Last weekend the American credit rating was scaled down by Standard & Poors thus sparkling off a dive in the world share market. The gloomy market persisted over days as with the falling sentiment of all investors. The all high Australian dollar has plunged 10% in response; this has eased a bit on our worry over our local economy due to a high dollar but the global economical uncertainty ahead is no less dampening.

Many people would regard the main cause for a messy economy world-wide is due to the extravagant spending of most westernised countries resulting in huge national debts beyond the repaying capacities of those countries. The financial crisis happened three years ago was caused by those insatiable financial institutions in over-valuing their products which ultimately impacted on their investors. That problem was temporary covered up then through credit packages offered by various government institutions, whilst the fundamental of over-spending still remains unresolved and now surfaces again.

To many laymen, economical model and theory may be beyond their comprehension; but we can still make our perspective correct in responding to recession, unemployment and disorder, we can appreciate that hope is still around us if we could lower our materialistic demand and enhance our output.

Few years ago Richard Foster wrote a book named Freedom of Simplicity , he points out Christians should

not believe in an endless materialistic world and our value of life should not be measured by our worldly possessions. He thinks modesty of life is a means to honour God s creation and to set us in real freedom. The concept of modesty has not been popular for the past 30 years as people regard extravagance as success; but I believe over the difficult times ahead modesty of life could be our way out.
