Dear Readers:

As you already know, I am an avid reader. As such, I recently read

a book entitled The Power of Habit. It is an interesting read (I would

recommend it with two thumbs up) as to understanding why we do

what we do in life and, of course, in business. It explores how our brain

functions and how a good habit might potentially benefit our life and

our business. It is said that we might not remember the experiences

that create our habits, but once they are lodged within our brains they

do still influence how we act; often without our realization. Habit is a

powerful and strong force because it is ingrained in our memory after it

is formed.

One of the most fascinating examples the author gives is the

story of "Febreze" fabric refresher. It was well on its way to becoming one of the biggest flops in the

company's history then suddenly turned around to earn a billion dollars a year! How was this achieved?

It was achieved simply by detecting a nearly imperceptible pattern. Instead of being merely another air

freshener added to an already crowded field, Febreze was postioned as a fabric refresher and a reward

of having something smell refreshed even after cleaning. The desire to make everything smell as nice as

it looked is what made Febreze become a hit.

Just as the makers of Frebreze uderstood the mentality of their customers' desires, so too must we

strive to understand ours. The strategy behind this phenomenon is such: 1) identify the desire; 2) convert

the desire into a craving; and 3) then turn the craving into a habit. For companies, understanding the

science of customers’ desires (convert into craving, then into habit) will hold the key for revolutionary

success. I wonder what would be the motivational desire for consumers to make a habit of choosing to

purchase cost-effective, environmentally-friendly, green, recycled products. Figure out the key to creating

the “craving”, and you figure out the key to success.

In this issue, we want to share some companies’ new business models which we hope will help you

understand how they address their customers' needs by designing their sales and marketing strategies

to create desire which in turn may lead to habit. Be sure to read the following articles: “Channeling

New Markets” by Ronelle Ingram on p. 14; “Have You Failed or Succeeded?” on p. 21; “The 3Ps of

Thriving When the Euroquake Hits Asia” by Curt Keller on p. 28; and “Remanufacturing the Brother

HL-2280 DR-420 OPC Cartridge” by Mike Josiah on p. 52.

Here’s to happy habits!

I pose this question: have you failed or succeeded? As always, though especially pertinent over the past several tumultuous years, all of us should ask this question of our respective businesses. Some of you may have succeeded (and a hearty congratulations to you), but the odds are that many of you have failed at growing your business in this down economy. The big question then, is why? Our industry has evolved for the following two main reasons: 1) the environmental impact on printing and 2) the increasing costs of printing. The environmental reasons might not have been the major reason in the beginning but they have grown increasingly significant and continue to have a major impact with environmentally-conscious companies and consumers. As for the cost of printing continue to increase year after year due to oil prices, cost of shipping, cost of raw material goods, etc. HP, Lexmark, and other major OEM companies continue to pass these increased costs in components on to the consumers, yet the 3rd party industry is hesitant to pass any costs on to the dealers or consumers. Even with these continued cost increases and price increases to the consumers, the OEM companies continue to maintain a 60-70% market share. How are the OEMs maintaining this?

The recent economic problems of the past 3 years surely present the 3rd party industry with an opportunity to take at least some of that market share away. Yet we unfortunately continue to hear about companies in our industry going out of business. Let’s go back to a primary reason this industry evolved from: the overall costs of printing. Surely, as businesses strive to save money, they consider using a 3rd party cartridge; especially when considering that 3-5% of businesses revenue goes towards printing cost. When I talk to businesses that have continued to grow over the past several challenging years, there is one common response as to why they have not only maintained the business but have grown during these tough economic times. The overwhelming reason is this: they have gone after the OEM business inside their existing base and with new opportunities. Seems simple, right? Not exactly. Converting a customer from OEM to a 3rd party cartridge can be anything but simple. You hear over and over again the same typical responses from the prospective customer: I’ve tried that before and it doesn’t work. My IT department won’t let me buy anything but OEM. So why have some companies thrived and grown their business during this current recession? Are they simply

luckier than others? Do they work harder or smarter? I think the main reason is that they have found an opportunity and taken full advantage of it. When you talk to most dealers, they continue to go after the consumers and businesses that are already purchasing 3rd party cartridges. This usually translates to one thing—less profit. In order to get that prospective customer away from their current provider, the 3rd party dealer either has to offer a better price or find an opportunity to provide a solution to issues the prospect has with their current provider. The latter case sometimes ends up with the consumer going back to the OEM out of fear of trying something new. So how do you differentiate yourself from everyone else? Lower your price or go after the 60-70% of the market that continues to purchase OEM products at significantly higher costs? Most likely, the economy eventually will get better and most businesses will go back to the age of not worrying (so much) about every minute aspect of the costs associated with running a business. They will probably just go with status quo and continue to pay the high prices of the OEM products. Why not take this opportunity now and go after this piece of business? For the remainder of 2012, are you going to succeed or fail?

