa y se lo daba de beber. ¡No me vas a creer que sólo con eso mi hijo se sanó!

“A ll of our knowledge is kept on two planes.

Although we speak different languages, all that we speak comes from the upper jaw and lower jaw. Te Vai Pounamu – the pristine current in which flow the waters of the greatest wisdom – springs from the upper jaw. Very few men find the entrance to this sacred kingdom, since it can only be reached through a difficult path of ancestral chants and prayers. Here every word is sacred since it comes from the profound teachings of our ancestors.

personas con dotes espirituales excepcionales se les confiaba los bienes del Saber. En el mundo de los Tohunga no había lugar para el error.

También hablamos desde la mandíbula inferior. Un hablar de todo sin restricción. Una corriente burbujeante, libre de todos los mandamientos sagrados del silencio. Tejemos historias que entretienen a jóvenes y ancianos alrededor de las fogatas nocturnas, donde nos sumergimos en mundos demasiado reales para sostenerlos, demasiado luminosos para mirarlos y demasiado bellos para mantenerlos por mucho tiempo. Cada historia es un Pu Rakau – una semilla. No todas germinan. Entre todos aquellos que se entretienen con estas historias, solo algunos pocos serán capaces de reconocer la historia detrás de las historias.
