INTRODUCTION:- The following abbreviations are used in thecomments that follow. 1- Narayana Hridayam - NH. (2) Laxmi Hridayam -LH (3)Vishnu Sahasranama with the commentary of Shri Shankaracharya - VS. (4)Bhagavad Gita - BG. (5) Shrimad Bhagavatham - BH (6) LalithaSahasranamam- LS. (7) Vivekachudamani of Shri Shankaracharya - VC. (8) Katha Upanishad- KU. (9) Mundaka Upanishad - MULH:- Laxmi Hridayam stotram is unique in that it is coupled with anotherstotram Narayana Hridayam to form a pair. They are found in theAtharva Rahasyam. They were given out by sage Bhargava.The final part of NH says that NH is to be recited first,to be followed by the recital of Laxmi Hridayam and again the recital oftheNH. This is not to be recited separately as a single piece.This is to stress the fact that Lord Narayana and Laxmi are indeed onethough spoken of as two different deities.NH and LH belong to the category of stotramोऽम .्The appellation stotram, stuti and stavam all describe ahymn only.वः ोऽं निुतः िुतः । says Amara, the Sanskritlexicon. They all narrate the qualities of a deity. गणुसीत नम ्is stotram, says Shri Shankaracharya in his commentary to VishnuSahasranama.NARAYANA HRIDAYAM AND LAXMI HRIDAYAM:- Narayana

Hridayam (NH) andLaxmi Hridayam (LH) form a pair of very valuable and sacred hymns. NH isthe

shorter one. It consists of only 37 verses. LH is longer and consists of 108verses. The word (दयम)् hridayam is popularly taken to mean theheart. The word also is used to mean secret, true or divine knowledge.Being hymns found in the Veda the Narayana Hridayam and Laxmi HridayamStotras are highly efficacious. They also contain recondite vedantic truthswhich may be found in the upanishads, puranas, Bhagavad Gita etc. Thesetruths are also to be seen in other stotras and in the hymns of lateracharyas. लीदयके ोऽे सव मत ्ू कािशतम ।् (NH -33). So, to describe them as hridayam is very apt. They are, therefore,very precious. For these reasons they are considered very sacred andtherefore secret - not to be easily given out. गोमतेदा कुया त ्न सव ऽ ूकाशयते।् says Narayana Hridayam (34) in its laterpart. Because of this restriction these stotras were handed down from aworthy guru to deserving disciples only. They were not freely availablelike Vishnu Sahasranamam.

Only some noteworthy features of this LH stotram could be mentionedin this brief introduction. The reader is requested to read the commentsgiven to the NH (that is available in this site under the headimg VISHNU).to get a complete picture of the two stotras that are linked together.

LH:- The first fifteen verses praise Laxmi Devi and offersalutations to Her. Since She is the mother of all creation,She can bless the devotee with all material wealth. But,She is inseparable from the Lord. This is said by sayingthat one is within the other.

नारायण दये भवती यथाऽऽ,े नारायणोऽिप तव मले यथाे ।नारायणमिप िन िवभू तथवै, तौ िततां ममािप दयाितौ ौीः ॥She is with the Lord at all places.

यथा वकुैठनगरे यथा व ै ीरसागरे ।तथा मवन े ित िरं िवनुा सह ॥

योिगनां दय े िनं यथा ितिस िवनुा ।तथा मवन े ित िरं ौीिवनुा सह ॥She is also the Self seated in the heart of all beings She is statedto be सवभतूारा in the LH. So is not different fromthe Lord who also says He is the Self seated in the heart of all beings.अहमाा गडुाकेश सवभतूाशयितः । BG(10-20).Thus, it is evident that She is identical with Narayana and can conferall that one may seek including liberation or mokSha. This is said inthe LH as ग ै नमोऽु वरसित दायकाय।ैFurther, it is to be noted that if one’s accumulatedkarmas stand in the way of one progressing towards liberation

in the form of the ᳚writing on the head᳚ (ललाट िलिखता रखेा) byof the creator Brahma, She, being the creator of every thing with nameand form including Brahma, can alter the same and help in his progress.