Have You Failed or Succeeded?By Jason Troupe, Sales Manager, InkCycle.

The Hard Copy Peripherals (HCP) market in India registered a recovery in Q1 2012 and stood at 834,134 units, recording a sequential growth (Quarterly) of 12.6% and a year on year growth of 7.4%. “Consumer sentiments improved in Q1 even as Government and SME remain key contributors to this growth,” said Dr. Adwaita Menon, Associate Director at IDC. HP continued to dominate the HCP market with a market share of 48.8%. The vendor was noted to recover from the share drop, noted in Q4 and gained 3.0 percentage points in Q1 2012.

Figure 1

“Successful marketing campaign by HP to strengthen their printer business has paid off well in Q1; similarly efforts by Canon to create a robust channel ecosystem and to continue their focus on fast selling models helped them in their sizeable growth, as noted in Q1 2012”, commented Mohit Raizada, Market Analyst at IDC. Inkjet HCP market grew by 19.9% compared to Q4 2011 and marginally by 1.5% compared to the same period in 2011. Mohit further adds, "Due to price inflation and impending macro economic pressures, consumer sentiments remained subdued towards the second half of 2011, which rebounded to some extent in Q1 2012”. HP leads the Inkjet HCP market in Q1 2012 with a whopping 64.3% share followed by Epson and Canon, respectively. The laser HCP (Printer-based) market witnessed a growth of 11.6% compared to previous quarter Q4 2011 and a growth of 18.9% compared to the same period in 2011. Here too, HP regained its dominance f o l l o w e d b y C a n o n a n d S a m s u n g , respectively. Moving to the last segment, Laser HCP (Copier-based) marked record shipments of 33,406 units in Q1 2012. This market witnessed a sequential growth of 60.5% and a year-on-year growth of 15.4%. Ricoh gained maximum share of 8.1 percentage

points and stood as the market leader with 27.6% market share. This was followed by Canon with 21.6% share. “Q1 continues to remain strong for Laser HCP spending in the Government and Education sector owing to the year-end closure for federal bodies and respective allocation for spending IT products. This supports the Laser market as the spending from these segments increases in Q1 every year,” says Nitin Kumar Singh, Sr. Market Analyst at IDC.

IDC Forecast Mohit commented, “New models in both Inkjet and Laser categories are expected to be launched in the upcoming quarters. Vendors have been expanding their retail presence in the recent past across the entry level Laser printers, anticipating a migration across consumers from inkjet to laser in the near future. Further, the education segment is expected to remain buoyant owing to seasonality and back-to-school campaigns, which are being driven by vendors in both the PC and HCP market”. However, IDC expects the volatile currency to adversely impact the HCP market even as a price hike across brands remains imminent.

North and South leading the printer market share in IndiaKanwar Rahul, Research Manager at IDC stated, “The North & South regions together contributed 30% each of the total shipment in India during the first quarter of 2012, thereby managing to lead the sell through share. The western region followed with 22% market share, there were no major deals in the government sector and sporadic buying in the commercial sector which is under tremendous pressure due to the liquidity crisis and falling profitability. The Eastern region share was 18% but showed a promising growth of 13% compared to Q4 2011”.

Top 5 States contributed 47% to the total India Printer Market

Figure 1

Top 5 Cities contributed almost 33% to the total India Printer Market

Figure 2

“In the North, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh continued to be the top states with a combined share of 62% of total shipments in the region. In the West, Maharashtra being the financial capital, remained the leader with 72% share in entire region”, said Mohit Raizada, Market Analyst at IDC. The East region is predominately an Inkjet printer market. West Bengal and Bihar put together contributed 58% of the East market. The Northeast region is growing and the market share for Q1 stood at 25%. Unlike the other three regions, the South is a well-spread market. “In Q4 2011, the top 4 states in southern India had almost the same share but in Q1 2012, Tamil Nadu overtook Kerala with 29%” added Mohit Raizada. According to IDC Channel Analyst, Joydeep Dey, “laser printing technology has a strong hold in the North, South and West, whereas the Eastern region is primarily driven by the Inkjet technology with 53% of total market share in the region”. Joydeep Dey added, “HP continued to lead in the Inkjet market across all the regions followed by Canon and Epson. Where as in the Laser segment too, HP is the leader followed aggressively by Canon. Samsung continues its focus on Laser MFPs and is expected to give a stiff competition to this segment.” Adding to the reg iona l channe l promotions, few effective schemes by vendors such as cash back incentives, cash discounts, free gifts, etc. were launched which enabled the overall market to grow.

