Since its incorporation in 1959, Rosaryhill School has encountered many challenges. The school has nominated me to continue to lead the whole school in our response to future developmental needs that take into consideration the environment, education and the structure of our school; responses that incorporate appropriate ways to overcome the different challenges confronting the school in the years ahead.

Of course all of this can not be achieved without collaboration. My heartfelt thanks to many of the fathers who have stayed on this year and shouldered workloads and responsibilities in various sectors. Thanks too to the two principals who have collaborated and worked tirelessly with the Sponsoring Body to achieve big strides in the advancement in school.

One of the most important challenges is the Secondary Section changing to an IMC mode in compliance with the requirements of government. This new change will bring a new identity to the management committee - an incorporated body. It will be managed and run under a new management committee where different stakeholders, including the Sponsoring Body will have representatives. School operations will be localized through the support and contribution of various stakeholders i.e. teachers, alumni and parents, to achieve a better quality education.

Over the past two years, Primary and Kindergarten sections have seen considerable developments. Spanish Language classes were introduced into the curriculum and the school recruited many foreign teachers to teach students English and Spanish. In Primary we practice, "Putonghua to teach Chinese, which is our feature teaching method. Generally speaking, the total number of students has increased significantly. Kindergarten students who continue their studies into Primary at Rosaryhill School has contributed to this trend.

With a vision to succeed and having predicted the above developments, the Sponsoring Body decided to reassess the curriculums of different sections in pursuit of an integrated and unique educational initiative to construct a one through-train mode of educational system in order to enhance our competitiveness in Hong Kong.

I am confident that through engagement and the collaboration of everyone in the School, we will grow stronger and advance innovatively in the years to come, and in doing so, provide a premium quality educational service.

  • deparTMeNT oF reLigioN Lightening the Way, Opening New Paths was the theme that guided the department in organizing activities for students, teachers and staff. We started the activities with an Adaptation program for Secondary 1 students on 2 September 2013. The identity of Rosaryhill as a Dominican school was reinforced to the students as they are mostly new to the school. Catholic teachers and religious groups were all introduced.

Then on 11 September 2013 a religious ceremony was organized for Secondary 3. The message was that the students should be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. They were asked to be mindful about their own ability and strength. We encouraged students to be positive in life and work and not being pessimistic.

In the middle of September 2013 the department, through the Catholic students and teachers, promoted the New Youth Society and the Altar Service Group to recruit new members. The harvest was successful and more than one hundred students of S.1-S.5, old and new members, joined the New Youth Society and five groups were formed. Each of the five groups had weekly gatherings to share religious, moral, and biblical

knowledge and sharing beliefs and religious values. The teachers responsible for each of the groups were Ms. Amy Loo, Ms. Angela Chan, Ms. Jessica Leung and Mr. Joseph Yip and they worked together with director of the department and the pastoral assistant.

  • On 7 October the school celebrated the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Patroness of Rosaryhill School and Patroness of the Holy Rosary Province with a solemn concelebrated mass with the participation of all the teachers, students and staff. This day marked the opening ceremony of the celebration of Rosaryhill School 55th Anniversary. Father Secundino Vicente, the eldest Dominican priest serving in Rosaryhill, preached the homily and refreshed by sharing his feelings of the past celebrations of anniversaries beginning with 10 Anniversary till the present 55 Anniversary. The Theme for the 55th Anniversary whole year celebration is: Lightening the Way, Opening New Paths.

The department was busy paying attention to the religious and spiritual needs of students and organizing activities, gathering, celebrations and thanksgiving mass and ceremonies for the three sections of the school. The department organized the religious week at the end of March 2014 and we try to show our Christian solidarity with the plights of the poor by having a Famine Lunch for secondary students and teachers. The same solidarity was shown at Caritas Bazaar and the Christmas Charity drive.

We had the opportunity to gather for the Staff Recollection Day on 16 April 2014 in which Fr. Benedict Lam lead us in the reflection about Lightening the Way, Opening New Paths by sharing with us a few interesting stories to point us to our growth as persons and the qualities of all of us as persons. Quoting Pope Francis, he said that nothing is new because we have the basic message of Christianity, faith, love that is always new. We are grateful to God and also to all the students and teachers that took part joyfully in the activities and we like to thank the principals, teachers and students that helped us in our mission of evangelization. Gods blessings to you all!