तदिक फलुटं कमलवािसिन ौीिरमांसमप य समिुिकां सकलभायससंिूचकाम ॥् (LH)

Here, the word ᳚creator᳚ does not mean She has created something out ofnothing, but only means She has evolved as everything. She has becomeBrahma the creator and Vishnu the protector also.सिृकऽ ॄपा गोी गोिविपणी। LS(114)Shri Vedanta Desika uses this idea in his Shri Hayagriva Stotram (verse 20).

िवमधू िलिपबमाणां सरुेचडूापदलािलतानाम ।्दिराजीवरजःकणानां भयूान ्ू सदो मिय नाथ भयूात ॥्The great acharya prays to the Lord that the pollen dust of His LotusFeet should fall on his head so as to remove the letters written byBrahma at his birth. He indicates that even gods like Indra salute Hisfeet with the same idea; that is; the dust of Lord’s feet should fall

on their heads and alter their fate as decreed by the scribbling ofBrahma on their head. Lord Krishna gives the assurance to Arjunain BG(18-52) that with his mind firmly fixed on Him he will crossover all difficulties on his spiritual path.मिः सवगा िण मसादािरिस ।The LH repeatedly asks for the fulfilment of thefirst two of the four goals (viz.) wealth and enjoyment of pleasures oflife got from wealth. But wealth in the hands of one without discretioncan have disastrous consequences. It can lead one away from the spiritualpath and to his downfall. Our scriptures warn one of this and say thatone who hoards wealth without sharing with the needy is indeed a thiefand deserves punishment. BG(VII-XIV-89)यावद ् िॅयते जठरं तावत ्ं िह दिेहनाम ।्अिधकं योऽिभमते स नेो दडमहित ॥Keeping this injunction in mind, the devotee asks for wisdom beforeseeking wealth and also asks Her to bless the heart with compassion toenable him to share the wealth liberally with others.

िवानविृं दय े कु ौीः सौभायविृं दय े कु ौीः ।दयासवुिृं कुतां मिय ौीः सवुण विृं कु मे करे ौीः ॥The end portion contains some significant requests. We saw that theLH repeatedly asks for good things of life, wisdom etc. But as statedearlier whatever is got by our own efforts or karma will be finite and sowill not last for long. Our life will continue to have fluctuations. Thebetter and wiser alternative is to make the Lord stay in our hearts forever by having steadfast devotion to Him . Then all auspicious thingswill be with us for ever. So, the LH asks for ौीशािभिः ।or devotion to the feet of the Lord first.

ौीशािभिं हिरदादां ूसमाथ ढकैिनाम ।्गरुोः िृतं िनम लबोधबिुं ूदिेह मातः परमं पदं ौीः ॥The saint Kulasekhara also asked - not for the three purushartas -

dharma, artha and kama. He says that let events, good or bad,happen according to karmas he had done. He prays to the Lord to granthim unwavering devotion to His lotus like feet in this and in futurebirths. (Mukundamala).नाा धम न वसिुनचये नवै कामोपभोग ेयं भवत ु भगवन प्वू कमा नुपम ।्

एता मम बमतं जजारऽेिपादाोहयगुगता िनला भिरु॥

The Vishnu Purana says the same truth by stating that those who may be

bereft of worldly possesions and so termed ᳚poor᳚ in the worldly senseare really rich if their hearts have the wealth of love for Shri Hari.The reason is that Shri Hari also stays in their hearts being tied withcords of love.

सकलभवुनमे िनध नाऽेिप धािनवसित िद यषेां ौीहरभे िरकेा ।

हिररिप िनजलोकं सव था तं िवहायूिवशित िद तषेां भिसऽूोपनः ॥

So, the prayer is to grant before other things, devotion to the feetof the Lord.Another prayer is to being a servant to the servants ofHari. Our scriptures repeatedly stress the importance of service tothe devotees of the Lord.The sage Naradha says in his Bhakti Sutra (No: 39-42) that the companyof the devotees of the Lord is difficult to obtain. It never fails to producebeneficial results. It is got by the grace of God only. Thers is nodifference between the Lord and His devotees. So, one should striveto get it.