Almost every BTA member company has established a website to create an Internet presence. Websites are used to describe your company, products, personnel and community involvement; to report meter readings; and to order supplies and service. Establishing your website was a major decision and , in many cases, a learning process. But since you checked your website off of your to-do list, have you updated and refreshed it? For many potential customers, a visit to your website is the first contact they will have with your business. It is important to make a good first impression and to protect yourself as well. As you update your website, you may be exploring the possibility of making your site more interactive. From a business perspective, creating a user experience on your website that is easy to use and navigate enhances the end-user’s experience. Form a legal perspective, however, how do you balance the advantage of interactivity with the added burdens of creating, maintaining and updating essential privacy, data security and other policies? Federal law (and several state laws) mandates that companies inform their users about any personally identifiable information (PII) they collect, how the company uses it, with which the company may share it and how users may opt-out of having their PII collected and shared. PII includes information such as names, social security

numbers, biometric records ,etc., that alone, or when combined with other information such as date and place of birth ,mother’s maiden name ,etc., can be used to trace an individual’s identity. In most situations, other that name, this is not necessary for your purposes and should not be requested. Every company with a presence on the Internet should have a privacy policy that is compliant with federal and state laws. Clearly establish what information is being collected and examine how it is used. Many company websites are including interactive features such as blogs, chat rooms and even video sharing that allow the posting of user-generated content(UGC).If your website includes these or similar features, it is an interactive website. The features of an interactive website can be extremely valuable for solving everyday problems and generating goodwill. There are two important legal protections for operators of interactiveComputer services. The Communications Decency Act (CDA) provides immunity from liability for Internet Service Providers (ISPS).This shields an ISP from liability arising out of civil causes of action such as defamation, invasion of privacy, trade libel, etc. As a very general rule, as long as the provider is not a publisher of the content (they merely provide a place to post the content; they do not contribute to or edit it), they will not be held liable for the original

posting of the offending UGC. T h e D i g i t a l Millennium Copyright A c t ( D M CA ) a l s o conta ins impor tant protections. Under the DMCA, “an operator of interactive computer ser vices” is immune f r o m l i a b i l i t y f o r intellectual property

(primarily copyright) infringement by a third party using the service provided that the provider follows certain registration, compliance and procedural guidelines. One of the most valuable policies for a website owner is a terms-of-use policy. Your terms of use tell your users what they can reasonably expect when using your site. For example, you may prohibit certain activities, such as hate speech, personal attacks, posting materials to which the user does not have the requisite legal rights, etc. By setting the ground rules of what you will allow on your site, you can monitor UGC for violations of the policy and remove or refuse to post such material. Remember, if an ISP edits or modifies content, it is treated as a publisher of content and can lose protection. However, if an ISP removes content in its entirety for violating a documented policy, the ISP is not considered a publisher and is protested under the CDA. A well-crafted terms-of-use policy, if correctly written and agreed to, also forms a “contract” between the end user and the website operator. As a practical matter, the Internet is no longer an optional business tool. It is a primary source of communication, information and advertising. Developing sound social media and technology policies as early as possible can reduce your liability and exposure, and allow your dealership room to grow in this new, online world.

Silverbrook Research Reaches Agreement With Memjet

InkPeace, LLC, a leading laser printer toner consulting and distribution company, announced today that the company has added the 92-school Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) and the 22-department City of Long Beach to its client base indicating that major governmental bodies are joining commercial business in embracing environmentally responsible products, while at the same time, slashing costs. InkPeace was awarded a three-year contract with the state of California's 3rd largest school district in December of 2011 and serves the LBUSD directly. The company will be working with the City of Long Beach through a contract recently awarded to Complete Office of California, a Poway based office products company. Complete Office chose InkPeace to supply its line of environmentally responsible toner cartridges for printers, copiers, and fax machines to the 22 departments within the city.

“These contracts will save our budget-starved city government and area schools over $2M in the short-term”, according to Mark Hawkins, founder of InkPeace. “The savings is a no-brainer, but we had to prove quality and service before being embraced by large institutions”, Hawkins said. With both city government and the regions largest school district adopting refurbished toner policies, an estimated 100,000 users will be printing with the eco-friendly product. InkPeace i s b e s t known f o r i t s environmental policies when it comes to ink and toner for printers. All toner cartridges are remanufactured and recycled locally giving Hawkins control of the quality. In addition, InkPeace stays away from imported counterfeits that pose as refurbished product. “Anyone can go online and find low cost, imported cartridges”, says Hawkins. “ We prefer to keep the quality high, the pricing low, and keeping the jobs here at home.” Hawkins cites the improvement in re-engineering and development of the

OEM (name brand) toner cartridge as a major reason that even the most pragmatic decision makers are changing their attitudes on aftermarket cartridges. Today, the replacement printing cartridge industry has matured with improved manufacturing and testing standards and processes. InkPeace is in the midst of expanding the company's services into other city go ve r nment s , s c hoo l d i s t r i c t s , and commercial businesses outside the greater Long Beach area. Malaysia Printer and MFP Market Rebounds in 1Q12 after Lackluster 2011