  • CHriSTMaS MaSS aNd FaCuLTY parTY Once again the time had arrived for the long waiting day, the annual Christmas Party was held in School on the 19th December 2013. All teachers and staff gathered on this day to celebrate Christmas and to relax from the tight schedule that we had for the past few months. The party began with a thanksgiving mass to share the meaning of Christmas and it was led by Father Christopher who was appointed as the school Supervisor this year! After the mass, we all moved to the school hall for the next program. It began with the presentation of Long Service Awards and was quickly followed by a series of highly entertaining programs contributed by various Section of Rosaryhill School. The programs are fabulous. There were singing performances from teachers, brothers singing in the choir, and also a group of fathers and Spanish teachers performed a cheerful Spanish Christmas song that caught everyones attention. It was the highlight of the party! At last but not least, our secretary from the general office turned into a ballet dancer and performed a stunning dance which gave us a different image from her usual daily appearance at work. Everyone had a great time at the party and are looking forward to the new year of 2014.

We held a fun party in the school hall to celebrate Father Christophers birthday. All the teachers from different sections were invited to join this wonderful birthday party. Some kindergarten kids sang some lovely songs to Father and the party was full of joy! The most amazing and unforgettable moment came during the cake-cutting ceremony. It created a special, touching and harmonic atmosphere. Thanks Father for sharing your happiness with us not only on your birthday, but every day. We all love you!

  • This year we had two days of programmes for teachers development, held on 2nd and 5th May. On the first day, a talk was given by Dr. Yeung Wing Ho, Principal of Confucius Hall Secondary School. Based on his personal experience, Dr Hos talk on parent-teacher collaboration was vividly delivered. The second day of the programme was rather special as Fr. Vincent Sanchez invited some guests to the school, notably five monastics from the Asian Institute of Applied Buddhism. These monastics came to share their thoughts on the theme of mindfulness. All of our teachers had a good time doing some relaxing exercises on the playground, as well as having a discussion on the unique theme. Not only did the programmes enable all the teachers here at Rosaryhill Schools to learn something applicable to their job, but there was also an invaluable experience of sharing for all those who took part in the event.

2014 is a memorable year for Rosaryhill School as it marks its 55th foundation anniversary. Numerous academic, cultural and religious activities have highlighted the event. I myself, with these lines, want to join other family members, parents, alumni, teachers, students and staff as well as the Dominican Fathers in this joyous occasion. The 55th anniversary is a privileged opportunity for us to express our gratitude for the years past, to renew our passion for the present and to look at the years ahead with hope.

Rosaryhill School has a glorious history in Hong Kong in terms of educational work, achievements and excellence. No one can deny how important the School has been in the past, and continues being today, for thousands of Hong Kong citizens who have found in Rosaryhill School a safe and wholesome place to grow up and receive an excellent education imbued with Christian and Dominican values. This makes us proud of it.

This mission has not ended. On the contrary! In the minds of the Dominican Fathers, teachers and staff members of the school continue to shine with renewed intensity the noble desire of giving the best of themselves to the cause of education; the strong commitment to overcome the challenges and difficulties that they inevitably come across day by day, convinced that by remaining united, as a Family, is the most efficient way to carry out their wonderful ministry of educating young boys and girls. May their dreams come true!

My most sincere congratulations to Rosaryhill School on its 55th Anniversary, and my unconditional support for the continued work to come that will ensure a bright future for the School.

More than 300 students and alumni participated in dancing, choral singing, choral speaking, solo singing, drama and sharing. The gala presented the story of our founder, St. Dominic and his important message: our Heavenly Father gave us opportunities to learn, experience and grow. He also taught us we should also care more about the people we meet on the journey of life and our communities. Do this and his love and blessings will be with us when we share our love with others.

