In this report that surveyed 128 libraries from different environments, we see that the adoption of the RDA rules in cataloging remains quite marginal in Spain : only 4% of the libraries surveyed are currently using RDA while 14% expect to implement RDA in the near future )but 83% haven’t taken any decision regarding the implementation of RDA(.

Although we have to mention that 32% of the university libraries surveyed are expecting to use RDA.

In the late spring of 2012, the American University of Sharjah )AUS( Library’s Technical Services department began assessing RDA’s expected impact on the library’s catalog and internal workflow. Of great interest to the department was:

1- the ease of modifying our integrated library system to accept new RDA records

2- the existence of RDA records in our system

3- whether existing AACR2 records would need to be re-cataloged to match RDA conventions

4- the usefulness of making Content, Media and Carrier fields viewable to our user community

5- RDA's impact on the library’s original cataloging of Arabic-language materials

1- Updating our ILS

The AUS Library employs Millennium, the integrated library system )ILS( by Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

Innovative offers its subscribers a free, three-week service commitment to review a library’s system configuration for RDA specificationsinternally validating the MARC rules for all new RDA fields

The loss of our local modifications proved to be too much of a risk, and it was decided we would undertake the responsibility of updating our ILS for RDA ourselves.

Roughly 90 percent of the library’s records for English materials are vendor-supplied, with the remaining 10 percent reasonably split between copy-cataloging and original cataloging. Because of this reliance upon vendor records, the Technical Services department reached out to its primary suppliers, Coutts and Yankee Book Peddler )YBP(, in Fall of 2012 to request more information about their plans for distributing RDA cataloging

Linked Data & RDA

On July 16, 2012, Zepheira co-founder and President Eric Miller appeared at a BIBFRAME Update Forum, held at the Library of Congress. When asked about the future framework and how it would connect with RDA, he replied: "Does Linked Data need RDA? No. I mean there are a lot of different communities that are using Linked Data right now that have never heard of RDA. […] We're creating a pretty high barrier for that outside community to start connecting into."