The printer and multifunction peripherals (MFP) market exper ienced healthy growth in 1Q 2012 and showed signs of improvement after months of consecutive declines. The market expanded 21.2% sequentially to reach over 320,000 unit shipments in 1Q 2012, compared to just over 260,000 unit shipments in 4Q 2011. Inkjet printers and MFPs, popular choices amongst home users, continued to dominate the total hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market holding 61.7% market share as compared to laser printers and MFPs with just over 35.0%, followed by SDM at 3.3%. (Refer to Figure 1) Overall, the inkjet printers and MFPs market grew 13.0% sequentially, recording over 197,000 unit shipments in 1Q 2012. Inkjet MFPs experienced a quarter-on-quarter growth of 17.7%, accounting for 79.4% of the total inkjet market, while inkjet printers continued to shrink sequentially, this time by 2.0%, holding just 20.6% of the total inkjet HCP market. On the other hand, laser printers and MFPs experienced a significant growth of 39.7% sequentially in Q1 2012. Large scale commercia l tenders and total solutions offered by vendors were the main contributors to this growth. The laser

MFP market experienced a strong growth of 92.0% representing over 62,000 unit shipments in 1Q 2012 as compared to just 4.0% growth recorded for laser printers. Donovan Low, Associate Market Analyst for IDC’s Peripherals research in Malaysia, says, “In recent years, the overall demand of multi-function printing machines has been on the rise due to aggressive pricing and marketing efforts put in place by most vendors. On top of this, commercial tenders are also driving the market up with more strategic pricing and overall solutions offered.” As the market is expected to face several months of uncertainty because of the overall political situation in the country, spending from end-users as well as public and private sectors is likely to fluctuate. In addition, the contraction of the global economy will decrease the overall spending of users causing further uncertainty in the months ahead. Considering all these factors, IDC expects slow but steady growth ahead for the printer and MFP market and it is projected to grow at 5.5% in 2012.

Office Works had been advertizing Greentec as ''made from original recycled cartridges''. Keytec’s Managing Director Gerry Stacey explained that it is their intention to use “100 per cent remanufactured car tr idges from or iginal equipment manufacturers.” However, a shortage of original cartridges globally had made them source out “remanufactured compatibles” from China. He further explained that “remanufactured cartridges are empty original equipment manufacturer (OEM) cartridges that have been recycled and refilled with ink''. Stacey has apologized to Office Works and their customers and promised to update the information on their packaging to avoid confusion.

The 3Ps of Thriving When the Euroquake Hits AsiaBy Curt Keller

Curt Keller is CEO and founder of one of the world ’s leading, Web-based email marketing services, Benchmark Email. While Benchmark’s client base ranges from work-at-home travel agents to large, multinational companies, Mr. Keller remains f iercely dedicated to addressing the email and online marketing challenges facing small and mid-sized businesses. A pioneer in the realm of permission-based marketing, Mr. Keller started Benchmark Email in early 2004 and quickly grew the Southern California-based company from a three-person operation to a major International player with services for people in India, China, South America, Germany and Japan. Benchmark currently remains a member of two of the industry’s most exclusive consortium, the Email Sender & Provider Coalition and Returnpath.net. A vocal advocate for good, industry-wide email marketing practices and standards, Mr. Keller is a regular blogger for Allbusiness.com and Imediaconnection.com.

To a digital printing technology and consumables marketer involved in the Asian market, Europe is nothing more than a faint spot on the horizon; a continent which has long since given up its colonial and empirical claims to “rule the world” and has now been by far overshadowed by the swiftly-growing, massive economies of the Asia-Pacific region. However, this relative “backwater” with a population barely a third of China alone may be in the process of letting loose a seismic shift which will affect all Asian economies—both the more developed nations as well as the emerging markets. With the European Union’s currency, the Euro, seemingly in its death throes, the years of financial mismanagement in far-away capitals such as Athens, Rome, Dublin and Madrid may soon have momentous echoes in Beijing, Tokyo, Jakarta and Manila. That being said, however, there are ways to help your digital printing technology and consumables online marketing efforts continue to thrive. But it will take the 3Ps: Prescience, Preparation, and Pursuance.

Abandonment of fiscal sovereigntyThe interconnected global economy is a spider’s web linking the financial destiny of all nations. Just like a gossamer web, if you jiggle it over here it jiggles over there as well. When trade barriers fell, each nation on earth essentially gave up its fiscal sovereignty in favor of a de facto worldwide common market where the economic health (or lack thereof ) of nations on the other side of oceans can cause any given nation to boom or bust.

