Afterwards (the “Theology” part), we discuss the movie’s relevance to our life in Christ. Our November feature is the 1992 film Leap of Faith. It’s a nicely textured look at an evangelist’s traveling tent revival. Director Richard Pearce has a keen eye for detail and atmosphere. Stars Steve Martin, Debra Winger, Liam Neeson, Lukas Haas, Meat Loaf, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rated PG-13. Facilitated by Fr. Gregory. Come watch a great movie with your brothers and sisters in Christ! THE FUNERAL RECEPTION COMMITTEE is looking for individuals who would like to assist in hosting our church's funeral receptions. These occur in the Parish Hall after a funeral Mass sometimes during the day and others in the evening. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in community life in a meaningful way with a flexible time obligation. Our responsibilities include setting out food and drink (provided by another group of individuals) and to facilitate an environment for those families to feel cared and supported during their time of grief. If you would like more information or would like to be added to our list of helpers, please call Mary Balsam in the Parish Office or email:[email protected]. Thanks for considering this ministry! The Solemnity of All Saints is celebrated in the West on November 1. The traditional explanation for the choice of this date is that the celebration was moved from other dates either to counter or to draw on the pagan Celtic harvest festival of Samhain (SAH-win) observed around this time. In its celebration of all the saints, the Western Church adopted and adapted the Eastern Church’s practice of celebrating all the

martyrs on the Sunday after Pentecost. A similar feast was celebrated in Rome on May 13—during the Easter Season—to commemorate Pope Boniface IV’s rededication of the Pantheon as the Church of the Blessed Virgin and All Martyrs. It seems that a feast celebrating all the martyrs was also part of many liturgical calendars outside Rome, though the observance was kept on various dates. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III dedicated an oratory in St. Peter’s Basilica to contain the relics “of the holy apostles and of all the saints, martyrs, and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world.” This dedication was commemorated on November 1, and the May 13 feast in the Roman calendar was suppressed. Did the choice of November 1 have anything to do with Samhain? Maybe in some Celtic areas but probably not in Ireland: Records show that the early medieval Church in Ireland celebrated All Saints on April 20, and the feast was only moved to November 1 in imitation of the Roman calendar, when the November observance was made a day of obligation throughout the Frankish Empire in 835 “at the insistence of Pope Gregory IV and with the assent of all the bishops.”

ANGEL TREE HELP WANTED: Even though it still feels like Christmas is far away, we’re already gearing up for our annual Angel Tree. The Angel Tree is an opportunity to give Christmas gifts to families in need, through our own parish, Project LINK, and OAR. This year, we need to put together a team of people to help with a variety of tasks that help to make the project possible. There is a range of talents and time needed, including database entry, gift sorting, outreach to the partner agencies, preparation of ornaments, etc. If you’d like to participate, contact Sheila in the office to share your gifts and learn how you can help.

ALTERNATIVE GIVING FAIR: Sometimes we get caught up in giving the latest gadget for Christmas. It’s important to remember the true spirit of this holiday, and maybe take advantage of this opportunity to give in a different way. Incarnation is hosting our Alternative Giving Fair on November 21 and 22 after all the masses. There will be a chance to purchase “Alternative Giving” cards, and donate to various ministries. We will also have fair trade products for sale. If you are interested in helping, please contact Carol MacIntyre at [email protected]. GARDEN WORK DAY: The garden season is nearly over, but we still have work to do in Incarnation’s garden. We need to harvest sweet potatoes for the food ministry, as well as get the last of our summer crops. We’ll be having a Saturday work-day sometime in November, but if you’d like to help us get a jump-start on things, please contact Sheila in the office! ALSO: if you have leaves in your yard please consider shredding them and bagging them up for the garden ministry. This helps keep the soil healthy over the winter. GREEN TEAM’S EnvironMINUTE: God is the source of all of our energy, whether fossil fuels or renewable energy. According to LEAP (Local Energy Alliance Program) more than half of the energy that flows through the U.S. economy is ultimately wasted. Help preserve God’s creation: turn off lights, computers, T.V.s, etc. when not being used. FOOD MINISTRY: As the weather gets colder, many of us are remembering those in need of life’s basic necessities. If you want to help out with the tasks of the ministry, please contact Sheila in the Parish Office. If you’d rather donate material goods, we accept all food items in the basket in the Narthex, (along with paper bags and egg cartons). If you need inspiration, the item of the week is an easy thing to add to your shopping list. You can bring this item, or anything else you want to donate, to church Sunday. This week, our item is cans of corn and cans of tuna fish.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Incarnation is partnering with other Catholics in the area, as well as Habitat for Humanity, to create a house in honor of Pope Francis Our next build day will be November 7, so mark your calendar now to participate! No construction experience is necessary, and this is a great way to spend a Saturday living our faith and doing tangible work in the community. We also need people to photograph the event, and provide lunch. Check out the sign up sheets in the Narthex and put yourself on the list to help build safe and decent homes for families in need.

IMPACT ANNUAL ASSEMBLY IMPACT stands for “Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by

Congregations Together.”

PACEM (People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry) We will be hosting our PACEM homeless guests from Nov. 14 to Nov. 28. We want to turn the PAC into a comfortable, safe and caring place for our guests. PACEM is a great opportunity to minister to the men through Feeding, Serving and Spending time. We need daily lead volunteers, cooks, meal servers, overnight volunteers, setup and take down folks, sandwich makers, hard boiled egg cookers, orange juice and fresh fruit providers, and laundry volunteers. We need volunteers for evening activities and spending time with our

guests. There are lots of ways to pitch in and help. Sign up in the Narthex until Nov. 8. On a safety note , we have created guidelines on how to interact with the guests and there are copies on the signup table. Remember this is a low barrier emergency shelter of last resort. We do not know the backgrounds of these men so children should be well supervised by adults and a single adult should not be left in a room alone. Let’s have a wonderful hosting. God Bless you all. We are accepting coats, and warm clothing for emergencies if any of the men need them. Drop off at the Parish Office. P.A.C.E.M. TOILETRIES NEEDED: Incarnation will host the People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry (PACEM) Shelter for

Charlottesville homeless men starting November 14. The Outreach Ministry does NOT have enough of the following items for all of the Shelter guests that are expected: Disposable Razors, Men’s Deodorant, Dental Floss, Combs, Shaving Cream. Please help by donating one or all of the items above! Donations should be left in the collection basket

in the Narthex. Thank You! TRAINING & POTLUCK: Come on Mon., Nov. 9 at 6:30pm in the PAC to learn more about the work of PACEM. We will provide training for the Leads, Food Captains, Servers and all involved. We are also looking for any ideas to make this the best experience for these men. Please contact Tom Eckman 295-3015 or Sheila Herlihy 434.973.4381 x119 with any ideas.

IMPACT ANNUAL ASSEMBLY: RESULTS! Thanks to all those who attended the Annual Assembly last Monday night. Every year, we make a significant change in our community, and this year will be no different. After hearing stories from real people who are dealing with these problems, we voted on Monday to make that change within the realm of _____________. Please stay tuned for information through our research process, and talk to Sheila to learn more about IMPACT.