  • CeLeBraTioN diNNerThe Celebration Dinner, which was one of the highlights of the 55th Anniversary celebration of our school, was held on 22nd March 2014 at the Metropol Restaurant in Admiralty. 69 tables seated over 800 participants, mainly alumni and teachers of both past and present. There were also parents, administrative staff members, drivers, workmen and several invited guests. We also had the pleasure of having Mr. Ka-Him Ng and Miss Yvonne Law as our MCs. Both are past students and famous TV journalists. The programme started with the singing of the school song followed by speeches from our Supervisor, Fr. Christopher Chor, and Mr. Robert Kwan, the Chairman of the Organising Committee. The dinner began with a toast made by the members of the School Management Committee and a video about the past and present of our school was also shown. In the middle of the dinner there was a ceremony for the retirement of Fr. Secudino Vicente, the former Principal of Business Studies Section and the Supervisor of our school in 1971-1975. The Rosarian Singers also sang the song Rainbow Connection to Fr. Secudino to celebrate his retirement from the school management team. The retirement of Ms. Caroline Poon, who has been working in the school in various positions for over 40 years, was also announced.

Another highlight was the sharing session on past memories by Mr. Robert Kwan and Miss Queenie Chu, an alumnus and a famous TV artist. Memorable events and locations of the school were recalled and retired teachers, like Miss Margaret Chang, Miss Cathy Lau, Mr. Joe Wong and Mr. Damen Chan etc. were also invited to talk on the stage. There was also warm sharing of love and romance from student couples on how they started their love affairs in the school or after graduation; and also from teacher couples including Mr. and Mrs. Chan Kin Bun.It is always memorable and enjoyable to see the reunion of long lost friends who have not been seen for decades. The gathering concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Edward Ng, Chairman of the Old Students Association, and the endless photo-taking that followed. • 55TH aNNiverSarY Book

When, in the last school year we started talking about the 55th Anniversary, the first issue we had to confront was what was going to be the objective of our celebration. It came to our attention how important it was once again to explore our identity and the the educational ideals of the Dominican Order that strengthen the pillars that are the foundation of our school: to delve into our Dominican past. A main theme was decided upon, Lightening the Way, Opening new Paths. The theme prompts us to look more closely at the path St. Dominic de Guzman constructed for us; where we can find enlightenment able to fortify the future of our school and thus provide a sounder education for our students. We know that St. Dominic based his teachings and founded his order as a response to the risks and the needs that the preaching of the Gospel presented at the time. The main target of his new found order was to preach and spread the word of Jesus. St. Dominic presented a new vision to the missionary work of the priests at that time. It had to be done by people who had an exemplary life reinforced by their sound knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and of the teachings of the Church. St. Dominic placed special importance on education and he requested that his friars received higher education and that the Dominican houses were attached to universities. When opening the first Dominican houses he chose cities where there were universities. As this booklet shows, famous scholars who are still renowned today were some of the first people to join the Order. In different parts of the world our Order has opened famous universities and outstanding schools. We are aware that educating the minds of youngsters, their growth and the development of a solid set of values, in particular Christian values able to construct strong persons and future careers, is very important. This book explores the different Dominican icons that communicate Dominican identity and ideals. We will present briefly the life of St. Dominic and the establishment of the Order, with a short history of our Order and of our Province; we will provide a list of famous names, of persons, members of the Dominican Order, who have been relevant in the history of the Church and of the world, with a short semblance about some of them; we will also provide different testimonies from present and past teachers and students about the school and how much the school life has influenced their own lives; and finally we will present some concluding remarks that reflect upon what the book provides us, taking into account much of what other people have to say. The accomplishment of this book gives credit to a small group of teachers who have extensively searched for the information we want to impart. I feel they have successfully met our guidelines and expectations and we are confident that the reading of these pages will inspire all of us to learn more about the identity and ideals of our Order through our school. Its also hoped that it will encourage all of us to look always in the direction St. Dominic indicated to us and continue to embrace and support Dominican life and our Dominican institutions.

