Uncapping Bottled waterMost people assume that bottled water

is the healthiest option out there and that it is far safer than tap water. Americans spend about $4 billion a year on bottled water, assuming that it is much healthier than tap water. Well, it’s not that simple. The bottled water industry is less regulated then the tap water industry. They are also not required to disclose the results of the tests conducted on their water supplies. And shockingly, close to half of all bottled water actually comes from tap water, which is simply filtered by the company – and can be recognized by the code word purified water.

This does not mean that tap water is necessarily better, as we have already discussed the many downsides of tap water. We just want to clarify the misconception that bottled water is free of chemicals that may pose health hazards.

The Environmental Working Group tested 10 best-selling brands of bottled water for 170 contaminants and found different mixtures of 38 contaminants, including bacteria, fertilizer, and industrial chemicals at levels similar to those allowed in tap water.Two of the samples, bought in San Francisco, contained the chemical compound trihalometrane in levels that exceeded the amount allowed in California.

Though bottled water doesn’t have some of the downsides of tap water like fluoride and chlorine and the heavy metals that may leach into the tap water through pipes, it may bring along its own set of

problems. The plastic bottles in which the water is stored may leach chemical compounds into the water. This is all the more so of concern if the water has been in the bottle for a prolonged period of time or has been exposed to heat.

So the jury is still out as to whether bottled water is healthier than tap water. In our next installment we will explore the reasons why filtering tap water may be our best option.

5 tips for a stress free school morningThere's nothing worse than beginning the day with complete chaos. A child who can't find their sock, another child who hasn't got a clean shirt, and you who ends up at home with frazzled nerves, or going to work 20 minutes late with sheitel askew, not even a sip of coffee to wake you up.

It's important to get yourself and your children into a morning routine to ensure your house is a stress-free environment and you all arrive at school and work on time. We've come up with 5 tips that might make your mornings a little easier.

1. Plan the night before - Planning what clothes you're going to wear in the morning might save you five minutes of staring blankly into your wardrobe, hoping something will jump out of your closet and politely suggest you wear it. Do the same for the kids and lay out their clothes ready for them to slip on. Planning lunchboxes the night before can also be helpful and save you time wrestling in the crisp cupboard for the various items of your child’s lunch.

2. Know the school routine - Make sure you know what days your children have gym, show and tell day etc. By getting into a routine of knowing this you can plan the night before which clothes need to be ready for the morning. If your child has homework on a certain day, make sure it's done the night before so they're not spending time scribbling instead of eating breakfast.

3. Take care of yourself - Particularly this time of year, there's absolutely nothing worse than having to drag yourself out of bed in the morning. But doing so 10 minutes before the children will give you time to get up, clear your head and get a head start on getting ready for the day. Sometimes your younger children might need help getting dressed or need an extra push getting out of bed so if you're up and half ready, you won't be so stressed about spending that little bit of time helping them.

4. Have a routine - If you have older children, (i.e. teenagers) and all of a sudden your daughter takes 20 minutes in the morning blow drying her hair in the bathroom, arrange some sort of morning routine. Have 1 child in the bathroom while the other is getting dressed to avoid those typical teenage arguments. They might leave at different times, so help them formulate a plan where they both get ready and leave on time.

5. Relax – Much more easily said than done but if you start the day by telling your kids 10 times they need to get dressed, chances are they won't do it. Relax and spend time with them in the morning helping them get ready calmly and if you've prepared the night before, then pack their bag and off they go. After getting into a steady routine, children will grow up and learn to do it on their own!