महु लभोऽगोऽमोघ ।लतऽेिप तृपयवै । तिंजन े भदेाभावात ।्

तदवे साता,ं तदवे साताम ॥्In Shrimad Bhagavatam we have the story of Lord’sincarnation as Rishaba Deva. Before renouncing His kingdom and takingto the forests, He talks to His sons about the value of human lifeand how they should work for liberation. Though Rishaba Deva saysHe is an incarnation Himself, He advises His sons, not to surrenderto Him, but to seek the company of devotees and serve them saying itis the doorway to liberation. महवेां ारमाः िवमेुः ।Coming from the mouth of the Lord, as an incarnation, it shows theimmense value of service to the devotees of the Lord. The company ofthe devotees removes the impurities in the mind, brings calmness tothe mind. More importantly it instils faith in the statements of thescriptures and acharyas known as shraddha. ौा।. Only one whois keenly interested, has controlled his senses and has shraddha cangain knowledge, says Krishna. BG(4-39). ौावान ल्भते ान ंतरः सयंतिेयः । One gets the qualifications required foracquiring vedantic knowledge.Shri Shankaracharya glorifies the association of the devotees in hisSivanandhalahari by saying it as great as the company of the Lord Himself.सामीं िशवभि-धयु -जनता-सा साषण।ेOnce the mind is clear of impurities like greed, anger etc., and alsoimbibed noble qualities from the association of the devotees,God sends him a suitable guru. The vedatic wisdom has necessarily tobe obtained from the guru’s mouth.तिानाथ स गुमवेािभगते स्िमािणः ौोिऽयंॄिनम ।्MU(1-2-12). Krishna also advised Arjuna to servemen of wisdom and seek knowledge. BG(4-34).तिि ूिणपातने पिरूने सवेया ।उपदेि ते ान ं ािननदिशनः ॥The guru’s teachings remove the doubts that may be cloudingthe student’s mind and his intellect becomes clear, said here as

िनम लबोधबिुः । The upanishad says that a person endowedwith discriminating intellect, has controlled his mind and has gotconcentration, reaches the end of the very very long road, that isknown as samsara and reaches the supreme goal and becomes free fromall bondages. This is known as liberation and said herein as परमंपदम ।् highest abode of Vishnu or Brahman.िवानसारिथय ु मनः ूमहवारः ।सोऽनः पारमाोित तिोः परमं पदम ॥् KU(1-3-9)

The word परमं पदम ।् mentioned here is a well known name ofthe Lord VS(732). पदमनुमम ए्वम प्ते गते ममुुिुभिरितपदम ।् याृं नाि तदनुमम ।् It is the higest placeor goal that is attained by the seekers of liberation. ᳚Attaining᳚ doesnot imply going to some far of place like Vaikunta or Kailasa. Liberationmeans understanding ones own true divine nature and abiding in it. Thisis said here as िवोः परमं पदम ।् or the highest place ofall-pervading Brahman, of the supreme Self.CONCLUSION. The end portion says the benefits one may get by recitingthe LH. It assures that the Goddess Laxmi will fulfil the desires of Her devoteeand look after him like Her son. There is a story in the Mahabharata toillustrate this. Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, planned to get hissister Subhadra married to Duryodhana. In the mean time Arjuna happened tolook at her and was captivated by her bewitching beauty. His mind was set onmarrying her and wanted to talk about his wish to his friend Krishna. Buthe was worried at the same time that, if Krishna agreed to help him andtook steps, it may create a rift between the brothers Krishna and Balarama.He was at his wit’s end and wanted a way out the predicament. He prayedto sage Vyasa who promptly appeared before him. He put his problem beforethesage and requested his help. The sage taught him LH and asked him torecite the stotram in the prescence of a lamp lighted with ghee and

assured him that he will succeed in his endeavour. Arjuna followed thesage’s advice, recited the LH with faith and married Subhadra in the end.