A spasmodic & uncertain marketIndia’s government has recently reported that the first quarter 2012 growth was at the slowest pace in nearly a decade. The signs

that the Asian economies are running into molasses are everywhere in the region: South Korea’s exports contracted severely during the spring; Australia’s manufacturing sector has been slowing; Taiwanese electronic device manufacturers are reporting cuts in orders from major brand names; and IPOs around the area are being delayed or cancelled outright, with Formula One Group and Graff Diamonds being the latest casualties of a spasmodic and uncertain market.

The Rupee is in freefallLong the powerhouse of the continent, China’s economic growth outlook for this year has been cut by 20% due to the collapse in exports to Europe. China’s slowdown has a knock-on effect on every economy from Vietnam to Singapore and could minimize or erase outright growth expectations throughout the region. With investors fleeing the cracking Euro, a rush to more secure currencies such as the Yen has significantly pushed up its value, making Japanese exports far less competitive around the world. Other Asian nations with less attractive currencies such as Indonesia and India have been in freefall, with the rupee going from 44 to the dollar last July to over 56 to the dollar just ten months later. The Asian house may not be on fire quite yet but there are undeniable signs of smoke, so now is the time to implement those notorious 3Ps:1) PrescienceT h e d i s t o r t i o n s i n t h e g l o b a l f i n a n c i a l system have reached a l eve l where there a re

effectively no applicable forces that can significantly modify any particular vector, even if it ’s straight down. Therefore, it is wise to acknowledge reality in your online marketing efforts. If your digital printing technology and consumables products reflect particularly good value, you have now found the critical marketing point you need to focus on. If your company has a long and well-establ ished reputation for providing consistently competitive products with stable and responsive customer service it is time to let your prospective customers know. On the edge of a financial chasm is not the time for burying your online marketing strategy under piles of steamy hype as the tolerance of your customer base to over the top hard sell is at a very low ebb and you will likely see even more resistance in the near future. The mindset of “let’s buy whatever digital printing technology and consumables we want and who cares what it costs”, which marked the giddy years of China’s “tide rising all boats”, is over and may never return. Your customers now want to see real value for their Yuan, Yen, Rupiah, or Peso and this trend is sure to amplify as the Euro Earthquake continues to shake the region.

2) PreparationEven the most modest and careful ly controlled businesses have extravagances and waste that can be eliminated. Once you have absorbed the necessary insight in the Prescience stage, you can now move to rally support among your executives and personnel to hunt down unnecessary online marketing expenditures and areas where you are wasting time and resources. The e l ephan t i n the room w i l l undoubtedly be social media with its stubbornly immeasurable Return On Investment (ROI). While some of the best minds in statistics, economics, and most every other science involved in corporate finance have tackled the difficult task of coming up with a reasonable formula to calculate marketing ROI on the various social networks, so far all have failed. Even the most august experts in the field swear that social media presence is obligatory for all online marketers but the direct relationship between cost in and sales out remains as elusive as the Scarlet Pimpernel. To prepare for possible lean times, you may want to consider relying more strongly on online marketing channels where the ROI is not only readily measurable and verifiable, but also has a history of returning investment more than forty-fold: that channel is email marketing. Here are some stats: email marketing accounts for $67.8 billion in sales; according to a Focus survey it is the best marketing performer; ForeSee lists it as the biggest online influence on retail website visits;

and Pitney-Bowes found that 68% of all small businesses list email as their preferred marketing channel. BtoB Magazine found that 63% of email marketers planned to increase their spending on email marketing this year which is really saying something in a shrinking economy! Email marketing offers you a direct channel to your prospects and allows you to conduct a one on one conversation with them that can fully engage them and build loyalty to your digital printing technology and consumables brand.3) PursuanceWarren Buffet ’s famous quote “you only learn who has been swimming naked when the tide goes out” certainly applies to these upcoming times when online marketers who have been relying on boom time liquidities to cover their marketing inefficiencies and the shortfalls of their product line will be exposed to their customers and their competitors. Online marketers who apply their intellect with courage and perspicacity will find new opportunities in the upcoming choppy financial waters. The good news is that no matter how seriously hit the Asian economies will be there is virtually no scenario that sees the collapse of the digital printing technology and consumables market. People in Asia will still need to print and toner and ink on paper will continue to be an integral part of doing business everywhere. From your angle you can look at shaky economic times as a competitive advantage: costs will drop, the price of advertising and

related services will go down; commercial rents and property prices will plummet; equipment and machinery will be available very cheaply at auction from bankrupt companies; and talented personnel will be looking for a job at your company! While some of your competitors might just throw up their hands and fold, you can continue to persevere and take over their market share. Indeed, a financial crisis could be the best thing that’s ever happened to your digital printing technology and consumables business... if you play your cards right! Some of the most successful brand names today were launched in the Great Depression of the ‘30s. So bad times can be great times if you’re a smart marketer!