  • RELIGIouS dEPARTmENT In order to allow students to explore more about Jesus love and to understand His teachings, different religious activities were held throughout the whole school year besides weekly Religious Knowledge lessons. The school year began with an Opening Mass, reminding students God would be with us and take care of us always. At Christmas time students prepared some beautiful angels with different targets written on them. They hoped their work and their efforts to be better children could be treated as birthday gifts for baby Jesus. During Religious Week or other special days, students participated in different competitions and functions where they had a lot of fun, including church visits and singing songs. We believe students satisfaction and happiness found in religious activities help them realize the peace and joy that God grants us.

  • ENGLISH dEPARTmENT

As always, our English Department began the year with the Hong Kong Speech Festival. This year, we had the honor to help prepare 40 students, and we are proud to say that many of our students obtained Merit. In October, we celebrated Halloween with a Recycled Fashion Show. Groups of students worked together to create costumes out of materials brought from home. It was amazing what some of our students created. During Open Day, the English Room took guests on a flight to the Amazon Rainforest and Antarctica. Students from Primary 4 to Primary 6 helped us create the atmosphere complete with a captain and tour guides for each visit.

    P6 Free Hugs

Primary 6 students chose to celebrate Easter in English with a selection of Minute-to-Win-It games. We were lucky to have such a dedicated group of students lead their younger school mates in the games. May was a great time to share the poetry students learned throughout the year, so we chose two weeks for the classes to stand on the stage and recite their poems after recess. To end our school year, English Day gave students an opportunity to get involved in the World Cup action. We had a variety of fun games to play with a football flair.

organized on the 55th Anniversary Open Day. The supermarket was a

wonderful place to teach students about math. There were opportunities to use the

routine actions of shopping for candies to reinforce concepts of buying and selling. On 23 June 2014, all of the Primary students took part in Mathematics Day. A maths trail was organised on that day. Students needed to

apply basic knowledge to solve the problems. They needed to make different shapes,

measuring objects, finish the word search, etc. They all enjoyed

    the maths trail.

  • ComPuTER dEPARTmENT In this day it is extremely important that everyone be familiar with basic knowledge of computers. It has become increasingly important for children to have computer fundamentals. We should look at computer literacy as the ability to apply computers and related technology to thinking critically to solve a problem and ultimately producing a product. That product may be a document, a presentation, picture or a movie.

Chinese painting was incorporated into the Visual Arts curriculum last year. This year, we continue with Chinese painting as well as adding oil painting, so that students creativity will be nurtured through different art mediums. Although for many students it was the first time to do oil painting, they were deeply intrigued by the subject and involved in such classroom activities. The school also encourages students to sign up for various design activities. For example, some students joined the Art of Light Exhibition organized by the Hong Kong Society for Education in Art. Some of these students have attained meritorious results. Moreover, the school has organized trips to the exhibitions for students to appreciate various artistic designs.

  • Same as last year, our school carried on a morning reading section from Monday to Thursday morning. During the reading section, students could choose books available from the classroom library or bring their own books. Students could also borrow books from the school library during recess. At the beginning of the school year, each student was given a record book to record the reading progress in order to stimulate student interest in reading. All of these activities helped to cultivate good reading habits, as well as enrich the knowledge of our students.

  • This year has been a very special year for Rosaryhill because of the 55th Anniversary of the foundation of our school. The Spanish students from kindergarten and primary participated in this celebration by singing a popular Spanish song in groups. This year has also been special for the Spanish section for several other reasons. This year, Rosaryhill participated in the Spanish Speech Festival for the first time. The Spanish Speech Festival has been celebrated in Hong Kong now for two years. This year we sent eight of our students to compete. The results were magnificent considering that we joined this competition for the first year. Meenakshi from P3B was the winner in her category. Also, Nicole from P6B and Enrico from P6A won second and third place in the Spanish native-speakers category. Finally, we appreciate the support of the Principal, Ms. Anne Wong and Father Francisco de las Heras for taking the big step of creating class P.1S (Primary One Spanish class). This is a class where the students have Spanish classes with a native Spanish speaker - Ms. Raquel Centeno - every day. Thanks to the success of this class the school will continue with this project. There will now be two Spanish classes, one for Primary 1 (P.1S) and one for Primary 2 (P.