It will be evident from what is said here that both the NH and LH are valuablehymns and like veritable mines of precious gems. An interested reader will beable to find more gems if he digs deep into them. The greater benefit willbe, that by reciting them regularly, one will develop devotion to DivineCouple, Lord Narayana and Goddess Laksmi, and reap their abundant grace.Now follows the stotram LAXMI HRIDAYAM.

॥ ॐ तत ॥्अ ौी आािद ौीमहाली-दय-ोऽ-महाम भाग व ऋिषः(िशरसी),अनुबुािद नानाछािंस (मखु)े,आािद-ौीमहाली सिहत नारायणो दवेता (दय)े॥

। ॐ बीज,ं ॑ शिः, ऐ ंकीलकम ।्आािद-ौीमहाली-ूसादिसथ जप े िविनयोगः ॥ओम ॥् “आािद-ौीमहाली दवेतय ै नमः” दय,े “ौ बीजाय ै नमः” गु,े“॑ शै नमः” पादयोः, “ऐ ं बलाय ै नमः” मधूा िद-पाद-पय ं िवसते ॥्ओम ौ् ॑ ऐ ं करतल-करपा योः, ौ अुां नमः,॑ तज नीां नमः, ऐ ं ममाां नमः, ौ अनािमकाां नमः,॑ किनिकाां नमः, ऐ ंकरतल करपृाां नमः ॥ॐ दयाय नमः, ॑ िशरस ेाहा, ऐ ं िशखाय ै वौषट,्ौ कवचाय म ्, ॑ नऽेाां वौषट,् भभू ुववुर इित िदबः ॥

॥ अथ ानम ॥्हयने कमले धारय लीलया ॥हार-नपूरु-सयंुां महाल िविचयते ॥्कौशये-पीतवसनां अरिवनऽेाम ्पयाभय-वरोत-पहाम ।्

उताक -सशां परमा-संांायते ि्वधीशनत-पादयगुां जिनऽीम ॥्

बीजापरंू कनक-कलशं हमेपं दधानाम ्आां शिं सकलजनन िव-ुवामासंाम ॥् १॥

ौीमौभायजनन ौिम ल सनातनीम ।्सव काम-फलावाि-साधनकै-सखुावहाम ॥् २॥रािम िनं दवेिेश या ूिेरतमानसः ।दाां िशरसा धृा भजािम परमेरीम ॥् ३॥सम-सखुदां महािौयंसम-काणकर महािौयम ।्

सम-सौभायकर महािौयंभजाहं ानकर महािौयम ॥् ४॥

िवानसखुदां महािौयंिविचऽ-वािूतकर मनोहराम ।्

अन-सौभाय-सखुूदाियननमाहं भिूतकर हिरिूयाम ॥् ५॥

सम-भतूारसिंता ंसम-भेँिर िवप े ।

ताि यितिरवुादपं ूणमाहं ौीः ॥ ६॥

िव-ुिुतपरां ल णवण -िुत-िूयाम ।्वरदाभयदां दवे वे ां कमलेणे ॥ ८॥अ ूसीद कणा-पिरपणू -ामां ृपाििवणगहेिममं कु ।आलोकय ूणत-त-शोकहिाद-पयगुलं ूणमाहं ौीः ॥ ९॥शाैनमोऽुशरणागत-रणाय ैकाै नमोऽुकमनीय-गणुाौयाय ै ।

ाैनमोऽु िरतय-कारणाय ैधा ै नमोऽु धन-धा-समिृदाय ै॥ १०॥

शैनमोऽुशिशशखेर-सिंताय ैर ै नमोऽु रजनीकर-सोदराय ै ।

भ ै नमोऽु भवसागर-तारकाय ैम ै नमोऽु मधसुदून-वभाय ै॥ ११॥

लैनमोऽुशभु-लण-लिताय ैिस ै नमोऽु सरु-िस-सपुिूजताय ै ।