From working as a research & development

chemist designing and testing new products, to solving specific technical problems for clients, managing quality control and covering production at the plant, no two days are ever the same.” Continues Vicky, “Diamond is a highly successful business and I see many opportunities to grow the company and contribute to that success. One of my future tasks wil be to expand and improve our UV dispersions range. This is a complex but growing area of the global ink industry and I know Diamond will continue to increase their presence in this particular sector.” Concludes Pete Callahan, director at Diamond Dispersions, “With her expert knowledge and experience, Vicky is already proving a very valuable member of our team. Like us, she is passionate about inks and understands the exacting demands and requirements of our clients. I have no doubt that she will be a key player in our pursuit to create the perfect ink.”

UNINET RELEASES JUMBO TONER HOPPERS FOR USE IN HP LASERJET PRO 400/300, P4515 & MORE ENGINESLos Angeles, CA - UniNet introduces a wide range of Jumbo toner hoppers qualified for use in HP LaserJet Pro 400/300, P4515, P2035, P1505, and more engines. These hoppers are utilized to increase the page yields over the standard version cartridges. In addition these devices are created to convert a low yield “A” cartridge to a Jumbo cartridge (P2035 to P2055 for example), or to convert a high yield cartridge to an even higher yielding Jumbo cartridge (such as the P4515). UniNet observes that in the last five years, Managed Print Services (MPS) gained great significance in the market. One of the reasons is to maintain low costs, and by having a cartridge that yields an additional 10% to 30% more pages, it will definitely help reduce production, inventory and shipping expenses to MPS and/or Cost Per Page providers, while

giving the end user additional value. UniNet offers older model HP 4000, 4100, and 2100 hoppers, up to the latest releases from HP, including color models such as the CP1215, CP2025, and the very popular monochrome models P1005/P1102 and the P1505/1606 models.

Memjet Makes Major Move into MarketFresh from the resolution of the $600m lawsuit between its major investor and Kia Silverbrook's research arm, Memjet is now signing up partners for its superfast inkjet technology. So far Canon/Océ, Fuji Xerox and Xante have all signed on for the radical new print technology in wide format application, with Toshiba among those using it for desktop production printing and others signing up for label printing applications. Major brands including Lenovo and LG have also signed up. According to Canon, the Memjet technology will allow the printing of a wide format poster as tall as the Eiffel Tower in less than 30 minutes. The point of difference between various companies signing up to provide Memjet technology will lie in what they build around the print heads; particularly the media handling. The resolution of the lawsuit, announced the day before Drupa opened, means that, according to Memjet president Len Lauer. it owns all the patents and IP. The majority of the 200 scientists working in Sydney on Memjet will now be employed by Memjet Inc, but will remain located in Sydney, operating from the North Ryde facility. Kia Silverbrook himself will withdraw from day to day involvement in Memjet, acting as a consultant to the board, and will carry on running Silverbrook Research, Australia’s largest research organisation, and one of the world’s biggest holders of patents. New Lexmark ID App Spots Counterfeit

Ink CartridgesLexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) announces the Lexmark ID app, allowing customers to verify Lexmark-branded inkjet cartridges on the spot using only their smartphone or tablet. Why confirm a cartridge is a Lexmark original? Counterfeiters sometimes illegally reuse and refill Lexmark cartridges and package and sell them as original Lexmark goods. The origin and quality of these cartridges are unknown to the customer, and they can sometimes leak, run out after a few pages, not work at all or even damage a printer.

The app is free from Android, Apple or Blackberry.

They include:• An HP ePrint & Share mobile application for Android smartphones and tablets, allowing more users to access, view and print drawings on the go.• New features for HP ePrint & Share, including the ability to print PDF files directly from e-mail and optimization for Apple iPad.• HP-enabled cloud printing, now available directly from Autodesk AutoCAD WS, only available with HP Designjet web-connected printers. “Today’s AEC professionals demand easy-to-use mobile solutions that fit an on-the-go lifestyle and make viewing, archiving and printing large-format documents available at their fingertips,” said Santiago Morera, vice president and general manager, Large-format Printing Business, HP. “HP continues to address these needs by providing the first large-format printer portfolio that lets customers access and print their designs where the job takes them.”

New HP ePrint & Share features streamline design and build processHP ’s award-winning ePrint & Share is a free web service that allows AEC customers to access and print drawings from their conference room, home or job site using smartphones, tablets, laptops or the touchscreen of an HP Designjet ePrinter. HP ePrint & Share is designed for freelance architects, small- and medium-sized architecture and engineering firms and medium and large construction companies. “With partners around the world, we needed a solution that would alleviate communication issues associated with working across great distances,” said Brian Swanner, senior architect, Waggonner & Ball Architects. “The new features built into HP ePrint & Share helped us find ways to share designs with a variety of partners and, with the mobile application, we can print where the job takes us, speeding up the design-and-build process.” The HP ePr int & Share mobi le application, now available from Android and iOS devices, provides fast, easy access to files and print jobs, allowing users to:• Pr int to any HP Designjet web-connected printer, whether at the home office or a partner’s site, to save time, travel lighter and improve collaboration.• Print PDF files directly from e-mail by selecting the HP ePrint & Share application via the “Open in” button in iOS devices or “Share” button in Android devices.

“As a virtual firm, we rely on technology like HP ePrint & Share to help us find better ways to work together remotely, rather than having the overhead associated with a brick and mortar location,” said Jason Prichard, principal c o n s u l t a n t , T h e a t r e Consultants Collaborative. “The HP ePrint & Share mobile application for Android is easy to install, streamlined and simple to use for mobile printing.”

The HP ePr int & Share mobi le application enables remote printing to any HP Designjet web-connected printer, including the HP Designjet T2300 eMFP and the HP Designjet T1300 and T790 ePrinters. First introduced in December 2010, the HL-2280 laser printers are the next generation of Brother's newer higher quality engines. As with all previous Brother engines it has its quirks but is better than the previous engine. See below for an explanation of a very large quirk in this cartridge. The HL-2280 series of printers are based on a 21-27ppm, 2400 x 600 dpi machine that comes standard with a duplexer built in. With a list price of $149.00 including the duplexer, these machines are going to be very popular. The DR-420 has a list price of $104.99*. *As of September 2011 Currently there are quite a few machines based on the HL-2280 engine:

The OEM stated yield is ESTIMATED at 12,000 pages. This number is based on the number of actual drum revolutions, not the pages printed. There is a start rotation at the start of every job, and a stop rotation. So if one page is printer there is the start, 3 ½ for the page and the stop for a total of 5 ½. The larger the average print job, the longer the life the drum will have.

Just keep this in mind if your customer is complaining about a short drum cartridge life. This is all spelled out in detail in the user’s manual and also the service manual. IMPORTANT!!! Brother print systems have always been different, and this one is no exception. It’s even different from the traditional Brother systems. In the past, the drum cartridge had a “Charge Brush” that attracted the waste toner to it, and at the correct time repelled it to the drum so the developer roller could pick it back up. This cartridge has done away with the Charge brush! There is no mention of any theory in the service manual so we are looking into (the many) Brother patents to see how this works now. My personal educated guess is this: the developer roller has always put the toner out there for the drum to print with and they have always picked up the waste toner from the charge brush through the drum. I believe that Brother has just eliminated the middle man so to speak. The developer roller still presents the good toner in the same way, but it also is picking up the waste all pretty much at almost the same time. Time will tell, but if this is how it works, then the multi-use life of the drum cartridge has been greatly extended. This is a simpler but also timing wise much more complicated system. As I get more info on this, I’ll update these instructions. The cartridge theory below has been modified to fit the explanation above. I also left in the charge brush theory so you see what previous potential issues were. This is all important to know as failure to clean the toner cartridges properly causes backgrounding. I believe this will still be

the case, the culprit this time instead of the charge brush will be the developer roller. It is more important than ever to clean out the toner cartridge properly, and to also make sure the developer roller is clean. There are dedicated Brother developer roller cleaners on the market that are perfect for this. We do not recommend any kind of alcohol as it will remove some of the conductive layer and cause issues with density and now also backgrounding. The cleaning section of typical Brother drum cartridges consists of a "cleaning brush" and a recovery blade. This brush has two opposite charges placed on it during the print cycle. The first attracts any remaining toner off the drum. The second repels the toner off the brush back onto the drum where it then transfers back into the toner cartridge. This is all done in a timing sequence that does not interfere with the printing process. If the cleaning brush becomes contaminated with bad toner that will not charge, the brush will not be able to clean itself, and back grounding will occur. It seems to be the nature of contaminated toner that it will accept most of the charge to be cleaned off the drum, but it will not accept the charge that would allow the brush to clean itself off at all. A properly working cleaning brush will at any given time have only a small amount of toner on it. Once contaminated, toner will accumulate, which will only cause the problems to get worse. Since the developer roller actually con t ac t s the d r um, some tone r i s transferred back into the supply of the toner cartridge. Once you print with a bad toner cartridge, the drum unit will

become contaminated. Even when you change out the toner with a good properly recycled or new OEM cartridge, the drum unit will transfer some of the bad toner back into the good toner cartridge, which will again cause back grounding. Both cartridges will be contaminated again. The DR-420 cartridge, since it does not use a charge brush, has the reverse charge on the developer roller which allows it to pick up the waste toner from the drum. Again, it will be critical for the developer roller to be clean! The rest of the print theory is the same as previous engines. The remaining 80g or so of "toner" in the toner cartridge is just below the bare minimum that can maintain the proper charge level. When the change toner light comes on, the toner will not charge up to the proper level and will cause the back grounding. As the toner cartridge reaches the end of its useful life, the printer senses the low charge level in the toner supply and will try to keep the charge level up. This constant charging keeps an almost "empty" cartridge from back grounding. Once the printer cannot get the remaining toner up to the minimum charge, the change toner light comes on. The cartridge at this point will still be printing properly. If you were to take that same cartridge out of the machine for a few days, and then put it back in the printer with out doing anything to it, the cartridge will shade. This will happen because the charge level that the printer was trying so hard to keep up has dissipated out and the materials left can no longer accept a proper charge.

What does this all mean?1 ) Make su re tha t you r c a r t r i dge technicians thoroughly clean out the supply chamber of the toner cartridge.2) In the event that they forget, and you have a shading cartridge. The toner must be completely cleaned out again. (Do not use the toner over!!), and NEW fresh toner MUST be installed.3) The developer roller must be cleaned with a dedicated developer roller cleaner.

Tools RequiredSmall Common screw driverE-ring pliersVacuum approved for toner

1) Remove the E-ring from the Non Gear side of the drum axle shaft. See Figure 1

2) Remove the drum axle from the Non Gear side of the drum. If you try to pull it out from the gear side, the shaft will jam up on the drum ground contact and damage the contact. See Figure 2

3) Be careful not to lose the round drum bushing from the non gear side of the cover! See Figure 3

4) Carefully pry up and lift off the top cover/corona wire assembly from the cartridge. See Figure 4

5) Carefully remove the drum. Note that unlike all previous Brother drums there is a one-piece drive gear not 2 as in previous units. The hub side is also spring loaded, and is not easily removable. See Figures 5 & 6.

6) Carefully lift out the transfer roller from the gear side. Be very careful not to touch the roller with your skin. As with any transfer roller the oils naturally present in your skin will be absorbed by the roller and interfere with the transfer process, causing light print. See Figure 77) IMPORTANT: Note that there will be a small white bushing with an internal black plastic spacer left in the cartridge. This spacer keeps the transfer roller touching the electrical contacts on the left side of the cartridge. Be very careful not to lose this spacer! The cartridge will either

Reset Procedure If the machine is saying to change the drum unit, do the following. If the drum unit was cleaned because of contamination, the reset is not necessary. For the HL-XXXX units: After replacing the drum unit, keep the front cover open (make sure the power is on). Press and hold the "GO" button until all four LEDS are lit. Once the four LEDs are lit, release the GO button and close the front cover. Make sure the Drum LED is off. The counter is reset! For the HL-228X, MFC-XXXX and DCP-XXXX machines:Open the front Cover and press CLEAR. To confirm you are installing a new drum unit, press the UP arrow. When the Screen shows ACCEPTED, close the front cover The counter is reset!

TroubleshootingBack grounding: (Gray Streaks) This is usually caused by contaminated toner. See the explanation at the beginning of this article for more information. With the removal of the charge brush from this cartridge, backgrounding can now also be caused by a worn or dirty developer roller. This is also explained at the beginning of this article.Dark Black Vertical Streaks: This is normally caused by either a dirty primary corona wire, or the blue corona wire cleaner is not in its "home" position on the left side of the cartridge.Light Print: Can be caused by a dirty or worn Transfer Charge Roller. These rollers are located inside the cartridge. So far in our tests, they should last at least 2-3 cycles. See next section also.Light or 1/2 page prints: This is caused by a missing transfer roller spacer. The spacer is a small piece of black plastic that sits next to the right end of the transfer roller. This piece keeps the transfer roller

touching the electrical contact on the opposite side of the roller. If missing, the roller will move and can cause light or 1/2 page prints.Black or white horizontal Lines: Black lines normally appear when there is a build up of toner, White when there is a dead spot, or contamination of the roller. Solid Black Pages: Bad drum ground contact. Probably from the drum axle shaft to the contact gear inside the drum.Perfectly straight thin black lines down the page: Scratched drum.Black dots that repeat every 94.2mm: Chipped drum or something is stuck to the drum surface.

Focus on Users’ Needs-based Demand in the Supplies Market

2012 China Printer Consumables Market Growth Analysis

酷时尚的MG6280/MG3180 黑色,能满

“Low Price ≠ Low Cost” in Household Printers

Inkjet Printing: The Protagonist for the Next Decade Printing Industry

Market Potential Huge for Inventory Custom Printer

到 47dB( 分贝 ),而同等条件下爱普生

Fuji Xerox MPS Program

Inkjet Plug Failure Analysis & Solution

用 ;

Page 83: Recharge Asia Magazine July 2012

Inkjet Ink Quality Testing

ASK THE EXPERTS

85www.rechargeasia.com

Page 86: Recharge Asia Magazine July 2012

86 www.rechargeasia.com www.rechargeasia.com

Indonesia’s Election wills Drive Large Format Print Growth

Ikhwan
